OK I know you all deserve an explanation.
The first thing that matters the most -to me- I really, honestly, truthfully etc -didn't know how much those positive or negative rep's actually matter.
I should have just said that I don't like (hate) gay movies . So those neg reps definitely doesn't refer to the members but to the gay movies. I can't hate ppl for watching gay movies I only can discuss their choices for watching the same.
Someone said, probably I didn't even watch many of them. I can say I watched the big ones like Brockeback Mountain,Milk.... and I didn't like those.
If Sean Penn plays a gay person,it doesn't mean I hate Sean Penn.

To be honest it comes across as pretty homophobic to say you hate gay movies.
And while you don't have to like these movies or even watch them, do you honestly think that other people shouldn't discuss them?

Homophobia's breeding ground is fear and ignorance...

Well, I appreciate Lug clarifying things publicly, at least, but as I stated here and explained privately, this obviously isn't an appropriate use of the system and it will be fixed. If someone has a problem with such films, well, obviously just handing out scads of negative rep isn't the way to express that. And as has already been stated by others, not liking the films doesn't really equate to not wanting people to discuss them, either.
Anyway, I think we're all on the same page now.

ok ok I got your point for the neg reps, I've said it already. Nor I was angry while hitting the thumbs up, actually it was funny-childish way as you would say.
The main reason for me doing it, it was exactly to avoid these kinda discussions. Now you are calling me homophobic, while I didn't say anything on that subject. My 'rampage' of thumbs-down was simply because I don't like gay movies. I've mentioned only 2 of them for an example, but actually I watched couple of them.
Now ,fear? -from whom,from what?
ignorance? of what actually?? where is wisdom in gay world?
P.S.(I think Yoda got it now) I really didn't have any intention to offend anyone here, just didn't know how to rate whole thread at once.

Anyway, I'd be glad as I already said to Yoda if he finds the way to remove all my neg reps, because I know it wasn't an appropriate approach.
At least you have my view on this subject, so as far as I'm concerned- no hard feelings..

One might ask where the wisdom was in the majority of this post... but just so you know, your little phrase I highlighted is why you earned a negative rep point from me... which is something I very rarely ever give on here...
As for your statement you didn't really intend to offend anyone... time will tell...

Buggery buggery....don't do it in the shrubbery!
Anyway, to get this thread back on track... I mentioned this film before in my post about the 24th BFI London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival, now some images and more info.
The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister. It seems, from what I can work out that this is a bbc film to be shown on BBC2 sometime, although it is premiering at a West End cinema as part of the festival.
From the BFI website:
A pioneering woman in so many ways, Anne Lister was also a lesbian, her journal the place where she poured out her emotions and the passions she felt for the women in her life. Although careful to keep her feelings secret in her journal, the pressures of an aristocratic society didn't stop her from defying convention and pursuing the woman of her dreams, the beautiful Mariana (Anna Madeley, Affinity). The agonies and ecstasies of Anne's life are vividly drawn in this passionate period drama. Unable to be with the woman she loves, Anne looks to the local church congregation for new friendships and is joined by Tib, her friend and one time lover, played by the brilliant Susan Lynch (Elizabeth: The Golden Age). When word comes that Mariana is visiting, Anne cannot resist temptation, and their illicit affair becomes increasingly endangered with the threat of discovery. Shot beautifully on location with a superb supporting cast, Anne Lister is an honest depiction of the secret history of our lesbian past. Entertaining and bold this places lesbian sexuality in the heart of Bronte country, where it had always existed unnoticed - until now

Does anyone know of any definitive/good top 50/top 100 lists of lgbtq films? I found one on the afterelton website but it was a poll and seemed mainly to include recent US fluff with very little older or foreign movies. And no lesbian films at all. Any ideas? Or should we attempt to compile our own MoFo version, like some people have for horror films?
Finally, can someone who has the power to do these things please change the title of this thread so it can be found by searching? At the moment it says 'fims' rather than 'films'...

I loved The Crying Game. It had a real gentle tone to the whole movie.

I'm not sure 'gentle' is the word I'd use about a terrorist thriller... but it is a great film
Hilary Swank in "Boys Don't Cry" -- one of the great all-time performances in my mind.
Joey Lauren Adams should have gotten an Oscar nomination for her role in Chasing Amy IMHO.
In Four Weddings and a Funeral, the gay couple were really the only well adjusted characters. John Hannah's speech at his partner's funeral was very touching and very well acted.
It's not one of my favorite movies by any stretch, but in browsing through the thread I don't see Kiss of the Spiderwoman mentioned anywhere.
The Wedding Banquet -- I particular liked this one for the way Ang Lee avoided a completely neat, happy Hollywood ending, though it was still a trifle sentimental.

It's two movies. The first half or so is the thriller. The second is the gentle story of understanding and a type of love. Probably says something about each of us, which we remember most. I'd forgotten about the brutality in the first part of the movie until you mentioned it.

Anyhow, doing a list would be interesting, but I don't think I could come up with 50 (and agreed on the afterelton list, any list that has Shelter on it is pretty ridiculous).
I'll come up with something when I have more time, but I'd be interested to see others' in the meanwhile.....
