The Personal Recommendation Hall of Fame II

https://www.pulitzer.org/cms/sites/d...bit_add_p5.jpg

Welcome to the 2nd edition of the Personal Recommendation Hall of Fame. In case you are new or have been living under a f**king rock, below are the rules.

This will be a different kind of specialty Hall of Fame, not one in which a movie will win, but rather a member.

Instead of the normal practice of nominating one movie for everyone to watch, you will nominate a different movie for every member. You will choose what your fellow members will be watching by picking one that they haven't crossed off from any of their MoFo lists. So make sure that you're lists are up to date!

https://www.oscars.org/sites/oscars/...?itok=jlHm-_x9

There are some positives unique to this Hall of Fame. The biggest is probably that you'll be watching every nomination for the first time, no more rewatching a movie you recently saw or didn't like before. Also, with being on a MoFo list, you will be watching movies that have some acclaim either here or somewhere else. This could be a nice head start on preparation for the next countdown. And it's always nice to cross a few movies off our lists. If someone can't get their hands on a movie they're supposed to watch, whoever nominated it can simply choose another one. There's no concern over other members having already watched it.

There's 2 parts to start this. First you have to join. You have until Saturday morning the 24th to do just that. Once Sunday morning the 25th comes, we will know who the members are, and then everyone can send their personal recommendation nominations to me. Once I have them from everyone, I will post them and come up with a due date. If you pick a movie for someone that has already been picked for them, you will simply be asked to pick another. You can pick the same movie for multiple members as long as they all haven't crossed it off their lists.

https://cdn.vox-cdn.com/thumbor/Enun...cannes2019.jpg

Fresh meat is welcome, but if you're a member who has never completed a Hall of Fame before, you will have to prove yourself first. You will have to watch 5 movies that have been chosen for you before I will post your nominations. This is just to ensure that you don't disappear after the rest of us watch your sorry ass picks.

Voting will be just like any other Hall of Fame. I'm going to put the runtime limit at 3 hours. For this Hall of Fame, I will waive that limit for people nominating for me. Everyone else has that option as well. Previous winners can be nominated in this Hall of Fame.

Hopefully everyone finishes, but if you watch a movie chosen by someone who drops out, it'll at least probably be a movie that was worth watching.

I'll join one of these when someone figures a manageable way to do this without being forced to make picks from MoFo lists. I understand that it keeps things simple, but for me, it's just too limiting and boring.

That’s what the HOF is there for, as it fulfills the criteria you prefer, but I totally understand your reasons.

Miss Vicky 10-16-20 12:48 AM

Okay, I'll join.

However, please, please, PLEASE take my advice about what to avoid when choosing nominations for me. I know that I'm picky AF and am very hard to please and that your selections are limited, but please make an effort to choose something I might actually enjoy.

Things to keep in mind:

-I DO NOT waive the run time limit. I cannot stress this enough. Please check the runtimes of possible nominations before settling on one for me.

-Please be hyper aware of the content of the films you are choosing. Anything containing actual animal cruelty (this includes cruelty to invertebrates and fish) or the sexualizing/nudity of actual child actors will get an automatic last place on my ballot. Films featuring simulated animal cruelty or the sexualizing of adults who are playing minors are acceptable. A few examples of films to avoid are Cannibal Holocaust, The Wild Bunch, Andrei Rublev, Apocalypse Now, and Oldboy, as they all contain actual animal cruelty.

-As many of you already know, there are a number of directors that I generally dislike. While choosing a film from one of them isn't an automatic dealbreaker, please be aware that the chances of your nomination ranking highly on my ballot will be pretty damn low if you disregard this bit of advice. Such directors include Stanley Kubrick, Wes Anderson, Paul Thomas Anderson, David Lynch, and Darren Arronofsky. There may be more that I'm not thinking of as well.

-There are also certain genres that I don't generally like. Musicals are typically a big no-no. Documentaries generally bore me as do most arthouse films. Comedies - movies that really try to be funny - often fall flat with me. And I'm not big on heavy Horror (though I do enjoy several horror comedies), Science Fiction, or Fantasy, though aside from musicals, none of these are necessarily dealbreakers. War movies are best avoided, unless it's centered around the American Civil War or an ancient battle. Westerns are also very hit or miss and keep in mind that many of them, especially the older ones, employed some pretty barbaric methods to get horses and other animals to do what the director wanted.

-I generally am not a fan of movies that feature female protagonists or that have predominantly female casts, though this is also not a dealbreaker.

-Things I like in movies: Violence. Sex - but keep in mind that I'm a woman and that my idea of what is sexy might not align with yours especially if you are a heterosexual male. If the women are hot and the men are ugly, I'm not going to be impressed. I want some male eye candy. I also tend to gravitate towards sad films. If it succeeds in making me cry, I will probably love it.

Re: The Personal Recommendation Hall of Fame II

I'll decide closer to the deadline. I'm inclined to do this but I still have to watch a few more films from the General HoF till I see if I can handle this.

And I already chose the film for Miss Vicky so, that's half of the work xD

It's cool but I don't get it, especially with you since there's a couple of thousand films to choose from. If you join a specialty HoF, it's much more limited with the amount of films that people are even aware of, and I think the most boring thing is watching something you just watched or something you already didn't like. Maybe you're thinking it would be great if we could just pick any movie you haven't seen? At least this selection has had some type of consensus as opposed to one member's opinion, and we all have our own personal watchlists already for movies that are out in left field. There were a whole lot of new personal favorites discovered the last time around, and plus the selection process is way more fun.

Re: The Personal Recommendation Hall of Fame II

I for one love the structure of the Personal Rec. I can easily look through a member's list and find something I know they haven't seen. Sometimes I even find a film they might like:) Some folks are harder to choose for, than others. Me, I'd think I'd be easy to please with a movie rec.

I do love the idea of this HoF, but I don't think I'm a good match for it. I'm terrible at picking out films for other people, and have a hard enough time deciding on just a single nomination, so I can't imagine how difficult finding a film for each person would be.

I'll take another stab at updating my lists just in case I decide to join anyway. But given how few musicals and documentaries I'll have ticked off once I finish going through them, I'm also afraid that everyone will nominate one of those for me, and this will be an incredibly long and painful HoF that'll be very tempting to just outright quit.

Same.
I am also pretty easy to pick for, as I don’t allow myself to be pigeonholed nor restrictive and can be fairly critical of any film regardless of genre, actor, and or director. I’ll give any a chance.*

Yeah and you won't see me participate anymore now..

There are many actors I don't care to see their films...

Bradley Cooper - can't stand to look at his face
Ben Stiller isn't funny
Will Farrell isn't funny
Oliver Jackson-Cohen now is behind James Spader in actors I DONT LIKE.

There are many more.

maybe this is why I watch foreign films.

Just let us all know: NO MUSICALS for Cosmic. Of course, one or two of us may do it JUST to mess with ya :drevil:
I do like what @Miss Vicky did and post a list of what you DON'T want to see and maybe a few points in the right direction for possible genres and/or types of films.
Not that I'll pick the RIGHT film for Vicky, (see nearly everything I've ever nominated lol) it is a great idea to drop some hints to help others pick and choose for ya.

I'm in. Of course.
I will keep the time limit since things get hectic this time of the year and the shorter films will work far better for me.
Not too many restrictions since I got a lot of great surprises in the first one but I will say that for what DOES work:
There are some Westerns I missed out on during the recent Countdown so if someone has trouble picking, that may be a good spot to grab from.
So is War related films and Historical/Time Period films works great as well.
I do enjoy Musicals.
Animation.
Detective, Mystery, Gangster films are solid choices and if you find one that is not from the U.S, even better still.
In fact, Foreign films in general, except Middle Eastern ones. They never seem to work for me. Not sure why. My favorites (not necessarily in this order) France, England along with Scottish and Irish, Norwegian, Russian, Asian films especially South Korea, and Australian films. Italian films are hit and miss but not a deal-breaker.
Also, there are a couple of Must See! films that have not been checked off so if you come across one that you think I really need to see -- give it a shot.

For what NOT to pick: NO Adam Sandler or Ben Stiller or any of their "friends" like Owen Wilson films, and pretty much most of the comedies in the past two decades. Can't stand them. I DO like comedies from the 80s all the way back to silent films.
No modern Horrors though I do enjoy an old time ghost story or gothic horror from the 60s and older, or if there is one of that nature in a more recent one, I'll be curious to try it out. Some examples were Insidious and Mother.
I'm so-so on Documentaries but it's not a deal breaker.

Oh, and ease up on really emotionally hard to watch films. I've seen some great ones in the HoFs, but if they can be avoided in this -- YAY

pahaK 10-16-20 11:45 PM

People can consider this as a free pump for the thread if they want to, but I'll just want to clear some things as it seems there's been some misunderstanding regarding my position. This is not an attempt to change anything either. I'll reply to cricket's post because it allows a well-structured response.

First of all, I'm not that worried about what's nominated for me (though, I'll return to that later). I'm more concerned about people like you, @Siddon and probably some others who've seen the vast majority of the films on the lists. In other words, my worry is primarily about not being able to nominate something I personally consider both fitting and worthy.

You may have noticed that I've skipped quite a few specialty HoFs. If I have a good reason to expect that I don't enjoy the majority of the nominations, I'll pass. No issue there.

A good portion of my favorites is well outside any consensus. The majority of the films on these lists I'm already aware of and a large portion of them are unwatched because I don't have the interest to see them. I'm way more interested in the unknown personal favorites like Al-mummia in the ongoing general HoF.

As I said, I'm not trying to change anything and I'm happy it's working for everyone involved. I don't expect to enjoy this so I'll pass.

Re: The Personal Recommendation Hall of Fame II

I am in for this and will start compiling ideas of films to nominate for the rest of you.

I am fairly easy about the type of films nominated for me, but I won't watch Funny Games, Pink Flamingos or Cannibal Holocaust, so don't bother nominating those. Horror is not my favourite genre, although I wouldn't rule it out completely.

Beyond that I will try to keep an open mind!

Looking forward to it :)

I’ll go ahead and wave the time limit for myself as well.
I’ll also pick out recommendations tomorrow sometime when I have time.

Sent in my noms for everyone who has signed up so far. I didn't go with a theme this time so hopefully I won't come in last again.

We're not suppose to send in noms yet...

There's 2 parts to start this. First you have to join. You have until Saturday morning the 24th to do just that.

Once Sunday morning the 25th comes, we will know who the members are, and then everyone can send their personal recommendation nominations to me.

Oh.

I honestly didn't even read that. I just sent them right away like I did last time.
Up to Cricket whether he wants to accept them or not. I'll wait until the right time to nominate for anyone else who signs up in the meantime.

Ha, I didn't read it either! That's how I knew, because I also had sent Cricket my noms...which he rejected:p

Hey Fredrick 10-19-20 12:41 PM

Not that I'm expecting any of these to be picked but here are a few movies I've watched parts of and turned off because I thought they were, to be nice, not too good ( I don't check off a movie unless I've seen it all the way through):

Marty, Breakfast at Tiffany's, The Wild Bunch, Harold and Maude, Goldfinger, Deep Red, Eyes Wide Shut, Dick Tracy, Alphaville, Oliver!, The Sons of Katie Elder, Billy Madison, My Dinner With Andre, Shakespeare in Love, The Birth of a Nation, Bowling for Columbine, Educating Rita. That's about all of them.

And if you're thinking "Boy, HF hasn't seen many *Woody Allen/James Bond/Charlie Chaplin* movies. HF should see more!" you are wrong. If nominated, I'll watch em, sipping on a giant tub of of vodka and prune juice through a very long straw, but watch out for your nom next time around. I'm sure it'll be right up your alley! Just kidding...a little :D

Harold and Maude
That's a shame. I really enjoyed this one.

I didn't pick anything on that list though or anything from Chaplin/Bond/Allen either so hopefully I made a good choice.

And actually, the one I picked for you in the last HoF, you had previously tried and shut off, and it ended up being your #1.

The Wild Bunch is the only one of those that I've considered giving another chance. Someday. Was gonna dive into it again for the Western Countdown but went with movies I had never seen at all. I hate a lot of really good movies - The Shining, Annie Hall are two of the worst movies ever, imo.

Thanks for the heads up on ones to steer clear of.

Wyldesyde19 10-23-20 08:31 PM

I have my selections made. Just waiting to see if any one on the fence will decide so I can send them all at once.
I think I have a better idea of everyone’s taste this go around. Hoping so anyways. Only two who are difficult still are Miss Vicky and Siddon.
I feel I’m about 50-50 on most others.
Feel better about Citizens, Ed’s, Neibas (if he joins), and Cricket’s however.
I just hope I’m not so low this time 🙁

cricket 10-23-20 09:02 PM

As much as Citizen says he's easy to pick for, I feel like I have the hardest time picking for him. I struggle with Ed too.

Same here, I have everyones movies picked out, but I need to give Siddon's movie choice some more consideration. I'm hoping everyone at least likes my movie choices this time around.

I can say that there's a ton of movies I've never checked off, not because I don't want to watch them but because I haven't gotten around to them yet.

Wyldesyde19 10-23-20 09:34 PM

I liked most of my recommendations last time around. Although I don’t recall who selected what.
Only 3 I didn’t like much were Before Sunrise, The Shop around the Corner, and Road to Perdition.
The last one really surprised me, as I had high expectations for it.
The two romances were smart choices, but didn’t pan out.
Don’t be afraid to select anything for me guys. I meant it when I said I have no limits on films I’ll watch. A though I usually avoid TV movies. And direct to video/dvd films.
But yeah, don’t be afraid to select a silent film, foreign, sci fi, Disney animated, horror, or westerns.
All are equal in my eyes.

I had a list, and still do, with several possibilities for each member. I picked out yours without hesitation and with total confidence. Last time I picked Rashomon because I thought you should see it. This time I picked something that is right for you.

I picked The Shot Around the Corner for you, I still can't believe you didn't love it!:p It's one of Lubitsch's best.

I like what you said about taking any movie recommendations:up: I decided not to say what I like or dislike as I figured you guys can rack your brains and try and figure that out yourselves;)

Wyldesyde19 10-23-20 11:19 PM

Rashomon was a great choice! Really enjoyed it, even if it was a little slow to begin.
As for The Shop around the Corner....I didn’t feel any actual chemistry between the leads. Stewart and....hmmm....who was the actress again? 😑 drawing a blank.
Either way, don’t let that dissuade you from picking another romance, especially from that era. 🙂

I don't feel at all confident about what I picked out for Thursday, Siddon, or Inmate, but we'll see how it goes. Am anxious but also kind of dreading seeing what ends up getting picked for me.

It was pretty hard to pick for CR. I thought he'd be pretty easy to pick for.
See how it goes this time around.

I think I got myself TOO hyped up for House of Games and was riding pretty high on the ones folks had chosen for prior to watching it.

I think I had more bad picks than good ones last time and got pretty d@mn lucky with you. I think the hardest part was finding a film you DIDN'T see. I do know ONE film I'd like to nominate for you if it doesn't get snatched up by someone else. And if it does I am properly f@cked lol

That was a surprise for me as well. I thought I had picked an ideal one for ya.
Looks like you suffered from the same Hightitis Expectationalitis that had with cricket's pick for me.

CosmicRunaway 10-24-20 07:12 AM

I actually think that everyone in these personal recommendations HoFs should make a post similar to MV's, or even just a broad likes and dislikes list. The biggest hurdle for someone like me joining is that I don't think I can pick films for everyone, but if I at least knew what genres to go for or to avoid, I'd feel more much confident.

From my point of view, picking for me is easy because I want to watch every movie on the lists. From your end, it would depend on how important it is that I like the movie. I discovered long ago here that other members pick for me better than I pick for myself. Sometimes when you aim for a certain type of movie, you can sacrifice quality for content. At least I know that I do, especially since I gravitate towards horror and very dark films. There's a lot of crap out there that fits my taste.

I'm in then.

If anyone's wondering what to nominate for me, I don't really mind. Don't be afraid to select something weird

I guess my only turn offs would be old westerns and old noirs (not deal-breaker's though), but I do like Neo-noirs and spaghetti westerns.

Wyldesyde19 10-24-20 01:35 PM

I’ll have a recommendation picked out for Hashtag today. Hopefully I’ll do better then my last pick. 😒

I had my movie choices all picked out...then...I started re-thinking and pondering my choices, and so ended up ditching most of the first choices in favor of a different set of films. To get to people's lists, click on the list icon by their name in the thread:

If they've made any custom lists, their actual profile will only show those but the list icon will get you to all of the site wide lists.

But here's the link to mine https://www.movieforums.com/lists/viewall/55955.html

never made a personal list of films, would like to do a Rewatch to Infinity List of stuff I continually rewatch but I did a write up in this thread about what works and what doesn't for me.

Citizen Rules 10-24-20 06:19 PM

Maybe what Siddon meant was that when you click on somebodies profile you use to be able to see their list. But with the addition of custom list some of our list aren't viewable from the profile anymore.

It's a great little shortcut and very convenient that I used as well. So is the Favorite Link right next to it (the star) to get an idea of what someone may really enjoy in a film and I used to gauge my pick for someone.

I’ve feel good for some, 50-50 on others, and Miss Vicky, Siddon, and Hashtag are the biggest X factors. Really hard to pin them down yet

I kinda did that too. I checked out top ten favorites and poured over everyone's list, then read about a TON of possible movie choices, before deciding that I'm not sure about what I picked:p But I did try!

Yep. No more OldBoy selections for you this time haha! At least not from me!
I’m just excited for the picks. Part of the fun was the anticipation of what was selected for me.
I liked my selections, loved a good 50% of them in fact, but I was a bit envious of some of your selections. Bambi and The Muppets for example.
Also, some people had the first two Body Snatchers picked and I was highly envious of that as well haha.

Well it's a little late now, especially since I didn't quite manage to check the accuracy of all my site lists yet. I made a good run of it last week, but I'm bad with titles, and the synopses of certain genres (looking at you, westerns :suspicious:) are often too similar for me to figure out if I've seen them or not.
