Fair enough, but I regard Copeland highly because I actually don't like the type of drumming that's trending these days - 400 bpm blast beats, double bass-drum fills, gospel chops... the list goes on. It's all exhausting to me. I like Copeland because he's so amazingly creative with the relatively little equipment. Also, the reggae influence man! :D
I love Ringo! His drum fills on Day in a Life are sophisticated + cool. Try paying attention to them.
Yea, I kind of took a little shot at the metal guys in my post with the whole nuance thing. I love metal, but the drum playing is too rigid these days. What I liked about Copeland was how musical he was with his playing. Peart had a more rigid style, something he attempted to correct later in his career, but I till think he pushed the approach to the instrument in interesting new directions, especially during the 70s and 80s.
I have trouble handing that accolade out. Both Peart and Copeland were very important to the evolution and growth of the approach to playing percussion, and they did it at a time where the average player was of a much lower skill level than today. Now, it seems like almost every metal show I attend has this monstrous, machine of a drummer that fires off insane fills and rudiments at ridiculous speeds. Some of them even play with nuance! ;)
I pretty much agree with this. Average technical skill level today is so much higher than back then. I don't play anything myself but I've always been into drummers (and bass players) and there's ton of good ones today (good ones being those who play with nuance and have good groove in addition to technique and speed).
Like I've watched James Stewart's drum videos a lot even though I don't really like Vader:
https://youtu.be/YmeTO1KS6ek
There are definitely some great metal players out there that stay creative and have a cool approach. Anders Jivarp from Dark Tranquillity and Brann Dailor from Mastodon come to mind...

I didn't vote for Lateralus. I think of Tool as a band that I heard too late for them to ever be a favourite even though they theoretically sound like a band I should love, but I still reckon they do alright and that Lateralus is their best release.
60. The Velvet Underground & Nico
https://i.imgur.com/ZobdOwJ.jpg
(89 Points, 3 Lists)
The Velvet Underground & Nico was my #1! Considered voting for White Light/White Heat as i've been more into that recently but i've listened to ...& Nico much more and i enjoy it a lot more overall. Nico definitely helps push this over the edge, could listen to that hateful little nazi sing every day for the rest of my life. Considered voting for Chelsea Girl or Desertshore as well but i went for another VU/Nico solo project. I actually went off VU a few years ago in a big way, only got back into them in the last two years or so and have listened to them hundreds of times since, sad they weren't higher.

Like i said earlier i only got into King Crimson a few years ago, like them a lot but don't think i've listened to them enough to include on my list. Man, that album cover cracks me up everytime, a dude on a different message board has it as his avatar and it makes all his posts unintentionally hilarious.

Nice to see The Velvet Underground and Nico make the list, not the biggest King Crimson fan but don't mind a little every now and then. Voted for neither though.
Love how the first two out of the gates today have really weird artwork and somehow the banana is so much weirder than the screaming helldeath face
I almost put Velvet Underground's Loaded on my list, even if it was a bit of a troll by Reed. Still a great record. Too bad my vinyl is warped at this point.

I know Velvet Underground has been in song tournaments. I don't remember the songs but I seem to remember thinking they were decent.
King Crimson could be The Mary Jane Girls cover band for all I know.

Of their Albums i think you'd like Loaded the most. It's the closest to straight rock. & Nico and White Light/White Heat are more experimental and s/t is pretty quiet at times which i know you don't really go for.

I dismissed The Stone Roses for a long time because a friend of mine hated them. Weird thing to do, wasn't that i pretended i didn't like them i just kind of took his word for it and never listened to them as a result. Finally became a fan when i saw them at T In The Park in 2012 (and again in 2016), I Wanna Be Adored is easily their most overplayed song but it's incredible being in a crowd when it's on. Great Album. Obviously there's been so many things like it since (and before even) that some might find it a bit boring but it holds a lot of great memories for me.
Also went with The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses to appease Iro, terrorist :coleman:

The Black Album is good but still only the 3rd best Metallica album for me. I've heard of both The Stone Roses and The Velvet Underground but I'm not really familiar with their music (listening to banana album at the moment though, sounds OK). Have listened In the Court of the Crimson King few times but haven't connected yet.
Prefer Closer but like this a lot too, it's obviously more "fun" i just think Closer has more replay value. #53 tomorrow is mine! The day after tomorrow is when we hit 100 points (#47 specifically), from there all the Albums have at least three votes.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Still_(Joy_Division_album)
Still is a compilation album by English rock band Joy Division, consisting of previously released and unreleased studio material and a live recording of Joy Division's last concert, performed at Birmingham University. It was released on 8 October 1981 by Factory Records, and was intended to both combat the trade in bootlegs and give fans access to recordings that were not widely available at the time.
How is this not what Still is?
A compilation album comprises tracks, either previously released or unreleased, usually from several separate recordings by either one or several performers.

Fair enough, was just saying. Suppose you could say it's both since part of it was going to be a studio album and part was a concert with songs that weren't going to be on that album as well as other unreleased stuff. Curtis death just lead to them being grouped together, like that quote says partly to avoid bootlegs, and probably to capitalise on Curtis' death as much as possible.

To me that Wiki definition sounded extremely lenient.
A compilation album comprises tracks, either previously released or unreleased, usually from several separate recordings by either one or several performers.
Let's prove that The Black Album is a compilation.
A compilation album comprises tracks - Yes, it has tracks
either previously released or unreleased - Yes, this time previously unreleased
usually from several separate recordings - No, they're from one recording only but fortunately this only usually applies so we're still good
by either one or several performers - Yes, this time from one performer only
Doesn't this apply to all albums?
:D
To me that Wiki definition sounded extremely lenient.
Here's the whole thing:
A compilation album comprises tracks, either previously released or unreleased, usually from several separate recordings by either one or several performers. If by one artist, then generally the tracks were not originally intended for release together as a single work, but may be collected together as a greatest hits album or box set. If from several performers, there may be a theme, topic, or genre which links the tracks, or they may have been intended for release as a single work—such as a tribute album. When the tracks are by the same recording artist, the album may be referred to as a retrospective album or an anthology. Compilation albums may employ traditional product bundling strategies.
And there's further clarification below. Defining stuff this strictly is dumb of course. Point is Still is unreleased and released Studio material which wasn't finished because the lead committed suicide, as well as their final concert with songs not on said album including covers and stuff. So i think it can be seen as both, doesn't matter anyway. My original point was Closer and Unknown Pleasures were the only two Studio Albums released as one while the band were still together, should have further clarified.

I was mostly joking, of course. I know nothing of the album discussed so I wasn't taking sides on that regard. Just wondered how the wiki definition would allow practically any album be called a compilation.

The Black Album is such a great conversation piece. Metalheads insert "not old Metallica, sellout Metallica, etc." Non-metalheads and part of the washed crossover masses this brought "whatever it is considered to be, hard rock, metal, etc." to such a broad audience.
If you were to define the MTV effect on albums, this would be on the Mt. Rushmore.

I can't take rym seriously tbh - for a start none of The Nolans albums have more than a handful of reviews and the majority don't even have enough ratings to 'go dark' so any casual observer probably wouldn't even recognise them for the outstanding act they were
On another subject - just listened to Lamar's Pimp Like A Butterfly (or whatever it's called), his voice took a little getting used to (wasn't what I was expecting) and I can't say it would become a favourite but I did enjoy the jazzy vibe. Certainly found it interesting enough to give his previous one a listen later.

I was too lazy to do a Top 50, so I just sent the top 25. Some of the albums here would have made the bottom half if I sent half of them which kind of makes me regret my lazyness.
That being said, this is turning to be a very solid countdown even if with no classical music representes, as I was expecting. Way too many different versions of the same pieces so people can agree in the same album.
112. A Love SupremeJohn Coltrane
(62 Points, 2 Lists)
#19 on my list, one of the most important albums on jazz history. It's one of those albums I have to be sitted on a confortable chair with a good pair of headphones and just listen to the music. To do any other activity while listening to this is just to disrespect the genius of Coltrane.
98. Master of PuppetsMetallica

Didn't have any Metallica album on my Top 25 but this would have probably made the 50, together with Kill'em All.
I outgrown Metallica now but they were a thing when I was on highschool so there's a lot of nostalgy.

Isn't Fight Club one of your favourite films? The song that plays when Norton and what's her name are holding hands and the buildings are coming down at the end is Pixies.

Oh, okay, then I have heard them. I don't generally pay much attention to soundtracks unless something stands out as particularly great or particularly bad/ill fitting for the scene.
And that doesn't stand out to me.

As much as I like Queen, they've always felt more like a songs band than an albums band to me. This is almost certainly their best (though Queen II and Sheer Heart Attack prove worthy competitors) and I might well have voted for this once upon a time, but now I just think it's very good.

I had TGTBATU at the bottom list. It was my only strategic pick in that it's not necessarily my favourite Movie Score (or even my favourite Morricone one) but it's the only one i voted for because i figured others would and i wanted Morricone represented. It rules anyway, seeing his score play out is the only reason i'd want to rewatch TGTBATU.

I didn't vote for any soundtracks because they rarely make for genuinely great standalone albums (the current exceptions for me are Blade Runner and Conan the Barbarian, neither of which I voted for anyway). I will say that GBU is one of the better ones, though.

Def Leppard was damn iconic in their time and offered a great pivot point for kids transitioning from radio pop to some of the more metal bands at the time. While I appreciate their place in history, I can't imagine where this would ever be in my top 50. Maybe top 100. MAYBE. Then again, without them I might still be listening to Let's Hear it for the Boy or Opposites Attract.
I should say that GnR's Appetite made my top 50. Overplayed or not, it is still a great rock album in its proper context. Short of Paradise City, there's not much of theirs that feels worn out for me. I'm curious if Lies makes the list.

I almost feel offended only 2 people voted for this.
If you ask me for my favourite Queen songs, I'd pretty much point to A Night at the Opera. Besides the obvious Bohemian Rhapsody, without a doubt one of the most brilliant songs ever made, this is filled with some well known hits and some surprising hidden gems. Freddy was at the peak of his creative genius here and sometimes the songs just stop so he can play and experiment with sounds which is something I respect a lot! It's one of those albums I'd take to a desert island and I'd advise everyone to give it a try, you may be surprised.
I'll leave with you The Prophet's Song. Pay attention to what happens from 3:30 to 6:00 (listen with headphones) and tell me where you see this amount of experimentation in music nowadays.

How I did it was: I asked a very nice man sometimes called Steve if it could be done 'cos it's just so much more aesthetically pleasing in my eyes and the very nice man said "No, but let me have a look" and voila, not ten minutes later he'd encoded it and come back to me with destructions on how to avail of it. Now set yerself down and hold on to yer hat 'cos this is where it gets mighty complicated ... in the User CP where you normally put your Custom User Title (I'm gonna assume you know where to find both of those as I'm almost out of my keystrokes allocation for the day) prefix the text you want with [*CENTER] ... and then remove the lil auld asterisk (*) ... save it and Bob will be yer mother's sister's brother :)

Revolver was my #5! Any of their Albums from Rubber Soul to Abbey Road could have got my vote with the exception of Yellow Submarine. Briefly considered not having a Beatles Album because i knew they'd be well represented without my vote but nah i'd be lying to myself. It's amazing, i've been listening to The Beatles since i was five years old and i've never got sick of them, i never even feel like skipping any songs on their Albums and they have some very bad songs. I've even grown to love most of those carcrashes. Dunno when listening to their worst songs i always wonder if they were on an unholy amount of drugs and were pretentiously believing they were gonna change the world with Dig A Pony or whatever to the extent that only a drug addled brain could make sense of, or if they were just goofing around with intentionally dumb songs that were fun to make. Obviously this can apply to any bands bad songs but i feel like i know The Beatles best so it's easy to picture this stuff. A few years ago Revolver was definitely my favourite of theirs, now i'm not sure as i've heard it so much that i often reach for The White Album or whatever before it. Still without my vote it would have been 126-128 so i'm glad i helped it out.

I may like some Tool, I don't like Oasis, and I don't care about either. I've heard of Wu Tang Clan but I thought they were a gang.

Champagne Supernova is ass.
You're probably right, but somehow it doesn't bother me nearly as much as any other song of theirs.
List so far:
#3 - To Pimp a Butterfly
#5 - Bonito Generation
#11 - Disraeli Gears
#14 - Art Angels
#15 - (What's the Story) Morning Glory
#21 - The Money Store
#25 - Never Mind the Bollocks
#30 - The Stone Roses
#43 - Surfer Rosa
#45 - Definitely Maybe
Still expecting most of my 20 Bowie votes to light up the top 30. No anxiety at all. I'm playing the long game here.

In Rainbows is my second favourite Radiohead, only voted for my first though.

Oh well, I predicted a Radiohead LP in this set, just not the right one :(
I like their earlier output, kinda drifted away from them after Kid A though. I'm fickle like that lol. None of theirs made my ballot.
Another band I used to listen to a lot in the 90s, but eventually got away from.

Never got into Radiohead.
I've heard of Radiohead but have no idea about the music they make. I'll give quick spin for this album.

As with most Radiohead albums, I'd say it's good but I still think of it at a remove - like it feels like something I should be into more but am just not.

I'd start with The Bends instead if i was you. Not that you can't just jump into In Rainbows but it's better seeing their progression chronologically, Pablo Honey is actually first but that isn't essential. Up to you though.

I second this - start with The Bends.

OK guys, relax :D I Switched to The Bends. Doesn't really feel like my kind of music but it doesn't make me wish I was deaf either. We'll see.

It's alright, I guess. Never felt as great as its reputation made it out to be (but in that regard, still preferable to Exile on Main Street).

Every Album is pretty different, In Rainbows and Kid A were the first two i heard and by the time i got to OK Computer and The Bends i was pretty shocked, at that age anyway.
