Welcome to MoFo Top 100 Animated Films Countdown!

On September 1, 2014, I asked the good people of MovieForums.com to send me their top 25 favorite animated features and shorts (excluding hybrids and television series), ranked in order of preference. The response was incredible. In all, 79 people made good on that request (though some lists had fewer than 25 entries) and between them they voted for 327 animated films.

The Voting Thread Can Be Found Here: The MoFo Top Animated Films - Voting (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=37030)

How This Countdown Will Work:

For movies ranked #100 - #21, I will post two movies per day.

Once we reach the top 20, I will post one movie per day until the final two, which will be revealed together (on or about January 29th, if my calculations are correct).

I will post four movies on December 24th and will not post any new entries in the countdown on December 25th. I will probably do the same for December 31st and January 1st.

If an unforeseen event prevents me from posting on a particular day, I will post two sets the following day.

Due to an erratic work schedule, I cannot promise to post at a consistent time of day. Some days the post will be quite late, other days it may be early. I apologize in advance if this causes any frustration.

If you are one of the voters, please do not reveal your full personal list until the countdown is complete. If you voted for a particular film that has been revealed on the countdown, feel free to say where on your list it placed.

Discussion of each film is encouraged.

A Note on Points and Numerical Ties: For those new to the list experience, each voter sent in a list of up to 25 films. Points were determined as follows: #1 votes received 25 points, #2 votes received 24 points, #3 votes received 23 points, etc all the way down to 1 point for a #25 vote. There were several numerical ties among the top 100. To determine order when ties arose, I first counted how many individual votes the films received. The film with the higher number of votes was given the higher position. If they received the same number of votes, then the film with the highest single vote was placed higher on the list.

Once the countdown is complete, Yoda will add it to the Lists section of MoFo. So be sure to check off what you've seen when the time comes.

And now for what you've all been waiting for...

The One Point List

These films each received only one point. This means that they each got only one vote and that one vote was for #25. Some of these are sort of afterthoughts, tacked on in order to fill out the ballot and others were deliberately put at that position in the hopes of getting them on this list and giving them some recognition in the countdown.

The only one I've heard of from the 1 pointers is Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, and I didn't realize it was animated. Even though all 25 of my picks are not that well known, I thought there was a chance they'd all make the countdown. That was before I knew there would be over 300 films with points. That's a lot.

Great design on the graphics so far, btw...

Thanks, though I can't take any credit for that. Skepsis93 created the main header, The Rodent created the header for the list post and JayDee created the header for The One Point List.

And a big thank you from me to them!

Damn it!, I knew I was forgetting something important - Skeleton Dance! That's what I get for throwing my list together at the last minute.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and The Skeleton Dance are the only ones I've seen from the 1 pointers. The former is a well executed, absurdly funny commentary on human greed and the latter is a fine piece of macaber classic animation.

Can't wait for the first two entries!

Yes, this list definitely breaks my heart. :bawling:

Over the Hedge was my #9.
The Adventures Of Tintin was my #10.
The Brave Little Toaster was my #24.
Ice Age was my #13.

Robin Hood didn't make my list, but it was a childhood favorite that was one of my final cuts.

The thing about NIMH that I really love is how it doesn't talk down to its audience. Like all great children's films, it trusts them to reach beyond their comfort level a little bit to meet its story. It really respects its audiences.

From Up On Poppy Hill was my #15. Too bad it just missed out. I totally expected it to make it. It's a fantastic film that somehow really got to my senses when I watched it for the first time. This is what I wrote about it back then in my review thread (it doesn't really say that much about the film as it was just a short write-up, but it does show my initial enthusiastic reaction):

I went into this movie without any high expectations, as it is rated significantly lower than most of Hayao Miyazaki's films, who of course is the legendary father of Goro, who directed this film. I must say I really like this film A LOT! I like it even more than some of Miyazaki's work, frankly. It has a whole different style, as it is way more realistic, but my god, this film had a great deal of depth! It's really a brilliant piece of film. The story works on three interconnected narrative levels, in my opinion.

First of all there is the Japanese community of 1964, right before the olympics, the event that kind of 'allowed' Japan to be part of the world again after its deeds in World War II. The country struggles between tradition and modernisation.
The film shows how it is not always good to completely ignore the past using a student house (the second level of the story) as an example of how a gritty building (past) still can hold some wonderful things.
Then there are the main characters, the third layer of the story. A girl falls in love with a boy, but because of something that happened in the past, this love seems impossible and wrong.

All three levels try to find a certain balance in a very similar way. The story is very ingeniously constructed. I'm not going into detail, as I don't want to give anything away.
I'm also a big fan of the music it features (Sukiyaki's Kyu Sakamoto is a very fitting musical symbol for the Westernization of Japan, as it is the only Japanese song that ever topped the Billboard top 100).

Great film! I absolutely adored it and I very much recommend it!

I've also seen Over the Hedge, Robin Hood, The Adventures Of Tintin, The Brave Little Toaster, Ice Age and The Secret Of NIMH.

The ones in bold are films that I really really like a lot and even considered for my list, so I'm very sad they didn't make it either. The others are enjoyable, but they never had a chance of being on my top 25.

I don't care what anybody says, Surf's Up is funny as hell.

I remember watching the trailer of it and thinking "That looks really stupid." Consequently, I skipped it during its theatrical run, but then later I blind bought the DVD on a whim.

I laughed my butt off and it quickly shot up on my list of favorites. It's one of my go to animations when I'm bored or sad. I've no idea how many times I've seen it now. It was my #6.

All Dogs Go To Heaven was a childhood favorite, but the singing puts me off now and it didn't get my vote.

The Adventures of Prince Achmed is another one I forgot, though I'm not sure it would have made my list if I had remembered it. It's good and everyone should see it. Surf's Up is okay (high 2.5 or low 3), but shouldn't have made the list. No comment on All Dogs Go to Heaven as I haven't seen it since probably 1990.

Might've seen All Dogs Go to Heaven when i was younger. No interest in rewatching it.

Haven't seen Surf's Up and probably won't. It looks like the majority of **** animations they've been bringing out the last few years. Happy Feet, Over the Hedge, Flushed Away etc.

I'm pretty sure From Up on the Poppy Hill didn't make my list, it may have, but it's disappointing that it lost out to these two.

Of the one pointers I've got to say I was a little surprised at Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs being there. Wasn't on my list but I thought it was quite a witty, visually creative little film. Not saying it should have made the top 100 but just 1 point seems harsh.

I feel bad about Over the Hedge not making my list now. Sorry Vicky. :( It may well have made it on to the tail end of my list if I've gotten round to rewatching it beforehand. And it looks like I should try and watch The Secret of NIMH sometime. Never stumbled across it in childhood and I don't think I'd even heard of it until fairly recently

I do however have the first from my list. I had Surf's Up at #18. I agree with Vicky that it's just a really funny little film that's got some terrific visuals and the mockumentary format is entertaining and something a bit different.

Anyways, I had Brave Little Toaster at number ten and there really was no plausible way to have it any higher. It actually would be 11 today, but I can't hide the fact that I'm disappointed it missed out. I kind of wish we could have been strung along the whole time thinking it had a chance, I like it better that way, kind of like Independence Day was strung out and I thought it made the nineties list. Its truly a sad day that it has missed the list, but it needed more voters. That being said, it is without a doubt a film that deserves to be on a top 100 animation list and will be better than many that will show.

I mean, let's face it -- your list and where you place things on your list depending on how you feel about the movie doesn't really matter.

What matters is GETTING WHAT YOU WANT ON THE OFFICIAL LIST!

That's all that matters. That's all that truly matters. Once the official list has been revealed and read, everyone's little paltry lists don't matter at all anymore. They are instantly all extinct. What's left is what's going on the official list. So it's all about getting what you really want on the official list. You can be cutesy and say, "Oh, but I really like this movie only THAT much, so that's why I didn't have it any higher....." But then don't complain if the movie doesn't make it. You had some fault in that. You had your chance and you blew it. I know how it is. I've blown it before with movies.

All Dogs Go to Heaven actually has a sequel -- All Dogs Go to Heaven 2.

Surprisingly, I haven't seen it, but why a sequel? The dog dies again? If it was All Cats Go to Heaven 2, I could understand it, all the way up to part 9.

And now I see there's even an All Dogs Christmas Carol. Christmas movie where the dead dog does the Charles Dickens novel.

And get this -- an animated TV show. All Dogs Go to Heaven: The Series. Aired from 1996 to 1998. 40 episodes of dogs dying and going to Heaven.

It's strange to see All Dogs Go to Heaven make it, while The Secret of NIMH, arguably Don Bluth's biggest classic (ecxept perhaps The Land Before Time), didn't make the list. That's the first big surprise of this list.

A great combination would be to watch All Dogs Go to Heaven, or the sequel or the Christmas special or the TV show, on cable TV, and during each commercial break, there's one of those Sarah McLachlan ASPCA commercials -- you know, with the sad music and the dogs and cats who are all near death. Surprised as well for Secret of NIMH not making it... Didn't make my list but it's a great one. As Yoda mentions, it respects its target audience, and Miss Brisby is a hell of a character, a female lead who can compete with the heroines of Miyazaki. A character with strong limitations, physically weak and easily scared, but quite strong-willed nonetheless. And in addition to these qualities there is as well something intangible in it. It has charm, and captures perfectly the atmosphere of a fairytale, to the point even a quite blatant deus ex at the end can be instantly forgiven because the delivery is incredibly beautiful and it fits so well in the overall mood.

I would agree with you if this was about someone trying to purposely ruin a list, but that's not the case. If they really want to see something show up on the list, it does justify whatever spot they want to give it. It's not usually the way I vote, but I don't see it as a problem. I do something similar now, I choose something I love that most likely won't receive any other votes and I put it last on my list. It then gets mentioned as a one-pointer.

Well, if you really want a movie on the list... that's the way to go. And if you feel that strongly about it, then there must be a good reason and it probably should be on the list. I mean, I think The Brave Little Toaster really should be on this list with as much as it's been talked about.

If I could turn back time (like Cher), I'd gladly replace All Dogs Go to Heaven with The Brave Little Toaster. In fact, if Miss Vicky allows it, go right ahead. Do that. And I often put movies that are really great at the bottom of my list just because I know they'll definitely make it and other people will vote for them.

Now if everyone did that with great movies... those movies might be in trouble. BUT, not everyone will because to a lot of people, those great movies ARE the best movies for them. They're their favorites. But for stuff that's not loved by many people.... you've gotta fight to get it on the list.

I'm sure lots of people strategically do things to get certain movies on the list. That's probably how a lot of STUPID FOREIGN STUFF makes it. A Bug's Life is a really good, seemingly fogotten, Pixar. I had it at #19.

This will be a trend with me. Like Surf's Up, Tarazan has been on enough around me but I have never sat down and given it my proper attention. So I won't be marking it off my list.

Already one from my list...

I had Tarzan at #9

Ever since I watched Tarzan at the theatre with my dad, as one of my very first movie experiences I ever had, I've loved this film so much! It's a bit cliché on some points perhaps, but Phil Collins' songs are absolutely amazing and some of the best he ever produced. The animation is great and snappy to look at when Tarzan flies through the jungle or the clever editing several places throughout. And most importantly, it hits you right in the feels in the end... One of Disney's best efforts and one of their most underrated films ever.

I recently revisited a lot of classic Disney childhood favorites - and movies like Robin Hood didn't held up for me today - but Tarzan truly did. I'm glad to see that it at least made the list I'm happy enough for that, and I hope more people will check it out if they haven't. Great film with many heavy subjects strung together with beautiful animation and great soundtrack.

Everyone chats it up via private messages -- "Hey Harry Lime... don't forget to put this MOVIE NOBODY'S HEARD OF at #1 on your list!" "Sure thing, wintertriangles!"

At least there's material for another video this time, Sexy... :p

Back on topic, I didn't vote for either of these, but have seen both and like both about this (3) much. A Bug's Life is still not better than Antz in my opinion, even after re-watching it.

Tarzan is good, but it doesn't compare to other 90's Disney films.

Those are pretty good movies for barely making the list. I haven't seen Tarzan that many times but I remember it's a good one with Disney again pushing the limits of a G-rated movie, although not nearly as much as in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. A Bug's Life was a personal favorite for awhile, but it's grown a bit lower in recent years. I still like it, especially the wacko sense of humor and all the homages to The Magnificent Seven/Seven Samurai. None for me so far with two in the 101-110 zone.

#15 The Adventures of Prince Achmed (#110)
#16 Vincent (#109)

I really like A Bug's Life. It's one of my childhood favorites. It had to make room for some other great films, though, so it didn't make my list. I'm glad it made it. The film has a very rich, microscopic world that always felt magical to me.

Tarzan is a minor Disney, in my opinion, but it's still a really good film. I particularly love the first couple of scenes (when there's no talking). Really effective storytelling. When I think of it, Tarzan is just a very physical film overall, which of course perfectly fits its environment.

Total Points: 58
Part of a Numeric Tie? Yes, tied with Frankenweenie and one other film, but had fewer votes than the other two.
3 Votes: 4th Place (22 pts.), 7th Place (19 pts.), 9th Place (17 pts.)
Special Note: It's Such A Beautiful Day (2012) nearly became an unintended casualty of the decision to allow shorts in the countdown. This feature film is a compilation of three of Hertzfeldt's shorts - Everything Will Be Okay, I Am So Proud Of You, and It's Such A Beautiful Day - seamlessly combined into one film. Between its three voters, it managed enough points to make the list, but two other voters gave points to Everything Will Be Okay instead.

I had It's Such a Beautiful Day at #4

That is my 2nd highest placed movie that I saw in connection to making this list... 3 entries of my top 10 are films I hadn't seen before putting together my list and went on that animated rampage. :p

This really is a love or hate movie and many people would probably believe that 4 is way too high, but I just fell in love with it as soon as it began. I loved the crazy narrative, the insane and twisted ideas and thoughts, and the philosophical aspect of it. Also, the animation was indeed simple yet it felt so unique especially when mixed with live action at certain points. It was just one of those movies that caught me and didn't let go, therefore it's also one of those movies I just can't explain why I love so much.

And I was one of these two. It's such a beautiful day as a combination missed my list (I would still consider it for a top30 or 35), I think the shorts work very well combined, but still there are marginal differences in quality among them; Everything will be Okay is the best, and my third favorite short film of all time. Anyway I'm really glad to see this entry in the list.

I was kind of offput by the idea of counting short and feature films together; it is something I had never done before, so ordering the stuff was quite difficult at times. And in general I think that votes for short films tend to be more dispersed, so they will probably end up being misrepresented in this top.

I haven't seen It's Such a Beautiful Day, but I saw Everything Will Be Ok which is one of the three parts of the former, and that one is very good. I'd call it "experimental animation", but its wicked sense of humor makes it very entertaining. I also was impressed with the non-CGI effects used in the "blank part" of each frame in the latter part of that short, but I'll admit that it does feel like the beginning of a bigger story.

I've always loved the live-action Frankenweenie, which has some spectacular B&W photography and a perfect take on the first two Frankenstein movies. The animated one expands the story, and even goes into Godzilla territory! It's very good too, but I didn't vote for it although I considered it. After the initial sting of disappointment, I can see and say that the list is starting out just fine.

Hugo the Hippo remains one of the absolute worst and most misguided films I have ever seen. And I first saw it when I was six-years-old, in the theater. Damn thing gave me nightmares. It was like a cruel drug trip for the kindergarten set. It has an odd lineage. It was produced and made in Hungary with co-production and financing coming from America, sort of, as the company that owned the French perfume company Faberge financed this turkey(???).

Here's the basic story (I'd say spoiler alert, but I hope none of you ever sees this): in Zanzibar harbor, the water is shallow enough that supplies are brought to ships by hand, large bucket brigades, moving the goods across the water. A gang of sharks, who are dressed like a Nazi motorcycle gang (seriously) enter the harbor, start eating the workers, and the city is thrown into crisis, unable to export their goods. So, the Sultan of Zanzibar has a great idea: bring in a bunch of hippos to fight the sharks. Sorry, can't make this ***** up. The hippos, being natural enemies of the sharks (???) defeat them, and the port opens once again. At first, the hippos are treated as heroes, but over time, the people forget about them and stop feeding them. The hippos rampage through the city looking for food, and rather than feed them, the Sultan's evil adviser, Aban-Khan, orders that all the hippos be slaughtered. They are, except for young Hugo, who managed to escape and flee to the countryside. After seeing his family and friends killed.

Out in the country he meets some children who instantly fall in love with him and feed him, but when the adults find out, they put Hugo on trial for wasting the time of the kids, keeping them from their chores and schoolwork. No, really. A trial, in a courtroom. Ultimately the Sultan, who did not order the slaughter, appears at Hugo's trial, basically apologizes, Hugo is seen as a hero again, and he lives out the rest of his days in the idyllic country with the children.

http://www.movieforums.com/community/attachment.php?attachmentid=18757&stc=1&d=1417726998

This was a real movie. Marketed for children.

But wait, it gets worse. As if that plot wasn't fu*kin' bizarre enough, the animation is cheap and ugly, the songs written for the flick - yes, this is also a Musical - are even worse than the animation, and lastly the hodgepodge of actors they enlisted for the roles are just plain baffling (at least the English-language roles, as it was released in Hungarian in Hungary).

Burl Ives, who of course narrated the Rankin-Bass "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" special, among others, is the narrator here. OK, that one makes sense. Not sure why Burl agreed? Crippling debt and a complete lack of dignity are the only things that make sense. English character actor Robert Morley, who appeared in dozens of films on both sides of the pond including The African Queen and Topkapi, is the voice of The Sultan. Again, no idea why he would take the job, nor why they went British for the Sultan of Zanzibar (?), but as far as a quality get, good for them. From there it gets downright weird. Some of the songs are sung by Marie Osmond and her little brother Jimmy. Again, for realzies. And for the voice of the evil Aban-Khan who orders the hippos murdered, why naturally they got Paul Lynde! America's favorite center square, known for his trademark over-the-top fey extremely stylized delivery. He voiced Templeton the Rat in the original Charlotte's Web, and of course he'd be your Aban-Khan. At least we were spared from him singing a song (see Bye, Bye Birdie).

Oh, and Hugo the Hippo is also casually racist, brutal (for a children's movie), and some of the sequences are fashioned in a psychedelic mode. Imagine a fourth-rate Yellow Submarine, minus The Beatles or any artistry what so ever, and infused with Colonialism, murder, and the Osmonds. It was, thank goodness, a huge bomb, financially. It cost upwards of a million mid-1970s dollars to produce, and made virtually nothing back.

http://www.movieforums.com/community/attachment.php?attachmentid=18758&stc=1&d=1417727030

So....why did I include this smoldering turd on my list? Because honestly, it haunted me so much - we even had the picture book that accompanied it, to keep the nightmare fresh - that I must include it, as it is burned into my brain. It definitely made an impression, albeit a horrifyingly negative one. Copies of this catastrophe are nearly impossible to find, and if you do come across it, it is likely a poorly made bootleg.

I have no idea what possessed my father to take me to this movie, or to stick it out until the bitter end (the U.S. cut was only about 75 minutes), but I assume he had not read any reviews for it, just saw there was a new cartoon out, and then he subjected me to Hugo the Hippo. He's lucky Child Protective Services wasn't called.

Welcome to my nightmare.

Sorry I didn't see this early, but yeah, like Rauldc said, I would say it feels like a moving comic strip. I'm not trying to be rude or smug about it. I enjoyed it. It is extremely well written and fairly moving. I wouldn't go see this on the big screen though. I wouldn't recommend it to someone who is wondering what movie to watch. It feels like a novelty that I would tell my friend to check out on youtube.

Its funny because I am usually more about the script than the visuals when it comes to my movie sensibilities. In the case of It's Such A Beautiful Day I seem to be on the other side of the debate.

Everything that has been "sucked" out of the animation aspect of the film is thrown into the narrative instead. I could "watch" the movie with closed eyes and still love it, although the visuals do add a lot to the film and make the narrative work even better overall.

When did I brush it off my shoulders or call it lazy and stupid? How many times have I been told on this forum that film is a visual medium. Show don't tell, narration is lazy exposition. Now here is a movie where, like you said, the whole thing is about the narration. I simply say it doesn't fit into the classic example of a film and I am off my rocker.

I swear to God, the internet drives me crazy sometimes. Think the way we think without reservation or you are completely against us. I like the It's Such A Beautiful Day for God's sake. If this conversation goes much further I probably won't though.

Seems simplicity is needed here.

Right, because I don't agree with you so it must just be ignorance.

I actually wasn't even directing my answer to you. Mostly it was to rauldc as he was the one stating the comic strip thing in the first place. :) That's also why I didn't quote you and also why I devided my answer in two parts, with the first one being more direct, and the last few lines being more in general. Sorry if that was a bit unclear.

That's fine, but he didn't call it lazy or stupid either. I just don't think pointing out that this is different than a what we traditionally consider film, and thus not being sure how to rank it against other films is somehow a slight. I doubt the creators would even be offended by this. Maybe the fact that It's Such A Beautiful Day can't be slotted so easily makes it even better.

Okay. The lazy, simple, and stupid seemed to be implied but apparently that is because I am lazy, stupid, and simple. I digress. Off to watch a movie.

You know, for this countdown, the problem isn't that it's not my idea of "animation" because All Dogs Go to Heaven, Tarzan, Surf's Up, Frankenweenie... not this It's Such a Beautiful Day thing, but the others... the others ARE my idea of animation. So, so far, so good. I mean, the first movie of the countdown was #8 on my list, so we're okay.

The problem with this countdown, though.... is that it's ANIMATION.

At what point is everyone gonna get bored? I mean, we're waiting on things like Surf's Up and Frankenweenie and All Dogs Go to Heaven. And we're only in the '90s. Not 1990s -- 90 through 99 of the countdown. There's a hell of a lot more stupid cartoon movies to go through.

My complaint this time is that this isn't the 1960's Movie Countdown. I just think that would have been more interesting, don't you? I mean we're all sitting around waiting for things like Lady and the Tramp II. This is nothing but a glorified version of Rodent's ridiculous Comic Book Movies countdown.

It's Such a Beautiful Day is very much a film. And it's a great one. I don't remember if I was the #7 or #9 voter, but I was one of the two. *shakes fists at Swan for not voting for It's Such a Beautiful Day*

Are you sure it's an actual movie and not a novelty or something like that?

I'll reserve my arguments for when not enough anime make this list. Someone has to play the role of Guap.

If you're not interested in the animation countdown, there are plenty of other threads that you can read while you're waiting for the 1960s countdown to begin, or you can even start some new threads.

Personally, I love animation, and I'm looking forward to this countdown. :)

Burn. If you can get anyone to say they would pay $10 to see that in a theater, I will take it all back.

Speaking of animated movies...Takahata's The Tale of The Princess Kaguya may or not be available online now.
