Got a Disney twofer for you today.
Lady and the Tramp was a big childhood favorite for me and one that I seriously considered for my ballot, but in the end my fondness for the film is almost pure nostalgia. I still like it as an adult, but it doesn't hold the same magic for me that it did when I was younger.
The Emperor's New Groove is one of the first films I watched following the end of the anti-animation phase of my teen years. It's really funny and stands as the only David Spade performance I've ever enjoyed, though his Rules of Engagement co-star Patrick Warburton absolutely steals the show as villain Yzma's henchman Kronk. Too bad the sequel, Kronk's New Groove, was garbage. Still, the original film remains a favorite and got my vote at number 16.

Toaster sucks, get over it.
Everyone has their own nostalgia, and nobody can comprehend anyone else's. What was an immutable part of your childhood was just a movie to someone else, and vice versa.

I remember watching New Groove in the theaters at 7 or 8 3-4 times. Loved it so much.

Seen both, voted for neither. But I do enjoy them both, though.
I would've had to rewatch them if I would ever seriously consider them, and I didn't have time for that.

I voted for Emperor's New Groove, superb animation. Kronk is a wonderful character.
I'm glad Sarah posted just before Lady and the Tramp was revealed because her mom and I brought it to the hospital and were watching it while waiting for Brenda to be far enough along to enter the delivery room and give birth to Sarah. :) It was one of our faves, and of course, a very romantic film. Besides, it has these two villians:

Despite its sentimental value and the fact that it's really good, I didn't vote for it. I like The Emperor's New Groove too.

I saw The Emperor's New Groove for the first time this hear (at my girlfriend's insistence) and I simply couldn't stand it. I understand its appeal, indidn't find he jokes funny, the narrative compelling nor the characters interesting to watch. Even the animation seemed subpar.
The Lady and the Tramp is one that I've gradually grown to like since first seeing it as a kid. I can get behind this one, even if I won't exactly call myself a fan of it.

I don't remember Lady and the Tramp well enough. I loved it when I was a little kid -- main reason why I put it on my list.

Sweet! Something I voted for! Lady and the Tramp was my number 23.
23. Lady and the Tramp
Lilo & Stitch was my #18. I not only connect with Lilo, but also her older sister as I have had to care for my siblings in such a way once upon a time. Also the family line always gives me a lump in my throat. I can't believe no one has mentioned the cross dressing alien yet!
Ponyo is probably my least favorite of Studio Ghibli (though I still have a few that I need to watch *cough* The Wind Rises *cough*). Having said that it is still pretty cute.
The Emperor's New Groove is insanely rewatchable for me. I didn't vote for it, but I do love it. Did anyone else play the video game? Great stuff. Sometimes I think it'd be easier to learn Squirrel than Russian.
Lady & the Tramp is not a favorite Disney of mine. The Siamese cat song was probably the high point for me, but I just have never loved this movie.

I love Lady and the Tramp, but I just couldn't fit all of my favorite Disney films on my list with room for other movies too, so sadly, it got cut. But I love it so much that I bought a statue of the Lady and the Tramp spaghetti scene.
I've seen both David Spade and Patrick Warburton in movies and TV shows, and I find both of them very annoying, however having said that, I thought The Emperor's New Groove was hysterical. Again, I just couldn't find a spot for it on my list, but I'm glad to see that it made the list anyway.

I watched it a month ago or so, it didn't have the same magical effect as it did when I was little, but it will always be one of my favorites, it's beautiful and charming.

Ah, Lady and the Tramp... What a deliciously charming, warm and nostalgic film that is! I had it at #16, but it could've easily been higher. It's of course a childhood favorite, but I've seen it as an adult too and it's one of those films that stay relevant and interesting.
I've always had a special affection for this film. The reason for that is probably because the film has such an old-fashioned, magical and still realistic atmosphere. The perspective of a dog on family life and suburbia in the '50s simply is an idea that really works for me. The sense of "wonder" that this innocent perspective brings to the story is ultimately what makes it such a brilliant film, I think. Every moment has an additional charge to it that (for the most part) doesn't exist in films that center on human beings (especially modern films, which always try to be as self-conscious as possible).
The film also doesn't shy away from darkness. It seriously contains some very thrilling and sad moments that today's animation pictures mostly seem to avoid. The fact that these fearful moments are grounded in reality, makes them even more disturbing.
As I said before though, it's the overall mood of the film that makes it such a rewatchable and rewarding experience. The music is absolutely fantastic and the seemingly perfect environment of nice houses, beautiful gardens, large parks by moonlight and the back alley of an Italian restaurant gives the film a very romantic feeling, while also making the dark threats that approach this wonderful world feel even more effective and problematic.
The film also has a very playful tone at times, of course (especially through the character of the Tramp). Here's a funny scene, for instance:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ubx2VrJkbJs
Here's also an example of that inherent "wonder" that's such an important aspect of this film (and look at how beautifully old-fashioned the chambers were decorated back then):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJxgQD3H9l4
The use of sound is absolutely remarkable. This is truly a great film. One that I'll definitely show to my kids if I ever have any someday...
-----------------------------------------
I also like The Emperor's New Groove. It's one of those funny, enjoyable Disney films that make you laugh at the exact same moments everytime you watch it. The eccentric characters, the weird take on a classic storyline and the situational (and often unexpected) humor make for a very cool film experience!

I didn't vote for Lady and the Tramp because I haven't seen it in a long time. I only voted for 4 childhood favorites. If I had seen many of them recently, it probably would've been about double that.
I never considered watching The Emperor's New Groove because I didn't know it was that popular.

82. Lilo & Stitch 3.5
Very good, enjoyable film with a great sense of humour and strong emotional center about family life, any pet lover will surely love this. I probably saw it loads of times when I was younger and my younger sister has probably watched it loads too. Didn't vote for it, but a good film.
81. Ponyo
One of the few Miyazaki that I haven't seen yet, think I'd like it.
80. The Emperor's New Groove 3
Good, pretty funny and I enjoyed it when I was younger, never loved it though.
79. Lady and the Tramp 3
Pretty much the same here, although it's been ages since I saw it so I would maybe appreciate it more now.

Special Note: The feature film Allegro Non Troppo is about 50% live action and was therefore ruled a hybrid and disqualified for the purposes of the countdown. However, the film itself is a collection of animated shorts set to classical music - much like the more familiar Fantasia from Disney. This particular piece, set to Ravel's "Bolero," was chosen by the voters to represent the film.

Did not vote for the Charlie Brown Christmas special, but I am very glad it showed up. Have not seen the other one.
I absolutely love Charlie Brown Christmas. I guess I felt if I started including these less cinematic shorts that I would drive myself crazy. So none of those types of animation made my list.

I have, of course, seen A Charlie Brown Christmas several times in my life but I've never been a Peanuts fan and I haven't watched any of the specials in a very long time. I didn't vote for any of them.
Allegro Non Troppo, the feature, is a really beautiful but also quite funny film that I recommend to any fan of animation. I really struggled with the decision of whether or not to allow it in the countdown and I think this was a good compromise. I was not one of the voters for this piece, but I agree that it is the best of the film's shorts.
Give it a watch here:

I wonder how many more Christmas specials will show up on this list. While I certainly like A Charlie Brown Christmas, it is one of my least favorite Christmas specials out there with poor quality voice work, stagey production and overall dully told story (although it works as a whole, and is generally enjoyable). I would hope that a few others would make it in hiher than this particular one.
I have not seen Allegro Non Tropo, but I will have to now. I grew up in a band family and have played the saxophone (first alto, then tenor) in school bands, jazz bands, marching bands and pep bands since I was in sixth grade. Anything described as "a gorgeous send-up of Fantasia" is at least worth a look in my book.

So I just watched the link that you provided, Miss Vicky. That was absolutely amazing. Although it started off a bit slow and meandering to my taste, kt very rapidly transitioned into breathtaking. I am definitely making the larger film a priority to watch.
I had the piece from Allegro non troppo in 5th place. I love that whole movie - it's in my top 100. It's half a satire on the animation of Fantasia and half a satire on the way Fantasia was made and presented, and this part is funnier the more you appreciate Fellini. The B&W live-action section has a despotic conductor who keeps his orchestra of little old ladies and his animator prisoners until he needs them for the classical music accompaniment and the animations. This part is done as a spoof/satire of Fellini by way of the Marx Brothers. The "cartoons" are beautiful, spectacular, funny, melancholic, sexy and thought-provoking. I really wanted to vote for the Sibelius "Valse triste"/Homeless Cat segment too, which can be seen herehere (https://vimeo.com/46791317) but the whole thing is worthwhile. I used to watch the Charlie Brown every year until I was probably in college, but that means I haven't seen it for 40 years. :)

I've seen both, and I like both, but I didn't vote for either.
I watched about a dozen different Peanuts specials for this list, and I decided to only pick one for the list, and A Charlie Brown Christmas just wasn't the one that I picked. I already had a couple of other Christmas specials on my list, and this one just wasn't in the same league with those. Hopefully my favorite Peanuts special will show up higher on the list.
I watched Allegro Non Troppo recently for one of the tournaments here, and I enjoyed it very much. I might have considered it for my list as a whole film, but I didn't re-watch it to pick a specific short from the full movie.
A couple of Peanut specials including A Charlie Brown Christmas almost made it to my list because of me being a fan of Peanuts and a bit of childhood memory (still keep all of the Peanuts books I read when I was young), but sadly there were more important films to choose.
Haven't seen Allegro Bon Tropo, but it certainly looks interesting.

Watership Down was my 21. I watched it for this list and I am obviously happy that I did. Great characters, music, and I loved the mythology of it. Extremely well done and I can see myself watching the show, too.

Both of these were on my list. I had Watership Down as my number nineteen, and I'm the one who had A Town Called Panic the highest, all the way up as my number five. I first saw it at the Portland International Film Festival, and I liked it so much I went to see all three screenings of it at the fest. Definitely my sense of humor, big time. So glad enough of the rest of you were aware of it for it to make the countdown.
From my original review (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?anchor=1&p=604928#post604928)...
...inspired, chaotic GENIUS! Following the misadventures of a Cowboy, Indian and Horse who share a small house together, A Town Called Panic is relentlessly bizarre, beautifully anarchic, and incessantly hysterical. While the same criticism I just leveled at Moomin could be said here, that it is all action and no plot with characters who don't have a very wide range of physical expression, it hardly matters, because the difference here is in execution, tone, and that these funky little guys do indeed have personalities, such as they are, despite their physical limitations. Done in stop-motion animation with what appear to be common children's toys of an era or two gone by, the audacity of the insanity on display is pure bliss. I laughed like an idiot all the way through, and in the second half when it kept getting more and more absurd and surreal, the movie kept getting more and more delightful and deliriously comical. This one is a must-see. Truly.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ft7-yG35Ugw
My list, so far:
5. A Town Called Panic (#76)
13. Animal Farm (#89)
19. Watership Down (#75)
25. Hugo the Hippo (DNP)
Work and puppy-related concerns resulted in me watching only a fraction of the films I'd hoped to in the run-up to the Animation List deadline, but A Town Called Panic is one of the few I found time for before all that. I liked it quite a bit. Not quite enough to put it on my list, simply because it was one of those chuckle-the-whole-way-through affairs that didn't produce a lot of big, boisterous laughs from me, and because I found the visuals crudely charming more than impressive. But it was weird and fun and had a strange little logic to it that you sort of get in tune with after the first 30 minutes.
Definitely recommended, if only because it's so different.

My ratings:
100. All Dogs Go To Heaven 3_5
99. Surf's Up
98. A Bug's Life 3
97. Tarzan 1 (I really don't like the style of the studio, sorry!)
96. It's Such A Beautiful Day 3 (has some great moments, other boring ones, some parts suffered because of the low art quality/complexity, I like more complex art than the type used here, same reason why I didn't care that much for Mindgame as well).
95. Frankenweenie
94. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
93. Garden of Words 4_5 ++ (great movie, one in my top 50 list, some of the best art in animation ever)
92. The Fox and the Hound
91. Shrek 290. Anastasia 3_5 (for Anastasia, haven't watched the other)
89. Animal Farm (I need to watch this one, Miyazaki said it was good)
88. The Bugs Bunny/Road-Runner Movie (I watched this cartoon a million times but I didn't know there was a movie)
87. 101 Dalmatians
86. Paprika 4_5 Kon's more avant garde film that uses animation full potential to play with you mind and it doesn't sacrifice the complexity of art for it (compared to the movie I talked about above)
85. 5 Centimeters Per Second 4_5 (really powerful depiction of the psychology of the introverted person, such as me)
84. The Wind Rises 5 (should have been higher, best movie of this 25 set among those I watched, but I am a hardcore Miyazaki fanboy)
83. Mulan 1 (see my Tarzan comment)
82. Lilo & Stitch 1_5 (see my Tarzan comment, though this one is a little better)
81. Ponyo 4_5 (Miyazaki's worst)
80. The Emperor's New Groove 1 (see my Tarzan comment, is every single Disney movie showing up?)
79. Lady and the Tramp 4 (from the days Disney made good movies, really, the quality changed greatly over the past 70 years and the early films were way better in my opinion)
78. A Charlie Brown Christmas 4
77. Bolero/Evolution (from Allegro Non Troppo) 4_5+ (really great sequence)
76. A Town Called Panic
75. Watership Down 3_5 (good but I found it slightly too melodramatic to be a masterpiece, liked Plague Dogs more)

This is a broken record, but I like both, I recommend both, but I didn't vote for either. I apparently haven't posted about Lilo and Stitch here before, but it does have one wild and crazy sense of humor. :) Here are my thoughts about Ponyo:
Many great movies didn't receive Oscar nomination (like most of them because most are obscure foreign stuff). However in Japan it won the prize for best animated film among the five nominated ones:
2009
Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea
Doraemon: Nobita and the Green Giant Legend 2008
The Sky Crawlers
Detective Conan: Full Score of Fear
One Piece - The Movie: Episode of Chopper Plus: Bloom in the Winter, Miracle Sakura
The only one that could seriously compete with it was The Sky Crawlers though. Others were just mediocre manga spin-offs movies. Though I only watched The Sky Crawlers, so I would be prejudiced against the others which I don't really know.

Totoro is in many ways the best film ever made. It's simply absolutely incredible masterpiece of the purest form, in many ways, the only absolute masterpiece of the entire medium of animation. :D It's unquestionable in greatness like Beethoven's 9th Symphony. I believe it to be the only such work in animation, at least the least flawed one.

I respectfully disagree. I found it to be a thoroughly entertaining, but ultimately only average quality. It's probably my least favorite Miyazaki, failing to hold up against Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle and The Wind Rises especially.
I want to watch more of Miyazaki's work. I think I'll make My Neighbor Totoro the next one. I'll watch it soon.

I feel that a lot of what I liked about Totoro were better utilized in The Wind Rises, especially the imaginative interplay between the fantastical and the mundane. I loved the emotions and situations that the girls were working through, I just would have liked to see them developed further (especially with the mother).

I like the style of Heavy Metal. It has this fragmented and free-spirited atmosphere to it that I really appreciate. The film kind of fIoats through a universe where every strange thing seems possible. My favorite part is the beginning (the story with the cab driver), because it has this no-nonsense, hardboiled noir aspect to it, but some of the other sequences are also a lot of fun to watch for other reasons (the fantasy/sci-fi environments for instance).
Despite the fact that I like this film, I do recognize that it has many flaws to it. None of the stories is truly fleshed out, for instance, or nothing in this whole film really makes any sense when you start thinking about it.
It's just a fun and brainless ride full with naked girls, cool sci-fi/fantasy stuff and awesome rock music! If that sounds like something you'd enjoy, you should definitely give it a watch.

Hercules is not one of my favorite Disney films (that's why it didn't make my list), but I always thought it was a hugely entertaining film. Much of the Greek mythology in it doesn't make any sense compared with the real ancient stories (I'm a huge fan of ancient mythologies), but I don't even care. The story is fun as hell and at the same time it's also a cool and even kind of clever commentary on the phenomenon of stardom. I watched it not that long ago with my younger sister and I still liked it quite a lot. I'm also a fan of the songs in it.

The premise of the film is what turns me off, not the fact that it's anime.
Very understandable, but trust me the premise is not what carries this film. The human emotions, the heartwarming themes and focus on family is so strong and well done. And it's absolutely stunning to look at visually. It took me 2 minutes to accept the premise I think, and I love how the movie doesn't try to make it something big. It's basically introduced in the first couple of minutes and in a way that makes it feel like "that's just how it is" and then the movie has moved on to so much more...
Anyways, about "Wolf Children" in relation to the list, so sad to see it this low. But again, not many has heard of it or seen it and not many are willing to give it a try either because of the premise or the fact that it's new and hasn't got much of a following (yet).
But I defiantly recommend it to pretty much anybody. Great film

I rewatched Rudolph last week and, despite watching it every year, was surprised how poorly it held up and how ultimately... average (at best) it really was. The narrative is endearing, the voice acting well-enough and the songs a mixed bag that averages out to kind-of / sort-of decent. It's a seasonal classic, to be sure, but I don't feel it ever branches out beyond being purely kairotic entertainment.

I love The Hunchback of Notre Dame despite its myriad of often glaring flaws (the most pervasively obnoxious of which are the gargoyle sidekicks constantly killing the otherwise meticulously crafted tone of the film). It has my absolute favorite opening for any animated feature: Quasimodo's gypsy mother being murdered by a church official on the steps of a cathedral. Its largely memorable and endearing body of songs - including "The Bells of Notre Dame," "God Help the Outcasts" and "Hellfire" - are generally better than the best songs from other Disney musicals. The climax is dark, exciting and thoroughly memorable: a lot like Beauty and the Beast's. And if you buy into the theory that the gargoyle's are just figmants of Quasimodo's desperate imagination brought on by years of alternating abuse, neglect and isolation, even the more untenable aspects of the film become much easier to look past.
I like, but have never especially loved, Corpse Bride. In terms of animation and visualization, it's one of Burton's superior works. The narrative just always waxed way too romantic for my tastes, though, especially that bit at the end with the butterflies.

Madoka is my third favorite anime series (and I put it #9 for the TV list). I have never seen any of the films, but it's incredibly reassuring that they're well received (at least around here).
I haven't seen Milennium Actress, but added it to my watchlist after seeing the ridiculously awesome Perfect Blue.

Millennium Actress was my #2. It's one of my favorite films of all time. Here's what I wrote about it in my Top 101 thread:
http://nasen75.files.wordpress.com/2012/12/millennium-actress.jpeg?w=620
There's one more animated film coming up after this one and most people will probably know which one it is. I'll tell you about that movie when the time is there, but let me just get this on the record first: IF there's ever an animated film that can become my favorite animated film of all time instead of that one, it's definitely Millennium Actress! My first viewing of it (a year ago, I think) was simply one of the richest (animated) motion picture experiences I've ever had. The story is emotionally extremely resonant, the storytelling is refreshingly original and the visuals are simply FANTASTIC! The film touches on many truths about life and love, but it's how it presents those truths that makes it truly a spectacular and extremely effective piece of cinema!
The story seems quite simple at first. A TV interviewer and his cameraman visit a former famous actress who has kind of lived as a recluse for 30 years. The TV interviewer is a really big fan of hers and is really excited, while the cameraman is much more relaxed about it. Nothing prepares us yet for the sheer blast of originality that will come our way. The interview starts and suddenly Satoshi Kon makes one of the boldest and most refreshing moves I've ever seen. Instead of simply telling the actress' life story through flash backs, he uses the style and environment of the movies she has played in during her career to give us an insightful and wonderfully poetic look inside the soul of the actress. We're not merely getting an enumeration of facts, but in a surreal way, we're experiencing what she's going through psychologically.
We witness her quest for a man that gave her a strange key when she was young. She believes that he will give it all meaning and that he'll be able to bring it all together. She believes that finding him will finally bring her happiness and peace of mind...
Even if you're not into anime, you just have to check this film out. It's unlike anything I've ever seen before or since. The movie breathes love for the film medium, it breathes love for cinematic history and it's all the more fascinating, because this genuine love and passion is partnered with incredible animation, very skillful directing and a truly profound and existentially satisfying script. The creative genius behind this film, Satoshi Kon, has sadly died in 2010 at the young age of 46. He made a few other praised animated films, but for me, this one is his masterpiece.
Also, if you're interested in Satoshi Kon's work. Here's a cool video from my favorite Youtube Channel about the editing in his films:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oz49vQwSoTE
Genius.
Where is the Gong! when you need it?
And here is the first entry in my list, though I don't remember which position (I'll ask Vicky later to send it back to me). Millennium Actress is a rare animated biopic that brings a multi-layered narrative with Kon's usual mix of real and surreal, to convey a touching drama about a woman who devoted her entire life to chase an illusion, and made that the whole meaning of her existence. The absolute devotion it reflects for the movie industry and growth, the main source of its non-linear narrative, shouldn't be missed either. This is a wonderfully romantic movie that I'm sure many here will enjoy while they see a part of themselves reflected on the screen.
The Madoka Magica movie isn't much less wonderful. It ended up missing my list, but I'm quite fond of it nonetheless; I consider it the best standalone entry in the PMMM franchise. Of course, this comes from somebody who loved the series and this movie is nothing more or less than 4-5 episodes wrapped together with minor differences, but this was the part that I enjoyed the most when I watched the TV version, and seeing it again was a powerful experience, it even served me to appreciate some aspects I hadn't taken too much into consideration before (the conversation the mother and the teacher have, that is probably my favorite scene in the whole PMMM story) and helped me to understand aspects that maybe due to the overload of events I didn't fully assimilate in my first viewing. Its merit as a standalone movie is difficult to set but it's a really moving and absorbing experience by itself.
I'll comment on the other entries of this list later.
Edit.- That was fast, Vicky :D It seems Millennium Actress was my #16.

I haven't seen any Madoka Magica movie or tv series, seems like there are some very divided opinions about it on here. I'm yet to be convinced that it's worth the investment of time to watch it.
Millennium Actress was #23 on my list, a late addition. It's the only Satoshi Kon film on my list, it's certainly the best of his that I've seen. I liked the blurring of the lines between past and present and fiction and fact and film, all the film references and what it has to say about memory.

Time is actually something that's in its favor. It's only 12 episodes long; I've been known to watch the series back-to-back because of its brevity.
When I show it to people, I ask them to only indulge me for three episodes. I figure after those episodes, if they're not hooked, they probably won't like the rest. And so far, nobody that I've shown it to has stopped after three.

I'm still sceptical about how good this PMMM actually is. Of course, I have to give it a chance and actually watch it before I can say I like/dislike it, however, I'm really not sure if it's my kind of film.
I haven't seen Millennium Actress, but it was on my watchlist, so I should get round to it sooner or later, considering the glowing reviews it gets around here.
I haven't seen either but Millennium Actress was on my watch list, it was one of the few that I couldn't watch in time. I added it after I saw Perfect Blue as well.
I've heard really good things about it so I'm pretty surprised it came out at this number, I thought it would at least make it to #30

I had B&B Do America at #3. Saw this at the cinema and embarrassed my sister terribly by laughing (almost to the point of falling out of my seat) for the last 10-15 minutes. I haven't watched Beavis & Butthead do America. Never seen the series either.
When the wind blows on the other hand is an interesting movie with potential but I'm not very fond of it. The reasons may look stupid but my suspension of disbelief was completely broken by the depictions of the characters; the couple is naive to the point that it turns ridiculous, they have been and lived through two World Wars, and it's not like the movie forgets that this exists or tries to deny it, but their acts and thoughts don't match their life experiences... It seems to me that the movie tries to be various different things at the same time through its characters, and that seems absurd to me. In the end, what is the point? A tale about the devastating effects of nuclear war? A tale about naivety and simple-mindedness? A tale about old age and experience? Damn, pick one. Or at least pick two that don't contradict each other.
Rudolph was on my list, probably should have rewatched it before placing it there, but nostalgia is a powerful thing. c
Millenium Actress and The Wind Blows were both on my watchlist and now I feel bad for not getting to them. Especially The Wind Blows. Also, I am so sorry Yoda, I Prince of Egypt didn't even cross my mind when I made my list. I am an atheist and I still love that movie as much as I did when I was little. I think it's about all of those things to an extent, and I don't think they necessarily contradict each other. I think it's about how completely unready people of any age are for a nuclear war, how completely unlike all other kinds of war that have gone before it would be.
It's true that there are some inconsistencies in the time line of the film and the characters' knowledge and actions - although as the film progresses they do begin to lose their memory, and fear and isolation as well as sickness probably exacerbate this.
I think you could also look at it as being about how unready for old age people are - the forgetfulness, illness, loss of dignity, isolation, all the while not quite understanding the world they are living in now and how it isn't quite the one they lived in when they were younger, all of these things can happen to people without the nuclear war.
I had it on my list at #13

I've seen Kung Fu Panda three times. The first time was in the the theater. I wasn't overly keen on the premise and I don't like Jack Black but I trusted DreamWorks to put out a quality movie. I didn't like it. At all. Which struck me as a strange anomaly so after it had been out on DVD for awhile and the price came down, I bought it and watched it again - thinking that perhaps I just hadn't been in the right mood for it the first time. Nope. I still didn't like it. So it sat on my DVD shelf for awhile and sometime last year, I think, I was bored and thought "Well, maybe the third time's the charm." Nope. It's official. I don't like this movie.
I find Po to be annoying and not at all funny (like Mr. Black himself), the characters are not cute and my near complete lack of interest in martial arts means the actions scenes hold little excitement for me.
I haven't seen The Plague Dogs, but will eventually get to it.

I watched Kung Fu Panda on recommendation from JayDee I don't normally like Jack Black but I thought he was the right fit for this. The movie is a lot of fun and I loved the panda.

Madoka is my third favorite anime series (and I put it #9 for the TV list). I have never seen any of the films, but it's incredibly reassuring that they're well received (at least around here).
The first two movies are the TV series edited. I voted on the 2nd movie as it is one of my favorite TV series (no, I don't think now it's the "best thing ever" as I said ca. 18 months ago). Though I think the changes they made to the movies made the whole thing weaker, as it became a tad bit melodramatic in parts where in the original series was more subtle.
What I loved about PMMM overall is it's combination of entertaining and art. While there are more artistically sophisticated anime series like Haibane Renmei, Kaiba, Tatami Galaxy, RahXephon, Evangelion (to a certain extent), etc, PMMM manages to be more entertaining than all of them (though Ping Pong also manages to combine entertainment and art). While entertaining series like Attack on Titan manage to glue the viewer on the screen they are not very fulfilling and a bit cliche (the last episodes of Attack on Titan were full of typical shounen manga cliches). PMMM is as entertaining as Attack on Titan and as powerful as Haibane Renmei.
I haven't seen Milennium Actress, but added it to my watchlist after seeing the ridiculously awesome Perfect Blue.
I liked Millennium Actress more but they are in different genres, Perfect Blue is like an animated Hitchcock film, Millennium Actress references the life of Setsuko Hara. I rated it as 5/5 stars on my old animated films review thread.
Satoshi Kon is a really skilled director. I think all his movies except Magnetic Rose will make it. He is one of the most popular Japanese anime directors in the west. Though IMO he is not among the best, like Oshii, Miyazaki, Takahata, Yuasa, Sato and Anno. He is in the second league with the likes of Hosoda, Shinkai, Shimbo, Hara, etc.

My ratings:
74. Heavy Metal 4+ Great "musical". A collection of over the top short juvenile stories spiced with hard rock music soundtrack.
73. Hercules 1 (I love animation but I don't like Disney)
72. Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer (wtf is this?)
71. Wolf Children 4 (Very good Hosoda movie but not his best work.)
70. The Hunchback of Notre Dame 1_5 (slightly better but still not a fan)
69. Corpse Bride (Been meaning to watch this one for years.)
68. Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Eternal 5 (I had it on 1st place but thinking about it now I might have switched with a couple of Miyazaki movies which are more elegant in execution if not as heavy. Well, it's doesn't really matter anyway.)
67. Millennium Actress 5 (Kon's best movie IMO and very near my top 25 list.)
66. Beavis and Butt-Head Do America (I watched the TV series, nothing really remarkable though)
65. When the Wind Blows (I have been meaning to watch this for a couple of years now)
64. Kung Fu Panda (Also interested in watching it a some point. Looks like fun.)
63. The Plague Dogs 4+ (slightly too heavy handed and a bit simplistic but still powerful experience)
So far 2 from my top 25 list. About half of it consists of obscure stuff which nobody else here has watched though but the other half probably will make it through.

I disliked the changes they made in the movie though. They had 96 minutes of "footage" from the last 4 episodes of the TV series and inserted a ton of scenes of nothing but dramatic music and "pillow shoots" to make it into 110 minutes. One of the common problems of sequels: trying to make it "bigger and better" which actually kills the elegance of the original. As result the whole thing became a bit less impactful compared to the series. For instance, I was just watching the first 10 minutes of the movie right now:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B27yEQYEwtE
(the English dubb is so awful...)
From the first minutes one can easily notice that the colors are darker and the music is more pronounced and the visuals have greater amount of detail (unnecessary IMO). The whole atmosphere tries to be denser than in the TV series. And the quality of the animation is certainly not movie level as they just reused the frames from the TV series and added some digital effects on them.
Notice also how much more dramatic and serious in tone it is compared to western animation in general and to most other anime as well. While appearing on the surface to be a kids stuff given the little girls in ludicrous costumes posters, it's firmly in the tradition of adult psychological thriller manga. It's appeal derives from implementing the tropes of a genre originally aimed at 12 year old girls into a sadistic psychological thriller.
Edit: A scene that I specially dislike in the movie version is 27 minute mark above. It's several minutes of melodramatic operatic music and red/black frames. Just a bit tad too much IMO. In the TV version the same scene lasted 10 seconds.

Kung Fu Panda is alright, I guess. There's nothing glaringly wrong with it, it's just so thoroughly average, like Cars.

Too many average animated films on this list tbh. But then again, we are not even in Top 50. Still it bothers me when some commercial popcorn flicks gets a higher place than some really thoughtful and unique ones.
Anyways, a Top 100 is quite a lot and most people who are not a fan of animation will most likely put commercial movies high as that is what they have seen. I'm not too mad though, my nr. 1 is a commercial movie though well respected (and to me, amazing). :p

"Commercial" and "thoughtful and unique" are not mutually exclusive. Also, I'd say your ballot is pretty well peppered with commercial films. Just my opinion.
When I first saw the ads for Despicable Me, I thought it looked stupid. I'm not a fan of the voice cast, I thought the minions looked really weird, and it was from a then unknown animation studio. I think I ended up seeing it anyway because a friend wanted to, but when I saw it all my prejudices against it went out the window.
It is really, really funny and the story and interaction between Gru and the girls is really touching. I even find the girls cute - especially Agnes. And the ending of the film brings tears every time.
Unfortunately, none of the studio's other efforts have come even close - I turned off Hop a few minutes in, I nearly walked out of the theater when I saw The Lorax and really should have, and I liked Despicable Me 2 but didn't love it. Still this first effort is very much worthy of this list and I voted for it at number 11.

This is weird. I watched Yellow Submarine specifically for this list and I was sure I put it in my top ten, but looking at my list now, I can not see it. No idea how that happened.
Despicable Me is okay, overrated for me although I can see why it has such an appeal to some people.

You must be referencing Yellow Submarine here.;)
Anyway like a lot of the list thus far I put Despicable Me in the I saw it when I was too old and it wasn't meant for me category. However with the amount of these types of films that are showing up and the way you guys talk about them, that doesn't seem to be the case. Plus there are a few animations made in the last few years that did make my list. I don't know what the answer is, but I do know when I watched Despicable Me, Kung Fu Panda, and a few recent Disney that showed up they just were not for me. Re-watches not needed because boy oh boy have I re-watched most of these.

It is indeed. And that's why I backed up my opinion by mentioning even my number 1 choice is a commercial film.
As I said, we are not even in the Top 50, this is pretty much what I expected in the back of my mind, so it's not a true complain, it just slightly bothers me that's all.
The Plague Dogs was my #6 and to be honest I'm disappointed and a little shocked it didn't at least make it into the Top 50. Maybe it was a bit slow at times and completely and totally grim, but I think overall it was very well done. The ending destroys you and throughout the movie I felt the unfairness of their plight almost physically. Very memorable characters and scenes. I listened to the ending song on repeat for a week. I am very happy that I was able to watch this movie and I owe it all to this list, so I guess that's pretty great.
Kung Fu Panda and Despicable Me were average for me. Despicable Me was very quotable and I do love the characters though. I'm getting extremely interested in seeing the Top 50.

I think what Meditation means is that the back half of this list looks like the comic book list, things just thrown on there that are questionable calls to be on there. Things that not many care for but a handful do so that's why they've made it. Not a bunch of stuff that people said "hey, that's awesome, but it couldn't squeeze onto my list". The top 50 will be much stronger and will not have any unworthy selections.

No, the bottom half of this list looks like every MoFo list ever. Not just the Comic Book list, but ALL of them. The sixties list is will not be different. The seventies list wasn't any different.
In fact, this list had the second highest number of voters of any of the MoFo lists, beaten only by the Seventies List. So it's actually a greater representation of the collective tastes of this board than nearly all of the others are by simple virtue of the level of participation it received, making each and every entry entirely "worthy."

Despicable Me was my #10. I liked the idea that it was about a slightly rubbish super villain who adopts these kids for his nefarious plot but ends up really becoming their dad. It was done in a fun and not overly sentimental way which worked really well, with plenty of funny lines and moments. The minions are fun, too, and very unique. I think they got the tone just right. My favourite part is when he takes on the unfair fairground stall proprietor.

Despicable Me was #4 on my list. The movie has a fun story, and a unique character with Steve Carrell's Gru. I think the Minions are some of the funniest animated characters ever. Anyone who hasn't seen them should definitely see this movie, and then watch some of the short Minion animations on YouTube.

I wanted to watch Despicable Me but ran out of time.
You should definitely see both Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2. The first movie has a better story, but the second one focuses more on the Minions, so it's more fun.
There are at least two sequels in the works, so you'll want to be ready for them. The voice cast for the upcoming Minions movie includes Michael Keaton, Sandra Bullock, and Jon Hamm. :)
Not only is the music great, but the animation is spectacularly "different" (for want of a better word) in oh so many ways. I'm much more impressed with the look of Yellow Submarine now than when I was younger.
I know I'm infamous for being a cry-baby, but I bawled at parts of Despicable Me. In fact that was one of the problems with the sequel - Gru was no longer "despicable". It should have been called Spicable Me, but that would have confused everybody and gotten the company accused of racism and poor grammar instead of good humor. :)

Hercules was my #11. We had been learning about Greek mythology in class, which was a much more enjoyable subject than whatever the hell else they were teaching us back then, so I was already interested in all the various gods and characters and monsters and whatnot. Plus I used to watch the TV show from time to time starring Kevin Sorbo, so the Disney movie came along at the perfect time. My initial viewing was at an after-school pizza party the school held for students who had made the honors list. One room was showing Air Bud, the other Hercules. I chose the latter, and it instantly became one of my favorite animated movies.
For me, James Woods's amazing vocal performance as Hades is right up there with Robin Williams as the Genie. He brings something completely unexpected to the character. In fact, I used to actively root for Hades, which might be worrisome, but he was just so damn entertaining and funny and wickedly cool in the film that I couldn't help it. I used to hate the songs in most Disney films, but Hercules and The Lion King were the exceptions. Even after all these years, I still have some of the lyrics to "Zero to Hero" stuck in my head. The movie was fun, fast-paced, funny, entertaining. Even as a kid, I had an interest in the macabre, so the creepier imagery and characters during the Underworld sequences appealed to the burgeoning weirdo/gothic side of me. The voices fit the characters perfectly, whether it was Danny DeVito as Phil, or outside-the-box choices like Bobcat Goldthwait as Hades's henchman or Paul Shaffer as Hermes.
I still own the movie on VHS. I watched it a few years ago and enjoyed it just as much as I did when I was a kid. I maintain that it's one of Disney's most underrated animated features.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was my #17. Santa may bring the presents every Christmas Eve, but Rudolph's TV special ushers in the holiday season. I've been watching Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer since I was at least three years old, and I still watch it almost every year when Christmastime nears. I'm not a festive guy. I generally dread the holiday season. Yet Rudolph is so inherently cute and charming and magical that it continues to bring a smile to my face and conjure Christmas memories of old every time I watch it.
The stop-motion animation isn't as smooth as what we're used to nowadays, but considering that it's fifty years old, I think it holds up well for the most part. The story itself is highly imaginative and even somewhat surreal. The characters are iconic. Burl Ives's narration is total class. The songs are hokey yet enjoyable. The abominable snowman used to frighten me to death as a kid, so those particular scenes were quite effective. Plus the themes are important and timeless. Many times throughout my life I've felt like a Misfit Toy, so I think Rudolph is a vital early tool to teach children that it's okay to be different and to celebrate those differences instead of hiding who you are.

Beavis and Butt-head Do America was my #20. I never expected it to make the countdown, so its inclusion is a very pleasant surprise. I also voted for the show in the TV Countdown, so I'm a big fan. I can't count the number of times I've quoted these lovable idiots or imitated their iconic laughter and their voices. (For the record, I can do a much better Beavis impersonation than Butt-head.) Beavis and Butt-head are two of my favorite characters of all-time. Huhuhuhuh. Cool.
The only problem with the show is that the skits are so short, but Do America proved that Beavis and Butt-head could maintain their hilarity over an extended period of time without growing tiresome or repetitive. The film contains so many laugh-out-loud scenes, like when the boys start fighting in the hotel room over who is going to "do" the woman, or when they meet their fathers out in the desert, or when The Great Cornholio ("I need TP for my bunghole!") causes havoc at the White House. Beavis's hallucination sequence is a fantastic bit of animation, courtesy of Rob Zombie. I like Mike Judge a lot anyway (as of right now, it looks like my nomination of Hank Hill is going to win the TV Characters Tournament), and I think he excels at dumb, stupid, juvenile humor that actually originates from a smart place, if that makes any sense.
http://basementrejects.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/kung-fu-panda-opening-animation.jpg
Kung Fu Panda was my #24. I don't have any strong passion about it and I've only seen it once, but I did enjoy it a lot and I thought it was worthy of making the countdown, so I threw it on the tail-end of my list. I'm not the biggest fan of Jack Black, but I think he's the perfect fit for the character's voice. The core of the story is very familiar stuff, but it's one that has always appealed to me. I love stories about unassuming people who realize they're destined for greatness. The whole idea of "the chosen one" always gets me pumped, whether it's Po in Kung Fu Panda or Neo in The Matrix or Harry Potter in the book series or Link in The Legend of Zelda video games. It's wish fulfillment, I guess, since it allows everyday people to temporarily break from the drab monotony of existence and fulfill that particular fantasy of being meant for something important. I thought the animation in Kung Fu Panda was very impressive. The sequence where Tai Lung escapes from the prison was a very thrilling and memorable sequence. Plus it's a movie about a panda learning kung fu, so that gets bonus points just for being simultaneously adorable and bad ass.
My List So Far:
#6) All Dogs Go to Heaven
#11) Hercules
#15) The Brave Little Toaster
#16) Frankenweenie
#17) Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
#20) Beavis and Butt-head Do America
#24) Kung Fu Panda
Excellent write-ups, Captain.

I really liked Despicable Me. It almost made my list and it was one of the hardest cuts. I didn't even want to see it at first. I thought it looked overly cutesy and not very funny. It may be really cutesy but it's never irritatingly so. I love the kids and Carell does a great job with the voice acting. I can't believe I used to detest him.

The Illusionist is simply a brilliant depiction and revival of Jacques Tati's style through animation (it's based on one of his screenplays). It looks fantastic and it touches on the viewer's emotions through subtle details. Sadness, beauty... This film has it all! I love the sheer experience of this film. It's so warm and touching. It's like eating a delicious piece of warm pie while listening to sad, but beautiful classical music in the dark by the fire, with occasionally a more cheerful and hopeful fragment throughout.

Jungle Book has always been one of my favorite Disney films. I still consider it as a part of the classic Disney films, because I feel like it still has that vintage, old-fashioned vibe to it. The reason why I like this film so much is probably the environment it's set in. The jungle seems like such a rich, adventurous and sometimes idyllic place, even though it also has its obvious dangers. For a young kid and even for an adult, it's fun to imagine how it would be like to live as a bear in the jungle, drifting on a river and living the good life without any real worries.
That theme of escapism is also depicted in The Lion King (when Simba meets Timon and Pumba). In The Lion King Simba learns that a life like that doesn't hold up in the long run, because everyone has responsibilities to live up to at some point in their lives if they ever want to reach the full potential that lies within them and in Jungle Book the "bear necessities" way of living ultimately doesn't hold up because Mowgli discovers a bigger sensation in the end, the sensation of curiosity and human attraction that will probably lead to a "higher way of living" than he could ever achieve in the animal world. I love both Disney pictures for different reasons, but they do have that interesting theme in common (although it's resolved in a different manner).
Great pair!

Glad to see The Illusionist on the list, though I never got around it myself. I like the unique animation and it was one of those I really wanted to see but never managed to before the time was up.

The Jungle Book was one of the Disney movies that got cut from my list because I didn't want to submit a list that was at least 1/2 - 3/4 Disney movies. The story isn't my favorite of the Disney movies, but I absolutely love most of the songs. I'm glad to see that it made the list without my help.

I didn't watch either of today's entries because I've never heard about them. I think I'd like both.

We're 40 percent through and still only one film from my list...I'm starting to think that some of them might not make the cut...
