Awesome. Nice, big sample, but small enough (and enough films making it onto the list as a whole) that we should have some really surprising inclusions.
This should be cool.

Oh, if films have the same amount of points, the number of times they appeared on members' lists determine their spot. In this case, The Bourne Identity was included in 3 members' lists, whereas Iron Man was on 4 members' lists.

I personally expected it to be on there, about where it is ranked. I thought 80-90ish and it ended up just making the cut. Lots of people love it and even though I'm not crazy about it, it's a decent superhero flick. I wouldn't put it on a Top 100 of the millenium list myself; that would be a bridge too far.
I was honestly more surprised with The Bourne Identity.

You should. They're both decent films. The Bourne Identity is a solid action film with an ok story (for a change) and nice fight scenes. Your liking of Iron Man kinda depends on how you like Downey Jr's performance. Like I said before, I'm not crazy about it, but in its genre, it's a good film.

Oh and thanks to Yoda for stickying this,...
...but could the thread be moved to the 'important' section of this particular subforum :D. The initial MoFo Millenium Top 100 thread can just be turned into a 'normal' thread and can then be replaced by this countdown thread.
It'll be easier to find the countdown thread that way. Everyone immediately looks at the threads with the little sign IMPORTANT in front of them (except contrarians like PN, damn him).
Thanks!
Forgot it was the Reviews forum. I'll have to code in an exception.

Iron Man is a decent comic book movie, there's probably not all that much to choose between it and Batman Begins although I definitely prefer the latter. But it's not really up there with The Dark Knight. And I think The Dark Knight is going to be waaaaay ahead of Iron Man in this countdown.

......We come to it at last,....the great list of our time!
"Bourne Identity" looks like it has made the list because I put it at number 6 on my list, I assume giving it 19 of it's 37 points.
I feel that it is a game changer in the Spy Action Thriller genre. The Bourne series even forces the Bond movies to change their game, basically copying Bourne fight/chase sequences. For that reason I feel the need to give the Bourne Identity it's due credit, not to mention that it's a fantastic movie, with an amazing performance from Matt Damon. If Nolan's Batman is the "realistic" Superhero franchise then Bourne is the realistic Spy franchise.
As for Iron Man I didnt vote for it but to be fair it is a very good movie, perhaps dragged up by Downey Jr's charismatic performance.
Actually, putting a movie at #6 gives the film 20 points. :)

It's usually the least of the three for those who really like the series. Obviously, it's my favourite :D though I have to admit that I've not seen "Ultimatum" because I disliked "Supremacy" so much.
Well as a big fan of both Iron Man and The Bourne Identity I'm very happy with the start to the list (though I thought Iron Man would have been higher). And yes Iron Man was on my list so for those people not happy with its inclusion you can blame me! :D
For me Iron Man is definitely up there on the top tier of superhero movies along with the likes of Spider-Man 2, Batman Begins, X-Men 2 and The Avengers. Oh and obviously Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! ;D

Iron Man is fun, but Top 100 of the Millennium? I wouldn't think so. Surprised to see it on the list.
Bourne Identity not too surprised, it was a good mystery action thriller, that had enough people interested to have two sequels and a spin-off. Plus, Damon as Bourne is bad-ass. I watched all three Bourne films for the first time back to back. So the original was the 'freshest' to me. Plus, I liked the mystery elements that the other two films seemed to put aside for more action.
I'd be more interested in seeing the individual lists.

You guys remember this is just for movies 2000 and later, right? Don't let the word "Millenium" throw ya': that's 100 movies in less than 12 years. That means that, on average, any movie on this list only needs to be one of the best 8-9 for that given year.
It doesn't seem like it would be that shocking that people would think Iron Man was something like the ninth best movie of 2008.
TheUsualSuspect
09-12-12, 03:59 PM
Except we were putting our top 25 or so, so people think Iron Man is in their top 25 since 2000. That to me is shocking, not that it was probably one of the best of that year. Like I mentioned before, it's fun fluff, at least to me and nothing more.

Maybe some people don't really bother to see many films outside of the mainstream blockbuster types. On the flip side there are members of the forum who will see virtually every film of note, from all over the world, every year, virtually watching new movies daily. So their top 25 lists are going to contain some obscure foreign films that few members will have seen or heard of. I like to think of myself as somewhere right in the middle of those 2 examples
Out of 41 people maybe only 3 or 4 had Iron Man on their list and it has only scraped onto the list at no.100 by the skin of it's teeth so don't be too upset.
Besides Iron Man is one of the better superhero movies out there, I certainly enjoyed it, although it's not to be taken too seriously.
Ah yes, that's right. My bad. But I thought it was 25 minimum? Not sure how many people listed more, or if I'm just imagining that.
Anyway, even then it'd be like top 2-3. I'd have to go back and look at 2008, but I think I'd probably have it in my top 5 that year.

Black Dynamite at no. 24 on my list. Though I'd take A Prophet, Inglorious Basterds or The Secret In Their Eyes over this film for the best of 2009, I enjoy Black Dynamite's playfulness and cheeky references to a cinema long gone.
Off the top of my head some of my favourites of 2009: Burma VJ, The White Ribbon, Coraline, The Maid.

I think I know who had Hedwig really high. Although I think I pefer Short Bus. Hedwig is a nice little musical about a guy who wants to be a woman and gets an operation, which is butchered and he's left with an inch of....angriness, if you know what I mean.
John Cameron Mitchell, the director plays Hedwig, the lead role and for some reason the look reminds me a lot of Juliette Lewis.
Mitchell's best film is Rabbit Hole and despite that (and these two for that matter) not making my list, I do hope to see it on here.

I just liked the realness of it all, how it pushed the envelope but never felt like pornography, explicit but not in your face. I was surprised by the performances despite the lack of 'actors' in the film.

From what I remember, I thought it was too mushy and isn't it preaching open relationships and polyamory and such? One of those "Be Happy and Have Sex With Everybody!" films. Nothing's wrong as long as it's LOVE. They annoy me. Give me "Man Sleeps with Hooker, Wife Poisons His Drink" films.

Really I don't mind Bourne Identity, decent book too. I suppose it being at 100 isn't bad, but I don't quite understand why Avengers films are that enjoyable, even for the child in me. At least the comics had identity, the films are just phoned in. Specifically, I've never really liked Jon Favreau anyway.

As a lover of both the films I take great offence!!! :p
Also just had an idea that may have been good, but is a little late. When you were working out the list Brodinski you could have sent a PM out to people for comments on some of the films they listed. Just a little paragraph or two about why that person likes that particular film.
That way you could have have had #97 - Black Dynamite along with a picture and then undernearth something like - HoneyKid likes this film because "it is an absolutely hilarious film which both spoofs and pays loving homage to the blaxploitation genre, a genre I am very familiar with. With references to films including Shaft, The Mack and Coffy it is very knowledgeable of the genre and makes great use of it for some wonderful gags. And in the lead role Michael Jai White is terrific."
Or something like that. Just to note I've not seen the film, nor do I know HoneyKid's opinions on the film other than he likes/loves it so I'm just making s**t up! :D

Yeah, you're not alone. In hindsight though the idea that the movie is actually about Tommy Lee Jones' character does make sense to me, especially in terms of the ending which at the time I thought was just about the worst thing ever, but only because I wanted a big payoff for the Moss/Chigurh storyline, which of course I didn't get. Gotta rewatch it.

Aye. The majority of those 39 points are from my entry.
The Coens have maybe three films that are such masterpieces that it's kind of hard to say one is better than the others. So I won't say O Brother, Where Art Thou? is better crafted, or even a better film, than No Country or Fargo. But I enjoy watching it more than any of their others. It's one of my all-time favorite films by any director, in fact. The colors, the humor, and my God, the music. It's just gorgeous in every sense of the word.

It was pretty dull and not at all the masterpiece people were making it out to be.

I've still not seen the remake, and, while I liked the original, I can't say I was impressed with it. There's episodes of Wallander that are much better than that. Actually, most, if not all, of series 1 of Wallander is better than that.

GWTDT is a pretty darn good movie- featuring arguably the best opening credits ever. I didn't vote for it, but it was a contender. That being said, Zodiac and The Social Network are vastly superior among Fincher's films.

I have no earthy idea why Rise is so highly regarded. It's pretty entertaining and I was certainly impressed by the CGI, but the acting was hammy (Felton was cringe-inducing) for the most part and definitely isn't one of my top 100 for the decade.
I wasn't expecting to see American Splendor. It's been on my radar for a while since I love Paul Giamatti, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.
Oh, and I caught Master and Commander the other night. Not perfect, but you'll get no arguments from me about its inclusion here. Very enjoyable.

I have to agree with you here and I posted my thoughts in another thread having watched it the other week, why I can understand the film may be very enjoyable and isn't bad at all, especially when you look at the CGI and Serkis' performance as Ceaser.
But when you look past the apes the film is pretty poor and basically acts as a vehicle (that has little effort put in to it) to allow the apes to display their emotions and actions. The plot is unrealistic a lot, the acting is OK from post actors but nothing beyond what is required to advance the story (looking at Franco and Lithgow here) and the screenplay is poor IMO, some of the dialogue is so unrealistic and often unnatural such as the conversations between Franco and his boss.
Like I said I can understand how it got on the list, an enjoyable film that could have been worse but wouldn't get in to my top 25 ahead of what are IMO stronger films all round.

Rise of the apes was one of the better films of 2011, no surprise.
Still no films from my list, but I have no problems with the first ten. I think basically MoFos have good taste.
Loved Apes. :yup: Not sure if I just forgot about it for consideration or if I decided to leave it as it was only based on one viewing at the time. Rodent will certainly be pleased.
I'll need to try American Splendor again one day. Watched it a couple of years back but bailed after about 45 minutes I think, just couldn't get into it.
So far just one from my list (Iron Man) but most of the films I really like/love so enjoying the list so far.

I reckon that if "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" had been released in 2001 it wouldn't have made the list.
It will be interesting to see if the entire list leans toward having more films from the last few years as opposed to films from 2000-2005.
I'm going to predict that 60% of all the films will come from 2006-2011. Could be totally wrong though.

100. The Bourne Identity
99. Iron Man
98. Hedwig and the Angry Inch
97. Black Dynamite
96. O Brother, Where Art Thou?
95. Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
94. Brotherhood of the Wolf
93. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
92. Rise of the Planet of the Apes
91. American Splendor

That makes six-and-one-quarter movies. I wonder if one of them could be construed as being one-fourth. Planet Terror and Death Proof count as more than 25% of Grindhouse, but maybe there are some others, and I'll give you those if you picked one of those and it makes it. Like you really care...

Ok, after 10 entries I'm having my two pence worth.
Good entries so far... I think there's only one or two I voted for... really can't remeber my list I gave to Brods.
Might have known Dragon Tattoo would be on the list... not a bad movie but it seems to get more praise than it's worth. Personally I can't see the bigh deal but that's just me. Still though, it's in the 90s so I'm glad it's not any higher tbh.
I'm surprised Bourne Identity isn't higher than 100th place, I was expecting to see it maybe in the 70s or 60s somewhere.
Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes should have definitely been higher though... mid 50s maybe.
Worst movie so far for me... Master and Commander. Really didn't like the film... took me three attempts to watch it, I kept turning it off after 30 minutes or so. Long tedious and, tbh, boring.
Eventually got round to seeing the whole thing and was left feeling drained and rather empty when the credits eventually rolled.
So there we go... looking forward to the next ten!

Along with including a paragraph or two for each film from someone got another idea we could have done but too late - a prediction competition. We could have predicated the first superhero film to appear, first animated film, first foreign film, first Oscar winner etc.
Actually just mentioning that, how many of the Best Picture winners do we think will make it? Assuming I've worked this out right there are 12 that were available to list.
Gladiator
A Beautiful Mind
Chicago
Lord of the Rings - Return of the King
Million Dollar Baby
Crash
The Departed
No Country for Old Men
Slumdog Millionaire
The Hurt Locker
The King's Speech
The Artist
I think Gladiator, Return of the King, Departed and No Country for Old Men will definitely make it. I think Beautiful Mind, Chicago, Million Dollar Baby, Crash and The King's Speech will miss out. Not sure about Slumdog, I know a lot of people dislike/hate it but it only needs a few people to love it. No clue about Hurt Locker, not sure of the general opinion for that round here. And not sure about The Artist.

I'd go along with this. And I think the following stats prove that out; the general consensus is they're all pretty well-thought of, quality films.
imdb rating / rottentomatoes average / rottentomatoes score / metacritic score
100. The Bourne Identity - 7.9 / 83% / 7 out of 10 / 68 out of 100
99. Iron Man - 7.9 / 94% / 7.6 out of 10 / 79 out of 100
98. Hedwig and the Angry Inch - 7.6 / 92% / 7.8 out of 10 / 85 out of 100
97. Black Dynamite - 7.3 / 85% / 7.2 out of 10 / 65 out of 100
96. O Brother, Where Art Thou? - 7.8 / 77% / 7.1 out of 10 / 69 out of 100
95. Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World - 7.4 / 85% / 7.6 out of 10 / 81 out of 100
94. Brotherhood of the Wolf - 7.0 / 72% / 6.3 out of 10 / 57 out of 100

Would have been nice (though probably a lot of work) if for each entry, the member that ranked the film the highest did a write up of it. Just to emphasise the community element of the thread and make it a bit more interesting for each film.
First of those categories seems hard, highest though might be bit easier, not too late for that

Sure, you guys can do that if you want. Though I'm kinda puzzled how that would work out without people actually knowing that particular film is coming up next.
Basically, I'd have to ask everyone to do a short write-up of their top 5. Or do I ask you guys right after I've posted the new entries? There'd be a day in between probably. Would also kinda ruin the effect, given that the entries will probably be bypassed by many replies...
If anyone has suggestions, I'd be open to them...

I got it Brods... whenever somebody's #1 film comes up in this thread... they could send you a quick write up on that film in a PM... you could copy and paste their write up to the post which contains their #1 film.
How many people have the same #1? It would simply be 2 or 3 additions to each post you make in here that shows who had it as their #1 and what they think of it...
... say, no more than x amount of words in the write up.

I'm open to writing something for my choices.
As for having people write about films that's why I felt the idea was too late. When Brodinski had worked the order out he could have contacted people before starting the list, asking them if they'd be interested in providing thoughts for say 5 films that were going to appear. Obviously it would spoil some of the surprises for each individual but not too much
I think I said it the original thread.

I'm not really up for telling people up front which films made the cut.
Proposition (Joe style, get it?):
I've looked over the lists and really, I think at least 95 % of all films that made the cut appear on someone's top 5. So whoever is up for it, can do write-ups of their top 5. Naturally, as we progress towards the top 20 and especially top 10, there are going to be more people who had those particular films in their top 5. In that case, several write-ups will be provided, which'd be great, because we're in the top 20 and it'll give everyone a chance to say just why they put the film up so high.
How does that sound?
Pyro Tramp
09-20-12, 05:30 PM
You basically told everyone that their top5s have made the cut and imagine the other 5% wouldn't be surprised. Giving posters/votee a heads up a couple of days before the post is posted with their films in i.e. when you post the latest- not a huge spoiler for them and think it would make the thread as a whole a lot more entertaining. A blow by blow list is interesting and all but reading about them from those who love them, well, i'd sacrifice a small surprise for that.

Don't quite understand your reasoning there. More than half of these films were released before 2006...
My reasoning is simply that films released in the second half of the Millenium so far are fresher in the mind and more likely to be voted for whereas older films from 2000-2005 are more likely to be overlooked.
Hence why I believe that Apes made the cut.
Looking back at my own list 17/25 come from 2000-2005 and only 8 films from 2006-2011.

I understand with movies from 10/11 but there can't be much difference in "freshness" between movies from 2000 or 2006. Besides, most will have been seen much later than their release date, either for the first time or as a rewatch.
