55. Adaptation 5
54. American Psycho 3.5
53. Juno 4

Some of these I haven't seen in years and all I really have is a memory of really liking it. I gave them 4's. Obviously, there's quite a bit I still need to watch... or finish watching as I've seen some of the movie, but not all of it. I italicized movies I watched some of to indicate that I gave them a try, at least.

Agreed. Not agreed in the sense that I don't like The Fountain, agreed in the sense that the voting structure lends itself a little to more polarizing films, since the people who like The Fountain tend to really like it.

I've seen Moon. It SUCKED.

This list is starting to get really bad. It was really good, but now

I heartily disagree! And yes, Source Code stars Jake Gyllenhaal, but still, even if somebody else played his role, I'd still think it was a better movie. I had Source Code at #20 on my list because for some G-DAMNED REASON a part of my psyche thinks Hedwig deserves the #2 spot instead. Source Code isn't gonna be on this list. It's the better movie. It doesn't end on the right note, though -- that's it's only big flaw. But it still ends the right way, story wise. Just isn't played right.

Ghost World...
Well, I am surprised myself that I picked Ghost World as my #1 movie on the list. Perhaps I was just trying to give it some much needed points. I seem to have succeeded. To think about why I put it at #1, I actually watched Ghost World again, TWICE, last month, in a row. I did not regret my decision after doing this.

I saw this movie when I was 18 or 19, which is basically the same age as the two lead female characters in this movie, Enid (Thora Birch) and Rebecca (Scarlett Johansson). I really related to this movie. At the time, I was involved - or had been involved - romantically - with this man who was twenty years older than me. In Ghost World, Enid attaches herself to this man - Seymour (played by Steve Buscemi) - who's probably around twenty years older than her, too. So, I totally lived an Enid-like existence right after high school, complete with the fascination with lonely, frustrated men holed up in some apartment somewhere. In other ways, I think Enid and I are a lot alike, too. She takes a simple art class to make up for a bad high school grade in the film -- it reminds me of the fact that I actually took a beginner's art class during my senior year of high school. She's fascinated with strange people - ordinary people - people nobody else notices. Again, so am I. I just don't dress like her or anything like that, but Enid and I are definitely from the same cloth. I actually did later on meet someone who reminded me a lot of Enid, both mentally and physically. Very cool woman whom I no longer know.

Ghost World is a movie about passion. It's about cherishing things when under the pressure of succumbing to more banal circumstances. Ghost World is right at the center of the ebb and flow of life. It is the hub of experience. The style is both obnoxiously ridiculous and droll and basic. I think it could even be explained as a sort of modern day, original blend of Alice in Wonderland. Thora Birch is Alice and she must grow up. She travels through a world of odd creatures -- her art teacher, played by Illeana Douglas (a goddess, I must say); Seymour; the shirtless muscular wacko at the convenience store; the guy waiting for the bus; the Weird Al waiter; the Satanists; the porno store full of creeps; the disabled girl giving the graduation speech; Maxine (Teri Garr); and others.

Alice, reborn as Enid, isn't prim and proper -- she's freaky and artistic. Seymour is the White Rabbit -- fussy, ready to take on appointments and dates, and moving along too fast. Enid follows him, stalks him, befriends him, and suddenly she's in for the long haul. After some odd little adventures, we are left with what appears to be a complete closure of this little Wonderland we've been witnessing as Enid becomes a symbol of mystery -- and instead of her waking up -- we do. Ghost World isn't a dream. God knows what it really is. It's not our own world and it's not a fantasy. But it's a wonderland. It could be a time warp -- as Enid, at one point in the film, states that she feels like she has stepped into one. Ghost World is a space odyssey and the voyage is all about, I think, love. As cheesy as that sounds, I think the movie is about love. Love in its most basic form. The absurdity of love. The struggle to love. The rules of love.

The movie is very deep and very powerful. It arrived on this planet at the perfect time and in the perfect form. If Jesus Christ was a movie, he would be Ghost World. That's why I made it my #1.

It's a testament to how good the rest of American Beauty is that it's still one of my favorite movies even though Thora Birch is in it. Ugh. I might've liked Ghost World were it not for her horrible wooden performance.

I thought Birch's performance was spot on: sarcastic, disillusioned, angsty teenager trying to find herself.

What were you expecting?

You know, I've been one of the biggest supporters of American Beauty around this place and it was at one time my favorite movie... but I've gotta say... I still like that movie, but Ghost World is better. Also, I sorta forgot that Thora Birch was also in American Beauty. She's quite an actress, that Thora Birch.

What made her performance "wooden"?

Skepsis93
11-11-12, 06:54 PM
It feels like she's acting to me. She's not the character, she's Thora Birch playing the character. I know it sounds dumb, but the more I see the character and less the actor, the better the performance is. She doesn't do that for me at all. I guess that's not the correct description of "wooden" but it's the best word I can think of to describe it.

It's difficult to explain why I didn't like it to someone who thinks it's great because you see the stuff that makes me dislike it in a completely different way.

Sexy Celebrity
11-11-12, 07:08 PM
I'm not really judgemental of how an actor acts. To me, it's just... should that actor have really played that role? Is there something about the actor that's really turning me off with this role? Are they making me like the movie?

Thora Birch is the best thing about Ghost World. I can't imagine anyone else playing that part and I would still like it as much. I know that's actually hard to say since I can't experience an alternate reality where somebody else did play Enid, but, she really did help the movie that much, in my opinion. And I think she's different in Ghost World than how she is in American Beauty.

Now, let's say, for example, Whoopi Goldberg, Honeykid's sex slave. That woman feels to me like Whoopi Goldberg no matter what she's in. That doesn't mean she's a bad actor, though... right?

Skepsis93

Maybe that's because you're seemingly so obsessed with Whoopi Goldberg as a person and that overpowers her characters. :p

Not necessarily a bad actor, but a bad performance. If I see the actor rather than the character, that says to me the performance isn't that good. I don't know if that's different for some people.

With my favorite actors, I always see the character they're playing rather than themselves no matter how many movies I see them in.

I think I can see what you mean about Thora Birch/Enid.

There is something about it that's kind of hard to buy. But, I would counter with that I think most of the characters in Ghost World are off-kilter and kind of unreal. Like I said in my write-up, Ghost World has something about it that's not of reality. It very much could take place in our world and it does, but there is also something fantastical about it. It was based on a comic book, after all.

Enid can seem pretty one note and that, I think, can give off the impression that she's just Thora acting. It's her eccentricities and her softness at times that expands her. For me, that softness about her is also what serves the movie, as I think the movie is about love. Love for the unloved is, I think, a theme for the film. Enid's "wooden" character as you say is something not everybody is going to love. I've shown this movie to people before and I've been stunned by their reactions of, "That is the most awful girl in the world. How could anybody be that way?" They thought it was a joke -- that the movie was simply about parading around Enid for our pleasure of laughing at her instead of actually trying to feel for her. She is not the most common of girls and yeah, it's a little tough to figure out what created her and how she came to be and why she's that way. But she fits with the movie. If anything, the whole movie plays like it's the perception she has of the world she has in her head. So, it could be that the film does take place in the real world, but through the filter of Enid's wacky psyche. Probably why I really like the film -- I, too, can have a wacky psyche.

Ghost World is then like Alice in Wonderland (I mentioned this in my write-up) but told through daydreams rather than being asleep. Perhaps things are being colored more bizarre than they really are. Perhaps Enid herself is shown as more bizarre and stereotypical and one dimensional than she really is.

Let's consider the ending --

The film ends mysteriously as Enid sees a bus - that's supposedly out of service - pick up an old man who's been waiting for the bus throughout the film. Next, we see Enid with bags packed and getting on that bus the next time it comes around. The bus drives away from her little town with Enid in tow. Then the movie just ENDS. Where is Enid is going? What happens to her? WHAT just happened?! There is no official answer given.

People have been speculating about what it means. Some think that it symbolizes the fact that Enid just gave up and committed suicide. Leaving town represents Enid dying. But there really hasn't been anything in the film before it to suggest that it's a suicide themed film, unless you think about how depressed certain characters, like Seymour, are, and then you think, well, she might as well just off herself because she's going to grow up and be the same.

We do know - it is said by her - that Enid wishes to someday leave town and go somewhere random and let people wonder what happened to her. The ending of Ghost World does show us that happening. At least, it suggests it.

But what if she didn't really go anywhere? What if we were again just seeing a fantasy of hers? What if that ending reveals that the movie is nothing but daydreams and fantasies? Now I'm not saying I'm right, but what if the bus - and even Norman - weren't real? Sometimes daydreamers and people who live in their heads will invent people who don't exist. The ending could have been nothing more than Enid, frustrated, ending her "movie" that we're watching with herself taking the bus and getting out of there -- just to do something.

One of the key themes of the movie is about trying to push people into taking some sort of action -- Enid finally, it appears, takes what could be serious action at the end. Though, who knows what happened? She could easily have returned home the very next day. In fact, the only real way to end Ghost World is to make YOU dream up the ending yourself! You write the ending. You finish Enid's character. You give her whatever kind of meaning and representation you want to give her. Thus, if you don't like Enid, you're still forced to deal with her. She collaborates with you -- she starts herself, you finish her. She takes action, you take action.

And another theme -- as Roberta, the art teacher, says to her students -- she wants them to use their art to "externalize the internal." This fits with the daydreaming thing -- Ghost World could very well be Enid's internal world brought out into the external world. The way you interpret the ending can be however you are internally -- those who see Enid committing suicide are probably just more prone to think that way. However you see the film and its ending are based on your own internal prejudices. The movie is about internal prejudices.

Oh, people will not care for this movie years on down the road. It'll be forgotten. That was a "Big Film Made With Talent So Let's Make It Trendy!" film. Oh, look -- a big film full of talent with a boring plot -- LET'S SAY IT'S THE BEST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD! It does not impress me. It does something for people collectively right now, but I am immune. I encourage everyone else to get immunization shots, too.

I don't hate The King's Speech but I find its high praise weird and interesting and I feel it's undeserved. What is it about The King's Speech that really struck a chord?

I'll tell you what it is -- because it's about an impotent man. It is a very male dominated movie with only Helena Bonham Carter strutting around as an adorable little nymph. It's about a man who can't find his voice and thus he is impotent in a way. Everyone wants to go see the impotent man and laugh at him. It's no different than rooting for Forrest Gump or Raymond Babbitt (Rain Man). If this movie was about Michelle Williams or even Meryl Streep as a woman who couldn't give a speech, it would be a big bomb -- nobody would want to see women with a disability like this, unless maybe it's a black woman (perhaps Gabourey Sidibe) because then she would be overcoming all the odds and her skin color would be a factor. And even then, the movie would still not win Best Picture. No, this movie made it big because it's about a weak, impotent, disabled man. That's all.

I just mean that they are all very similar and of the same type -- a white man with a disability movie. Instant Best Picture award. Forrest Gump, A Beautiful Mind, Rain Man, The King's Speech... anymore? Anytime you screw a white man up physically or psychologically in a movie, you're a major success, just as long as it's not something like AIDS, as with Philadelphia.

I'm not sure it's exactly that we're laughing at them, either, but I think there's a certain element of... not exactly schadenfreude, but catharsis through other people's misery, perhaps. It's maybe the flip side of the other type of character that's favoured by acting awards, the transgressive monster (as Sexy was saying about Bateman in American Psycho).

The problem with the prevalence of the 'white man with a disability movie' is that it is difference without difference, the typical 'straight white able-bodied American man' playing at something other and getting patted on the back for it.

I think Sexy's right that there probably wouldn't be any awards for a film about a woman with a stutter. And there's something a little problematic in actors getting Oscars for playing gay or disabled when at the same time the opportunities for disabled or openly gay actors in the industry are much more limited.

(Although I do concede there have at least been more awards for black actors in recent years.)

That's a very sweeping statement to say that's the reason people liked the film. I like you SC and usually I agree with a lot of what you say, but I think you are way, way off here.

Personally the reason I enjoyed the film was because it was a beautifully acted and beautifully told film. Firth is tremendous, as is Rush. If anything Rush has been slightly overlooked because of the shadow Firth's performance cast. It's also a fascinating story that provides a unique story connected with the war. A man who needs to lead a nation through his speeches is unable to talk. As a story it would be a cheesy, ironic fable if it were fiction but the fact it's true is amazing.

And I certainly don't know anyone who saw the film with the intention to laugh at him. It's certainly a very funny film at points but the humour arises from the situation and from the interaction between Firth and Rush's characters. When I went to see the film there were dozens and dozens of elderly people there. They certainly weren't there to laugh. They were there to relive a turbulent time in their lives (well at least some of them were there as I heard them talking about it) and see it presented in a classy, respectful manner that I find really quite beautiful.

And the same is absolutely true of Rain Man. It's not a movie with the intetion of having you laugh at Raymond Babbit. It's not even really a movie about Raymond. He certainly can't overcome any odds. He doesn't have something that can be fixed or overcome, he has autism. He's exactly the same at the end of the film as he was at the start. The film is about the people who have someone like Raymond in their life and how they deal with it. It's about the change in Charlie's life that is brought about by meeting his autistic brother. It's really a film about Charlie.

Oh and as for your comment about the men not being that attractive as a reason for not liking the film.

I just hope Let Me In isn't higher. I would be thoroughly disappointed in you guys.

Let me in wasn't half bad, it's not gonna make the list, but I
Can't say it was much worse than Let The Right one in. (which I'll be rewatching soon)

I really liked The King's Speech it was charming and sweet. I wasn't blown away by it, but it's one of those movies I would watch if I were feeling a bit blue.

Let the Right One In is another I sort of regret leaving off my list. Stupid cat scene aside it's miles better than Let Me In largely in part to the two phenomenal leads.

Yeah I'm struggling to see any documentaries making it now as well. There were a few contenders which could have made it - Man on Wire, Bowling for Columbine, Murderball etc. Like you I had one on my list.

Here's another question I'll throw out there. Is Avatar going to make it?

In most places it would be a dead cert but I'm not so sure about this board. I really thought it would have managed to sneak onto the list, but I'm struggling to see it now we're so deep into the list

donniedarko

It sneaked right to the bottom of my list, if it's not in the next set I highly doubt it.

As far as documentaries I'm positive the one from my list won't make it (from the strt I accepted that), but I'm hoping for there to be one, looking like a slim wish though

I'll tell you what it is -- because it's about an impotent man. It is a very male dominated movie. It's about a man who can't find his voice and thus he is impotent in a way. Everyone wants to go see the impotent man and laugh at him. It's no different than rooting for Forrest Gump or Raymond Babbitt (Rain Man).

Well i suppose Farenheit 911 has an outside chance with Dubyas borderline Down Syndrome appealing to some as SC has outlined.

Wonder Boys has the following ingredients:

Tobey Maguire and Robert Downey Jr.
A drag queen
Robert Downey Jr. PICKING UP the drag queen on an airplane (or was it just the airport?)
Robert Downey Jr. being bisexual and CUDDLING UP against Tobey Maguire in bed.
A story about writers.
Pittsburgh.
A Marilyn Monroe jacket.
A woman named Oola.
Did I already mention the drag queen and Robert Downey Jr. hitting on Tobey Maguire? Oh, yes, I did.
Richard Thomas.
Richard Thomas being the victim of adultery. Cuckoldery.
Marijuana.
Tobey Maguire being an expert on celebrity suicides.
Did I mention the drag queen and Robert Downey Jr.'s bisexuality and attraction to Tobey Maguire?
The film also features an incredible scene where the drag queen changes back into a man during the duration of a car ride.

Negatives:

Katie Holmes
Michael Douglas looks terrible and I find his character kind of irritating.

I have been a member of this forum for ten years. I have over 6,000 positive rep points and 50+ friends. I have a history of being silly and wild and opinionated. What is wrong here if what I'm doing is now being considered "trolling"?

Fair enough, man. But I've been a member here for a long time too. I get that you're a silly dude or whatever. We all get that. But it seemed like you were starting to post provocative stuff for the sake of being provocative. Obviously, some others were put off by it too. Honestly, I just chalked it up to you being bored and/or whiney that more of your favorites aren't making this list, and we all know you like attention. For the record, I never called you a troll. I just said you were acting like one.

Now, if you'll excuse me...

Solaris? I haven't seen it but haven't heard anything but hate about the remake on this site

And we're just being nice. It's garbage. Whoever voted for it had it at #1 to get it this high

Solaris is a shocker.

I haven't seen Solaris and I am yet to see a single person that has liked it, didn't realise we had members around here that liked it so much to be honest.

If solaris came in in the first ten I could understand, but top 50?

I've not seen Solaris and had no idea it was so popular.

Well, whoever voted for it needs to let us know:p

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j38/iusreview/solaris.jpg

It was me. And maybe only me, but I imagine someone else must have had it on their list for it to land here. I had it at #8 on my list. I know Sedai likes it a lot, too.

I wrote about it back in 2010 here (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?p=618676) because it really is a movie I can watch over and over again, usually at night. It's a pretty unconventional film, I'll give everyone that. It's slower than most, it meanders, and it's not the most concrete storyline you'll ever experience. But I'm a big fan of Steven Soderbergh and Stanislaw Lem's original novel, and I think Solaris is a perfect marriage of the former's vision and the latter's narrative spirit. (As it happens, I'm not a fan of Tarkovskiy's 1972 film. I can appreciate the vision, but talk about a meandering film with lots of long shots and extraneous crap thrown in for artistic effect...)

One the biggest things plaguing Solaris at the time it was released was how it was marketed. Consider this trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_pTtju_MPY) and this trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4sJA-E51bQ), neither of which accurately represent what the film really is. It's not a romance-turned-thriller and it's not a sci-fi actioner.

It's dreamlike, contemplative, psychological. It's content in depicting space as quiet, even peaceful... something very few sci-fi films do. The source of conflict is always internal. It's not a deadly xenomorph hunting down the crew, or a rogue mercenary group hellbent on destruction, or even the death of a star threatening humanity. It's the characters real, personal, painful emotions working against them. I find it pleasantly ironic that the planet itself is strikingly alien... but the conflict it conjures for everyone is so very familiar. That's the point, I think: that even if you could travel far away from loss, you can never travel quite far enough. And in the end, do you really want to?

The plot doesn't make perfect sense, admittedly, but I'm a sucker for this stuff. The smooth and steady style (definitely a contemporary reflection of 2001: A Space Odyssey) and Cliff Martinez' beautifully hypnotic score get your heart rate slowed down and your mind into a very internal place, which is where you need to be to enjoy this film. Don't watch Solaris in the middle of the day, in July, with the sun shining through your window and your kids playing outside. Watch this film at night, in December, with the lights off and a hot cider in your hand. Make sure you're a little sleepy. Let your mind wander; don't let it be such a laser beam of scrutiny. Do that, and you might just experience what I truly think Soderbergh was going for.

I'm surprised, too. I like it fine. It's a good movie. And I'm not surprised it's on the list in general, even, but yeah, very surprised it cracked the top 50.

I've nothing against it either. Just very surprised.

So nobody's owning up to voting for Solaris, then?

I don't recall voting for it, but I rate it 4.

Great, great stuff. I have seen it probably 10 times or so. I like the melancholy vibe and stark production.

I like being provocative and I'll look for provocative things to say sometimes, yes. But if I am that way, then I'm that way because I feel I've got a point that I believe in and I think it should be said. That was the case with The King's Speech. I don't have a problem with that movie -- I liked it -- but I do think it's overrated and I do think there's something fishy about why it became so beloved and won Best Picture. I just saw something I felt existed. I knew it would probably be taken as wrong, but I felt it was fine to mention it anyway. What if other people agreed? Maybe I would learn more and better shape this idea of mine. I take risks. That's what I try to do around here.

Maybe in some regards I do act trollish. Check out Honeykid's profile comments pages, for example, and you'll see how I've Whoopi Goldberg Trolled that thing all to Hell. But I wasn't trying to be that way here. Only time I feel I really stepped over the line was when I got a little too Marlee Matlin crazy, but that I actually blame on a beer I was having - which, by the way, I don't drink often.

I didn't do anything because I was bored and feeling whiny about my favorites not making this list. Hell, I think nine movies on this list were on my own list of 25. I don't even know if anyone else has had that many. I'm on a roll. If there's a contest, I'm winning, although wintertriangles would disagree.

I like attention, but really, who doesn't? Well, okay, not everybody does, but many do. I don't think I'm asking for a lot more than other people. I certainly don't barge in and take over threads I'm not interested in just for attention, like the new thread about Hamas or the MoFo Football game thread, etc.

Hope this ends our feud. Let me give you a Nebbit kiss.

Well, not to gloat or fan the flames any more, but... 12 movies from my list have made it so far. ;)

Lol, feud ended. Was it even a feud? We didn't shoot at each other. Maybe it was a spat. Except we didn't spit either. I'm gonna go with kerfuffle: (n) "a misunderstanding leading to accusations and defensiveness." Yeah.

Solaris remake is just garbage. A butchering of Tarkovsky's masterpiece.

Negative. It's a brilliant reinterpretation of the original's ideas, doesn't try to recreate the older film shot for shot (always a mistake with remakes, IMO), has a magnificent score, is well acted, shot beautifully, directed with a sure hand and leaves the viewer with a ton to think about at the end of the film. A fantastic cerebral science fiction film.

This. You're right about the shocker thing; we're getting to the point where, every time a surprising movie shows up, the most surprising part is going to be the movie it must have supplanted. We're gonna have some cray-zay omissions when this is all said and done, I think. But maybe most'll still get crammed in there.

Still waiting for some of my other huge ones to show up so I can write a bit about them.

Any guesses on what's going to take the cake?

Godoggo
11-21-12, 01:56 PM
My guesses for number one and two: Mulholland Dr. and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I actually hope I am really wrong, but I have a feeling those two movies got a lot of votes with fairly high placings.

What would be a great surprise upset would be for Up to take the whole thing.

I'd be pretty giddy, but I'd be happy with anything in the top 10-15, really. That'll definitely be one I'll be writing a little about when it comes up. I've actually got a huh-ooge, multimedia essay on that 99% done and ready to go up in the Essays area before too long, but it'll probably wait for some of the big changes going on behind the scenes first...

3.The Departed
2. Mulholland Drive

Yeah, selfishly, I'm hoping Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is way up there, if not first. I do think a lot of people probably had it ranked high on their lists. I also think No Country for Old Men and LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring are going to be way up there.

Yoda

Gotta imagine LOTR's gonna be hurt by the split vote. Gotta be a few ROTKs on there diluting it, no? It was probably the best of the three.

Seems reasonable, except I reckon The Departed will be high, just not that high. Lots of different voters this time around.

Naturally I would love ESotSM to take top spot, but I have a feeling Mulholland Dr. will just pip it. No big deal. I really love the majority of that Top 10.

It's close. I think I prefer it slightly. But it admittedly depends on my mood, and I'd probably agree with most of the arguments you'd make the other way. Doesn't mean I wouldn't mind hearing 'em, though! :) Might be a fun exercise, especially since I'm guessing we both love both of 'em.
