Absolutely one of the greatest films of not just this century, but also the preceding one.
Lost in Translation could be defined as a rom-com, albeit a very sober one. The deep relationship between Bob and Charlotte is so beautiful and moving to watch that by the end of the film, you feel genuinely sorry to say goodbye to these characters. But how does Sofia Coppola pull this off? Well, she spends a good amount of time showing the main characters’ lives when they’re all by themselves. We see a lonely Charlotte staring out of her hotel window or lying on her bed, mostly in a foetus position, as if she’s trying to protect herself from something. Whenever she meets up with her friends, we see her nearly going insane from the banality of their conversations. In essence, Charlotte is alone, albeit mentally rather than physically. The same goes for Bob. Almost psychotic from jetlag, he is overwhelmed by the friendliness of all the Asians surrounding him. But there is not a single person he can really talk to or remotely relate to.
Tokyo does not seem like a very inviting city in Lost in Translation. The Japanese metropolis resembles a giant amusement park, where technology has erased all sense of humanity. Early scenes in the movie show Bob getting beeped awake by his fax machine and struggling to make use of his shower and exercise machine. These are scenes that are quite funny, but at the same time sad.
When the two finally meet, you instantly feel (like Bob and Charlotte probably do too) as if two kindred spirits have found each other. It’s clear that the twosome is uncertain about the lives they are leading, but now, they’ve finally met someone they can relate to. We can feel the strong intensity of their relationship, but Lost in Translation never waters down to being a cheesy romance, which is a testament to Sofia Coppola’s skill set.
Murray portrays Bob as a modest person who reacts in an unemotional manner to the often eccentric behaviour of the Japanese surrounding him. Murray really shows that Bob is a man who doesn't understand the Asian culture and language. At the same time, he manages to be very funny, but in a subtle and subdued way, because of the looks on his face and the pronunciation of certain words. It really is a career best performance for the former Saturday Night Live comedian. Scarlett Jo was only 19 years old when she starred in Lost in Translation and she also turned in her best performance to this day. It is a shame that she is nowadays pissing away her talent in lesser films.
I will not reveal the specifics of the goodbye between Bob and Charlotte, but I have to say that it is one of the most moving and sincere scenes I have ever seen in a film. It’s just a magical moment to top off a special and memorable gem of a film.

Anyway, I like it okay. A nice, pretty film. I don't think the veneer of sadness and somberness is hiding something of tremendous depth, though. I think what power it has comes from each viewer's ability to channel the feelings it invokes, and not from the film itself, if you follow the distinction. Some would say that's just as good, but, well...I guess I'm not one of those people. :) But I'm not up in arms about it, either.

Overrated.
Doesn't really deserve the #7 spot.
It's better and yet not better than Inglorious Basterds.
At least it doesn't have this:http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lymjkw0dlX1r1grclo1_400.gif
You people probably only really like it because it doesn't take place in America. Thus it has that semi-foreign film feel.
Ho-hum. The best I can say is it's ok; shallow, but ok, like all of Sofia's movies.

I'm not surprised with this at #7, what I am surprised with is how LOTR:ROTK, Lost in Translation, The Departed, and Up among others are still higher than There will be Blood, which boggles my brain.
Two in a row that are extremely over-rated in my eyes. I think Lost In Translation is a decent film but I didn't see the special movie that so many seemed to see in it. Not seen it for years and years though so maybe I'd feel different these days.
Funny but so far I loved the no.91-100 films a lot more than what has appeared in the top 10.

Yea! I was really worried about Lost in Translation making it. So glad it got this high. In all Sofia Coppola's movies, but especially this one, I become really attached and connected to the characters. I become completely invested in them. I think about them long after the movie is over. I feel the need to revisit them over and over. They become very real to me.
Sofia really gets loneliness and disconnect in a way that really speaks to me. It makes the friendship between Charlotte and Bob so special. No matter how many times I watch the final scene between the two of them, it never fails to make as much of an emotional impact as it did the first time.

Isn't the final scene of that movie the two of them staring at each other in an elevator (or, he's in the elevator and she's outside of it) without speaking to each other (there are other people surrounding them)? By staring at each other, they are non-verbally communicating "goodbye"? That is, at least, how I remember the film ending -- and it's been almost a decade since I saw it.
I'll say:
1) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
2) Mulholland Dr.
3) There Will Be Blood

Well I did just watch Lost In Translation like five minutes ago and I find myself very neutral to it. I'd give it a 3- and that might be a bit nice. I mean I didn't have any huge emotions involved, and I didn't feel anything other than "wow this place is beautiful". The characters I found them both, kind of boring.

I find it hard to believe that people feel such enormous emotion for Bill Murray. I mean, I like Bill Murray, but people really feel like he's so incredibly lonely in that movie? Bill Murray seems to me like a man who'd be just fine if Armageddon took place and he was the last man alive on the planet!

Catch-up:
Amelie is not one of my favourite movies. It's not a bad movie, but I find it annoying rather than endearing in its quirkiness. I'm not going to say it doesn't deserve its place on the list, though, I know how I feel about Amelie is how other people feel about Lost in Translation, which I love.
Inglourious Basterds - I sympathise with the people who think this is an overrated, overblown mess of a film and those who are outraged by this description. It's not boring, I'll give it that, at least. There are moments of genius in there, incredibly tense, beautifully shot sequences. But overall it's bloated and uneven where Tarantino has chucked in everything he can thing of. Like film soup.
Lost in Translation -- I adore this film, I think it's absolutely wonderful. It's gorgeous to look at, perfectly captures the feeling of disconnect and isolation and burgeoning friendship, with one of the best soundtracks around. I had this one at #2 on my millennium list, and it would probably crack the top 5 in my all-time favourites.

I just watched it, and I couldn't disagree with you more on the characters. I connected, because you can sense the struggle and deep meaning that these two are trying to find. There are times where you catch them wondering just what the hell has brought them here and why and how did the two of them meet. But the thing is, they connect to each other. I feel like the friendship between the two of them means more than anything on a romantic connection, and that is what the two of them will remember forever more than anything. They both know that life is an uphill battle and they both are trying to realize that they just need to live in the moment.
It's not often that I would say this, but again, this is another film that probably makes it unto my top 25 had I seen it prior to us all voting. Such a brilliant film with brilliant acting. And like Donnie said, the scenery just adds to it for me. Consider it a top 100 shoe-in at the moment, with the possibility of a whole lot more than that. MOFO got this one right.

[i]I think what power it has comes from each viewer's ability to channel the feelings it invokes, and not from the film itself, if you follow the distinction. Some would say that's just as good, but, well...I guess I'm not one of those people. :)
I am.
There isn't a film from this millennium that inspires in me the range and depth of feelings that this one does, but one not very representative one is envy. I saw this film not long after completing a masters in writing and immediately recognised it as something I and several others on the course had been trying to achieve but could not even quite envision. Lost in Translation that invites and allows people to read into the characters, with its deepest emotions and meanings and connections subtly implied. It's a simple, pure, polished mirror of a film. It's possible that how much you see depends from the angle from which you view it. But the power it has, the ability to connect, the soul, is as far from an accident as you can get. It's perfect craft. It's massively difficult to get right; I can't think of another recent film that comes close- in fact I think you can't really come close with a film like this, you either manage it or, like all Sofia Coppola's other films, you don't. And even if you get it pitch perfect, it won't work for everyone. But when it is accomplished, it can leave even other good films looking plain, shallow, cliched, unpleasantly demanding.
I think even those who don't love the film would admit it is beautiful to look at, has strong performances, a great soundtrack, excellent atmosphere. In addition to that gorgeous shell, I feel it has immense soul and impact. It was well clear not only of the other 8 from my list that made the 100 but every film on my list. I hope to see a film this good again.
This is absurdly gushing but I love this film to bits.

This was the undisputed # 1 on my list, so I'll offer some words of wisdom:
Cidade de Deus, City of God, is a slum on the outskirts of Rio De Janeiro, where society’s poorest are packed together since the sixties. There, we meet a kid that goes by the name of Rocket. He is a daily witness to the drug trade and the violence that goes hand (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=23744&highlight=year&page=2#) in hand with it. Just about everyone, including his own brother, is part of a gang. Children (no older than 8 or 9 years old) wander the streets, gun in hand, looking for innocent bystanders to terrorize and rob in order to fund their drug addictions.
Although Rocket does socialize with people involved in the drug trade (it’s almost impossible not to), he chooses to remain on the fringes of criminality, preferring to pursue his dream of becoming a professional photographer while also trying to get intimate with his dream girl Angelica.
It is clear that Rocket is the exception rather than the rule in the City of God. Gang leaders are almost arbitrarily slain and subsequently replaced by even worse maniacs with a craving for power and money. Becoming a druglord is in fact many young boys’ dream. The prime example in City of God is Li’l Zé, a bloodthirsty sociopath who spent his entire childhood idolizing the local gang leaders. He teamed up with his best friend, the mostly calm and collected Benny, to take over the drug trade in the City of God, killing everyone who stands in his way.
The story however is not limited to the main characters, Rocket and L’il Zé. Meirelles has ensured that the Cidade de Deus favela is absolutely gushing with life. Minor characters are given plenty of background that allows us to relate to them. The bus driver, named Knockout Ned (what’s in a name), is a karate expert who will swiftly give anyone who tries to rob him an asswhoopin’. The local bar owner is a snitch for the police, but has a meltdown when he catches his wife with another man. Carrot, a competing drug dealer that Li’l Zé fights a bloody war with, is depicted as a man who rose to the criminal top ranks thanks to his perseverance and loyalty to his former bosses. All these sub-stories are good enough to make you believe that Cidade de Deus could really be a favela on the outskirts of Rio.
This is also a testament to Meirelles’ directorial skills. In a film that is well over 2 hours long, he manages to tell an incredibly compelling story without there being one scene too many in City of God. Every single scene contributes to the themes of the film, every minute reinforces the film’s points of view without getting repetitive. Meirelles has clearly paid close attention to great American directors, such as Scorsese and Tarantino (that voice-over is reminiscent of Goodfellas and Casino). The technically outstanding opening scene sets the tone for the entire film. A handheld camera spins around the characters like a madman, continuously breathing down their neck so that our contact with them remains maximal. As a result, the film has quite a realistic feel to it. Furthermore, Meirelles is a very visceral filmmaker, employing many slick tricks in City of God such as freeze-frame, split-screen, flashback, flash forward,…
But what is perhaps even more astounding is that the film is so colourful and stylish while at the same time maintaining a very raw feel to it. Men and children are killed without hesitation. Killing a man seems as easy and natural as preparing a microwave meal. It is clear that for many in Cidade de Deus, crime and brutal violence have become a standard in life. We, being the viewers, get a panoramic view on a world where the police can be bribed and where the media does not care about the body count. Everyone appears to be consumed by this culture of drugs and violence, down to even the smallest children. At one point in the film, a child (and I don’t mean teenager, I mean a child no older than 8 or 9 years of age) says: “I’m not a kid. I smoke, I snort. I am an adult.” There are more such scenes in the film that are extremely powerful, not because of the violence that is being depicted, but because of what they suggest. Cautiously brought on undertones of tenderness and love (Rocket’s love for Angelica) form a nice counter pole for the many atrocities in City of God, but these are largely swept away by the waves of the ocean of blind hatred and rage that runs through Cidade de Deus. After all, how can the love of few beat the hatred of so many?
City of God is not a very cheerful film. At the end of it, you will not start laughing with joy. The film does not offer any answers to the problems brought up along its 2 hour + runtime. Much as is the case in Goodfellas, we get a view on the life of criminals and the consequences such a lifestyle brings with it. City of God is an unforgiving, rock hard headbutt of a film that will shake you to the very core of your being.

City of God is an amazing film, and the best of 2002 that I can think of. Here's the review I put in Movie Tab II when I saw it.
City of God (Directed by Meirelles) follows a young boy (Rocket) in the slums, it's one of those stories that starts from the end and starts telling the story from the beginning. While I can't find anything significantly unique this is amongst the top 5 most entertaining and realistic I've seen. I've rarely felt something so real that I stopped analyzing and I just felt like I was documenting it. This virtually never happens when the movies being narrated by the protagonist, but it worked here.
The greatest scene was the night club which was a treat to the eyes and ears alike. Absolutely electrifying! The film was never boring even when thinks were getting "good" I was into it. It showed that life in the slums is like King of the Hill, and when someone has been getting to old (which means early twenties in The City of God) they shall be replaced. It's the circle of death and power. Phenomenal film

Thank you! :p
City of God is just a movie: it is fiction. Nothing that happens in the movie has significant relationship with Brazilian reality. Only 5% of the population of Brazil lives in favelas, such as the one depicted in the movie. While the standards of living in Brazil are certainly lower than in Europe and the US the movie certainly do not represent the average but actually shows a very distorted and exaggerated picture of violence among the poorest 5% of the country. Life expectancy inside the favelas is around 67-68 years, but from watching the movie it appears to be around 25.
Some Brazilians do not like the way that we are promoting yourselves making movies like these to the rest of the world.
I could say based on my favorite German movies from the decade:
"I am glad I wasn't born in Germany because in some movies the country looks like this:

TylerDurden99

I found There Will Be Blood extremely cold, emotionally, which might be the point, but it doesn't stand against the epic Magnolia. Magnolia is an emotional juggernaut, impeccably written and acted. The characters are shown with all their flaws out in the open, some more morally despicable than others. But whether it be Tom Cruise's repulsive self help guru Frank, or Philip Baker Hall's supposed pedophile Jimmy, or Melora Waters' drug snorting, mentally damaged Claudia, Paul Thomas Anderson packs so much into the writing that they become three dimensional characters we can forgive and care about. It's even more amazing that he is able to mount a three hour buildup that still manages to have a more than satisfying conclusion, which I find a very impressive achievement and more than enough evidence that he is a skilled writer-director.

It's funny how people find "distant" films to be emotionless when it could just as easily mean they're so emotionally turbulent that you just don't have a label for it.

Thank you!
"I am glad I wasn't born in Germany because in some movies the country looks like this:
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_WkKZJVG5wTk/SRZYKMhqFUI/AAAAAAABkLE/AtuUsPKcFWQ/s400/Der_Untergang_Downfall-7.jpg
and there are spies listening to everything I could say."
Hi I meant no offense like. Jenson Button, a British Formula 1 driver was nearly kidnapped in Brazil in 2011 (I think) and I read recently that violence against Police Officers in Brazil is up something like 60% in the last couple of years. So all I'm really saying is that it must be a slight worry, security wise holding the 2 biggest sporting events on the planet in the next few years.
The Germany analagy is a little off given that WW2 Germany was almost 70 years ago whereas City of God is a little more recent history.

I actually thought this would be second or first. It's a great film I love it like pretty much any Lynch film I've seen. I had it at number 13 on my list. It will be the eleventh and the last. Well now I'm pretty sure that Eternal Sunhine would top this baby, even though it's not THAT good.

Another brilliant film and no surprise to see it at #4, looking forward to seeing the next couple of posts now, hope Eternal Sunshine doesn't get number one, like donniedarko says it's not that good - a very good film yes but not worthy of winning the list.

Mulholland Drive isn't my cup of tea. Love Naomi Watts though. But Lynch just makes overall peculiar films in my opinion. Perhaps after 300 re-watches I could attempt to understand what he was going for here. The only thing it has going for it (other than Watts herself) is the fact it keeps you thinking the whole time.

Mystic River - if it's not a Western, i'm a bit meh on Eastwood directing but that's me
Hangover - far more intelligent and funny films that didn't make it, Borat, Anchorman, Team America were all funnier
Little Miss Sunshine - good but there's better quirky indie comedies, not sure any would be best of decade though

Well, at least you got your favorite up there in 4th. Personal preferences generally don't align that much with the popular averages. By my subjective judgment Mulholland Dr. is great (in my top 10) but not as remotely as great as Spirited Away (top 1), which is not a mind bending film but a real work of art that touches the soul, and that one was around 25th place in this list (though it is also a quite different "thing" from the conventional definition of films, which include Mulholland Dr., which is a mind bending but still rather traditional hollywoodish flick).

Haven't seen Spirited Away, I should probably get on that :(
I think part of the reason why Mulholland Drive far surpasses a film like, say, Lost Highway is that it goes behind just being a mind-bender; it's a very heartbreaking and emotional film. Though I don't know how you can say that it's traditional at all :p

Phew. I was starting to worry this had blown past everything. I'll never understand the love for this movie. Ledger is pretty good, and it's entertaining, but the tonal confusion just really puts me off. Every time I see Christian Bale in his Halloween costume and using that voice I just want to laugh. And I KNOW that's not what Christopher "Misplaced Seriousness" Nolan intended. #3 is ridiculously high, but at least that leaves two movies I adore at #1 and 2.

Well yeah, of course there are, including an incredibly superior one 54 places below it; TDK is one element away from being a rather average movie, only a little more interesting than the films that preceded and followed it.
But as one or two people have noticed, Heath Ledger is good in this movie. In fact he is everything good in this movie, animating the film with his electric, unpredictable presence. I give the writers credit for giving him something to work with, and he rewarded with something on the opposite end of the quality scale from the blandly ridiculous villain in the first movie and the laughably ridiculous villain from the third.

I like The Dark Knight well enough, although for me the highlight of the series is The Dark Knight Rises, and it would be interesting to see where that would have placed, had this list been done a bit later. I only watched TDKR recently when it came out on dvd, but my initial thought was: if there's a cult of Nolan, sign me up. TDKR struck me as being more evenly paced whereas TDK goes out of it's way at times to be dark and clobber you over the head with its shocks and set pieces. Plus TDKR has Marion Cotillard. Altogether it's a really good trilogy and they're easily the best comic book or superhero films out there.
Gabrielle947

Yes, TDKR.
Well yeah, of course there are, including an incredibly superior one 54 places below it;
well, yes,I forgot that there are some people who prefer Batman Begins or TDKR,but then, isn't this Nolan Batman franchise definitely one the best superhero franchises ever?I personally love it but even objectively looking it's a masterpiece. It amazes me how it manages to balance plot, characters, special effects and other small details and this makes those Batman movies just flow.
Also Nolan's trilogy presented something like a new look into superhero film genre,it's not banal as it used to be.Superhero isn't only the good guy doing good things and the villain's actions actually has some meaning now.Spider-Man 2 also dug deeper into the superhero (Spiderman in this case) but it didn't do as well as TDK.The plot is quite unpredictable(unlike older superhero films, where you enjoy it but you are just waiting when the superhero will succeed)and the acting is superb. And I really strongly think that this franchise will be a classic.

I though The Incredibles was very good, about equal to Batman: Dark Knight, but both pale in comparison to Watchmen:

Which rates as the most powerful superhero flick I ever watched. Overall, The Dark Knight it about equal to Spider Man 2 and Iron Man in terms of quality, though it is a bit more dramatic but I though it was a bit stupid, trying to be smart but failing*.
*I think that's a general problem with Nola's films: they look at you saying: "how super smart and cool is that!", and overall provide a rather weak film going experience for me. Though I understand why he is "the greatest director ever" according to the IMDB ratings with his "look how cool/smart I am" films.
Take for instances: Inception: "look how cool/smart: a dream within a dream within a dream, that's uber cool bro!", The Dark Knight: "look how serious I am, and this is a superhero movie!", Memento: "look, it is a film that has inverse chronology, how cool/smart is that bro !?", The Prestige: "he made several copies of himself just to do a magic show, while the other magician had a twin brother and never revealed it! how cool/smart is that bro!?".

Yeah, that's almost 10 million. That's just a million under my country's entire population.
That type of comparison is invalid. :p
The point is that if you are born in Brazil the probability that you will be born in a favela is 5%. Also, I have already explained that City of God wildly exaggerates the degree of violence existing inside the favelas.

Overall, my ratings for superhero films I remember having watched over the past few years:
Watchmen 4_5
The Incredibles 4
The Dark Knight 4
Unbreakable 4
Spider Man 3_5
Spider Man 2 4
Spider Man 3 2
Iron Man 4
Iron Man 2 3
X-Men 3
X-Men 3 2_5
X-Men First Class 3_5
X-Men Origins: Wolverine 3
Hulk 2_5
The Incredible Hulk 3
Captain America 3
Thor 3
Fantastic Four 2
Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer 1_5
Superman Returns 2_5
The Avengers 3_5
The Dark Knight Rises 3_5
Batman Begins 3_5
Batman (Tim Burton) 3_5
Batman Returns (Tim Burton) 3
Overall, the worst superhero film I ever watched (I never watched the Batman movies of the mid and late 1990's) was this one:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/e/e6/Fantastic_Four_2_Poster.jpg/220px-Fantastic_Four_2_Poster.jpg
And the only one who attained a certain degree of greatness was Watchmen, all the others tried but failed (The Dark Knight) or didn't try (all the others).
Disappointed that it scored such a high spot on the list. Despite the fact that I love superhero flicks, and Batman as a character, Dark Knight left me completely cold. I just found it unrelentingly bleak and depressing, and I'm in the camp of people who prefer Batman Begins; a film I found to have a better balance between the dark, gothic sensibility of Batman whilst still maintaining a sense of fun and escapism. And also Bale's voice seemed even more ridiculous in TDK! :D
To be fair I have only seen it the once, and it's definitely due another shot someday

The little computer in my head that processed and correctly picked 3, 4, 5 and 6, thinks that more than likely, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind will be #1, since the little computer was also affected by the idea of, "What if Eternal ends up being #2? Pick Fellowship of the Rings since you prefer it and because it might win anyway."
If Fellowship is #1, Eternal Sunshine won't be far behind it in points. It might even be a shocking one or two point difference. Or, maybe not.
My heart wants Fellowship to be #1. My mind is thinking... "eek." But it might just be getting sabotaged by Yoda, who incorrectly picked 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.

I though The Incredibles was very good, about equal to Batman: Dark Knight, but both pale in comparison to Watchmen:
Besides the Rorschach parts, I thought that Watchmen was surprisingly awful.
Every time I watch TDK my opinion goes down of it a little, but I still like it well enough. Ledger is the only exceptional thing about it for me though. There are other super hero movies I like a lot better.

I didn't find Watchmen as entertaining as The Dark Knight, but the overall effect in the end of the movie was far more powerful. It was great as a whole but not great on its parts. Your description why you didn't like the movie appear to hold on the individual parts but my liking was on the effect of the whole upon me.

Yes and no. The ultra violence detracted from one of the key themes but I also thought he improved on GN by replaces Dr Manhattan with the manufactured alien thing; to the point it made so much sense it's a shock Moore never thought of it.
TheUsualSuspect
01-17-13, 04:29 AM
EXCEPT......
In the graphic novel they clearly state that "God exists and he's American. Regardless of how rogue people are suppose to think the alienated Dr. Manhattan is suppose to be, he clearly represents a certain nation....he fought in the Vietnam war for crying out loud.
The alien was from another world....something that could unite the nations against a common enemy. Despite Dr. Manhattan hitting American cities, the world can always turn around and say that Americans are responsible for what they created. Moore's original idea works for me, Snyder's revamp does not.
Other than that, I found the film to be faithful....as faithful as you'll ever get.
TylerDurden99
01-17-13, 07:24 AM
I just don't think Watchmen should've ever been adapted into a film. A mini-series might've worked, but I'd have preferred they had left it as it is. Watchmen is a huge, sprwaling twelve issue series, with so much political and social commentary either subtly or plainly on display. The film is faithful to the main plot... but it unfortunately misses out on the real meat of the source, like Hollis' biography, the Tales Of The Black Freighter, the Max Shaw mystery, the back and forth between the news vendor and his customers (the young boy, the lesbian taxi driver, Rorshach's psychiatrist), and so on. It's all these that helped Watchmen (the graphic novel) make such a large impact (on me, at least) and without all these added elements, the film seems bare, even at a 162 minute running time.
I don't know, maybe I should fork out three bucks and rent it again and see if I can become more forgiving towards it and give it a bit more appreciation, but at the moment, it's a film that shouldn't have been made.

Maybe Brodinski just hates the thought of seeing this thing end, or....
Maybe I was right and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring came in first and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind came in second. Brodinski isn't motivated to post the final two soon because not only would the countdown be over, but I would also be extremely happy for getting the final six right in my prediction. Thus, one reason he's waiting is so that I can suffer some before being happy.
I mean, if I was wrong, Brodinski could easily post them sooner so I could be very disappointed. Otherwise, he may be waiting so I could experience boredom, frustration = pain.
I don't care what you do. Take your time.

Comedies might be good but it might be a pain trying to define which films actually come under the genre. For example, I would say something like American Beauty has a lot of comedic elements but not everyone would call it a Comedy per se. IMDb defines it simply as a "Drama" in fact.
As for foreign films, I'm not sure enough people here (myself included) have seen enough of them yet to assemble a top 25 we're happy with, so the list probably wouldn't be representative of foreign film in general.

Agree with Skepsis, not enough have seen foreign to really make a top 100 list. We could do it, but the participation may be down a bit.
Now as for the 90's, that would probably work.
Comedies would be difficult, but it could happen.
Yeah, the pool for any such list needs to be 1) rigidly defined and 2) large, so there can be lots of potential surprises.

90s would definitely be a good one. If you were to do a world cinema list I think you'd probably have to cut down the submissions to 10/15 per person. Otherwise people may not bother making a list as they won't feel they've seen enough foreign films that are worthy of inclusion. Even myself while I've seen a decent-ish amount am not sure there would be 25 I'd be happy submitting for a best list. Towards the bottom there would probably be some that I merely liked/really liked but don't think I'd consider them special enough

I'd rather do a 60s, 70s, or 80s list than a 90s one. Although, my personal vote would be for an all-time top 100, that way it's all-encompassing. The 2010 MoFo 100 seems a bit outdated given the change in taste around here.
I think the further back in time we go, the shorter the list should be. Anything before the 90s should probably be a Top 50, for example.

I think that's why we need to pick a theme ahead of submission of lists, so we give ourselves time to see more potentially eligible films. In six months you could watch dozens of films from a particular time period or of a particular genre.
I don't agree that anything pre-90s would have to be limited to a top 50, are we seriously saying we couldn't each come up with a top 25 for the 70s and 80s? Especially if we had time to watch films from the decade beforehand.

It's not an epic tragedy or a cheesy rom-com or Robin Williams in drag. What's bad about it, though, is the same thing -- it's ordinary. And watching other people get high and argue and have sex gets a bit boring. But it's worth watching.
I think also that as with, say, a list of sci-fi movies, there are probably (older) films that ought to be included on a top 100 list for their historical significance that might be hard to get hold of or mightn't make the cut if it was purely a vote-in compilation of popular films.

Looks like 90's list is going popular idea. 90's vs Millenium would be interesting afterwards, are movie's really getting worse or not? Only 90's vs Millenium can answer that question.
Would be great if Brod did that too but, aswell as Skepsis I would be happy to run the list or help if Brod doesn't want the hassle.

This will give me an opportunity to watch all the 90s movies I should have already seen (The Matrix, Reservoir Dogs, The Usual Suspects, American Beauty, Saving Private Ryan, L.A. Confidential).
Let's definitely have a cool down after this one. But should someone decide to do another, let's try to find a consensus on that point. Whoever does, and whenever, I'd be glad to help. I can write a script to handle some of the tabulation, or just use a spreadsheet, etc. That would make it a good deal easier; the trickier part is the patient wrangling to get lists from at least several dozen members, to make it worthwhile.

Well I figured the idea of the cool down was so the members could start watching some 90s films - if that's the theme - that they haven't seen to make a more educated list

Don't think that should be too much of a problem for a film fan(unless they are quite young), surely by now most people have seen just about everything worth seeing from the 90's, certainly everything mainstream anyway, so perhaps before doing a 90's list people should brush up on the better foreign films of the 90s.
Yeah cooldown is right thing to do, no need to race into it, but don't need to hold it off for ages either.

Ya I think we should give it a few months just to begin submission. I don't see what the rush is. We have Oscars and Mofo Tournament 2013 going on so I don't think we'll be bored. Seems like there's plenty to do.
P.S. Brodisnki I think you should post the two remaining films today because it seems like ten focus is drifting.
P.S.S. I also agree with Gidoggo bout not posting are lists before hand next time around, I'm keeping mine until the very end even though I know no more are making it. Especially with 90s where there is so many films that could top it, it'd be so much better to come into this with a blind eye.

1. Goodfellas vs Fellowship
Who is gonna win? 1990s or 2000-2011?

1990s... all the way... so many good films compared to a lot of rubbish from more modern times.
1980s would then hammer the 90s, big time.

Interesting all the face off/tourneys that could come from these lists, I reckon 90s would beat 80s without really thinking about it but I would be bias cause I really grew up in the 90's and watched a lot of movies, although a lot of those movies were from the 80s.

I pick 90s for all of them except The Dark Knight > Matrix

All of them are worth it more or less (not sure about American Beauty because I haven't seen that one). I think LA Confidential is just a tad overrated but it's still a good film.
What I need to see for sure: Green Mile, Forrest Gump, Jurassic Park, Braveheart, The Thin Red Line, Groundhog Day, and Being John Malkovich.
Easy, MoFos. :D Brod already said they'd be going up today.

No way I'm buying that!!! This is all pure ego now! You just love the spotlight, and the power trip you're on having everyone waiting on your every post! :p
EDIT - Ok never mind. I offer my gracious apologies and thanks. :) And yay for Fellowship coming out on top. I love ESotSM but Fellowship is just on another level. Really surprised that made #1 to be honest, with the trilogy being split up I thought it would hurt its chances. Wasn't even that close in the end
There it is. SC's gonna flip out. :D
Note the big gap, too. Wasn't even all that close.

Over 50 points? Woah, I was honestly expecting Eternal Sunshine to win with the amount of love it gets around here. Two great films, recently watched the LOTR trilogy again and they are truly superb films, worthy of winning this list.

Well, I'm happy since I love both of them. I would have loved to see Eternal Sunshine win it, of course, but Fellowship is a deserving champion. As JayDee said, I am a tad surprised it got so many points given that the trilogy was split up, but I'm guessing most people who voted for one voted for them all (or this and Return of the King), and the rest voted for Fellowship alone.
Also props to Brod for completing this with style. It was very enjoyable following the countdown and discussing the picks with you guys.

4) The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
5) Almost Famous (2000)
6) Battle Royale (2000)
7) Into the Wild (2007)
