DAY 167: February 16th, 2009.

Evan Almighty

After what happened with Ace Ventura 2: When Nature Calls Jim Carrey has sworn off sequels, which is why we have been given such comedy gold as Dumb & Dumberer, Mask 2: Son of Mask, Ace Ventura 3, and this one...Evan Almighty. The difference is this one didn't seem like it was going to be horrible and fail, nor did it seem like a desperate cash in on the previous films name. It seemed to have some form of dignity, as the others did not. It starred Steve Carell and returning as the man upstairs Morgan Freeman.

The result is a film that has some heart but few laughs. It relies a lot on Carell and it just seemed too big a film for him to handle, nor did it seem like something he was comfortable with. Following in Jim Carry's footsteps is not something you want to do and it seems that the first film overshadows this one.

The jokes aren't fresh and throwing in The Santa Clause is just one of many reasons. The instant growing of the beard was funny in 1994, but using this same joke in 2007 just seems stale. I wanted to like this film, but it made it really hard to do so.

I did enjoy the animals though and some scenes did come off as smarter then I thought this film would be capable of. Specifically the scene involving Freeman and Lauren Graham in a diner.

The CGI wasn't horrible, but obvious with a lot of animals, also why do all these animals even need to be on the Ark? When you watch the film and you see what happens at the end it doesn't make sense. More then half of these animals do not live in the wild in Washington.

Skip this one unless you really have nothing better to do, it just too average and not really funny. I think it's just too family friendly.
