I do not remember a lot, it is old movie. At the beginning girls wake up after bad accident, possibly car crash. Then she set to a journey meeting a lot characters on the way, finally realizing at the end of movie that she actually died at beginning of movie

I know you said 1980s or 1990s, but there's a 2008 movie called Passengers with Anne Hathaway that is pretty close to the story you're after.
