Convict Conscription?

A few questions to those who know...

What do you think about criminals who are given the choice of serving their alloted prison term or joining the army?

-If you have experience of army life, do you think there are any differences in attitude etc amongst these criminal-soldiers? Do they have less respect for the flag? Are they less disciplined? Do they believe in the causes and nescessities of currently ongoing wars as much as regular soldiers?

-Do you know what type of criminals are offered this choice? (and what type/length of sentence? Is there a norm in this area?)

-Do you know what percentage of the american army is made up of soldiers commisioned in this way?

All clarification dearly appreciated...Just interested. I had no idea this sort of thing was still going on.

Golgot, from what I understand, America’s military is all volunteer now and even one DUI ticket on someone’s record can keep them from being allowed to join. Now having said that, I know several states have programs for problem teens that are run by ex-military personal and if the teens successfully complete the programs, they are given a clean slate and allowed to join the military if they choose to… they’re not made to…

My dad is ex-military and served during the time some criminals were given the choice of the military or prison… according to him, many of them turned out to be outstanding soldiers although like everything else, some of them never adjusted and either served their time and got out or got in trouble in the military and ended up in jail there…
