Daniel's Millenium Top 25 - What I would of voted for

The MoFo Millennium Top 100 and various other member lists have got me in the mood to compile one of my own. Just so you know I did not submit a 25 film list to Brodinski for the Top 100, I think I joined too late to notice so this is basically a list of what I would of voted for. You may disagree with some of the choices and their positioning as well as omissions that I might have awarded an higher actual rating, I found it extremely difficult trimming this down to 25 so probably have missed out a few of my own favourites but I've tried to go by enjoyment factor as well as quality. So here goes the first three...

25 - 3:10 to Yuma

When I originally watched this film I had not seen the original but having now seen both versions I strongly believe that this version is superior. A modern Western, "3:10 to Yuma" has it's own unique style, the journey that takes place with Christian Bale and Russell Crowe brings us a fantastic visual look at the Western landscape and combines it with action and memorable characters.

The original film is shorter, and cuts out most of the scenes that allow us to view the relationship that develops between the two leads to a greater extent. Russell Crowe is excellent as he attempts to psych out the group that is escorting him, the supporting actors are equally as strong and make for an extremely enjoyable film.

24 - Mystic River

I've only seen a few Eastwood films, fortunately this is one of them. Centred around a murder that takes place of a young girl, the daughter of Sean Penn, three childhood friends find themselves uniting again. It is these friends (Sean Penn, Tim Robbins and Kevin Bacon) that make the film so great.

The acting on show is some of the best you'll ever see, Penn and Robbins both won Oscars for their roles in the film and deservedly so. Both characters each have their own roles in the story, Penn is trying to uncover the truth behind his daughter's death and Robbins finds himself the number one suspect as we are shown the story of his childhood abduction. Some of the final scenes that take place with these actors are superb, if you've seen them then you'll know what I'm talking about.

23 - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

I am not the biggest fan of Jim Carrey, probably due to which films of his I had seen before this one. In this he plays a more sensible, quiet and real role in which he and Kate Winslet combine with fantastic lovable chemistry, Winslet here is actually the loudest and more eccentric of the duo in a fantastic performance that earned here an Oscar nomination. Normally I'm not the biggest fan of romantic films either, but this isn't just your usual emotional romance film, it's an intelligent and highly admiral film with a fantastic screenplay and plot that keeps you gripped throughout.

Edit: Tried changing the title to see 'have' immediately after posting but doesn't seem to work, if a moderator sees it can they do so please.

Loving your list so far. I did vote in the MoFo Millenium countdown and of the three movies you've posted so far, I voted for two.
Yeh, I knew as soon as you had posted that you would of liked it seeing as two of them are in your top 10. I am right in saying you're a big Pixar fan yes? If so then you'll probably like a few more of my selections further on although I've unfortunately had to leave out a couple of great ones as well

I am a big Pixar fan (though their last two feature films have been mildly disappointing) and had three of their films in my top 25.

22 - The Lord of the Rings (Trilogy)

I'm kind of cheating in this list by listing multiple films from series as one, if I had to choose one film to include from the LOTR trilogy it would be "Return of the King".

It's been a while since I've watched the trilogy but no one can deny how spectacular these epic fantasy films are. The fantasy world created is possibly the greatest of all time and the consistency in the three films is superb, we've got dark, gritty visuals, epic battle scenes and memorable characters that make the films so enjoyable and loveable.

21 - The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Swedish)

David Fincher's version of this film has already been revealed as part of the Millenium Top 100 and having seen both films I am not disappointed with its inclusion, both films are very similar and strong in their own ways however I feel that I slightly prefer the original Swedish adaptation.

Based on Steig Larsson's best selling novel, this film seems to have more of a rough, gritty feel to it. The performances from the Michael Nyqvist and Noomi Rapace are both superb. Unlike Daniel Craig, Michael Nyqvist seems less composed in his role, he is isolated and feels more nervous adding to the thrilling side of the film which I felt was important.

20 - Monsters, Inc.

Whilst I rate some other Pixar films higher than this one, "Monsters, Inc." will always remain a favourite of mine. I remember watching it regularly as a child and I've watched it recently too, with each viewing it doesn't seem to get old and still has that loveable charm that we have come to associate with Pixar.

"Monsters, Inc." has all the great elements of animations that I love, it's got a loveable centre, it's funny, full of energy and is the right length at just over 90 minutes. Then we've got loveable and memorable characters in Sully, Mike and Randall - something that has perhaps been missing in Disney's two latest releases "Cars 2" and "Brave". The voice cast is superb with distinct voices of John Goodman and Steve Buscemi starring as two of the main characters (like "The Big Lebowski") and then you have other great supporting stars such as Billy Crystal and James Coburn.

Love Monster's Inc, it's in my 100. I've only recently seen the original version of Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (I've still not seen the remake) but I don't get the love for it. It's ok, it's well made, etc, but I think Wallander or The Killing are far superior. Naturally, it's a different medium, but even taking that into consideration, I'd still watch a feature length episode of Wallander over "Girl".

Mystic River, Eternal sunshine, Monsters Inc, are all good films and LOTR is decent enough

I hate Lord of the Rings. All of them.

I haven't seen Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. I like Monsters, Inc. a lot, but I didn't vote for it. I'd probably rank it as my #6 favorite Pixar film.

19 - Inception

Nolan's big budgets summer blockbuster is not without its critics, some will criticise the lack of emotional depth and the amount of confusion confused by the whole thing but it's the grand scale of the film that makes it so enjoyable. Nolan applies his usual style of cinematography to create a visually stunning world for us, and the world he creates is unique, original and a bold idea, some will not get it but you have to admire what Nolan has created from an adventurous technical viewpoint.

18 - Memento

Another Nolan film, possibly my favourite of his. Memento really is a great mystery film with an excellent (although at times difficult to keep up with) story at the heart of it. It's intelligent and puzzling, you have to keep engaged for the entire film for the fear of missing something. As the whole film unravels and we reach the end things begin to become clearer and gives us a whole new perspective on everything we have just seen as the characters and their motives become truly defined.

17 - Chicken Run

Perhaps a surprise choice for my list, but I really love Chicken Run. Visually it is a work of art from the famous Aardman, British producers most commonly known for Wallace & Gromit. This was one of my favourite films growing up, and as a big fan of animation I can happily say I enjoyed it just as much on a recent viewing. The characters are great, the chickens and the farmers. Like a lot of animations, one of the biggest strengths of the film is its story at its centre as we see the Chicken's attempt to escape from inevitable death in the poultry farm.

All three are solid choices (though I didn't vote for any of them) and I expect both Nolan films to make the cut on the MoFo Milennium countdown.

Yeh I'd fully expect both them and his Batman trilogy to all get in the top 100, in fact I wouldn't be that surprised (although it's getting more unlikely) if every single one of his films from the time slot manages it with The Prestige also getting in, although I haven't seen that.

I wouldn't expect many have members to have seen or liked Chicken Run, so the chances of it getting on the list now are unlikely unfortunately

Thursday Next's Avatar
I never could get the hang of Thursdays.
Inception and Memento are good films and will almost certainly be on the list. I don't think the third Batman film was eligible for the list.

I like Chicken Run, some very funny lines, but I don't think it's got a chance of making it.

Oh yeh forgot about the rules, you are right about TDKR I think but my point still applies I suppose, I'd be shocked if both Batmans and Inception aren't on the list.

And yeh it is unlikely that Chicken Run will get on now, I wont say I'm disappointed because to be honest I don't think I've ever heard anyone speak about it but it is one of those films that I've always loved

I'd be surprised if TDK isn't top 10. I don't think Batman Begins was all that great, but it's better than Spiderman 2 and Iron Man and they both made it, so maybe it will and Nolan will get 5 films in there.

I still need to catch a few of these but good list so far. Eternal Sunshine, Lord of the Rings and Monsters Inc. are all brilliant. I've seen the remake of Dragon Tattoo and love that. Inception and Memento are good but too cold and calculated for my taste.

Chappie doesn't like the real world
I love Chicken Run. A lot. I didn't vote for it, but a different day I might have.

Memento I like, Inception I did not. I agree with Skepsis that it was too cold and calculated. I had numerous other problems with it too.

16 - Snatch.

I've recently watched and reviewed "Snatch", giving it 4.5/5. Ritchie's previous film "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" would have also made it on this list had it been within the time frame, both films are extremely similar and both very good. The film's are highly enjoyable, fast paced and unpredictable, filled with loads of memorable characters, each one funny in their own way. Really good, fun film that I recommend to anyone, an easy comparison but it is like a British "Pulp Fiction".

15 - The Social Network

When I heard about this film being produced I was interested in how it was going to be done, lets face it most people will watch this film because it is about Facebook so I would not have been surprised if it was not that good. But with an excellent director in David Fincher it is perfect for what it intends to be and I could not really imagine it any better. The film relies heavily on a brilliant script, performed to great effect from an array of actors ranging from Jesse Eisenberg to the surprisingly decent Justin Timberlake. It won Oscars for its screenplay as well as editing and score, this film is an example of how excellent film making can bring the most out of something and make it really great.

14 - Drive

I really love this film, a breath of fresh air, something unique in its style that makes it so great. Ryan Gosling is great in his intense and mysterious role as the driver, also superb is the supporting Albert Brooks who we initially see as a small time criminal boss but explodes in to an ultra violent and hated gangster. The whole feel, the colours and atmosphere is just great and is aided by Frank Martinez' wonderful score.

Not liking this trio. I didn't care for Snatch. I tried watching Drive, but got bored and turned it off pretty early on. I've not seen The Social Network, nor have I any desire to see it.
