I'm afraid Final Exam is too mild for Mr Error. He likes the rough stuff.

Were you a fan of Bly Manor and/or Hill House?
A problem MM thankfully avoids.

Rapid one word reviews and unformatted ratings from everything I’ve binged whilst sick (not Covid, apparently, so at least there’s that):
Satan’s Slave: Charming Bava/Hammer homage from Indonesia
3.5 stars
Satan’s Slaves: Charming reimagining akin to Conjuring universe meets Grudge.
3.5 stars
Prey: What happened Franck Khalfoun? You used to be beautiful.
2 stars
Frankenstein: Bernard Rose reimagining the classic tale ala Cronenberg body horror. Quite good but seemingly held back by budgetary and time constraints.
3.5 stars
The Collector: Top tier torture porn. More fun and Italian tinged than the Saw films, despite its pedigree. Somehow, I’d only seen the sequel.
4 stars
Hatchet 3: It’s a Hatchet film. You know what you’re getting.
3 stars.
Pledge Night: Campy, almost wonderful slasher meets Animal House and is oddly prescient in how toxic and unlikable it’s presentation of frats is. It tries too hard to be funny and has Anthrax thrashing during the scare scenes. I suspect more people here should watch it.
3 stars
Fade to Black: Almost great downward spiral flick. Fans of Martin and the Last Horror Film should give it a look.
4 stars.

(Unironically good film, btw.)
(Do we have a horror film about remote learning yet? Or would it be just as dumb as Unfriended?)

The Collector is a bit too torture-y for me (there's something with teeth, right? I think I've repressed most of that late-middle sequence in the basement). I do frequently watch [b]The Collection[b], which is a bit goofier and more action-oriented. I do think that the original has a better "lead guy and person he's saving" dynamic with the kid.
While the second is more “fun” and arguably imaginative, the claustrophobic “trapped in a house with a killer” vibe of the first is something that always tickles my sensibilities. It’s a reason why Torso and High Tension rank highly in my horror pantheon (gestures at my short film A Girl Alone In A House).
That said, they both make for what I feel is an underrated horror franchise that definitely deserved the ignominious demise of regular sequels with incrementally diminishing returns until it becomes a self parody that is then rebooted into oblivion.

The second film, which I do really like, is more silly. The traps and just the scope of the building are absurd. It makes me think of Hellraiser a bit, actually. The first film is more "domestic" and limited in scope, while the second goes into the world of the baddies and is much more over the top.
I would totally watch an entire series of those films. Now, Josh Stewart, the lead actor, apparently got really, really ill at one point. I'm not sure if that's why the franchise stopped there or what.

The first one definitely sits just close enough to "realism" (these are BIG air quotes) that it's a lot scarier and there's more of a roughness to it.

The writer/directors said they’ve been completely ghosted by the company that bought the rights as well so it’s effectively killed the franchise.
Sounds like some shady back door dealing went south. It’s a shame because they apparently had everything in order for a groovy follow up, including the lead actors returning.
But I need The Coll5ctor: In Space!!!
