Recommend a film!

Tools

Hello,

Hopefully I've posted this in the correct section, but I'm asking for film recommendations please.

What kind of films I'm looking for:
- English, preferably with mainly British or American cast
- at least one relatively well known actor
- preferably a male protagonist
- thriller
- horror (nothing too unrealistic and gory)
- crime
- drama
- biography
- kidnapping
- hostage
- serial killer
- fraud
- identity
- mystery
- set in the 20th or 21st century
- gangster films

- NO monsters and sci-fi-ish stuff
- NOT too old, e.g. I'd prefer not watching a film prior to 1980.

Films I like - in no particular order (as sort of a template)
- John Q
- Catch Me if You Can
- Training Day
- Copycat
- Goodfellas
- Casino
- A Bronx Tale
- The Iceman
- Inside Man
- Cellular
- Disturbia
- The Green Mile (usually I don't like films with unrealistic premises but this was good)
- Shutter Island
- Kindergarten Cop
- Taken
- Unknown

(I like so many films but I've had a massive mental block. I've probably missed out some main ones too.)

I'll edit this post later because there are a few things I've missed out.

Sorry if I'm rude but I'm right
- English, preferably with mainly British or American cast
- at least one relatively well known actor
- NOT too old, e.g. I'd prefer not watching a film prior to 1980.
Missing out so many great flicks, anyways watch Shame.

Look, I'm not judging you - after all, I'm posting here myself, but maybe, just maybe, if you spent less time here and more time watching films, maybe, and I stress, maybe your taste would be of some value. Just a thought, ya know.

Snatch
Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
Goodfellas
The Wolf of Wall Street
Taxi Driver
Asphalt Jungle
The Killing
The Godfather

Thanks for your suggestions.
- Snatch seems like a good bet.
- Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels looks like it's worth watching.
- I mentioned Goodfellas already, seen it a few times. Excellent film.
- I've watched The Wolf of Wall Street, forgot to mention it - it's very good.
- I watched part of Taxi Driver, not sure why I stopped watching it, I'll finish it off. Thanks for that.
- Don't seem too keen on Asphalt Jungle at the moment, thanks for the suggestion -- one day, maybe.
- The Killing (1956)? I'd give pretty much the same response as I did the Asphalt Jungle. Cheers.
- I've seen the Godfather actually, didn't really like it. "A little less conversation a little more action please" sprung to mind, I can recognise that it's a good film but it wasn't really for me.

Thanks for the suggestions, a lot of worthy stuff in there.

Missing out so many great flicks, anyways watch Shame.
Read the synopsis for that, actually seems like it's worth a watch, thanks for the suggestion. I know my criteria is quite picky, but I don't enjoy watching (quite) old films, I love old music, but just don't get along with old films, no idea why. You can probably disregard what I said about films with no well-known actor in it, that might be a little too far.

Shame starring William Shatner?

1980? You just eliminated 99% of the best movies!
As far as I saw, it doesn't star Shatner. Also, yeah, as I said above, don't really get on with older films. The 1980 was just an example, I can easily make exceptions. For example, I like the 1971 classic of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, but that is for another day. :P

- No Country for Old Men
- Heat
- Mystic River
- Léon: The Professional

- I've seen No County for Old Men, very good film, thanks for suggesting.
- I've actually watched part of Heat, didn't get very far, not sure why. It's definitely my type of film so I'll finish it one day.
- Quite strange because either today or yesterday I was going to watch Mystic River but something stopped me. It's definitely a worthy contender!
- Léon: The Professional looks like one to watch too.

Just here for the free donuts
- thriller - Primal Fear
- horror (nothing too unrealistic and gory) -The Descent
- crime- Serpico Before 1980 but whatever. Al Pacino rules.
- drama-There Will Be Blood or Legends of the Fall
- biography -Capote or Ali or The Fighter
- kidnapping-Prisioners
- hostage -^same as above
- serial killer -Se7en
- fraud
- identity
- mystery-The Fugitive
- set in the 20th or 21st century
- gangster films-Blood In, Blood Out Acting is a little corny sometimes, but it's a modern LA gangster classic.

I left a couple blank because I couldn't think of any that deal specifically with that and you had already mentioned Catch Me If You Can.

Thanks for the suggestions McMurphy.
Actually saw the film "Prisoners" yesterday! It was a good one.
Se7en is a really good film, saw that the other day.
I've seen the Fugitive before too. Good shout.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Hello,

I feel as if 28 Days Later fills most of your criteria. It's a English film directed by Danny Boyle and starring Cillian Murphey, Cristopher Eccleston and Brenden Gleeson. It's a horror / thriller film with a male protagonist, set in the 21st century that involves a kidnapping of two protagonists. While it is a bit gorey (featuring ill individuals vomitting blood) and those infected with the Rage Virus (which causes rabies-like symptons and violence against others) do strongly resemble next-gen zombies, I feel that e gore is subdued enough and the "zombies" realistic enough that it should be something that you'd enjoy based on this list of criteria. Also, the infected definitely take a back-seat in the climax to human-on-human violence.

Others that should largely fit your list of criteria include Zodiac, The Equalizer (a solid movie whose climax is spot-on lifted from 28 Days Later, No Country for Old Men and The Departed.. Although I haven't seen it yet, Taken also seems like it would fit the bill.

I guess :
Drive Hard
22 Jump Street
The Prince

Lord High Filmquisitor
Drive is another great film that fits a lot of your criteria.

I'm not a big caper fan, but "Asphalt Jungle" was really good.
I might watch it one day. :-)

Cop Land
American Gangster
Dead Man's Shoes
Cop Land was good from what I saw, but not sure if I ever finished it all for whatever reason, must've been close though. I'll probably re-watch it from the beginning at some point.
I started watching American Gangster but didn't finish that either, but I will certainly re-watch it from the beginning at some point.
Dead Man's Shoes seems like one to watch, thanks for the suggestion!

Hey, "28 Days Later..." looks like it should be good, that's one to add to the list for sure.
I watched Zodiac the other day, liked it.
The Equalizer seems like a good shout too.
By the way, Taken (1) is a good film, I'd recommend it. Don't like the second one too much from what I saw of it, but the third one (not out yet as far as I know) does look good. Thanks for the suggestions.

Twelve Monkeys is definitely worth a go.

Mix of sci-fi and thriller... pretty stylish too.
Looks alright, I'll probably give it a go sometime. Thanks.

Ok new movies... Watch:

-There Will Be Blood
-Magnolia
-Before Sunrise
-Trainspotting
-American Beauty
-Full Metal Jacket
There Will Be Blood seems like it should be worth a shot.
Same with Magnolia.
Before Sunrise doesn't really seem like my type of film but thanks anyway!
Transpotting seems like a good shout.
I've seen American Beauty recently, although it doesn't really seem like my type of film, I liked it quite a bit.
Full Metal Jacket seems like a good one. Thanks for the suggestions!

I guess :
Drive Hard
22 Jump Street
The Prince
Drive Hard seems to have rather poor ratings but it might be worth a shot, thanks.
22 Jump Street seems good.
The Prince seems alright, poor ratings but might be worth a shot once again. Thanks for the suggestions.

Drive is another great film that fits a lot of your criteria.
Yep, I've seen only a little bit of it before but did not watch much of it for some reason, but I'll watch it. Thanks everyone.
