I recorded a movie that we had, "Marvin's Room", and wanted to compare... Anyway, curious what movies you had in your place growing up, movies you actually saw... Not counting the kids stuff.

Marvin's Room
Forrest Gump
Over The Top
This Is Spinal Tap (me and my brother thought it was dumb then, now I love it)

I'll think of more later (I just put the movie in)

“I was cured, all right!”
Air Force One and Con Air (Two 'airplane movies', my father love this films set in airplane I don't know why...)
The Rock (another Nicolas Cage film)
Kiss of Deah (The 1995 version, and yes, another Nic Cage haha, my father likes him)
The Fugitive (Still my favorite Harrison Ford film, maybe because of this VHS nostalgia)
Flubber (Robin Williams cheese film, not my stuff, don't know why this film was in my house)
I also remember a porn film in the basement. Can't remember the name but.. Good old saturday nights

Titanic
Forrest gump
Flubber
Ferris bueller's day off
Toy story 1 and 2

Oh yeah, we had Titanic.. We took our little cousins (decade younger) to see it, and every time they would come over, they would wanna watch it. My uncle joked "They keep watching it thinking Jack is gonna live."

Me and my brother put on "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" but it wouldn't work.... "Red Dawn", too, but my mom described it. It sounded good as the time, but when I saw part of it once as an adult, I thought it was silly.... Still never saw "Broadcast News" and don't think anyone else did... We also had AMC on, which is the equivalency to TCM now.

The People's Republic of Clogher
Crocadile Dundee and ... Convoy.

Paul Hogan and Sam Peckinpah - Two men I've based my life on.

I have about 50 VHS tapes, Jaws, Weekend At Bernies, Beverly Hills Cop, Porkys, Cannonball Run, some with sausage in the title too! . They are not as clear as watching DVDs but it adds to that 80s feeling.

My dad had a machine that looked a bit like a VHS recorder but instead of playing tapes it played what can only be described as an LP, yet it was a film, he'd insert it into the machine while it was still in the plastic cover, then slide the cover out, leaving the disc inside the machine, haven't a clue what it was called. 😏

I still have a Betamax tape of Heavy Metal somewhere... Probably with my 8 Track version of In Through The Out Door...

Is a Betamax player a top-loader?

There were no VHS movies when I was a kid....we went to the nickelodeon to watch silent films
Same here. I even remember co-workers making fun of me because I didn't have a VHS player long after they'd been around (nor did I have "cable").

The first VHS I saw was Alien - at a friends house whose parents owned one of the first players (they always had the first of latest technology). What was weird is they'd go rent movies at a place in the back of a jewelry store before there were any video rental stores! Very bizarre - renting a movie there almost felt like an illegal drug deal, as movies were kept in a hidden area at the back of the store (not on display) and they had to be requested.

Dont think so. But my memory is hazy... And the thing you referenced in your post sounds like a Laser Disk.
Is a Laser Disk an old type of machine? This was about 20 yrs ago when my dad had it. Been dying to know what it's called

20 years ago? "LaserDiscs" were a flash in the pan technology here in the states in the mid 80's if I remember correctly. They were actually better for viewing and audio then VHS or Beta tapes but the players were like 3 times the price so they basically died out by the late 80's. According to wikipedia they actually didnt get popular in Europe till the 90's so that would work about right with the timeline you mention.

I'm totally getting an LD player..such a cool format. Album notes..just like vinyl...great titles, criterions with commentaries..only downside is laser rot...gotta roll the dice ahhh
