Fugui and Jiazhen endure tumultuous events in China as their personal fortunes move from wealthy landownership to peasantry. Addicted to gambling, Fugui loses everything. In the years that follow he is pressed into both the nationalist and communist armies, while Jiazhen is forced into menial work.

The party requires work from the family, and Feng Gui must make the choice whther to send his exhausted son to work, therefore staying in excellent favor with the party, or refusing to send his son, and letting him get the rest he desperately needs.

I read up on this film and found out that the director (Zhang Yimou) and Gong Li were both banned from working in film for the next two years, because the Chinese government was upset at the portrayal of the brutal truth of those times in this film.
