If someone could only watch five movies from the 2000s/2010s...

Tools

which would you recommend?

Don't assume this is the average movie goer. These are people really serious about the art of cinema.

That being said, it doesn't have to be academic. Just movies you think are great/important/fun/noteworthy/whatever.

2010s:
Tree of Life
Midnight in Paris
The Artist
Her
Wolf of Wall Street
Holy Motors and Oslo, August 31 cause I'm not gonna NOT put them...

2000s:
There Will Be Blood
Oldboy
Inglorious Basterds
Wall-E
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

I want to die for leaving off some of the movies that I did, but there. That's my list. Will be curious to read yours.

Lord High Filmquisitor
If I just go by my rankings / ratings (ie, what I consider to be the best)...

2000s:

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Brokeback Mountain
The Dark Knight
Capote
The Departed

2010s:

The Artist
The Avengers
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
X-Men: Days of Future Past
The World's End

If I were to adjust the list based on a combination of quality, depth (ie, how much there is to discuss / examine within the film) and (potential) influence, the list changes quite a bit.

Adjusted 2000s:

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Brokeback Mountain
The Dark Knight
There Will Be Blood
In the Mood for Love

Adjusted 2010s:

The Artist
Captain America: The Winter Soldier (although I still prefer The Avengers, this has far more discoursive "meat" on it)
The Tree of Life
The Social Network
Drive

movies? BS, watch the 11 episode TV series: Ping Pong The Animation. It's from 2014 and it is the greatest thing in the history of mankind, After watching it I noticed that my life had no real meaning before Ping Pong! It is that good.

Lucky Number Slevin? I don't think so.
I think that's one of the most underrated crime movies. And you know why? Because every crime movie that tries to be smart and with humor, everyone try to compare to Pulp Fiction. And of course Lucky Number Slevin ain't close to Pulp Fiction, but that doesn't mean it's not a great movie, but only that Quentin Tarantino have set a very high standarts on crime movie genre.

the movie has too much style and too little substance, it's not a bad movie by any stretch of the imagination but it is a weak one.

btw, interesting thread, I'd go for:

2000s
There Will Be Blood
The Dark Knight
Spirited Away
LOTR: The Two Towers (difficult to choose which one but this was my favourite)
Pan's Labyrinth

Honourable Mentions: (sory just had to write about these lol) District 9, Arrietty, Wall-E, Up, The Departed, Letters From Iwo Jima, OldBoy, No Country For Old Men, The Bourne everything lol

2010s
Inception
Cloud Atlas
The Raid (a top 10 all time action movie)
Drive (such a different experience to most modern cinema)
Life of Pi (for the visual spectacle)
