Kenny, don't paint your sister.
I never saw or even heard of The Jerk.

Just a little FYI. I haven't seen it either, but it doesn't surprise me that it is kind of popular.

So do you guys live under the same rock?

I know I've only been in love with this movie for thirty years, four weeks and three days, but to me it seems like sixty-two years, nine weeks and five days. The first year seemed like a decade, and the second year seemed like six years, and the third year seemed like a decade again...

Close Encounters
Jaws
Star Wars
The Jerk
Godfather
Kramer Vs Kramer(or was that an 80s release?)

Before my time, and I don't watch too many movies older than me. But thats a small list that should spark something. How can anyone not like The Jerk..LOL
Kramer vs. Kramer was released in 1979--and it won the Best Picture Academy Award for that year, also, I think.

^ Great to see Tarkovsky's Solaris so high!
It's a great film... and a little underrated if you ask me.

Watching Andrei Rublev tonight, hoping it's as good as people say.

^ I await your response! I think its a film that divides Tarkovsky fans... those in favour of his color, more meta-physical films than his b&w ones (Rublev and Ivan's childhood)

One thing I noticed while editing my best-of lists for the 1970s is what a fecund decade it was for young film-makers to experiment with and extend horror and thriller tropes handed down from the previous generations of film-makers.

I think that's because Hollywood no longer had any real idea what sold anymore. Musicals and biblical epics were no longer in fashion and the money men were prepared to give these younger guys the opportunity to try something different, in the hope it was what people wanted. Then Jaws happened and, after that, Star Wars and finally E.T. After that, Hollywood were much more confident, took less risks and started tp aim their product at a different audience. Add to this the growing importance of the worldwide gross since the 90's (the rise of celebrity culture) and a greater non-English speaking audience) and you get simpler, less adult films, with rudimentary dialogue and scenes which takes the plot from set piece to set piece.
