i hate to disagree with you, but other ( respected ) members have tried that on me, so let's not be high and mighty here, we all make mistakes.....it just so happens that obiwan did it all the time....

I have seen 21 of those films...Among my favorites are Magnolia, Donnie Darko, Halloween, TCM, and Stand By Me...I find it a little odd that they did not include American Beauty or the most glaringly obvious Titanic. And how is it that they mentioned a bunch of horror movies without listing Night of the Living Dead or A Nightmare on Elm Street. And there are suspiciously no Tim Burton films on the list either...

Whoever said Titanic and Burton I must have to agree.

Burton's movies are all beautiful, and they are well acted.

Titanic, as much of a sell out movie it is, was still great. The brilliant minor character development and then death really helped sell the history of the Titanic's sinking and I believe it should be studied by every film student as a viable way of creating drama and compassion in a historically accurate romantic light.

American Beauty should be there, especially when heat is on the list.

I'm no administrator, but is it really that difficult to be civil and respect each other? This isn't a boxing ring; it's a place for people to discuss the movies they liked and didn't like...Why get so personal? That's all...I have nothing else to say about this and it is the last comment I am making on the subject at the moment.

I dont know who all has seen Donnie Darko, but i was surprised to see that film rated so low... I mean 87, considering the number of christians and the strong religous meanings behind it, i thought it also would have been more popular in the us, does anyone know why that movie was shot outa the sky in the us? it was a little drawn out but when i was finished i was stunned with the outcome. . .
Also justa thought and maybe im wrong, Halloween is nice to watch and all but top 100 movies. . . If you can find me one person who could honestly say that Halloween is a greater film than The Shining i think i would have to kill myself. . . Seriously Psycho... PSYCHO does no one realize that you cant even compare these genres? i mean to put a movie like halloween in the same league as Psycho, The Shining. . . and on top of that have it atop them both... i dunno im rambling now, but that just rubs me the wrong way...

Haha wow. Where is Schindlers List?!? Hotel Rwanda?

I don't like Heat either. I found it stodgy, predictable and totally forgettable.

Goodfellas is a fantastic movie. Almost every scene is a classic in its own right, and yet the film flows superbly well. I doubt if it's the best film ever, but it's worthy of consideration. It is head and shoulders above every other American film in the last 20 years.

The Fabulous Sausage Man
That list is so terrible; it's like the readers voted...but then they add some classic arthouse choices just to make the list appear more respectable. It still looks like trash though - I wouldn't be surprised if Sin City was in there. It's like compiling a list of the greatest novels ever written and then including trashy, popular fiction like The Da Vinci Code and then squeezing in The Brothers Kamarazov at the last minute, at #70 or something. God, it's awful.

edit: why the hell didn't they include any Kurosawa films?

Thursday Next's Avatar
I never could get the hang of Thursdays.
I don't see what the problem is with a list containing 'popular' (not trashy) films like Sin City and 'arthouse' films. It is possible for people to like both.

good list..

Here are some 60-odd films (listed by date of release) that deserve to be included on any best films list that encompasses the whole history of the movie industry instead of the last 40-50 years. I’ve tried not to duplicate any of the entries on Total’s top 100 list. Many of those are good, some are outstanding, but I doubt if many of the films from the last 20 years—GoodFellas, for example—will be remembered more than 90 years after their release like some of the old classics from the silent screen.

Charlie Chaplin
Idle Class (1921)
Gold Rush (1925)
City Lights (1931)
Modern Times (1936)
Great Dictator (1940)

Keaton
The General (1927)
Steamboat Bill Jr. (1928)
The Cameraman (1928)

Harold Lloyd
Safety Last! (1923)
The Kid Brother (1927)

Intolerance (1916) D.W. Griffith
Way Down East (1920) D.W. Griffith
Greed (1924)
The Big Parade (1925)
The Battleship Potemkin (1925, USSR)
The Jazz Singer (1927), it was the first feature-length Hollywood “talkie” film in which spoken dialogue was used as part of the dramatic action.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923) Lon Chaney in makeup
The Thief of Bagdad (1924) particularly for its special effects
The Phantom of the Opera (1925) Again, Lon Chaney
Wings (1927)
The Cocoanuts (1929)
Hell's Angels (1930), some of the best air combat sequences ever filmed
All Quiet on the Western Front (1930)
M (1931)
Howard Hawks’ original Scarface (1932)
Mutiny on the Bounty (1935)

Ran (1985)
A Fish Called Wanda (1988)
Do the Right Thing (1989)

There are a number of things that are brilliant with Heat but I'll settle with mentioning that it's one of the best depictions of "manhood" that I've ever seen.
Now I just have to ask what you mean by that.
