What is your movie speciality?

Tools

My specialty would have to be classic horror (1970's and earlier) because those were the kind of films that got me into movies in the first place everything from the Universal Monster, Hammer, Creature Features from the Cold War, Night of the Living Dead, and so on.

Psychologically oriented suspense/thrillers in general. Alfred Hitchcock has long been my favorite director and always will be. I generally love to be on the edge of my seat, but a genuinely good Hitchcock film usually indicates that the "suspense", while relevant, is really taking a back seat to the more profound (not to mention personal) themes relating to relationships, obsession, and voyeurism, etc (see: Vertigo and Rear Window). Structurally with these films, I always love to be misled into believing the movie will head one way, only to be proven wrong when the revelation comes and forces one to reassess what has just been seen. Hitchcock aside, any filmmakers that carry a 'Hitchcockian' flavor with their movies while still retaining their own unique style, also fascinate me greatly (see Clouzot, De Palma, Chabrol, and Argento...)

What types of films do you specialize in?
What other types of films would you like to get to know better?

Anime films. Love em, love the themes and the japanese way of portraying things, I know more about them than any other genre.

My second would have to be thrillers. I love thrillers/suspense and I also love a great horror movie. Rear Window and Vertigo were fantastic. Chinatown, fantastic. Dial M for Murder, fantabulous. I haven't watched enough thrillers though, but I've ordered about 40 thriller DVDs.

Well, I am kinda' scattered across the board. I do admire the work of Cronenberg. Videodrome being my favorite, of course. The Dead zone in second, and The Fly being third.

Come to think of it...
I wasn't aware of it, until this thread.
I guess I specialize in war movies.
Especially World War Two.
But I'm not obsessed with them.
Right now I'm obsessed with how I wish I had a working knowledge of logic, and writing fallacies.

I am burdened with glorious purpose
Not exactly sure what you mean by the word "speciality" but if you're asking what is my favorite genre....

Epics. Larger than life films that encompass a grand scale. And especially historical epics and films based on classic literature. Some favorites:

Lawrence of Arabia
Dances With Wolves
Braveheart (even if the history is rather dubious)
Master and Commander
The Pirates trilogy (there is a bit of history/grand scale to it but I really love it because of Johnny)
Spartacus
Gladiator
Hawaii

Anything to do with King Arthur.

and the best one of all... The Lord of the Rings.

I do have a thing for men who wear boots and wield a sword.

Sugarcoma, Hitch is also my favorite director. I liked your post. He wasn't called the "Master of Suspense" for nothing.

Another favorite genre is film noir. I'd like to see some good ones come along. Haven't seen a good one since LA Confidential.

As to your second question, I don't think there is any genre I want to know better...but I can say I hate horror!

Tramp, Chinatown and The Usual Suspects are great film-noirs. I'm about an hour through L.A Confidential, and it's getting pretty interesting.

Couldn't agree more! Two favorites.

I'll be curious as to what you think of LA Confidential by the end. Some people don't like the ending; they feel it doesn't stay true to the genre. It's my favorite of the three, though. And Russell Crowe is simply magnificient in it.

Hello Salem, my name's Winifred. What's yours
I thought LA Confidential had a pretty great ending regardless of its loyalty to the genre.

I'm pretty good with musicals and Disney movies, i dont think id say anything was definitely my specialty though, my dvd collection is so varied I wouldnt have watched enough of one genre to say.

Pretty much anything except Anime and Horror. But Noir and Westerns are probably my favorite genres, if forced to choose. I suppose I know a fair deal about both.

By speciality I just mean a genre/film/film by a certain director(s)/films with a certain actor(s)/actress(es) .. etc that you have a great amount of knowledge towards or interest in (which your favorite genre would be a great example )

Thanks for the awesome posts guys! I'd love to hear more of them!

Not sure you want to hear from me again, but since you put it this way, I'd like to add:

Actors: Johnny Depp, Russell Crowe, Sean Bean, Gabriel Byrne (I watch all their work, even the not so great (or even good lol) films.

Crowe turned me onto Australian cinema. Some of my favorites:

Proof (great little film with Crowe/Hugo Weaving)
The Sum of Us (a wonderful gem; heartwarming)
Romper Stomper (violent as heck, but interesting)
The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (fun, fun, fun!)
Gallopi (that final shot... sigh)
Mad Max (who can forget this??)
Picnic at Hanging Rock (Peter Weir is a genuis)
Muriel's Wedding (cute)
Strictly Ballroom (early Baz)
Moulin Rouge! (genuis Baz)
Babe (a talking pig, who would have thought?)

I also think British Comedies are great.
