Nostalgic for '90s alternative lately. I liked, but didn't love this song when it was on the radio, but it hits harder for me as an adult:

I've got new Kamasi Washington, Dua Lipa and Sia albums to look forward to today.

What in every **** is going on this year? The output of amazing album is incredible. The new Kamasi Washington is nothing but sheer diversified and spiritual brilliance. One of the coolest and most empowering albums ever (and if I may use this as a compliment, one of the blackest).


Here's my current top 10 of 2024 now that a third of the year is over.

They're a damn good one.

Indeed. One of the first bands that really got me into black metal. I think Autumn Aurora is their best!

My first was At the Heart of Winter, followed by Bergtatt. Now I'm trying to educate myself further in doom metal. Assignment:



It's impressively deep so far, but as a critic I favor albums that work with multiple styles of songwriting (not necessarily genres, hence South of Heaven), to decrease the risk of monotony. And this is an hour long doom album, so let's hope they fit the bill.

Immortal was the one core Norwegian band that never clicked for me! Though, I guess Ildjarn has't quite either---though I love his ethos.

When it comes to variation, I think it really depends on what genre I am listening to. With some black metal (like Drudkh, Ildjarn, Burzum, etc.), I think the consistency is part of what makes things great---but I can totally see what you mean. Especially when driving, variety can go a long way!

Doom is not something I have gotten too much into, though I do like some of the stoner-leaning bands like Electric Wizard, Om, and Sleep.

Stoner doom is a tag I use often to describe bands like that. It's not a common one that makes it onto metal websites, though. Shame. it's the same with "Gothic Doom" like Type O negative and My Dying Bride.

Ok, I would add gothic doom to my taste too. Type O Negative is amazing!

Imagine my surprise when I listen to all the TON albums and go back to Bloody Kisses which I had already heard once, and it ended up my number two metal album of all time, although there's less doom and more alternative, punk, psychedelia, etc.\

Right now I'm starting a Ruins of Beverast marathon. I'm gonna get through al their studio albums and maybe their live album. Currently it's their debut, Unlock the Shrine.

Nice list! Interesting placement of the Emperor albums, and it's cool to see Blut Aus Nord ranked so highly. Also, good to see Blind Guardian represented! Have you listened to their live in Japan album? That's my favorite by them.

Didn't expect to see Man is the Bastard/Bastard Noise there either. If you ever get the chance to see him live, DO IT. He's super nice and eccentric (and seemingly willing to engage in extreme violence lol), and really interesting to chat with.

Yep. I favor Prometheus because it's the one Emperor album that explores the most. See, Emperor made their bones breaking the cardinal rule of extreme metal: no synths. Since then, they've been changing their sound each album, and Prometheus explores the combinations of the three different sounds of the first three albums in a consistent whole. This is also why I favor Emperial Live Ceremony, as the instrumentation on the other live albums makes all these songs from different albums sound like they're all from the same album. That's not Emperor. Emperor is the embodiment of evolution. They're the Blob constantly growing. They're the cover of an Animorphs book.


I haven't heard that Blind Guardian album just yet.

Definitely check out that Blind Guardian album. By far my favorite of their releases---a best-of tracklist, but heavier and more aggressive sound/vocals!
