1940's Hall Of Fame Part I

Women will be your undoing, Pépé
great write up, cricket, on the feel of the movie as you watched it. Must of been quite the watch on a big screen.

Have only seen a few of Ford's; Grapes, My Darling Clementine, Stagecoach and few others that I don't remember at the moment and Daniel expressed it best when it comes to the ones I've seen and what little I've heard about the man: "a national pride, hard work, family values etc., a mix of some more conservative/national values mixed with more socialist working class elements." when talking about a Ford flick.

First time seeing the video, Camo; you can almost hear the panic in the interviewer's voice as it goes on and Ford refuses to talk - about anything.

And CR, great breakdown on Laura, it's a guaranteed spot on my 40's list and may very well be my first movie to watch for this list.

The interviewer is Peter Bogdanovich. Director of The Last Picture Show, Paper Moon, etc.

He's also in The Sopranos

Wow I figured it was some dumb kid. He's a pretty excellent director in his own right.

Trouble with a capitial 'T'
I see Peter Bogdanovich quite often on DVD extras talking about past directors. The man is fascinating to listen too, he really knew a lot of the great directors.

He's always been a high society New-Yorker so he's had access to these people, much more than any of the other big New-Hollywood directors like Scorsese, De Palma, Penn, Altman, etc, did there was even a running joke about it in an episode of How I Met Your Mother. I think like with everything there's a generational gap between the old and the new, and for some reason Bogdanovich managed to squeeze himself in with the directors that were his heroes. Guys that were nearing the end of their lives and had no intention of hanging out with Scorsese or whoever.

Trouble with a capitial 'T'
I think he had an early film project that involved interviewing directors, I don't know that for sure but it seems he mentioned something like that on the F for Fake on the DVD extras. I've only seen 2 of Bogadovich's films recently, the last one being one of his first directorial assignments working for Roger Corman on a bad B movie Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women (1968), which I reviewed. He did the narration for that film too.

Murderers Are Among Us (Wolfgang Staudte 1945) is actually a 1946 date. I only mention that as I was looking for it and couldn't find it, so if you search for it including the year type 1946.

Pursued
(Raoul Walsh 1947)...I found a high quality online copy of this and it says it was restored. It looked good. If anyone needs a link PM.

Would so love if Bogdanovich had made up a phantom project to get everyone to look for it, to go along with the movie

I never even noticed the mistake with the year. I thought I said 46 in my PM, but maybe I wrote 45 instead.

Murderers Among Us was the US title for the film, so you might find it under that as well, in case the "are" in the title throws it off. If you're looking online, people who can't type umlauts tend to type oe instead of ö, so you might see it listed as Die Moerder sind unter uns instead of Die Mörder sind unter uns (if it's even listed by its German title).

Trying Real Hard To Be The Shepherd
Yeah, there were three titles and two years on Wikipedia. I will fix in the first post.

Cosmic, do you speak German by any chance? I found a nice copy of your film in German by searching for the German title, but damn if I know what there saying, I need subs!

Camo, you find Murderers Are Among Us on Dailymotion, did it have English subtitles? I found it on youtube but no subs.
It did have subs mate but it wasn't the best copy. I'll send you it since i'm not sure what the policy towards Dailymotion is here.

Also pretty sure this is anti-nazi, of course it wasn't 1945. It would've been rude to make this while knowing Hitler is maybe watching this in his bunker

Looking at Dailymotion, there's a copy of the film there with English subtitles. The runtime might seem a bit short, but skipping through it, the entire film seems to be there. It's just the opening and closing credits have been completely cut off.

Yeah, that's the one i just sent Citizen. So that's fine? I only skipped through it but it looked a bit grainy, which is why i thinking of looking for it elsewhere.

I do.

This film was released in a number of English speaking countries though, and is one of the most well known films from the immediate post-War era, so I imagine it should be easy to find.

The director of this film was actually involved with Jud Süß, a notorious Nazi propaganda piece. Die Mörder sind unter uns was not just about Germany's collective guilt, but also about Staudte coming to terms with his own past.

It looked a bit shaky to me in parts, but that doesn't mean that it's a bad version. The rubble films did have a dirty, grainy look to them. I actually haven't seen Die Mörder sind unter uns in about 5 years, so I don't recall what the DVD quality looked like exactly. It wasn't smooth though.
