Brilliant movie! 7.5/10.

Hors Satan (2011)

Another obtuse effort from Bruno Dumont, I liked it. The pace is deadly slow and reminds me of "Flanders" but the performances more than make up for that. It's a confusing film with his usual themes, chance, blame and redemption. There's a privacy (for want of a better word) about this film that is touching and at the same time voyeuristic. 7.5/10.

I liked this better than you but I can see your points. I thought for a first time director that this was very bold and to my eyes, he pulled it off nicely. I did watch it twice, however. I think this sort of film needs to be seen twice so you can take it all in, the 2nd time being a real payoff.

Loved the dialog concerning toilet wipes vs. toilet paper. Very funny stuff.
[re Too Late] I think that you're right about a second watch pretty much being necessary, if for no other reasons than clarity, and also to enjoy some of the stuff missed the first time by trying to figure out what was going on...

I hope Hauck gets to do some other films. He's certainly not without real talent.

The Thin Man (1934)

A comedic murder mystery is not a combination I'd normally favor, but I thought this movie pulled it off. It is fast paced and entertaining with great characters. I especially loved Myrna Loy. Extra credit goes to the dog and all the boozing. I'd probably like this even more with repeat viewings.

One of the neat things with the Thin Man series (in addition to the boozing) is they are rife with sexual innuendo which was virtually unheard of at the time. Perhaps a little more leeway was given considering that Nick and Nora were married and the repertoire was usually between them. It's subtle, but very suggestive. Watch a few more and you'll see what I mean.

Sexual innuendo was unheard of at the time? Who told you that, cap? Movies were full of it just from my POV.

Some movies. Most tried to adhere strictly to the morality code that was instituted in 1934. Nick & Nora really seemed to enjoy winking at the audience not just as passing inference to a "good" marriage, but as an intentional point to push the code (but that's just my opinion).

Anyway, it was refreshing to see a married couple on screen who really seemed to enjoy each other and know how to have a good time. Can't remember, was it the 2nd or 3rd sequel where baby Charles showed up? An obvious testament to a healthy marriage!

More trivia: Don Adams said that he based the voice style of his character of Maxwell Smart (from Get Smart) on William Powell in the Thin Man series. I never picked up on this, but once hearing it you can go back and kind of see / hear it.

Oh thanks. I didn't realize there was a morality code.

Yeah, it was the one that said men and women couldn't be depicted in bed together - and if they were both sitting on a bed then one of them had to have at least one foot touching the floor! (I love the strange detailed minutia they got into in those days!)

OH the memories. I always wondered why they were always in single beds in some movies. The morality code. Thank you. I vaguely recall the one foot on the floor deal. I'm now seeing a lot of old movies in bits and pieces of the black and white movies because my sleep is mucked up and there's a channel here that plays them late at night. I think it's really clever how they sneak in the sex business. Now it's all in your face so the younger demographic is missing out on what we went through. TV here was pretty prudish until two particular TV shows got away with T&A, then it sort of exploded. I remember seeing actors talk about it last year in interviews. Then all subtlety was gone.

Wow. I remember asking my mum and dad why they were laughing all the time. They would say 'the birds and the bees'. What a trip down memory lane. 🐦And 🐝

Goosebumps (2015)

I came into this movie with a poor man's Jumanji (the original) kind of expectation, and I wasn't disappointed. The characters all seemed to carry their own weight, with Jack Black portraying his usual oddball performance to perfection. It had the right balance of scary-lite moments and funny moments, almost in a Stranger Things kind of way. I think this movie could have turned out a lot worse, but it kept me entertained even when I knew it was a bit too Disney-ish at times.

★★
Wagner Moura and André Ramiro are the best and only good thing about this film.

★★★★★
Cristian Mungiu knows how to make a film!
Very powerful stuff! Beautifully shot, the cinematography is remarkable. The acting is pretty impressive. One hell of a movie.

★★★★★
Repressed feelings in a painful history with incredible actress!
Great use of flashback. Rigorous "Mise en scène";
Photographed by Bergman's longtime collaborator, Sven Nykvist, I think that during the 70's he was in a high state of creativity. Needless to say that this film has an incredible use of colors.

★★
Lost much of the good stuff on a second view.

★★★★★
A director that needs more attention!
This is one of that movies (just like Cristian Mungiu's Beyond the Hills) that you can't figure out where he's going. This film took my hand and took me on a journey full of uncertainties and difficulties, where nothing happens and at the same time, irreparable damage happens.

It was all right. A few things bothered me but it had it's moments. More suspenseful than scary.

Very good but not what I'd call enjoyable. Right now, I can't think of another actor I enjoy watching more than Idris and he hits it out of the park in this. Just an amazing actor. The kid that played Agu, fantastic job as well. Come to think of it, everyone was pretty much on top of their game. And that scene where Agu has to kill someone for the first time - WHOA! That's up there with one of the hardest scenes to watch.
