Jaws was my number 8. The Godfather was my number 20, though to be fair I have only seen The Godfather once. I have seen Jaws a countless number of times in the past few years which is probably why I was rooting for it to win. Jaws is a thriller that is executed in the most perfect way, with the acting, score, and cinematography leading the charge. Plus it is responsible for Jaws the ride at Universal Studios, and, well, that was just epic. It is indeed Spielberg's masterpiece.

The Godfather had such a high expectation for me and it really very nearly met those expectations, but I don't think it is THE greatest film made. Still a really good film.

I had Jaws on my list at 23. I think it's a great movie, even if it beat Alien in that monster movie tournament. I don't hold no grudge. Jaws is scary and has great characters you come to love more and more as the film goes on (my favorite scene, actually, is when Brody has his little moment with his kid at the dinner table). With Jaws and Star Wars, blockbusters never got any better than they where they started.

The Godfather is pretty great too, but I didn't have it on my list simply because there are a lot of 70's movies I like more. Still, it gets all that praise for a reason. My first viewing of it was in a cabin I was at when I was 16, I watched it on a small laptop in the middle of the night while everyone else was asleep, and afterward I felt like I was part of the Corleone family, like I was a mobster almost (as cheesy as that might sound). Daniel hit the nail on the head - one of the best things about the movie is how you feel like you're part of the family.

My full list:

1. Alien
2. Fantastic Planet
3. Halloween
4. 3 Women
5. Harold and Maude
6. Stalker
7. The Holy Mountain
8. Aguirre, the Wrath of God
9. Star Wars
10. Cries & Whispers
11. The Conversation
12. Autumn Sonata
13. A Clockwork Orange
14. Eraserhead
15. The Tenant
16. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre
17. The Long Goodbye
18. That Obscure Object of Desire
19. Taxi Driver
20. Nosferatu the Vampyre
21. F for Fake
22. The Mirror
23. Jaws
24. Suspiria
25. The Wicker Man

By the way, if you haven't done so already, go to the first post in this thread and rep the man. It's already the highest-repped post in site history, but I daresay it deserves a little more.

Also, freaking huge round of applause for Holden. Fantastic job sir!

Epic post Daniel you almost made me cry . Two things that's always baffled me of the way The Godfather is portrayed in popular culture, is how the Horse head scene is without a doubt the most parodied scene. And how “Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.” is probably the second most quote line after, "I'll make him an offer he can't refuse. Not that there's anything wrong with either but i just can't see why those two are seen as among the most iconic moments in it.

Wow... now I have something to aim for in life, a collection like this
That is only a small fraction of my collection. Those DVDs behind me, I think those are around 2,000+ or so. I have about 8,000, and growing. And I put a handful of '70s LaserDiscs in there for decoration, but I still own about 400 LDs. Though I do kind of like the way they are displayed above the shelves, like that. I may have to put in a permanent little ledge so I can always have some prominently visible.

That reminds me of a conversation I had with way-back-when MoFo The Silver Bullet. He was (is) engaged to a girl who had never seen The Godfather, and was going to make her watch and make her some cannoli. My response:

"Leave the girl. Make the cannoli."

1. Because it's the most violent and therefore memorable.

2. I think it's because out of context, it seems pretty funny. Within the context of the film, it makes a lot more sense and isn't that unordinary. I think it just perfectly captures the spirit of the film and family, they're balancing violence with ordinary family things, food

Also, freaking huge round of applause for Holden. Fantastic job sir!

Yep, deserves as much credit, praise and applause as possible. Superb job from start to finish.

So 1973 has the most titles, but none in the Top Ten. 1970 has the least, and didn't get higher than #53. But all in all, pretty well spread out over the decade. 1979 was the surprise year, for me. I wouldn’t have predicted thirteen would come from that year.
