I never could get the hang of Thursdays.
The only pair I can vote on at the moment, and both my picks against each other!

10. Howl's Moving Castle (2004) vs Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem (2003)

I like Howl's Moving Castle, its inventive and entertaining, but I'm not quite sure all the aspects of the story are tied up in a satisfactory way at the end. Interstella I love because it's inventive, letting the images and the soundtrack tell the story, a real audio-visual experience. Plus, Daft Punk. If you haven't seen it before and watch it for this tournament, do hang on past the first song. It's a bit boring just watching an animated band play a song, but the story gets going after that.

I will edit this post as I watch more anime films. I'll put the films I haven't seen yet in italics and I'll underline the ones I have, so it's very clear (for me).

I will probably not see all of these films, but I'll try to watch as many as possible in the next month. There certainly are a few classics I still have to see.

4. Akira (1988) vs Only Yesterday (1991)

It's been a long time since I watched Akira, and I might appreciate it more if I watched it again now, perhaps. I was curious about Only Yesterday, especially seeing as Guaporense talks about it constantly. It's definitely worth watching if you're at all interested in movies about childhood, like Little Red Flowers or My Father's Glory. The sections about grown-up Taeko and her love of the countryside were less successful, I thought, and it did drag a bit at times. There were times as well when I thought the random flashback structure was there to disguise the lack of coherent plot. But overall, I thought it was pretty good.
