The Lobster (2015)

Saw this one at the theater tonight. It's a very original film! The first half is simply fantastic and brings you to some very odd places and while the second half takes a more familiar road and has a bit of a slower pace, it does lead to a great conclusion.
The filmmaking will also leave you breathless. The director, Yorgos Lanthimos, is definitely someone we should keep an eye on.
Also, if you're a Colin Farrell fan, The Lobster is an absolute must see. He's perfect in it.
This is probably my second favorite film of the year so far, right behind Youth. Be sure to give it a watch if the crazy premise seems like something you'd enjoy.

Sarah saw it last night too at AFI. She said it was her third favorite movie out of the five she's seen there so far. I didn't really like the director's Dogtooth or Alps.

Bridge of Spies -
Historical Spielberg by numbers, yet still enjoyable in spite of that.

To Be or Not to Be
Well colour me impressed! This was my introduction to Lubitsch and what a delight it was. Hilarious, exciting, witty, charming, & ridiculously entertaining to boot. Instant favorite. Masterpiece.

An ex soldier of fortune is being hunted down to hide a (gasp!) conspiracy.
Ok, we've seen this one before, like a thousand times. The mega-warrior uses his mad skillz to defeat evil assassins. Felt like a pet vanity project for Penn, on account of the humanitarian/United Nations theme. He does look fantastic though, all pumped up and intense. He did get Charlize at one point, so he's doing something right.
Just not in this film Sean. With all that talent, just looking tough and holding a gun doesn't quite do it for me. All the elements should work, but they seem disjointed. Even the additions of Javier Bardem and Idris Elba didn't help much. (I wish I had a cool Interpol guy to sit on a park bench with me, looking all wise and eye-twinkly, to give me his business card in case I get into trouble.) They stole almost every spy thriller cliche they could get their hands on.
Sean Penn has deposited enough into my fan-bank account with Fast Times, Falcon and the Snowman, At Close Range, among many others. He just made a huge withdrawal with this one, but there's plenty left.
If you're looking for an ok thriller, as I was, check it out. Don't expect too much though.
2.75 intense looks out of 5.

Her A very beautiful life-affirming, find one's self movie. I was caught up from the get-go and loved the direction and ending to this premise of a man and his AI OS (operating system).

Broken City same ole premise; bad man in power, unwilling pawn fights back. Nothing new, but not horribly done either. Worthwhile.

This Means War I did not want to like this. I did NOT want to like this bromance, Rom-Com. . . . but I did.

The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

Overall, disappointing.
When I watched the trailer, there were 5 things that made me want to watch this movie:
Guy Ritchie film
A remake of a cult series
Armie Hammer (yes I like Armie as an actor)
A SWAG-filled Cavill
It looks like this year's best comedy movie
What I found out watching the movie:
The story lacks a little coherence
Cavill is more of a dick than a likeable character
The ending doesn't come up to expectations
It's waaaaaay more of a drama than a comedy
I don't know what Ritchie tried to do, but I expected something better. Of course, there were some good parts like the final car chase, the final fight,
and some jokes. what's bad though, is:
Some story
Some CGI
Some acting (the Italian girl)
Some fill-ins
Some predictable moments
Overall, I did enjoy the movie, it's entertaining. But still, come on Guy Ritchie, you can do better than THAT!

Someone who likes Arnie Hammer and Guy Ritchie films? Wow. That's a small overlap on a Venn diagram, isn't it?

Pocahontas (1995)
rewatch

So, this was the movie to succeed The Lion King? No wonder this film got so much hate at the time of release...
BUT It's admittedly sad that it had to be covered so much in the shadow of such masterpiece like The Lion King, but I understand the reactions, since Disney was raising the bar with every movie during this era (maybe except for The Rescuers Down Under).
This is definitely a weaker Disney movie in my opinion, but a weaker Disney movie is still rock solid entertainment. Despite flaws, I enjoy the journey to a new world, especially because the animation is stunning and once again groundbreaking and ever so creative. The setting is perfect for this kind of beauty and the character of Pocahontas is done well. Most of the other characters, though, are flat and without thought of reason or rationality - except for what is emptyhandedly force-feeded to them with hollow clichés that also haunts a lot of the script. The music is good, but the songs are weak in their writing, if you ask me - except for the one everyone know and love - Colors of the Wind. Amazing.
So yeah, if this hadn't been Disney, who even during weaker outings can present me with great animation, magic and that classic Disney feel (though a little less impactful here) I wouldn't have enjoyed this as much. I loved the vibe and balance between human and forest, especally when Pocahontas was alone. But because of a weak villain and empty stupid characters, the parts with the English people weren't that enjoyable. I kept wanting to return to Pocahontas... Ultimately, I guess I don't want to keep returning to Pocahontas as a movie though, but it's enjoyable enough on its own and I understand both the love and hate for this.
