Actors to watch for

Tools

I've always had this sort of sixth sense. Since I was about 11, I would notice actors/actressess in small roles, and automatically notice something that none of my friends could. To this day, I always say to my friends..."Remember __________'s name. They will be big soon." Something my friends are either annoyed at, or secretly envious of.

Usually I concentrate on one actors career and one actress, at a time.

My Female list.

The first person that I've ever "noticed" was Sandra Bullock in "Demolition Man". (Hey, I was around 11). I would always say "that girl in Demolition Man is going to get big".

Then in "The Mask", as soon as "Cameron Diaz" walked into the bank... I thought HEY! she's going to be huge. I remember saying to the people I talked to "remember that name" I was saying that for years, while she did tiny films... finally, after "Something About Mary" ...

When I first saw Chloe Sevigny in "Kids", I thought that, and still do. Then there was Heather Graham in "Boogie Nights" and Brittany Murphy after "Girl Interupted". Not bad Eh?

This post is getting long, I will wrap it up.

The Men.

For about 8 years, I kept saying... "That guy in True Romance, that guy that beats Patricia Arquette; he's going to be big." We now know him as Emmy winner Tony Soprano (James Gandolphini).

Blah, blah , blah.

The people I am watching for now are:

Lorenz Tate (since "Menace 2 Society")
Aron Eckhart (since "In The Company of Men")
Nick Stahl (since "Bully")
Peter Stormare (since "Fargo")
Elias Koteas (since "Exotica")
Dylan Baker (since "Happiness")
Balthazar Getty (since watching "Lord of the Flies" in grade 11)

Well here is a portion of my list. Let's see yours.

the two guys from boondock saints are i think on the verge of becoming stars, even though they aren't in many movies, boondock saints is still one of the most successful cult movies ever. and depending on how big boondock saints 2 is that should decide the rest of their careers. boondock saints is a GREAT ****ing movie btw. i think it definetly is unique and original in the way its shot from what i've seen.

Definitely Eric Bana. He had the best role in Black Hawk Down, he has proven himself as both profoundly comic and dead serious, and he is just about to get thrust into fame via The Hulk.

But if any of you have ever seen Chopper, you'll know that he is better than his character in Black Hawk and worth more than the comic book world of Hulk. The man is pure, as yet relatively truly untapped, gold.

I've got to see "Boondock Saints", I keep hearing things about it.
I agree with Eric Bana, he is going to be a huge star after the "Hulk". This will also be a major breakthrough year for Colin Farrel (after the "Recruit" and "Daredevil").

By the way, I just saw "Minority Report" (good movie), and I couldn't help noticing Peter Stormare (whom I've mentioned earlier), as the eye doctor. This is the first movie I've seen him in since I believe "Dancer in the Dark"

peter stormare is a star. just not a megastar. but he´s big in sweden.

I agree with everything SB said about Eric Banna.
He was a league about everyone everyone else in Black Hawk Down and awesome in Chopper.

Will be massive and deservedly so.

Put me in your pocket...
Queen Latifah played Matron 'Mama' Morton in Chicago and was wonderful. I hope it becomes a breakthrough for her and someone stands up and takes notice of her.

Good call on Bana. I agree completely. Orlando Bloom might be on his way, too...he doesn't seem to be resting on his laurels with the LOTR trilogy in the can.

I'm not old, you're just 12.
Sam Rockwell. Mark my words. I just saw Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, and He just knocked me on my @ss. He owned that movie, burying all the major "stars" (Drew Barrymore, George Clooney, Julia Roberts), and making the frustrated, misanthropic TV producer/CIA assasin (?) Chuck Barris into a compelling anti-hero. Rockwell won't be a Leading Man type, but he'll be a greatly admired actor, like Kevin Spacey, or Edward Norton....I truly believe this.

This is Sam Rockwell's most high-profile starring role to date and he hit a home run, but this is hardly the first time he's been an actor to make you sit up and notice him.

The other starring role you've got to see him in is the wierd coming-of-age flick Lawn Dogs (1997), where he plays a White Trash lawnboy who catches the fancy of a pre-teen girl living in the well-to-do neighborhood where he works. Before that, he was excellent along side John Turturro in the underseen Box of Moonlight (1996). You can also check him out in the should-be-better Indie hitman comedy Jerry & Tom (1998) with Joe Mantegna and William H. Macy. Nobody recognized his face but his talent was unmistakable as the scuzziest of the inmates on The Green Mile (1999), and that same year he stole the entire movie away from a cast of heavyweights as the paranoid & expendable Guy in Galaxy Quest (1999). In 2001 he more than held his own agianst even bigger guns in David Mamet's Heist, and earlier in 2002 his lead performance and Clooney's hysterical cameo were the only reasons to sit through the flat Welcome to Collinwood. Hell, he was even amusing in the witless Charlie's Angels (2000) flick, bringing a fun agility and slickness to his routine part as a baddie.

If anything, his chameleon-like ability to disapear into roles - which is obviously a strength, is also what's keeping him from being better known, much like Vincent D'Onofrio for the first chunk of his career, who was so brilliant for so long but few realized the same guy was Private Pyle in Full Metal Jacket, the Edgar Bug in Men In Black, Orson Welles in Ed Wood, and the doomed screenwriter in The Player. It took him years before people started matching a name to all those varied performances. Same thing has happened to Rockwell.

So yes, Rockwell is magnificent in Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, and its the kind of role that will garner even more attention for him. But he's been a "rising star" for years now. Next up for Sam is The Matchstick Men, directed by Ridley Scott and co-starring Nic Cage.
