Why Nobody Wanna See Original Films Anyway?

Tools

why there are no original films any more and all these remakes and sequels are terrible. people do not want to watch good films they want what they are familiar with or material/characters they remember nostalgically.

Take look at some of the films out now or coming out soon:
  • A-Team (TV adaptation)
  • Prince of Persia (video game adaptation)
  • Sex in the City 2 (TV adaptation, sequel)
  • Shrek 4 (sequel)
  • Toy Story 3 (Sequel)
  • Karate Kid (remake)
  • Iron Man 2 (comic book adaptation, sequel)
  • Twilight: Eclipse (TV adaptation, sequel)
  • Marmaduke (comic book adaptation)
  • Robin Hood (novel adaptation)
  • A Nightmare on Elm Street (remake)
  • Clash of the Titans (remake)
  • Diary of a Wimpy Kid (novel adaptation)

It's good that they are doing that, otherwise noone would be interested in the old stuff anymore.. Even though most remakes are terrible, you can't help it..

I got interested in the old 3:10 to Yuma after watching the new one...

I find you list a bit odd... Twilight - TV adaptation??
And what's wrong with Toy Story 3????

Just a crazy thought...

If anyone did in fact come up with something totally and completely original, no one would be able to comprehend it.

Now, I'm not justifying all of the **** Hollywood is putting out these days, but there really is no such thing as originality when it comes to the film industry. All we are is a compilation of experiences and if nothing we know is what we are being shown, it would have no meaning. What makes a good movie, what makes a good anything that is artistic, is taking a know idea and adding to it, changing it around. For example, there are to many movies, books, and songs about love. Love is an emotion. Being able to take that emotion and display it in different ways makes it feel "original".

You can be a movie buff. Even at 15.
Sequels are a touchy subject. Some of them suck. Just flat out suck. Some are kind of required i.e Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, etc. because they're based upon something already written prior to the screenplay. Movies like Toy Story aren't 'required' but highly encouraged by the public. In the case of Toy Story, Pixar is a great company. They have a fabulous track record and are well received by the public and this will continue until they prove this wrong.
I do hate when there are remakes. Like 'The Omen' for example. Gregory Peck was phenomenal in his role. Liev Schreiber didn't ruin the role of Robert Thorn, but he was certainly no where as close as Gregory Peck.

Technically, they're all "required" by the public, seeing as it's because they went and saw the film in the first place that they are making another. Or, in other words, the film makes money because enough people go and see it, therefore they make another one hoping to do it again.

It isn't the public that doesn't want to see original films. Hollywood doesn't want to make them and when they do, it's a tired retread of what they have done in the past. But the public doesn't want to see a bad original film and since the talent pool is pretty thin these days, sequels and remakes at least have a potential target audience you don't get with an original. There also aren't many big stars these days that can open a movie so pre sold properties from best selling novels, games, television, remakes, comic books, etc. becomes more important.

It's because in these times of financial woe, Hollywood goes for the 'safe' option. You're guaranteed a market for adaptations, sequels, and remakes- although remakes is a dodgy area because sometimes they're so dreadful (Fame) that people will just stick with the original and not bother to see the new one.

The only new thing is writers are now making remakes instead of jsut stealing and repackaging with a new skin. They're more honest than they used to be.

Good sequels are some of the most original material ever made. you can use the setup of the preceding movie, build off it, twist it. eg., dark knight. kill bill vol 2.

It's like with books and TV shows. Something succeeds, others pile on the bandwagon and do it to death, so any film which did well gets a sequel. Trouble is, often many of the best ideas were used in the original. For me there is no better example than the Bill and Ted films. First one excellent. Second one absolute rubbish.

I just watched Ice Castles(2010) which now has inspired me to see the original Ice Castles. In the previews of the re-make they showed some of the original.
