Films about Filmmaking

Tools

I am studying filmmaking and have been given an assignment wherein I have to design a film festival program to be run in my local city.

The idea I have chosen revolves around introducing the local youth to filmmaking. Over a period of about two weeks, numerous films about filmmaking would be screened, while filmmaking tutorials are held and those who wish to do so would be able to learn how to use the relevant equipment and learn some of the theory behind filmmaking.

Therefore I'd like to learn of any films (good ones! and nothing R-rated) that concern any aspect of filmmaking from screenwriting to shooting to sound recording.

I don't want these films to be necessarily educational, mostly to offer even a vague insight into the industry, and overall to be entertaining and inspiring.

The films I have on my list so far are : 8 1/2, Living in Oblivion and Adaptation. Yes, it is a small list.

All help will be appreciated. Thank you.

Bright light. Bright light. Uh oh.
The Bad and the Beautiful
Singin' in the Rain
Day for Night
Sunset Blvd.
Sullivan's Travels
Ed Wood (R-rated unfortunately)

I love me some Bowfinger. Wrote a review of it about two and a half years ago in my Overlooked Movies thread. Not that it's the best example of what the original poster is looking for, but it's one of my all-time favorite comedies.

Check out the existing thread, HERE.

Too bad about the R thing, because Swimming with Sharks would be a fun one.

However, this one is PG-13...

1989, Christopher Guest

Obviously a lot of those categories are going to have overlap, but I was trying to mix up the lists a bit, to show the wide variety out there. And those are just the good to great ones. There are lots more, and dozens where a Hollywood type or types figure in subplots but aren't the main focus (True Romance, for example).

But your rating restriction is going to eliminate many of the best and most interesting choices there.

Wow, Holden, that's some list. Bravo!

A stupid one I just caught on cable: Hijacking Hollywood.

Not a movie, but Project Greenlight was also interesting.

Thanks for your help guys. That should be plenty!

Consider it ANSWERED. :P

P.S. Ed Wood, which I happened to find for cheap in a department store earlier this evening and just watched, is only M rated in Australia (perhaps should have specified this, but I didn't expect anyone to go looking up international certifications). Yay.
