Why Do We Spend So Much Time On An Internet Message Board?

Because Monique loves you. And gives you attention, like the whore that she is

Altho seriously, you haven't paid any of us in ages. What's with that?

This for me is a distraction, the one I prefer most on the net. One day I will stop turning away and give up on the internet entirely, one day soon I think. But until then, here I am.

Ha, I told some people I posts on a message board and they threw me the "get a life" card.

I've actually posted a quite a few message boards, from small community members, to vast members. I like one somewhere in the middle, if there are too many people you don't really get to know them. Movieforums has a good size here, I tihnk we could lose a few lose stragglers though who are just one too many people to remember around here, I'm looking at you Iro.

Why do I post here......cause if I didn't my life might actually be productive.

Thus I am blaming movieforums for all my shortcomings.

Suspect's Reviews

By and large, I think we do it because physical proxmity just can't compete with the Internet when it comes to meeting like-minded people. We might all know some other cinephiles, but it's just not possible to be near as many people who love film as it is by posting here. Before the Internet, all you really had were yearly conventions and the like, and a lot of people obviously couldn't go to those sorts of things. So, I'd say one of the main reasons we post here is because we like talking about film with other moderately thoughtful people, and it's usually impossible to do that in the same way offline.

And, of course, as is the case with any website, it's incredibly convenient. You can have a conversation about movies that you can stop or start at any moment, depending on your mood. It automatically fits your schedule, whatever it is, because it's always here.

The longevity helps, too. Most forums die out within a year or two, tops. We've been around for almost nine years, which means the site you see today has been tweaked and honed after an absurd amount of trial and error. And it helps that the owner happens to be a programmer, too, rather than just a movie fan.

Beyond all that (and I'm gonna get a little mushy here)...I really think we have an exceptional group of people. MoFos who haven't spent too much time elsewhere might not be aware of it, but things around here are pretty unusual. We have wayyyyy fewer idiots than most boards, are far better moderated than almost every other movie forum, and have a way more diverse group of people than our relative harmony would suggest.

We all need a "place to go" - seriously - this is that place for many of us, and for many reasons. Are you here because you like movies? I have to say that everyone here can say yes to that, but that is not the catalyst that combines us, the thing that binds us is "a place to go". This is my place to go when I need to vent, or when I need to share, or when I need to escape, or when I need to become grounded. MOFO, is what it is, and what it is special. MOFO is family - plain and simple.

I can't tell if that's supposed to be an insult or a compliment.

On-topic, yeah, good place to talk about movies.

Not to mention talking about some boobies. Can't do that offline, without getting laughed at.

Yods, is right, it's incredibly easy to talk with like-minded people in a somewhat controlled environment. We're not on any time constraints here, and we're not all rusing to get the last word about something. You can have the same conversations off the board, but then you're talking over one another, or a distraction in the background.

Here, you're only distraction is The Shoutbox. That and boobies.

To me, it's nice to talk to people with similar interests as myself. While movies are diverse and I'm convinced that no two people are going to love the same set of movies, it makes it far more interesting to talk with people about cinema view points. I try and talk movies with people at work (it's about all the social life that I have) and they look at me like I'm a leper. Tell people that you collect movies and movie memorabilia and they say get a life. Coming here is like being accepted for who you are. I'm a guy that collects things (movies, music, books, cigars, tattoos, etc.). People I've found out generally don't accept different hobbies outside of their own.

As far as family, this is a good one. But I'm like the cousin that only shows up on occasion to functions. I do spend time on another forum as well (cigar.com). I like it because it's an even small community (last I checked I think that there are only 750 members and only 35 of us have a post count above 30).

I do like forums and I spend time on them because it's just nice to get to know people that think the same way you do.
