Bright light. Bright light. Uh oh.
HE WHO MUST DIE

Unfortunately, it's apparently too good a movie to have any images on the Net, so here's a blurb I found for a revival (from 2004):

The great Jules Dassin (Rififi, Night and the City) directs this newly restored classic about the good people of a Turkish-occupied Cretan village preparing the Easter Passion Play. When a group of refugees arrives (led by Rififi's Jean Servais), the biblical roles start to become real, to the consternation of local officials. With Pierre Vaneck as a stuttering Christ, and the riveting Melina Mercouri as Mary Magdalene. Adapted from Kazantzakis' novel The Greek Passion and shot on location in Crete. Directed by Jules Dassin, 1957, 35mm, 122 mins.
