How about the versions of Yojimbo?
A Fistful Of Dollars
Last Man Standing
I found others on IMDB but they seemed quite obscure, i (sadly) havnt seen Yojimbo but how do youse reckon thy compare? I liked the them

, based on the Kurosawa film Yojimbo.

Sorcerer, remake of Clouzot's The Wages Of Fear (Le Salaire De La Peur.)
I said it came close, not better.

It's obvious to me why remakes aren't better than the originals, lack of originality.

Another remake that is better than the original is Reservior Dogs.

I'm sorry, Reservior Dogs really isn't based on City On Fire(Long Hu Feng Yun.)

Yojimbo is mentioned but then how about Seven samurai - The Magnificent Seven Here I liked the remake more I must say

Also the recent The Italian Job was a remake or was atleast based a little on the first one (haven't seen the original).

Ringu was far better and more scary than The Ring

Same as many a true fan I generally despise remakes. With that said there are exceptions to every rule. So a few slip threw the cracks that are worthy to bare the name they have ripped off. NB****12 ANGRY MEN is the only one worth viewing of the main list.******

Some worthy remakes IMO:

Hitchcock remade several of his films with fantastic results- eg: 39 STEPS, MAN WHO KNEW TO MUCH etc

WILLARD- love both the original and the remake.

THE THING- Both remake and original are gold.

INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS- Phillip Kaufman did an oK remake and Abel Fererra provided an interesting angle to rethink it but the original is the one.

THE FLY- love both versions.

SCARFACE- more an overhaul than a remake either way I love both.

MAGNIFICENT 7- Adore Seven Samurai and als0o its western counterpart.

FISTFUL OF DOLLARS- Likewise I adore both the eastern and western interpretations.

ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13- RIO BRAVO and its remake EL DORADO are both great fun and I also enjoy Carpenters reworking of the idea.

Planet of the Apes
i liked the original, but i thought the ending to the second was more like the book)

Ocean's 11
original one was better, although i enjoyed the second

Psycho
only saw the original

Titanic
preferred a night to remember over cameron's although his background history was right on the mark...

Peter Pan
i loved mary martin...

Hamlet
original

Romeo and Juliet
original

101 Dalmations
original

12 Angry Men
original

Italian Job
original was fun..i liked both

Time Machine
original

Sabrina
both although i liked the remake a little better than the first

three musketeers
preferred the 70's richard lester versions

So many good movies, so little time.
Saw Magnificent 7 tonight which I hadn't seen in a long time. Although I think it was a decent movie it suffered greatly in comparison to Seven Samurai in my opinion.

Also I think Yojimbo is in a different league than Fistful of Dollars.

Cleopatra (1934) - original

Last of the Mohicans (1992) - remake. Although I liked 1936 Randolph Scott version I think this is my favorite remake.

HellboyUnleashed's Avatar
May The Forks be With Us
Planet Of The Apes-Remake
Oceans 11-Remake
those are really the only two remakes i know of that i like
the only other remake that i can think of that has a different title than the original is Rat Race which i though wa hilarious and so was the original- It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. which is a great movie

Put me in your pocket...
Just bumping this thread up.

The Producers (1968) vs. (2005)
I liked the remake better than the original. However, I enjoyed it on stage even more.

Discussion point?

I do wonder whether the Western-Samurai crossover days were a more beneficial time of 'remakes'. Both styles seemed to influence each other beneficially - and i'd say both of those films stand up well on their own terms.

There seemed to be something recursive going on then, which i don't quite feel now. I'm sure Ju-on was influenced by Western horror for example, but was the remake returning the favour (aside from hiring the same director)? I guess there is a similar skill-n-idea sharing thing going on - but it just doesn't feel as 'raw' and reformed/re-projected as those projects do.

(Incidently, for me Yojimbo gets my vote - but only just [and partially coz of the silly 'wood-block' music, which just ain't a good reason] ).

Only seen the remake unfortunately, which left me kind of cold. Think i would've enjoyed the god-toying and humanity-destroying(and rejoining) of Tarkofsky's original, if it's anything like his Stalker

I apologise for starting that sentence without having an ending.

Incidently, The Manchurian Candidate - i prefer the old one.

[Altho i'm just guessing - ain't seen the new. And i refuse to apologise ]

Planet of the Apes- original
The original just had more feeling

Ocean's 11- remake
Stylish and funny

Psycho- original
C'mon...do I have to say why?

Texas Chainsaw Massacre- original
Much more disturbing, real, and schocking than the embarassing remake

Titanic- remake
I actually liked every second of the remake up until the boat sank because that's when the movie sucked.

Peter Pan- Never seen it

Hamlet- Never seen it

Romeo and Juliet- remake (DiCaprio and Daines version)
Stylish and the Shakespeare line-by-line was great

101 Dalmations- original
It's a classic. The remake was just a dumb video for little kids to watch when they went on a field trip...

12 Angry Men- never seen it

Shaft- original
Shaft was way more, well, "Shaft", in the original

Planet of the Apes - ORIGINAL!!! No question about it...Tim Burton has always been a favorite director of mine, but he butchered a classic. The remake was an insult to everyone who ever enjoyed the original. It became a big budget action film as opposed to the inciteful, exciting, and very entertaining political and social commentary that the original was. The remake had the wrong kind of spirit and it was a disgrace.

Ocean's 11 - Remake

Psycho - Original. WTF was Gus Van Sant on when he made this pile? For that matter, what was Vince Vaughn smoking as well as William H. Macy and Anne Heche trying to fill the shoes of Janet Leigh is just insulting.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre - Original

Titanic - Neither

12 Angry Men - Original

The Parent Trap - Neither

The Mark of Zorro - Remake

Father of the Bride - Remake

The Three Muskateers - Neither

there is no pattern, the whole competition between originals and remakes it extremely ambiguous and subjective.

The best sequels I have seen that were better than the first was for a few dollars more and the good the bad and the ugly... better than the first in my opinion anyway

not many good sequels out there...spiderman 2 was pretty good, both spiderman are only good the first time you see it, otherwise both boring
