WORST films made from books

I don't DISlike him, but the dude gets too much credit. Under-rated? Don't you see how many people sing his praises on these very forums day in and day out? I've seen several people here describe him using words like amazing, superb, or some other nice big adjective. I see him as a good actor, but I don't see him as so obviously great. Ditto for Robert Downey Jr., who's good, and obviously talented...but I don't see those two as natural-born actors oozing talent. I really don't.

Is it me, or does Chris always seem just flabberghasted when others don't share his opinion?

Not picking, just making an observation.

Oh, far from it: I'm very, very used to it by now. I just argue my case with vigor, that's all. Not so much disbelief, as confidence. Probably comes off arrogant as hell, though, eh?

Not so much arrogant, Chris, as bewildered that we don't think the same as you. You seem like a smart guy, one would think that you are quite aware that folks might not share your views. Your attitude when someone doesn't is one of shock and disbelief!

I'm certainly not knocking you for this, as I have the same reaction.

Ok, now I'm going to goad you, kind sir: I saw "Unbreakable" and thought it was just ok. A mediocre Hollywood film that came far from showcasing the stellar talent of its stars. A neat concept that fell short.

I come in peace,
rhonda

I don't know where you're seeing shock and disbelief, to be perfectly honest with you. Like I said before, I think that I speak as if I'm 100% positive, which in turn can miply, to some people, a disbelief that anyone can believe anything else. It's not a bewilderment of what the other person is saying, it is a firmness in my disagreement.

I am disturbingly aware of the crazy views people have at times. I've been getting myself into pointless political (or religious) arguments for several years now. I've seen it all...from people who think maybe murder shouldn't be illegal, to others who think that we should try to model our species after The Borg. And no, I'm not kidding.

As for "Unbreakable:" I loved it because the concept was great, the score was UNBELIEVABLE, and the acting was top-notch. The whole look of the film was amazing, too, and if you think about it broadly, it had pretty much the same underlying message/goal as "The Sixth Sense," even though it completely stands on its own. I'll bet you'd be amazed at how many subtle things were slipped into that movie.

How did you even draw the connection between these two?! I've never heard anyone on these forums *sing praises* for Robert Downey Jr. ever. I liked his work in Home for the Holidays, I thought he was very convincing as the low-life, prankster brother-type, but other than that...he's not even in the same legue as Depp.

I'm not going to try to convince you that Depp is great. I know he is and that's all that matters. As far as people on these forums praising him, that's hardly THE CRITICS, who certianly don't do it often enough.

Sorry to be digressing this thread.

I love John Cusack. I think he's a brilliant comedian. He's so real. Johnny Depp just doesn't have the same 'real guy' feel that I dig in actors, although he is a very good one. I would have turned off "Blow" halfway through had he not given such a good performance.

Cusack was excellent in "High Fidelity", but Jack Black made the whole show for me. He has become a favorite of mine. I can't wait to see "Shallow Hal".

I still like Robert Downey, Jr. a LOT more than Johnny Depp (mainly for Chaplin; I haven't seen Depp in a role that I actually thought was phenomenal).

All you've seen of Downey's work is Home for the Holidays?

I like Johnny Depp. I thought Sleepy Hollow was great fun. Donnie Brasco was an excellent film;
As for worst films from books, three immediately spring to my mind; Battlefield Earth, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and Breakfast of Champions

I'm not old, you're just 12.
Hearts in Atlantis was pretty horrible. Another bad Stephen King non-adaption. But it's also tempting to say Battlefield Earth, but that's like jumping up and down on a cripple. That wasn't even a good book.

not a book exactly.

Judge Dredd

there are so many things wrong with this film.
But the one thing that sums up the true and utter disregard for the original content is having the costumes designed by Gianni Versace. the mayor of wrongtown.
I was sick.

I thought Hearts in Atlantis was wonderful. Explain yourself.

I won't go near a copy of Battlefield Earth. I saw the movie, that's enough for me.

Bad adaptation: Jim Carrey's Grinch. Wow, that was dreadful.

Lolita, the Stanly Kubrick version. I don't see what's so good about him. All his movies from books were massacred...

'The Beach' was another book-movie conversion that got botched horribly.
It wasn't that the movie was terrible, its just that the book was so much better!

Yeah too bad Kubrick is a genius.
