Books you would like to see made into films

Tools

sullivan's travels.....i really liked it...funny, witty and my introduction to Veronica lake. i have a feeling that there are a ton of (younger) people who's only idea of Veronica Lake is Kim Basinger's character's version of the starlet from L.A.Confidential (heh, heh).

i mentioned a couple of books way early in this thread and i will second my vote for Paul Auster's New York Trilogy.

i thought i'd heard that Conferderacy Of Dunces is being made into a movie!!

I'd love to see lots of Auster's work brought to the screen by a strong director. I'd probably nominate The New York Trilogy first too. In the hands of Scorsese or Soderbergh, I'd probably pass-out from the anticipation. If only.

Patti, have you ever seen The Music of Chance (1993)? Excellent film, and a very good adaptation of the novel. It stars Mandy Patinkin, James Spader, M. Emmet Walsh, Charles Durning and Joel Grey. One of my favorite flicks nobody has seen.

Smoke and Blue in the Face weren't based on any of Auster's books of course, but they are both fantastic and addictive. The film he wrote and directed back in '98, Lulu on the Bridge, has some nice stuff in it, but the ending is pretty weak and convoluted. Still worth a look, if you're a Paul Auster nut.

i did indeed see The Music of Chance and similarly liked it and the performances of named actors.....and i know of his Lulu On the Bridge movie but haven't seen it. i WILL check out Blue in the Face - didn't know about that one, but i saw Smoke a few years back... i wish my memory were better because i don't remember anything but Harvey Keitel in his shop and William Hurt! Man, what was i smokin'??
i'm thrilled that you know of all the movies (et.al.) that i bring up- and i will follow through on many of your recommendations.

You should see Smoke again.

Blue in the Face was co-directed by Auster, with Smoke's Wayne Wang. Auster scripted Smoke, but Blue in the Face came out of improvisational sessions they all had in rehearsing. It is a sort of loose sequel to Smoke, with the same Brooklyn cigar store as the central location. William Hurt and Forest Whitaker don't reprise their roles, but Harvey Keitel is back as Auggie, as are many of the other actors. Joining them this time are Michael J. Fox, Lily Tomlin, Jim Jarmusch, Lou Reed, Mira Sorvino, Rosanne and Madonna in vignettes. Good stuff. I recommend watching Smoke and Blue in the Face as a double feature.

Now With Moveable Parts
Oh good God NOOOOOOOO!!!!

I hate what Disney does to good stories! Look at what they did to the Hunchback of Noter Dame....Agh! They make everything into this sugar-coated, easy-to-swallow, kid-friendly...crap!

If they handle the Chronicals of Narnia, you can bet, it'll have their fingerprints all over it. It won't even taste like C.S. Lewis anymore. Disney will just slap it in a box and have it shipped out just in time for some holiday...and you can bet, McDonalds will have little Aslan toys for the kiddies...BARF!!!!!!!!!

I can live with Aslan toys. Merchandising and such is irrelevant to me IF the movie itself is good and true to the spirit of the book. Like I said: Dreamworks, baby. They're really great with storytelling...I hope they hop in somehow. I really do. Harry hopes for the same, apparently. We're both DW nuts.

Now With Moveable Parts
Well any kind of nuts is better than Disney nuts.

Beware the Moon
Isn't it about time that Brian Lumley's superb Necroscope novels were made into movies. Such cleverly written, ingeniously psychological and chillingly horrific work would be phenomenal on big screen.......instead of the current trend of remaking and generally ruining classic films. (ie: Planet of The Apes)

Stephen King's Desperation. It was freaky book. I actually heard rumors that it may become a movie. We'll see.

Sir David Lean did a film production of Great Expectations in 1946 that is excellent and still beautiful and remarkable today. Track it down sometime if you've never seen it. Lean's 1948 Oliver Twist is also excellent and timeless.

And yes, agreed, the '98 modernized version with Hawke, Gwyneth, Anne Bancroft and Bobby DeNiro was horrible, despite some of the most beautiful film photography you'll ever likely see (by Emmanuel Lubezki).

Hey Holden was it Guy Green who did the Photography for Oliver Twist just wondering if you know of hand cause it was beautiful and had some very extreme lighting in it.

also In this awesome docum called Visions of Light it appaers at the begining and was an inspiration to another great cinematographer Ernest Dickerson

Yeah, I know it was Guy Green - and not just because those are his intense Twist images that open the documentary Visions of Light: the Art of Cinematography.

weird while I was editing you were typing the same thing I was writing.

I think the one (or one of a series) that i have been waiting a long time for is William Gibsons 'Neuromancer' the book is admittedly a bit cheesy now but the ideas are there! Chris Cunningham was to be doing a script treatment with one of the studios which i think held a lot of promise. An illustrator (2000ad) and video clip director (Aphex Twin/ Madonna) i reckon he would have alot to bring to the film.

Bring on the intelligent sci-fi movie!

Rainbow Six by Tom Clancy

Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke. I haven't read it, but the plot looks amazing. If this was done by the right people, it could very well be a masterpiece. Would have a 2001 feel to it (Clarke was the co-author of 2001, aswell).

Oh yeah, and I'd love to see a Tomorrow, When The War Began movie.

And I can't forget The Perks Of Being A Wallflower, either.

\m/ Fade To Black \m/
I would love all of the Discworld novels be made in to movies! That would be amazing, there have been two storys made in to two part films for the tv, The Hogfather and The Colour Of Magic. They are both fantastic and I would love all the other books to be made.

Also I think Marylin Manson's Autobiography should be made into a movie as it shows how messed up his childhood was and what lead to him being as he is today!
