The Roses - remake of The War of the Roses

Tools

Seriously? You think original films coming out today are getting the same promotional plugging and airtime as your supposed profitable remakes?
Supposed profitable remakes? Do you want to look at the actual numbers, to see if they're supposed hits?

Here's the top 10 hits for 2024:

Each and every one is a sequel, remake or adaptation of something that was already a hit.

That is the reason studios keep churning out remakes and sequels. Because it's the only thing that makes any serious money in any kind of reliable way.

If you just want to watch the original films, there's nothing wrong with that - watch what you enjoy. But let's not pretend that studios aren't just giving moviegoers what the majority of them are responding to in big enough numbers

That's sad.
To be precise, there's only 1 or 2 remakes in that list. The rest are all sequels.
Let's not pretend that this is not a miserable state for the movie industry.
And the movie-goers are a big part of the problem.

I just hope the movie industry gets a shakeup, a revolution of sorts. Somebody fresh and original like Quentin Tarantino to come around and kick it in the nuts.

But it ain't about how hard ya hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done!” ~ Rocky Balboa

Anything that is a sequel, prequel, or remake takes away the space for original films, right?

Sequels, prequels, spin-offs...
Yes, all that crap is taking away space for original films.
Producers don't want to take risks.
And movie-goers have such a low attention span thanks to the age of smartphones and instant gratification with apps like TikTok, Instagram....etc.

We are doomed.

I try not to buy too much into the "doom and gloom" mindset. If there's currently a trend of doing remakes and sequels instead of original films, it may be an economic thing which will change in the future.

Do you see any of the original movies in theaters right now doing really solid business?
Box office numbers are absolutely no indication of a film's quality, or whether a remake is any good or not.

Popularity isn't quality.

'I'm still here' has reportedly made $40m on a $1m budget.

Not that it has any bearing on whether it is any good or not.

As long as people overwhelmingly continue to prefer sequels/prequels/remakes over original material, we're going to continue watching the studios put out more of those, and sadly, there doesn't seem to be any data (at least not as far as I can see) that indicates this trend is likely to reverse any time soon...

And as far as this particular remake is concerned, I would say I am inclined to trust the screenwriter of The Favourite, Cruella and Poor Things. I think he's shown he can turn out some solid material.

I saw this last night. Long, but powerful. Lead actress exceptional. Lordy, what man does to man.
