I must admit that I thought Nikki Glaser was an unusual choice for host for this ceremony. She looked incredible. She did get some pretty good celebrity jabs in that almost rivaled Ricky Gervais. She gave Ben Affleck a wicked shot that dropped by jaw. Loved her comment on Timothee Chalamet’s eyelashes. Glaser is also the first person I have ever seen do an Adam Sandler impression. She made a joke at Harrison Ford's expense that I don't think he understood. She made a joke about cheekbones that fell totally flat, but overall, an impressive debut for an award show host. Her halfway through the ceremony update was cute, but it just padded running time. And on to the specifics:
BEST ACCEPTANCE SPEECHES: Zoe Saldana, Jean Smart, The guy from Shogun (I couldn't possible spell or pronounce his name), Collin Ferrell (loved his shout out to Beta Max), Jodie Foster, Demi Moore, Jon M Chu, Richard Gaad, Paul W Downs
WORST ACCEPTANCE SPEECHES: Director Brady Korbet loses points for having his acceptance speech on his phone. Anyone who follows my award threads knows that I hate that. And could someone tell me what he was talking about with Aubrey Plaza?, The songwriters who won for Emilia Perez, they brought the already overlong show to a complete halt.
BEST PRESENTER BANTER: Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, Kathy Bates and Anthony Ramos, Seth Rogen and Catherine O'Hara, Vin Diesel, Awkwafina and Melissa McCarthy
WORST PRESENTER BANTER: Kate Hudson and Mindy Kaling, Jeff Goldblum and Michelle Yeoh
OVERALL BEST SURPRISE: Andrew Garfield speaking in his gorgeous and sexy English accent, which I have never heard before
BEST REACTION TO WINNING: Zoe Saldana (She almost made me cry), Colin Ferrell, Adrien Brody
MOST SURPRISING WIN(S): Best Screenplay for Conclave...though I haven't seen the film, I thought this one was going to A Real Pain; Ali Wong, I love her but I didn't think she had a chance beating out Jamie Foxx, Seth Meyer, and Adam Sandler, Wicked winning the award for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement
RANDOM WTF OBSERVATION: What was all that stuff on Kieran Culkin's arm?
MOST CONSPICUOUS ABSENCE: Jeremy Allen White was surprisingly not there to pick up his award for The Bear
BEST DRESSED: Zoe Saldana, Kate Hudson, Jean Smart, Ariana DuBose, Demi Moore, Jessica Gunning, Morris Chestnut, Nicole Kidman (as always), Sharon Stone, Miles Teller, Anya Taylor-Joy, Colin Ferrell, Seth Rogen, Anthony Mackie, Michael Keaton, Michelle Yeoh. Cynthia Erivo, Hannah Einbinder, Zoe Kravitz, Viola Davis, Gal Gadot, Salma Hayek, Cate Blanchett, Eddie Redmayne (a bold choice but I liked it)
WORST DRESSED- Dwayne Johnson, Kieran Culkan (he knew he was going to win, he could have put a little more thought into his wardrobe), Kathy Bates, Jennifer Coolidge, Ali Wong, Catherine O'Hara, Jodie Foster, Kerry Washington, Melissa McCarthy, Colman Domingo, Adriana Grande, Jeremy Strong
