Oh man ....betcha cant pick just one. By no means a complete list...

By Genre:
Comedy...Blazing Saddles
Drama...Do the Right Thing, Wings of Desire, Romper Stomper, Casablanca, Casino, One False Move
Sci Fi...Blade Runner, Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back, Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan, 2001, 2010 (what can I say, its a Hellen Mirren thing), Starship Troopers, Alien, Cube, PI, A Boy and His Dog, Zardoz
Horror...Re-Animator, Suspiria, Nightmare on Elm Street, Cronos, Dead Alive
Fantasy...Legend, LOTR trilogy, The Sword and the Sorcerer, Excalibur

Uncatorizable or Misc...
Salo (no, I'm not some psycho chester type, only saw it once and that was enough, lifechanging in the worst way but glad I saw it)
Aria...Panned as fluff it left a MAJOR mark on me, best next to Casino of the Vegas flicks.
Ghost in the Shell...WOW an film that made me wax philosophical and an ANIMATED one at that.
American Pop
Fulci's Zombie and The Beyond, eye gouging at its finest!
Un chien andalou...see above
Any Cronenberg, esp The Brood and Existenz

Documentaries...
Any Michael Moore, often misunderstood as a anti-gun statement BFC was brilliant in exposing our violent nature using guns as the central metaphor.
My Best Feind, Klaus Kinski HOLY S***
Outfoxed
Metallica:SKoM
Divine Trash Love John Waters!
Anything by Les Blank, especially Gap Toothed Women and Burden of Dreams, more interesting than the film Fitzcoraldo was the documentary ABOUT it!
The Kids are Alright
Sick: The Life & Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist, I cannot possibly say enough prasing this film, the complexity of the characters, the way it makes the twisted seem commonplace WOW! Fair warning though, weak stomachs need not apply.

Political Films...
Manchurian Candadate (original) sure its a red scare film but holy hell is it effective!
Bob Roberts, say what you will about Tim Robbins political beliefs but this film, flawed as it is perfectly Illustrates the methods the far-right uses to stur hatred and discontent and the utter complicity of the left in allowing them to get away with it.
Mr Smith Goes to Washington, average joe makes good.

Thrillers/Crime Dramas/misc Action...
Manhunter...Despite the 'boom in the shot scene, an amazingly scarry and disconcerting ride, and a star turn by Brian Cox as Hannabal Lecter, William Peterson has never been so good...
Well except in...To Live and Die in LA
Ronin, one of the most underrated films of the last 20 years, Period!

Well``when talking about favourite movies, there will always a image of<Casablanca>
<Forrest Gump> <Notting Hill><God father>~~~~flash through my head. But if I've got to find out which one I like most, the answer would be<Sleepless in Seattle>.The answer is really simple, the songs, love, magic, romance~~everything in that movie,I can just say I won't get rid of them for my whole life. The movie really brings me into a magical world that love exsits everywhere. As if I was Tom Hanks, and Meg Ryan is the person I am going to marry meet on top of empire state building, the feeling of that moment is so great. There is really quite a few words to describe it, just feel it!

I don't think its possible for a true lover of film to dennote a single film as his/her favorite.

Every movie I have ever seen for good or ill has left me with something even if its just $10 lighter in the wallet

My favorite movies would probably have to be Sin City, Kill Bill Vols. 1 & 2, Constantine, Night of the Living Dead, Day of the Dead, Dawn of the Dead, The Matrix, and Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas.

Well, my favorite movie is "The Safety of Objects".
It's an indie film, not many people saw it, and yet, I found it to be very inspiring. The movie is about four families living in an all American suburb, when a car accident leaving one teenager in coma, turns over their lives, and combines their lives together. The movie reminds you of the important things in life (not your car or your surround system or stuff like that) - which is the people you love. After seeing this movie, and falling in love with it, I bought the book by A.M. Homes, and it's actually a collection of short stories, that in the movie - combine. The book is really great too (I know you movie lovers are not so keen on reading books), and I recommend it whether you see the movie or not:

Let me know what you thought of this movie...

Love most, but especially the Monty Python and Lord of the Rings films!

my favourite movie would be todo sobre mi madre ( all about my mother ) ...i've watched it 5 times...the dialogues and the spanish language...amaizing...( i'm not going to mention the obvious favorites, like LOTR and the matrix (part1))
