Round 13:

1. Volbeat - Doc Holliday (I'm your Huckleberry)
2. Kero Kero Bonito - Rock 'n' Roll Star (Fun and joyful. I also love that finale)
3. The Alan Parsons Project - Don't Answer Me (1984 had a lot of good songs, didn't it?)
4. Rush - Red Sector A (Grace Under Pressure is one of my favorite albums of theirs)
5. Twisted Sister - Ride to Live, Live to Ride (If I ever learn how to drive a motorcycle, I'm blasting this song first)
6. Judas Priest - Turbo Lover
7. Yeule - Pocky Boy
8. Wet Leg - Wet Dream
9. Miles Davis - Rated X (too strident and anxiety inducing for me to enjoy, but it still makes me want to check out more of his later work)
10. Maroon 5 ft. Christina Aguilera - Moves Like Jagger
11. Joe Stamm - Flower of the Everglades (ft. Charles Wesley Godwin)

Round 13:
9. Miles Davis - Rated X (too strident and anxiety inducing for me to enjoy, but it still makes me want to check out more of his later work)

On the Corner is probably the one to check out. It's still pretty out there, but it wasn't recorded in the cocaine Hell that Rated X's accompanying album was clearly made in

Been away from computers all day and lost track of time. When does this round end? Tonight or tomorrow night?

Really strong round. Even the Miles Davis' song has a lot of interesting/crazy stuff in it that I liked. The "Pocky Boy" song is not bad, but it just feels repetitive.

Also, poor Karen Dalton. It's clear by how badly she does in these contests, and all the stank face her voice gives everyone I know, why she died penniless and borderline homeless. Was ahead of her time, ahead of our time, all the while simultaneously seeming to be transmitting her voice from a hundred years ago. Her voice is always sure to short circuit our silly internet ranking games.

She was great, one of the best even though she would have probably hated me and my applause, just like she seemingly hated everything and everyone else. Just the way I like it.
I just recently started getting into that Greenwich village early folk scene, and Dalton's voice made her an immediate standout for all the qualities you elegantly described. I knew that Dylan has cited her as his favorite singer, but I knew nothing about her life or career until just now watching Karen Dalton: In My Own Time, a documentary that's set to expire from the Criterion Channel at the end of the month. The film is very by-the-numbers, filled with talking heads giving us an oral cliff notes of her life, interspersed with archival footage from her personal life and performances, and narrated bits from her poetry. Dalton comes across as too intensely private and enigmatic for the film to peel back any layers beneath the surface of her undeniable genius as an interpreter of songs, but it was fascinating and depressing to learn about her ups and downs, her life and death. It seems her musical integrity was so strong that it was essentially an albatross to her career.

As sometimes happens during these tournaments, I buy a couple of things I hear a song from.

So kudos to Colter Wall's "Western Swing and Waltzes" and GOAT's "World Music". You've found a forever home with me.
Awesome. Colter Wall has been one of the most authentic voices in country for awhile now. Western Swing and Waltzes is probably the album from him that I've listened to the most. Great stuff.

Goat was a serendipitous discovery courtesy of the Apple Music algorithm. I heard "Run to Your Mama" for the first time a day or two before nominating it. I've since listened to the album two or three times. "Run to Your Mama" is a bit of an outlier, but the worldly influences throughout the album make for a fun listen -- especially if you're into dancing naked around bonfires while high on psilocybin. It strikes a nice balance between modern accessibility and primordial weirdness. Hope you dig it.
