I saw a short live-action film 10 or so years ago about a husband and wife living in a cabin in the woods. It is wintertime and their daughter had died and both parents were grieving. I think he worked driving a tractor-thing that is used to manicure ski slopes, but I'm not sure of that. Anyhow there is a magical animal, I think a mink or weasel, but I'm also not sure. Their daughter is miraculously returned to them at the end of the film.

No, this short film that I remember had no horror elements whatsoever. It was sad to begin with, but sweet and sentimental, and was no more than 15-20 minutes long.
IIRC the husband was starting to drink but he was drinking alone and wasn't abusive towards his wife. They had grown distant since the death of their child and he was drowning his grief in drink, but IIRC he drank later in the evenings after his job and chores were finished.
I finally remembered the name: The Snow Child (1998). I can't believe I remembered it -- my mind isn't that good anymore.

If you can find the time, maybe you could update the IMDB listing for the film.
