Boxing Helena (1993) 4.5/10

Now I know why Jennifer Lynch (the great David’s daughter) never got a crack at the big time again until 2008’s surveillance, a full 15 years.............. It wasn’t as weird a film as I imagined it would be, I was expecting a lot of surrealism, it was just a woman in a chair with no legs. It did pick up towards the end but by then it was far to late, I really must watch decent movie after the last two pieces of dross.

Der Samurai (2014)

A odd German horror fantasy that seems to hint for a twist which never comes (which makes it much weirder actually). A soft and shy police feeds a wolf, then comes the sword wielding transvestite and eventually quite a few bodies. We even get to see an erect penis. It more or less holds together for its short duration.

I just watched The Prince of Egypt. I can't believe this one. I cried like ten times.

Zodiac (2007)

I might have watched this too late at night, because I found myself drifting off during times. Its a little over 2.5 hours, and a lot of the scenes blend together a bit on how they go about discovering clues and investigating leads. It was still a good movie, and the acting was terrific from the likes of Gyllenhaal, Downey, Ruffalo, etc.

Mortal Engines

This was very Lord Of The Ringsy in many ways which was fine but it felt much more CGI heavy and got me to thinking what a big budget steampunk movie would be like if using all real sets, props etc because nothing in this movie looked very real and it also could have done with a few more grown ups in it.. best thing was the character of Shrike which felt like Peter Jackson doing his orc thing and that was all good for me.

Do you know what a roller pigeon is, Barney? They climb high and fast, then roll over and fall just as fast toward the earth. There are shallow rollers and deep rollers. You can’t breed two deep rollers, or their young will roll all the way down, hit, and die. Officer Starling is a deep roller, Barney. We should hope one of her parents was not.

Crimes of Passion (1984)

Genuinely weird offering from Ken Russell. Supposed to be some sort of erotic thriller comedy? In truth its a complete mess! That's not to say that there aren't some good points. Kathleen Turner is very sultry and Anthony Perkins is absolutely manic as the man of god with more than a bible in his bag! Bizarrely, some of the direction reminded me alot of "Querelle" by Fassbinder. Warning: the Rick Wakeman soundtrack will make your ears bleed

Avengers: Endgame (2019)

I enjoyed this movie, but there are some problems I had with it. I'm still on the fence about whether I liked this more than Infinity War. I was unfortunately spoiled on a big scene from this film thanks to some asshat on facebook,

Tony Stark snapping his fingers to turn Thanos and his army to dust at the end. Tony definitely channeled Batman in that scene for sure lol

but despite that when I saw the scene in context with the movie it was well done. I was emotional at times in this movie which was a first for me. I've always enjoyed the Marvel movies to an extent but I never felt very invested in it. Looking forward to what Marvel brings next. Although I could of done without the

Girl Power scene when Captain Marvel gets her hands on the gauntlet. Very forced imo and really took me out of the movie. We get it there's a lot of female avengers we already know that they are all capable this scene felt very out of place. Unnecessary. Captain America saying "Avengers Assemble" when the rest of the avengers that were brought back finally arrived was strong enough on its own.

Part of me is very glad I skipped out on Captain Marvel because she was easily the worst part of this movie. Call me what you want the scene was just very unnecessary.

I wonder what life is like in the timeline where Superman Lives actually did get made and whether or not Nic Cage still went ahead with making this. Ah, who am I kidding, he definitely did.

Tokyo Story (1953)

I got inspired to watch this movie after watching people go see that Avengers movie which reminded myself that I have not watched a truly great movie in years and that I should take my time and revisit an old favorite of mine to remember how a great movie really is. So how was revisiting it? Well, I was a bit scared actually, of the possibility that it would not measure up to my past impressions of the movie. However, I was pleasantly surprised to rediscover this movie after watching it for the first time in almost exactly 6 years.

Tokyo Story is the definition of a classic movie. It is about the most fundamental elements of life: family, time and the sad fact that interpersonal connections do not lasy forever. This movie is truly devastating: it expressed the anguish and sadness in a truly unforgettable manner.

The fact that characters do not easily express all their emotions makes the movie feel much more authentic and hence powerful: in real life we never act like movie characters instead we are more reserved like Noriko, one of the most noble characters in the history of film.

The visual style of the movie is also tremendous: the result of decades of work by Ozu in improving his particular style. The movie feels like a piece of minimalistic visual music, purely enjoyable on its audiovisual experience. It is also a good movie to use to learn Japanese since the characters speak very simple sentences.

Avengers: Endgame (2019)

I feel less like I watched this movie and more like I was battered in the face with it, especially the final hour. I really wanted this to be the “amazing” “satisfying” epic the critics were calling it. I was so ready to watch that movie. In the end, while it was immersive and emotional and thrilling, I couldn’t exactly call it satisfying.

There’s plenty of fun, some nice nods to different things, moments that had me awestruck and some devastating emotional moments. I spent pretty much the last half an hour with tears in my eyes for a variety of reasons; any film that can have such an emotional effect has to be worth something. It’s an epic feat to pull off something like this, the culmination of so many other movies, with so many different characters and they almost, almost pull it off.

There were things about it that really, really bothered me though and I'm not sure how much the bad outweighs the good in terms of the rating. For now, I'll go with a tentative

Spoilery breakdown of my thoughts on Endgame

John Carter (Andrew Stanton, 2012)

Oddly enjoyable considering it has a million and one Jar Jar Binks

I saw a chunk of it recently (never seen the whole film) and I noted that Lynn Collins' experience with Shakespeare would have come in very handy for the dialogue. I found that Mark Strong stuck out like a sore thumb – great as he always is – as did Dominic West, so it was difficult to see them as the characters they were playing unfortunately. Weirdly I didn't find James Purefoy as jarring; maybe he was more relaxed .

I like early science fiction a lot so I was very surprised to find out that Edgar Rice Burroughs had written some, along with his more famous Tarzan (pretty sure I knew that before this film was made).

I forgot all about John Carter (2012), until just now. Surprisingly I liked it. It kind of reminded me of the Conan movies crossed with the 1st Star Wars film.

There's been a number of sci-fis made from Edgar Rice Burroughs' novels. Most notable At the Earth's Core (1976) and The Land That Time Forgot (1975) and remade in (2009). There was also a Princess of Mars (2009) another John Carter type movie, with the adult movie actress Traci Lords, (but no porn in it). I watched a bit of that one but shut it off as it bored me.

So do I, there were a lot of great sci fi novels written in the first half of the 20th century and many have been made into sci fi movies.

BTW there's a Science Fiction Hall of Fame starting up right now, and anyone can join up until May 3rd...after that the movies selected are revealed and the members start watching them.

As a kid I did read Burrough's Mars series and liked it quite a bit. Never been into Tarzan that much though (even read the first Tarzan book again couple of years ago but found it still rather boring). Haven't dared to watch John Carter after my brother's comments about it.

Not only wrote it but appeared in it as well

Yeah, pretty much. Not a great movie by any stretch of the imagination but surprisingly enjoyable nonetheless.

Never seen Princess Of Mars and no real desire to tbh, same source material as John Carter though so I've already seen the story anyway
