I also remember he's sent to jail with another main character after they get in a tussle in some brush, in which the young man punches the other guy with the bullet pouch in his fist, and it's discovered in jail how he hits so hard.

I want to say John Wayne is in it, but I'm not sure. I know it's black and white, and I think it came out in the 40s or 50s.

I wonder if I'm thinking of El Dorado? Unfortunately, I haven't a way to double check at the moment, but I'm wondering if James Caan used a bullet pouch in his fist to hit John Wayne. I'm 99% sure the film I'm thinking has John Wayne, but I could have had the dates wrong.
