That weird feeling

In Soviet America, you sue MPAA!
I couldn't think of any other title, so thats what your getting!

Does anyone else experience this? Sometimes when a movie comes out, I feel like some people don't deserve to see this movie because they won't be able to appreciate it. I'm talking about the kind of people that say a movie like American Beauty or the Shawshank Redemtion is a "cool movie". Is it just me, or does anyone else feel this??

I'm not saying only I should be allowed to see a movie, but does anyone else think this. I kind of have a feeling TWT might about LOTR...?

i know just what you're saying. I don't know how to put it in words though, but the other day some people were talking about Pulp Fiction and Fight Club like it's an MTV song or something. I just though that wasn't good.

I know what you mean...I feel that way about "Unbreakable" and "Dial 'M' For Murder," as well as "Rounders" and "The Apostle." Coincidentially (or not), those are my four favorite films. I especially feel it towards the first two...I feel as if anyone who didn't recognize those two as complete masterpieces just wasn't paying attention!

Well, I'm with you on "Dial M For Murder" and "Rounders", but I never saw the other two.

But even if people don't see the same things in any given movie that I do, I don't think that they aren't worthy. People have different tastes. One man's garbage is another man's gold. There are plenty of so-called masterpieces that I have no use for. And there are plenty of movies I think are as near perfect as we're likely to ever get that many other people have no use for.

I feel that way about my favorite music.I hate it when I've been listening to a group for years and then suddenly they end up on the radio. Then a bunch of people"love"them all the sudden. It's bittersweet,I want them to do well and be successful, but on the other hand,I'm possesive of them.I felt that way about Se7en,I didn't want to talk about it with anyone else...it was my movie. All my favorite actors were in it...it's mine.

I ain't gettin' in no fryer!
Well when someone mentions Fight Club some idiot has to mouth the words to the Limp Bizkit song(forget the title of it)"...I've seen the Fight Club about 28 times". I'm just like you wanna get hit!? I get mad when people call O Brother, Where Art Thou a stupid movie. I loved it, and have watched it like almost 10 times already.

Unbreakable, very good movie, if you can't understand the concept of what the director was going for, then don't say I didn't like it, it was stupid.

Pulp Fiction, this movie is very twisted, and those that just like watching it because it involves drugs, then go get a f***in life.

I have some other ones I'm trying to think of that are wonderful, but people watch em and their small heads can't comprehend what was being done so they say it was stupid just to get out of a lot of questions.

I recommend it constantly and some that have seen it said it was stupid, then I have to fight with them when they say that, cause it's just an all-round great movie. The dialogue, the scenery, actors, everything. GREAT GREAT GREAT. Those who can't appreciate a comedy of that nature are the people who you shouldnt take advice from.

I was in class the other day and we were talking about montages and this aide in our class started talking about, "Oh, that one movie with the bed. I don't remember the name of it cause it was like French or something." I was like, "God, help me rise up from this poo! The movie is Delicatessen and stop pretending like you're some film goddess becuase you've seen a montage in a foreign film!" Then my instructor, who till then had no idea what movie she was talking about said, "Oh yeah, I love that movie..." But I don't think she knew what it was either. I got kinda pissed... I have a friend who is constantly trying to one-up my DVD collection so he'll buy movies he's never even seen just because I own them. It pisses me off sooo much...

Some people just can't appreciate good films. The other day @ college watching a film (Hana-Bi)in the libary and a bimbo was watching the film over my shoulder whilst she was waiting for the photocopier. Then she said the funniest and stupidest thing I heard about film, to her friend- "I hate foreign films, they are just so weird". You can tell this girl is a person who will only see what's at the top of the movie chart.

That's not that stupid, IMO. I think most foreign films are pretty odd...I just don't have a lot of taste for them. I don't see anything wrong with that...I simply find that, more often than not, foreign/indy films just aren't as entertaining to me.

I ain't gettin' in no fryer!
To each his own. Foreign films don't make a lot of sense to me usually, which is why they are foreign. I will watch them if I have a chance to, but don't get the same sense of enjoyment out of them. Maybe this goes the same way for people that don't live in America, and are used to their type of films. So the door swings both ways.

Why are we generalizing foreign film like its a genre? Should we divide our video stores into locations of filming or languages invloved? They speak Japanese and Italian in Mystery Train, and Joe Strummer speaks with a British accent. They filmed in Memphis, so is this just another one of those British/Italian/Japanese/Memphis/Hollywood pics? I mean, come on those are all soooo weird.

My movie store that I frequent does just that. Also, regular customers get to pick out their favorite movies and put them in their own reccomendation shelf. It also has a cult-classic section.Blockbuster...it just pales in comparrison.

I think that it would be cool to have a video store around my town like that. VERY COOL......

We're getting a Blockbuster, but I'm not really excited about it.

But, we're not talking about video stores, we're talking about weird feelings so I will leave this where it is at.

I know exactly what you're talking about, Peter. I don't let it bother me anymore. One of the things I like most about movies is that in my mind, they're all my own. People can like a movie I like, and even if what they say about it sounds incredibly naive and stupid (even if it's positive) I can just block out what they said and end up thinking about the movie. It's like before American Beauty or Crouching Tiger or Rushmore came in to wide release, I felt like those movies were mine. Then everyone started talking about them, and no matter what they said, I would think to myself "I knew about them first. Stop talking about them."But now, I know that how I feel about a movie is all that matters, and I just let the naive folks be on their way. I know that sounds incredibly pretentious, but what can I say, its how I feel.

When I saw the thread title "that weird feeling" I thought it might be about how on bright days, when you leave the theater, the sunlight feels like it's attacking you. It's scary. Anyone else know what I'm talking about?

Yeah, I know what you mean...but it's rarely a problem. Usually it only happens with really "dark" films. I find that 7 out of 10 films, roughly, have a fairly low sunshine/pain factor. Steve: Peter? Me no thinks OG- the caveman posted in this thread. I do have to disagree with what you said a bit, though: I prefer to discuss movies, because what I think of a movie can indeed be faulty. I can miss vital plot elements, or potential hidden meanings, or a plethora of other things...I could misunderstand this or that, and as such, I make a point to be open-minded about a movie's value. I'm stubborn in a lot of my views, but I would never say to myself "Tough crap, this is what I believe, and you can't change it." I'd say "I don't find that argument compelling enough to change my mind over it."

Peter started the thread, my friend.

Well obviously if someone points out something that I missed, then I'm compelled to change my thoughts on a movie. This hasn't happened yet though.

But the point of my last post is that when people talk about movies that I feel like are "mine" I don't even listen to them. I just go off in my little dream world and think about the movie.

Whoops, my bad.

Hmmm, well, I understand and all, but I still don't dig it. I don't feel like I own any movie, and I don't blank someone out unless they're saying things that are beyond ridiculous...I do, however, get frustrated when I think someone is failing to appreciate certain movies, or certain aspects of movies, that I though need to be praised. That's about as far as it goes, though. I almost feel like they ought to have never seen them if they can't appreciate them for their greatness.
