Ideas and Concepts in movies

I wanted to start this thread so that people who bother to go beyond a movie and check the hard facts can discuss them here. Talk about who or what the movie was based on, Talk about whether or not the movie portrayed the scientific facts correctly if they eluded to them, Talk about what theories were all about.... that kind of thing. Here's an example of what I mean

A Beautiful Mind: This movie is based on the true life story of John Nash and in it, he makes a contribution to Economics which won him an nobel prize in 94. If you were wondering what exactly did he discover?, you have come to the right place because I will try to explain what I think of it after reading more on the man after watching this movie.

His theory specifically is called non-cooperative game theory which suggest "rational behavior for interactive decision problems". In any game the parties strive to maximize their points, score, etc... by making choices, and each person's "payoff" depends on the decisions chosen by ALL parties. And because of the fact that you and I are contestants in the same game your goals would be the same as mine. Therefore I redefine my goals to "win" relatively rather than "ideally". This was explained by the blonde and the brunette in the whole dating secnario. According to the theory... there is an "uncooperative-fixed point" whereby no one can gain any more unless someone is "willing" to take less. Meaning if Man#2 settles for the brunette MAN#1 can go after the blonde without the same implications if they both had tried their luck.

I like the thread idea!

I guess i should start with the matrix! Im sure many of you know this, but beyond the obvious, The Matrix is actually highly based off of Plato's 'Allegory of the Cave' . 'The Allegory' Described a group of people within a cave, tied to their seats. Their heads and bodies were fully restrained, so much that they had no choice but to look only at a single wall. There were others in the cave, behind the restrained ones, who would cast shadows on the opposite wall. Because the people couldnt see anything else, they believed that the shadows were the only reality. every so often, however, someone would see a glimmer of light from the entrance to the cave, and they would be released from the cave, emerging into the painful light.
And then, of course, the entire Matrix Trilogy is riddled with biblical and christian refrences, (i.e., Neo Anderson actually means New Son of Man)
Theres tons more, not all of which i will go into today.

Catch Me if You Can: Based on the true story of Frank Abagnale who was the youngest man to ever make the FBI’s most-wanted list for forgery. Between the ages of 16 to 21, Frank cashed in millions of dollars in bad checks and was successfully able to pose as various professionals… including a doctor, lawyer (he actually passed the Bar exam), pilot, and FBI agent -- the latter of which would win him his freedom from a federal prison where he had been awaiting trial. But Frank was eventually caught and sentenced to 12 years. Paroled after serving only 5 years, he found himself working low paying odd jobs which became increasingly frustrating to him… but instead of giving in to a life of crime again… Frank started offering his first hand experience about how criminals operate (for free) to the local law enforcement agencies hoping the knowledge would aid them in apprehending offenders. Word spread and before long, major companies were willing to pay for his services. To date, Frank is one of the world’s foremost authorities on document fraud, including check swindling, forgery, and embezzlement… and continues to advise Law Enforcement Agencies… for free.

According to Mr. Abagnale, the movie is basically accurate except that he was not an only child, his father was not as dishonest as portrayed, and he never made a phone call to the FBI.

i mean the fact that emotion was a crime and people like clerics didnt accually feel was very intresting. And the people who acually used prozium didnt miss the fact that they are no longer able to feel.

So many good movies, so little time.
A movie that has always intrigued me is

The Emerald Forest (1985)

John Boorman's movie was based on a true story (based on a LA Time reporters story) of an American Damn engineer in Brazil whose 7 year old son was kidnapped and adapted by an indigenous tribe. For ten years during his vacations he searched for his son. When he finally did find him he decided that it was better for his son if he left him with the tribe.

I think that a documentary about his life now in the jungle would be real interesting.

I really don't know how much of this is true but I would love to know the real facts and get an update if anyone knows.
