Should I continue in this thread, or start a new journal thread so it doesn't have to be every day? What are you guys' thoughts?
Movie a Day by the Bay
Same thread. The title doesn't matter. And you could always get Yoda to change it for you.

Not unless he meant to type Cooch..instead of Pooch... and that would be legal.. as long as she's not underage...
Anyway, you've already decided, Swan, but I'm glad you're carrying on with it.

It Follows (David Robert Mitchell, 2014) - +

The best thing about this film is it's soundtrack. I came home and immediately purchased it, and am listening to it now. It's incredibly inspiring, and humorously coincidental in that I just bought a synth and the weird synth music in this film is the kind of stuff I go for. It's very much my kind of score.
What else is great about this film? Well, for one thing it had a brilliant moment that scared the sh*t out of me. That might not sound unusual, but it is. I've often said horror movies don't scare me anymore and haven't since I was a kid, but there was a moment in this that literally sent shivers down my spine. I don't want to spoil it, but it was a moment of pure genius. Aside from that, the movie relies more on a constant sense of dread that anything truly terrifying. There are a few horrific moments, but more often than not it's that lingering feeling of It coming for you.
I also loved the cast. Great characters and great performances. Maika Monroe is a wonderful talent and a great lead in this movie, as are the actors and actresses playing her friends.
I was a bit cautious going into this. There has been so much hype and honestly, while the trailers looked good it didn't look to me like like a work of brilliance or anything. It looked like just a typical, fun horror movie. To say I wasn't excited would be a lie - because I love horror. But I wasn't expecting a masterpiece. So what's my final verdict? Well, it's a bit of both. It's a brilliantly crafted work of fun and terror.
Overall, this was simple and effective horror movie. When I watch a horror film, I don't ask for much. I want it to be fun, engaging, well-made (though even the trash has its place), but more than anything I love when the filmmaker knows what makes a horror movie good and runs with it. If the director succeeds in doing that, he's making something intelligent. And a fun, intelligently-made horror movie is one of the things I live for.
I'm really looking forward to It Follows and will watch it as soon as it's available for me, although it sounds like I won't like the soundtrack.
And yea, you can't bail out of the thread when it's a sure bet for a nomination at the next MoFies.

The Guest (Adam Wingard, 2014) -

I really enjoyed this movie. I think I realized something about my taste in movies. I like things that are stylish and visceral. I've often complained about the use of the term "style over substance," and I think that's evidence that I love style. I don't see it as a fault though. To me, style can be substan- ah, f*ck it, I've talked about this before.
Anyway, yeah, this movie worked for me because of it's style. A good soundtrack goes a long way for me, and this one was fantastic. Every time I got goosebumps in this movie, it was due to great moments in the soundtrack happening at the same time great moments in the film happened.
I'm not saying there isn't substance outside of the style. There is an interesting story in it for sure, full of twists and turns and compelling drama. All I'm saying is, if the film didn't have the style it has, I don't think I'd have liked it as much.
Overall, awesome movie.

I think style over substance only has any credence as a complaint if the film is attempting to put itself over as saying more than it is by looking a way which would imply that it's saying/being something more.
For example, you can't say The Killer is style over substance because it's an action film. It looks fantastic and uses every trick in the book, but it doesn't pretend to be anything other than an action film. But even with a valid case, does it matter if you know?
