The Double (2013)

Simon works for a company in a dystopian society where nothing seems to be as it is. One day James enters the company. To Simon he looks the same, sounds the same but in his attitude and actions he is very different and yet no-one else can see it. As his life unravels Simon starts to loose grip on reality.

I had never seen on heard of this film until the last month or so. Reading up about it and who it stars I pre-ordered it from Amazon and it just arrived today. To say this is a very bizarre film would be an understatement. It is not a hard film to follow or to understand but the way it is written draws you in incredibly well. You know about the character Simon but you don't. You don't know who he is, what he does, where this is set, what time frame but this just doesn't matter. Yes the film was a bit odd at times but at no point did I consider switching the DVD off. It had this stranger power to keep me engaged rather along the same lines as Eternal Sunshine and Requiem for a Dream, I am not saying this is entirely on that level but it holds the strangeness to it.

The set design is wonderful, the lighting is fantastic and the script whilst a bit odd is very well done. The interactions between Simon (Jessie Eisenburg) and Hannah (Mia Wasikowska) are very well done and reminded me of the opening scene of The Social Network in how they communicate and the speed in which the lines are delivered, it was sometimes hard to keep up.

This is a film I will watch again but more than that it is a film I am looking forward to showing other people and saying "what do you think?", for me this is a master class in film making because it is so simple and yet it does so much.

My rating: 10/10 - I really cannot fault it.

This has been on my watchlist for a while, Submarine was a good film and this one looks promising too.

I just finished watching The Double, and I was very pleasantly surprised. I was expecting a quirky comedy, and nothing more, but I was completely wrong. Richard Ayoade has created a magnificent, and yet horrifying world in The Double. The setting is truly amazing in The Double, and the mood and atmosphere is almost at a David Lynch level. Acting is amazing from all around, and I really enjoyed watching Jesse Eisenberg throughout this film. One thing that I really blew me away was the camerawork and lighting in this film. The lighting is perfect, and shows just the right amount without giving too much away. I cannot properly express in words how great the camerawork and visuals are in this film. Moving on to music. The music is fantastic in this. 'Nuff said. I'm sorry I haven't written a more thorough review, it's just that this film really blew me away and I completely loved it and enjoyed it so much that it's hard to concentrate on writing a good review when I'm this excited about a film. I am still thinking about it, and probably will continue thinking about it for quite some time. I absolutely loved The Double. It is an entertaining, and dark masterpiece that makes you think. Watch. This. Film. It's on Netflix.
