The 4th Short Film Hall of Fame
Welcome to the 4th Edition of the MoFo Short Film Hall of Fame The HoFs have been a great part of this Forum, and it all started in 2014 when Godoggo created the 1st Hall of Fame and the first Special HoF, The Mofo Hall of Fame - Shorts Editon, so this is kind of an historic category. The rules are pretty much the same to the previous editions: 1. Any movie with less than 45 minutes can be nominated, except of course the winners of the previous editions: La Jetée, Harvie Krumpet and Tale of Tales. 2. You have till April 10th to send your nomination. The duration of this HoF depends on how many people are joining. I'll give 1 week per two films. 3. You can send me your nominations by private message, with the title, year, director and, if you want, some words explaining your choice. Please do not reveal your nomination on this thread before everyone. 4. Watch all the movies, write your thoughts on this thread and send a ranked list of all the films to me. Do not reveal your list before the unveil. It's a easy HoF to handle, especially considering we are doing a break on the General HoFs, so I hope to get many people in for this. Here are the links to the 3 previous editions: 1. https://www.movieforums.com/communit...ghlight=shorts 2. https://www.movieforums.com/communit...ighlight=short 3. https://www.movieforums.com/communit...ighlight=short Enjoy!!! I like this idea, and I definitely have time to watch some short films, but I don't really know of any to nominate since I don't typically watch them.
|
Sorry bud, I'm not into shorts:p

thanks for the summoning!! |

Re: The 4th Short Film Hall of Fame
:p that's the main objective to these things gbg, to get to know new things! XD And animated shorts are welcome!

I will join this. It is going to give me an excuse to nominate something that I won't be able to nominate otherwise, I suppose. :) I don't plan on it being loved, but it may, at the very least, be liked (but I personally love it :)).
I will get that nomination to you in a little bit. |

is there spiders, @Camo?

I'm joining this! I just send my nomination :)
|
Re: The 4th Short Film Hall of Fame
So, we have 5 participants so far, 6 if gbg decides joining as well. If this number doesn't go up in the next few hours I'll ask everyone who joined to send a second nomination so we reach at least 10 shorts.
|
Re: The 4th Short Film Hall of Fame
cool with me! Either way.
Not sure if I'll be back on later today so I'll get the 2nd one (if needed) Monday |
I'm just going to go ahead and send you a second nomination because I know after I get off of here I won't be back on tonight, and there is a good chance I won't be around tomorrow at all. I may eventually make an appearance, but as of right now, I don't know.
|
We are 6 now, counting with Dani8! :) @gbgoodies, will we have the pleasure of your company?
In any case, I'll ask everyone who send their first nom, to send a second one! 6 or 7 shorts is way too little! @MovieMeditation, I haven't forgotten! :p |
Re: The 4th Short Film Hall of Fame
I'll see what I can do. First I need to find a nom... TWO noms. Let me work on it.
|
Re: The 4th Short Film Hall of Fame
I can think of another tropfest one. Also really funny, although some may wonder how the hell it won.

I can decide on a second now if you'd like. |
I know my second one will be liked more than my first. But I still like my first nomination a lot. :)
I gave neiba the links to both, if he wants to post them. But I decided to do that because I don't want people to end up watching the wrong videos. And there is a wrong video to watch for both of them. |
Re: The 4th Short Film Hall of Fame
I sent my second nomination as well. The first is on Youtube (and is not to be confused with a film of the same name from the following year), and the second is on Vimeo. I included the links in my PMs to Neiba in case they're going to be embedded/linked to in the nominations post.
|
Re: The 4th Short Film Hall of Fame
Thanks everyone! :) A nice HoF seems to be emerging!! :)

I'm sorry that I didn't reply to this sooner, but I've had a very busy weekend, and I haven't even had a chance to think about what to nominate. (I have one specific short in mind, but I haven't had a chance to see if it's available to watch anywhere without buying the DVD, and I haven't thought about a second short at all, or a replacement if the first short is unavailable.) If this is still open tomorrow night, (probably late tomorrow night), I'll join, but if you're ready to start before then, you can start without me and I'll just watch the shorts from the sidelines. Camo, if you don't want to change your nom, that's okay. Unless it's basically a short version of Arachnophobia, I'll get through it somehow. |

Yes, he did Camo! :)
|
Re: The 4th Short Film Hall of Fame
Done. Mine are very short shorts. Hot pants even.
|
Re: The 4th Short Film Hall of Fame
I think I'll monitor this from the sidelines this time, but I'm really curious about what the noms will be. And Neiba, if you need a tiebreaker or something, let me know, I'd gladly help out.

Re: The 4th Short Film Hall of Fame
Aaand CR just got in! :) We have now 7 participants (possibly 8 with gbg), which mean 14(16) shorts to see! :) I took a peek in some of them, we're in for a treat! :)

SWEET!!

As well as my two i've seen Everything Will Be Ok which i like quite a bit. My nom Spider first of all doesn't have any actual spiders as i told gbg and Dani. It's basically a silly 9 minute short that you can only really watch once. I think it is fun though i don't expect it to do well but hopefully a few of you enjoy it. I'd ask that everyone try not to read anyone's posts about it because if it's spoiled then it's spoiled; no good haha. A Dogs Life is the only Chaplin Short i've seen, i watched it after watching some of his and Keatons films in Sean and Rauls thread; while reading about him i read that this is considered the turning point for him into seamlessly blending drama and comedy. I don't know if that is accurate or not but i liked it alot. Also Ed - Chaplin Bros :highfive: Will probably watch a few of these tonight, is there a deadline yet @neiba ? Also just an idea but could you maybe list the runtimes for these in the first post as i'd like to work my way up from the shortest to the longest? Mines are: Spider - 9 Minutes, A Dog's Life - 38 Minutes. About the runtimes, I was going to do that but I forgot. Thanks for the reminder! |

I didn't go looking for it but it was the only one a link didn't come up for right away and i had to look to get the runtime, and it's the only one without a link on the first page. |
Re: The 4th Short Film Hall of Fame
I'm really looking forward to watching these!
A quick note on my nominations: if you know nothing about Dust going in, don't look up anything about it; just watch it! Don't even look up the IMDB page for it because the one line written in the synopsis is a spoiler. Flankers is a Newfoundland short film shot in a couple of real outport communities. Be prepared for rural Newfoundland accents. |
I'm very excited to start watching these. This should be fun!
My 1st short is: Make a Wish (2006).. Atmenah(original title) I seen it on the DVD extras of the movie Amreeka (2009) by Cherien Dabis. So if you can find that DVD you got to for the price of one. It was on Vimeo, but apparently it's been removed. So I hope this is not a problem. I looked for it at a few sites but couldn't find it. If it proves to be impossible I will have to find another short. |

Angel Beatbox I've definitely seen this before or something very similar, think it might have been on 8 Out of 10 Cats or Russel Howard's Good News or something. Fun and catchy stuff. It's very simple of course but pretty creative too, i like the cutouts and the guys voice and the pig lying on its back/side was awesome. And he gets extra points for not neglecting the sealife or dolphins as they are known haha. Bomb Really can't say anything about this without ruining it. It was well done, i really didn't realize what was happening until it did haha. Anyway, fun noms. I don't really know what Tropfest is but it seems like it would be fun to go to if it is an actual festival. Tropfest is an outdoor short film festival in Sydney. I think the guy who runs it set one up in NYC but I havent heard about that since. http://www.coolevents.com.au/assets/Tropfest.jpg
One of the most unique aspects of the competition is that every film must be made specifically for Tropfest. The intention is to encourage filmmakers to get better at the craft of filmmaking, by making more unique content. This is achieved through having an annual Tropfest Signature Item (TSI) that must be included in their film.
This year’s TSI is PINEAPPLE! |
Re: The 4th Short Film Hall of Fame
OK I'm going to get Spider out of the way first because I know the title wont continue freaking me out for the rest of the day , and because it's an Edgerton.
|
Re: The 4th Short Film Hall of Fame
Oh man, you got me, Camo, and it wasnt the title. There will be a reckoning, my good man!!!
That was very well made. |

Re: The 4th Short Film Hall of Fame
Are we only viewing 2 per week or is it ok to \scoot forward? And should we view in order because I;m doing what Cam did and watching the shortest first just so I get used to watching lengthier shorts on my laptop.

Re: The 4th Short Film Hall of Fame
Spider
So, I wasn't expecting this at all! Dani is right, it totally surprises even when you think you know what will happen! It's a very nice short movie, thanks Camo. Animal Beatbox Didn't find this particularly funny! The animation is interesting and it sure is catchy but apart from that, I haven't found nothing that I liked a lot here. Bomb This is funny! I kind of saw where it was all going the moment the guy put the shirt on his head but I still found the ending very funny! It's really well done! Paperman This was nominated on a previous Short HoF, I think, and it wasn't new to me then, so this is at least the 3rd time I'm watching it. It has the typical animation of Pixar and its typical quality. Short but very beautiful! :) This will do well here, I foresee! Pop goes the Easel It's a very funny short film from the Three Stooges with its trademark physical humour, I laughed at some parts even if this kind of jokes have been remade countless times since 1935. |

Bomb I loved when I first saw it and still makes me laugh. In the spirit of full disclosure because I dont want to be seen as a shill - I know the cast and crew of that. I have not been paid, even a piddly beer or t shirt, for plugging that. Spider was amazing. I thought I knew what was coming but I was wrong...so wrong. What a ride. edit to add - Bomb was a pisstake at a very expensive campaign by the then PM of Aus about terrorism. Be Alert Not Alarmed, which freaked a lot of people out, and pissed a lot of people off. Typical irreverent aussie humour. |
Re: The 4th Short Film Hall of Fame
Paperman is a really sweet uplifting lil film. I need more of that with the current state of play in the world. Who nom'd that?
I had no idea how much fun this would be. Titu again. Nice job young fella. |
I have seen, including mine, 6 of these films already. And if you think you know me well enough, it wouldn't be too hard to figure out which ones are the other 4. There was only one other one that I'd heard about. But these all seem pretty interesting to me.
I will begin (and probably will be finishing :) ) watching next week. |

Also really appreciate both of you not spoiling anything, as you know you really can't know a thing about it going in similar to what Cosmic said about her nom  If you liked that BTW the guy made another short later called Bear; it's not as shocking but it is really funny i feel. And it was the actor who made it; he is Joel Edgerton's brother  I'm a spoiler free zone, Cam, except to say it's sooo good. And you'll laugh at my PM. I thought about joining and nominating a Buster Keaton short, but I just can't handle my load right now.
Cool to see The Mystery of the Leaping Fish nominated, it's a weird ass film. I'll be rooting for the Hertzfeldt short, but I doubt it will have much success. |
Re: The 4th Short Film Hall of Fame
Ohh Dust was great. Looking forward to debriefing once everyone sees it. This is going to be a tough vote. Great to see Rickman again.
And that's it for me until later in the day. Have to go and get nuked for a scan but will keep reading ny further posts. |
Animal Beatbox (2011)
Dir. Damon Gameux This was quite amusing, and rather creative (regardless as to whether or not the idea was original, as per the controversy mentioned earlier in the thread). It reminds me of the sort of videos that became massively popular on the internet in the pre-Youtube days. That stuff has become a dime a dozen over the last decade, but it's still fun to watch. Bomb (2005) Dir. Aleister Grierson I wish this had been named something different, since it's easy to see where the film is going fairly quickly when you have that title in mind. That said, the journey towards the inevitable ending is still entertaining, and that's the most important part. I hope I'm not the only one who laughed at the end. Dust (2013) Dir. Ben Ockrent, Jake Russel Like I said before, it's best not to know anything about the plot going into this, so I'm not going to spoil the reveal. What I like about the film is the build-up to that point, the sinister vibe underneath it, and the anticipation of waiting to see what exactly is going to happen. And of course, the late Alan Rickman is always a pleasure to watch, even if it's just for a few minutes. |
Flankers (2014)
Dir. Justin Oakey Despite being regarded as a very friendly province, the people who live in rural Newfoundland have a tendency to be incredibly prejudiced against people from other outport communities. These are places that are still fairly isolated with very few resources and a harsh climate to deal with, so while the residents definitely look after their own, they don't take too kindly to outsiders from neighbouring communities, especially if there has been a dispute between the two in the past. Flankers, which I only saw for the first time the other day, tackles that subject matter head-on. I was actually really surprised by the honest portrayal and the lack of emphasis placed on the theme of “coming together against adversity” that is disgustingly common in practically everything about Newfoundland. Seeing it underplayed here was really nice. In case you're wondering about the relevancy of the title, “flankers” is a local word for those active fire embers that pop up on their own. Given how troublesome Newfoundland dialects can be to people not familiar with them, if you have any issues with understanding the dialogue, just let me know and I can translate it into common English for you. Paperman (2012) Dir. John Kars The link provided for Paperman did not work for me (it would only play about a minute of the video), so I watched it elsewhere on Youtube. While this was kind of cute at the start, I don't typically find those ridiculous romantic comedy films to be very amusing, so I kind of lost interest in this the longer it went on. I can certainly see the appeal to people who like those kind of films, but it's just not my cup of tea. It was nicely animated though. Spider (2007) Dir. Nash Edgerton I really enjoyed this. I was engrossed from the opening quote (attributed to mum because everyone's mothers have said that line at some point haha), to the amusing and unexpected ending. This is another film you really just need to see for yourself, so unfortunately there's nothing else I can really say about this other than for you guys just to go watch it. |
Re: The 4th Short Film Hall of Fame
two great surprises today, reading through the 13th HoF and seeing the noms and THEN doing the same with this thread ---- SWEET!!!

Cool to see The Mystery of the Leaping Fish nominated, it's a weird ass film. I'll be rooting for the Hertzfeldt short, but I doubt it will have much success. |
Re: The 4th Short Film Hall of Fame
I encourage everyone to use the SPOILERS tag, so everyone who already saw the shorts can discuss freely!

Re: The 4th Short Film Hall of Fame
I wasn't sure what it was meant to be about. Gluttony perhaps.
Paperman has better animation. Reminded me a bit of fantasia animation. |
Re: The 4th Short Film Hall of Fame
With paperman I found a Spanish version. Will link whenci get home if you haven't found it.

Re: The 4th Short Film Hall of Fame
Lol at your spoiler for dust. I thought exactly the same on all your points. Rip to a magnificent actor. What a loss.
What did you think of paperman. |

Giant God Warrior Appears in Tokyo
Damn, this looks stunning!!! It's a Ghibli production so I was with my hopes pretty high but I surely wasn't expecting this!
WARNING: "spoiler" spoilers below
I love the fact that the explosions of the buildings and streets were not CGI, but real explosions, gave it an awesome look. And the giants are freaking scary.
Also, I loved how the seven days of destruction were based on the seven days of creation. The only bad part about this it's that it's too short! I wanted it to continue!!! This will do well on this HoF, I think! |

Dust Another one with a huge surprising at the end.
WARNING: "HUGE SPOILER" spoilers below
I was expecting everything except Alan Rickman being an addicted toothfairy!!!!!
There isn't much to say that isn't spoiling this, but it's a really nice short movie! The Ventriloquist A tale about a man that lives in the shadow of his puppet. I loved the ending, and Kevin Spacey is quite goot in this, as obvious!!! |

Peace on Earth
A charming cartoon, that may have been pretty scary for kids at that time. WW II was about to start so this must have created some impact. I found the ending, with the bible thing a little bit preachy but in general I quite liked it! The soundtrack is cute!! 11 watched, 9 to go! |
Re: The 4th Short Film Hall of Fame
Peace on Earth. That sure sneaks up on you. Beautiful animation.

Re: The 4th Short Film Hall of Fame
I haven't watched anything yet. I do remember an animated short that I seen once on a DVD extra, about the end of the world brought on by fighting and I recall mice in a bombed out church...was there such a scene in Peace on Earth?

Re: The 4th Short Film Hall of Fame
Squirrels, could be what I was thinking of. I will watch it soon and see. If it's the same one that I recall, I was very impressed with it! I've never seen another animated short like it. Now! I'm very curious to watch it.

I'm changing my nom as, Make a Wish isn't available online. It's too bad as Make a Wish is a wonderful Palestinian film about two young girls, sisters...who set out to buy a birthday cake for their mother. It's quite well done, but not available unless you can get the DVD of Amreeka (2009)
So I am replacing it with: The Cameraman's Revenge (1912) - 13 min. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVatbWZpmPw |
Re: The 4th Short Film Hall of Fame
The Ventriloquist. Anything with Spacey is a good thing. Great choice, gbg.
