Forums Help

Can I download movies here?

No. This site does not condone or allow the illegal distribution of copyrighted movies. It has never allowed the posting of such movies, or discussions about where they might be found. If you have a memory of watching movies here, you must be thinking of another site with a similar name.

Where did my thread go?

If you recently posted a thread and can no longer find it, it was probably moved. Assuming it was not a form of spam, odds are it was simply moved to a more appropriate forum. If you were asking for help finding or remembering a movie, it was probably moved to the Movie Questions forum.

I still can't find my thread...

If you've looked around and still cannot find the thread you posted, then your thread was probably deemed to be a form of spam. Anyone who registers only to post self-promotional material is generally considered to be a spammer, even if the thread in question was on-topic.

Another possibility is that we already have a thread on the topic. Please use the search page to ensure that previous threads on the topic do not exist before starting a new one.

What's with those thumbs on people's posts?

Millions of years ago, gladiators roamed the earth as freelance warriors, hiring their skills out to wealthy socialities. To amuse their clients, they would do battle to the death with local merchants. Once they'd subdued them, the wealthy socialite would give the gladiator either a thumbs up or thumbs down to determine their fate.

Today, we honor these freelance gladiators with the dual 15-pixel thumb icons you see above. The consequences of clicking on one or another are far less severe today, though: a thumbs up gives the author of that post a reputation point, and a thumbs down takes one from them. Depending on their level of emotional dependence on the community, this may result in a metaphorical death, rather than the literal one of the olden days.

What is reputation?

It's a running tally of points that each member has accumulated. When someone clicks the thumbs up icon on one of your posts, you receive a point. When they click the thumbs down, you lose one. Your reputation total is the net total of the two.

Reputation here is largely like reputation in real life: symbolic. It effects the little green (or red, if you've ticked a lot of people off) dots under your username on your posts. Highly ranked posts can be highlighted in various ways: for example, if they're part of a Movie Club discussion, they could find their way into the "Highest Rated Comments" box on the Movie Club page.

How can I see who's giving me reputation, and on which posts?

You can use the Reputation Tracker, found in the My Profile area, to view your recently received reputation.

Why do some people have a green bar on their posts?

Obviously we can't go on adding green reputation dots forever. So, when a user accumulates more than 500 net reputation points, the green dots under their username turn into a solid green bar (which many members call a "lightsaber" because, well, it looks like one).

Can I promote my site/movie/product here?

No/no/no. We take spam very seriously, and generally take a "remove posts first, ask questions later" policy on anything which reeks of promotion.

People who spam our site have to jump through a number of hoops to do so, and most spam is removed so quickly that they end up wasting their time. Roughly half of all blatant spam is removed in under 5 minutes.

We're so obsessed with keeping this place spam-free that we've actually posted a moderator scoreboard for the fastest removal times.

Why can't I post links?

New members must have at least 10 posts under their belts before they can use links in their posts. This may be inconvenient for some, but it helps cut down on spam.

What's The Shoutbox?

Unfortunately, no one can be told what The Shoutbox is. You have to see it for yourself.

Personally, I like to think of it as the world's longest running game of free association, though it genuinely defies description. Is it a chat room? Is it a message board? Neither. Or both. Depends on who you ask, really. Whatever it is, it's responsible for thousands of hours of lost productivity.

Slightly more serious answer: it's a place for random messages that don't really fit anywhere on the forums. If an actual, straightforward discussion breaks out and carries on too long, The Shoutbox Tyrant may swoop down and move the shouts into an actual thread.

What are User Reviews?

Just movie reviews written by users. Our moderators keep their eyes peeled for any posts which review a movie, and then flag it as a review.

You can browse through them all on the User Reviews page.

Why hasn't my review shown up in the User Reviews area?

It may not have met the qualifications we use to determine which reviews to flag. If a review is extremely short, or consists of little more than a plot synopsis, we won't usually flag it. A review is also more likely to be flagged if it's given a 1-5 star rating.

It's also possible we simply missed it, in which case, feel free to jump up and down until you get a moderator's attention.

 General Help

What's there to do around here, anyway?

Great question; so glad I asked it.

The main attraction here are our movie forums. Always has been, always will be. The forums have been up since July of 2000, making them one of longest-running on the entire Internet. To join in, just register; it's quick and free.

Aside from that, we've got a regularly updated movie reviews area (featuring hundreds of user reviews pulled right off the forums), movie quizzes, lists, box office updates, and a Movie Club for focused discussions.

There's a lot more, but the rest is best discovered by just generally poking around.

Someone just called me a "MoFo." I'm outraged, I tell you! Outraged!

Whoa, hey, keep your monocle on, Professor. MoFo is just slang for "Movie Forums. Get it? We're not being rude, we just have a really juvenile sense of humor.

MoFo is also a slang term for the site's members. As a general rule, if this in any way bothers you, you're probably not going to like it around here.

I need someone to help me

Hey, everybody needs somebody sometimes. If you have a question that isn't answered here, or just need help with something, please contact any of the site staff: If you're registered, you can also post a request or question (or "requestion," if you will) in the Movie Forums Site Stuff forum.

 Movie Club Help

What is Movie Club?

The first rule of Movie Club is: you do not talk about Movie Club. Just kidding. Movie Club is comprised of a group of movie lovers who, once a month, select a movie, rent it, and then all come back to discuss it for a couple of weeks, before starting the whole process over again.

How can I participate?

Easy: just register for our forums and you can immediately start talking about our current film, and even vote on the next one! That's pretty much all there is to it.

How often does the Club select new movies?

It varies, but generally it's between six and eight weeks. This gives everyone about a week to vote on which movie to discuss, another week to grab a copy of it, and then a little over a month to watch and discuss it.

 Lists Help

What's with the "Lists" section?

The Lists section contains famous movie lists to help users keep track of which films they've seen. You can use them to help fill in the gaps in your cinematic education, as well as share them with others, so they can see how many you've seen.

To use the Lists section, just register and start filling them out. We'll track all your updates and your percentages will automatically show up on your posts.

If I check a film off one list, will it be automatically checked off the others?

Yes, though the occasional difference in spelling or title format may prevent this from happening in every instance. For example, if you check off Raiders of the Lost Ark, this won't be reflected on a list that contains Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. These instances should be rare, though, as we make an effort to standardize most popular titles.
