I don't think Bewitched is a great movie, but I think it's better than most people rate it. It's at least as good as an average rom-com.

2 is probably my average rom-com rating, so I don't necessarily disagree with you. On the other hand I wouldn't call Bewitched a straight-up rom-com because it's a little too self-referentially bad; it feels more like a mild spoof of rom-coms to me. The problem is it doesn't have enough goofiness to fill a whole movie (it's at least 20 minutes too long) and nothing in the first two acts gives you any reason to care about the third one (in fact it gives you good reasons not to).

3.5

Dir. Martin Scorsese

Love this flick. The Aviator is beautifully shot and finds Leonardo DiCaprio at his absolute best along with Martin Scorsese at his almost best. I think if Leo should've won an Oscar for any role, it should've been this one. Coming in at just under 3 hours, the film moves along at a great pace and manages to one up itself with almost every scene.

A fantastic film that's so good, I almost can't believe it's a biopic. Only complaint is the non-ending. But, it's hardly an issue in the grand scheme of things.

Insidious 3

Yep - it was that time again! My horror-addicted GF had me sit down in front of some damn sequel to a film I just sort of liked. The first film was praised pretty highly for a horror flick, as it was directed by James Wan (The Conjuring), a guy that has actually gained some pretty decent skills over the years as far as atmosphere, and he tends to play with convention a bit. However, I wasn't a big fan of the second film.

So, with that in mind, I guess I have to say that Insidious 3 was a step up from Part 2, mostly due to an impressive performance (for the most part) by Lin Shane. There were some fairly effective scenes, and again the film played around a bit with convention. Imagine my surprise when I saw that this thing was directed by Leigh Whannell. I just can't stand this man's work, usually. That said, he did a decent job directing this flick. Definitely the best by FAR from this clown, at least of the material I have been exposed to.

Alas, Insidious 3 is still a sort of run-of-the-mill affair, not bringing anything novel to the table, and leaning once again too heavily on the startling jump scare. The film startles the viewer over and over, and to me, that's just not great film making when it comes to horror. Compare this film to the much better, much more suspenseful It Follows, and this thing falls flat, fast.

How Green Was My Valley 4.5++

My lord this is one of the most beautiful, touching, heartwarming, and poetic films I have ever seen. A triumph on every possible front, from the miraculous direction to the beautiful script. There were many times where I was close to crying like a little child, each frame contains so much...beauty. I can't find the correct words to describe this honestly, can anyone though really? This masterwork has gained the reputation of being the film that beat out Citizen Kane for best-picture. I adore Kane, but if it had to lose to any film it would be this. I am not one for hyperbole, at least I hope not, but this is arguably one of the 50 greatest American films. Wait change that, it is one of the greatest american films, no doubt about it. This is only my 5th from Ford, but if he has anything up his sleeve that is even remotely as beautiful as this then I would be shocked. I won't even bother writing anything about the other great films on this post, none of them compare to this one.

Damn.

Budet laskovyy dozhd (Tulyakhodzayev, 1984)- 2.5
The Cow (Petrov, 1989)- 2

Notes:
Pretty weak set of films overall. Lets start with the Russian films, the strongest of the set is by far Elena. It's my third film from Zvyagintsev, leaving only The Banishment left from his filmography. He's a great director, this film definitely has more in common with Leviathan than The Return, as it's more of a social commentary than one on its characters, even though all three do both. Zvyagintsev is great at detaching himself from his characters, allowing himself to critique all the characters of the film. There's no antagonist or protagonist, just an economic situation. Budet laskovyy dozhd is an animated short film that makes Eraserhead look like realism. Truly bizzare images on the screen, the video I found was very low quality though. The Cow is the weakest Petrov film I have seen so far, very detached to this story. I finally got to watching my criterion of L'enfance nue or Naked Childhood and it's pretty strong, I prefer it to 400 blows which has a similar subject matter. The film making of Pialat's debut feature is very straight forward, my issue is that I found the strongest dramatic scene did not even follow the main character. His short film L'amour existe felt overly pessimistic and the tone of the narrator sounded like contempt to the audience. Playtime is a film I expected to like a lot more, I've heard great things about Tati and this film. The set is great, I love the modern design and can appreciate the production value. However the humor of this film is something I found too much of a gimmick rather than comedy, making it a struggle to even finish. After the store scene I felt like I have seen everything there is to see from Playtime. There's a Man in the Woods: Decent but flawed short film, worth checking out.

Munger Road (2011, Nicholas Smith) 3_5 - A somewhat decent and entertaining horror flick. Sometimes suspenseful, it tended to become tedious at times. Even though it is a little under an hour and half, the way it was presented it could have been made as an hour long episode of law and order.

The one main gripe I have about the entire thing is the very end. It ended with the infamous 'To be Continued'. Not that I really care whether or not a sequel gets made, because I am not sitting at the edge of my seat waiting for the studio to release it. But it did finish to a point that I wanted some good closure. No luck whatsoever.

This got quite a bit of good press, and I can't for the life of me figure out why. Nothing new here: Standard revenge flick, poorly written dialogue, Reeves hamming it up. The villain was lackluster and why is everything lit so poorly these days? Films aren't in color anymore - they are in duotone with either a steel gray or dark gray/blue washout. Please start making films in color again. Thanks.

The Hobbit : Battle of the Five Armies
(Jackson, 2014)

http://static2.hypable.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/the-hobbit-the-battle-of-the-five-armies-synopsis.jpg

Decent. This is a pretty well-done fantasy flick - too bad it isn't really The Hobbit. I saw the subtitle and understood what I was getting into, but the titular character just isn't around very much in this final film. More concerned with the tacked on romance with Tauriel and the Arthurian Thorin Oakenshield, the king who has lost his way, this film is put together fairly well - it just isn't The Hobbit we know and love. Alas, this isn't what we signed up for, folks. We came to see the story of The Hobbit. It's in there somewhere, lost in the shuffle. Scenes we recognize float by, but they seemed shoehorned into proceedings more concerned with material from Tolkein's The Simmarillian or with scenes that Jackson and crew just sort of and made up along the way.

These films rarely capture the magic of the LotR trilogy, but this final film certainly wasn't a bad movie. if only Jackson would have exercised the same restraint he did with that original trilogy, this might have been something special. Alas, the CGI cat is out of the bag, and like George Lucas before him, Jackson went too far into fantasy land, forgetting the small moments and focusing on grand, kinetic landscapes filled of creatures, battles, and lights. It works for a while, but like an overstuffed child late on Halloween night, after a while, all the candy just makes you sick.

I wish more Pinky Violence films were readily available on dvd and blu ray in the west. The ones that are tend to go out of print quickly and subsequently sell for silly money online. Clearly there's a whole treasure-trove of unseen gems waiting for discovery. UK label Arrow are starting to address this with their Stray Cat Rock boxset, and various other Chanbara films that also star Meiko Kaji, and I have some of the US releases on Discotek Media and Panik House, but there are loads I either can't afford, or simply don't know about. I guess torrents are the only way with some of these flicks.

It looked like it was filmed on somebody's herky-jerky cellphone. As expected, about one-third of the "lyrics" are the n-word and the b-word. The only funny part in the movie was when white cop Michael Rappaport asked his black partner to stop using the n-word.

"That's the truth. The lesson is in the struggle. That's what makes us shine, or roll over and die like little bitches in the dirt with our guts exposed and flies ******** in our open mouths"

I'm a fan of Neil LaBute as a playwright; Some Velvet Morning is typical of his short plays. There is no attempt to disguise the fact that it's a by-the-numbers one-act play.

Even the title is a little lazy. Though the contrasting personalities of Fred and Velvet suggest the Lee Hazlewood/Nancy Sinatra song of the same name was an inspiration, we don't get to hear it. The film is set one morning in the house of Velvet (Alice Eve). Fred, a middle-aged lawyer (Stanley Tucci) turns up on Velvet's doorstep to announce that he's left his wife for her. Velvet is seeing her ex- Fred's son Chris- on the side, which winds up already aggressive Fred.

For a film that is essentially one long argument between two characters, the dialogue should be much tighter. LaBute's dialogue in In The Company of Men and Your Friends and Neighbours was perfectly and nastily on point, whereas here it's the old play convention of contriving reasons why they continue the argument.

With the writing relatively low-key (well, it is a LaBute film so some rage remains), the focus is all on the acting. Eve becomes better as the film progresses; Tucci is actually pretty good, considering that I've only ever seen him in comic roles. He carries off the LaBute dialogue more naturally than Eve and Fred's aggressive sense of entitlement is classic LaBute. Whilst Fred and Velvet's relationship is in stalemate, there are some nice moments of tenderness between them (tenderness in a LaBute film is quite a surprise).

There is a twist at the end, which is initially frustrating but it does make you want to rewatch the film. On a rewatch, I may prefer it but for me at the moment, it's a little too thin and lacks the brutal honesty/dishonesty of In The Company of Men, or even Your Friends and Neighbours.

June, 2015 movies watched-

Cul-De-Sac (1966) 4.5 Early Polanski thriller that I found to be absolutely hilarious.

Far from the Madding Crowd (1967) 3.5 This British film is not my kind of movie at all, but it's a very good one.

Shame (1968) 4 Liv Ullmann and Max Von Sydow give terrific performances in one of my new favorites from director Bergman.

O Pagador de Promessas (1962) 3.5 The only Brazilian film ever to win the big prize at Cannes was a big surprise for me.

Barbarella (1968) 2 Crappy but watchable, thanks to Fonda's hotness.

The Big City (1963) 4.5 Thoroughly impressed with my first movie from director Ray.

Darling (1965) 2.5 Great performance from Julie Christie, but otherwise very average for me.

The Battle of Algiers (1966) 4.5 The most realistic portrayal of terrorism I've ever seen on screen.

The Human Condition II: Road to Eternity (1959) 3.5 A small step down from the first I thought, but still great filmmaking.

Support Your Local Sheriff! (1969) 3 Very enjoyable and likable comedic Western with a nice cast, headlined by James Garner.

The Face of Another (1966) 4 I found the secondary story to be unnecessary, but otherwise I thought this was terrific.

The Incident (1967) 2.5 I enjoyed this movie but thought it lacked believability.

L'Eclisse (1962) 2.5 Nothing I disliked, and it was great to look at, but I couldn't connect.

The Blues Brothers (1980) Repeat viewing 5 My most special favorite.

Faces (1968) 2.5 Loved the acting and how it was filmed, but I thought a lot of the scenes dragged needlessly.

A Woman is a Woman (1961) 2.5 Not my kind of movie, but it's short, somewhat amusing, and has Anna Karina.

The Hustler (1961) Repeat viewing 4.5 I've seen this movie many times, and this was perhaps my most rewarding viewing.

The Human Condition III: A Soldier's Prayer (1961) 4 I absolutely loved the first half of this last film of the trilogy, then started to feel it's length a bit in the second half.

Cold in July (2014) 3 Very solid southern crime thriller.

Kidnapped (2010) 3.5 Very intense, upsetting, and well made home invasion flick.

Harakiri (1962) Repeat viewing 4.5 One of the best Japanese movies I've seen with a great story.

One, Two, Three (1961) 3.5 Very funny and fast paced Billy Wilder comedy with James Cagney.

The Naked Island (1960) 2.5 Very minimalist with basically zero dialogue. Not my thing at all, but there were aspects I enjoyed.

Amazonia: The Catherine Miles Story aka White Slave (1985) 2 Ok Italian exploitation.

Late Autumn (1960) 3.5 Not my favorite Ozu as I wasn't crazy about the cast, but after 5 movies for me, any Ozu is good Ozu.

Go, Go, Second Time Virgin (1969) 3 65 minute pinky film that may be exploitive, but is definitely sad.

Inglourious Basterds (2009) Repeat viewing 4 Much improved on my 2nd viewing. I find it uneven, but there's so many great moments.

Kuroneko (1968) 3.5 Creepy Japanese horror featuring ghosts, samurai, and a black cat.

Fantastic Voyage (1966) 2.5 Not bad, but I thought it was a bit cheesy and dated.

The Lonely Wife (1964) 3 Good movie, but I did not care about the plight of the title character.

Inherit the Wind (1960) 4.5 Fantastic drama loaded with great performances.

Two Rode Together (1961) 2.5 Decent Western, but given the efforts of John Ford, Jimmy Stewart, and Richard Widmark, it should've been better.

Carry On... Up the Khyber (1968) 2.5 Funny British comedy.

1408 (2007) 2.5 Johnny Cusack and Sammy Jackson star in this horror that starts well, but then runs out of spark.

The Passion of Anna (1969) 4 Consistently powerful and visually beautiful film from director Bergman.

Secret Window (2007) 4 A great cast for a horror movie, and it kept me guessing through to the end.

Zombie (1979) 3.5 One of the best zombie films I've seen.

Breaking the Maya Code (David Lebrun, 2008) 4 - everyone should see this before submitting a MoFo documentaries list.
Hua yang de nian hua (short) (Wong Kar-wai, 2000) 2.5 - a 2-minute montage of footage from old Chinese films. It's a laudable ad for film-restoration efforts but is most interesting as a possible study for the gestural vocabular of In the Mood for Love.

It delivers on an action level. But the "emotional" moments I found to just be absolutely ridiculous and did not work for me. And then by the end, I was even bored by the action.

Ted 2 - Ted the talking bear fights for his civil rights in this sequel to the original stoner comedy starring Mark Wahlberg and Seth McFarlane. It has a LOT more of a plot than the first film, with Ted going to court over whether he is a person or a piece of property, and it has some smart, if crude, points to make. But with the added baggage of having to tell a somewhat complicated story, Ted 2 is a little less wall to wall funny than it's predecessor. Mark Wahlberg seems underused and the chemistry between the two Thunder Buddies takes a bit of a hit. But if you liked the first one, you'll like this one. It's a lot of fun.

Nightcrawler has a really fantastic performance from Jake Gyllenhaal, he plays a really odd character whose presence makes you actually uncomfortable because you never know quite where it's going to go. There are shades of Taxi Driver in this movie. It looks really great. But I guess I expected a bit more from it. I think the trailer spoiled it as it gave away most of what happens, which somewhat lessened the shock factor of the increasingly amoral actions of the main character. Part of it just wasn't quite convincing - just how much time the studio (as embodied by Rene Russo) are prepared to give him at the start, and how much power how quickly he seems to gain over them seem like a sort of Hollywood fantasy of success - even if it is a dark version. Sometimes other characters point out how bad the characters actions are, which seems completely unnecessary, that much is obvious. And the ending is messy. Maybe a 4-

Interstellar is a long journey, mostly an enjoyable one but a journey that when you get there you wonder whether you've been taken on the scenic route for no real reason and whether you might as well have stayed at home. There are just so many things in this film that don't really make sense. There are some great bits of concepts, and then some really stupid things. It starts really slowly, but the idea of exploring potentially habitable planets in space, and the dilemmas involved with the time delays is the interesting bit, and it doesn't really get explored enough. And then it gets bogged down in sentiment and mysticism. I saw a review of this somewhere which described it as some people travelling through a plot hole, which is fairly accurate. But if you can suspend your disbelief enough, it's a fairly enjoyable ride through a plot hole. 3+ Not really sure how to rate this.

Kingsmen: The Secret Service - Remember how FUN James Bond films used to be before someone decided that realistic and dour was the way to go? Matthew Vaughn and Mark Millar (The duo behind Kick Ass) do, and they amp that up to 100. Colin Firth (wow, really, Colin Firth?) is awesome as a British superspy tasked to find a new recruit for the Kingsmen, a covert spy ring that fights for queen and country without ever being seen, and Samuel L Jackson is cast brilliantly against type as a lisping, violence averse megalomaniac/billionaire with a plan to save the world. This will offend the more delicate filmgoer, most definitely, but I loved it.

The try-hard/woah, awesome aspect of the film is its most offensive side. The last scene is just horrible, too, but other than that it was OK. Nothing like as good as I'd been led to believe, but that's probably because I didn't like all the "woah, cool" bits that probably put it over the top for those who really enjoyed it.

Iroquois

Pretty much in agreement with honeykid on this one. Kingsman's whole "like James Bond but edgy, bruv" style meant that it's not so much offensive as disappointing. What campy fun there was went out the window with the revelation of Samuel L. Jackson's main plan, which means that the infamous church scene comes across as implicitly disturbing more so than "woah, awesome". There's also the fact that the film skims over the implications of its climatic carnage in order to resort to a cheap sex joke, which ends up being just one more reason why I think less and less of Kingsman the more I think about it.

Also, the constant references to existing spy movies were annoying.

Foxes
(Lyne, 1980)

I had to tick this up a bit when grading it due to the ridiculous level of nostalgia I have for films like this, Over the Edge, and Breaking Away. These late 70s coming-of-age flicks are great little time capsules to a time I recall fondly. This was Jodi Foster's last role before she went on hiatus to attend Yale. The characters all act in a realistic way when I think of that period in time, and I adored the scenes on the LA streets, which were gritty and smoggy, once again speaking to the period.

A classic in the genre, and a seminal film. This just never gets old.

Willow
(Howard, 1988)

http://hollywoodmetal.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/willow.jpg

2_5

Probably... NOT a classic in the genre. This flick is a bit of a slog. I was in the mood for some old, nostalgic fantasy, and also wanted to revisit some of James Horner's classic scores, and Willow happened to pop up on my streaming service as I was browsing. It is all so stilted and campy, I actually ended up turning it off before it was over. I can do with SOME camp, but the little brownie comic-relief guys really started to wear on my nerves after a while. Warwick Davis does the best he can with the material, and Kilmer does his best Val Kilmer impersonation, but the villain is weak and the film a bit overlong. Not very good. Surprisingly, the next film I list is in the same genre and was made a bit before Willow, but I found it much more enjoyable.

Krull
(Yates, 1983)

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_mpBGa4P5jUo/TNQEc_n_trI/AAAAAAAAFzU/X0GR9bsWkc4/s1600/krull5.jpg

3_5

Yes, more camp! Yeah, the idea for this film, which was a sort of hybrid between Lord of the Rings and Star Wars, might have been a bit misguided, and the film is certainly derivative of several other works of the era, but for all its flaws, I enjoyed this more than Willow. The comic relief is more tolerable, for one thing. I prefer the premise of the film, with the Alien fortress moving randomly every morning to stay hidden etc. The world building and set design were clearly worked on as a labor of love, and I can tell the film makers really wanted to make something special, but perhaps got in a bit over their heads. The fact that the film was released in the summer of 1983 did not help, with films like Return of the Jedi as competition, this thing had a lot working against it. Still, the moving fortress, the changling, the glass spider, and some compositions and sets that seem like homage to a Jordorowski flick, Krull sets itself apart from similar films of the time with its clearly defined vision, even if we have seen much of it before. Oh, and that James Horner guy? This score is one of his best, hands down.

Inside Out - This one is not just Best Animated Picture material, I'd like to see this up for Best Picture, it's THAT good. 5
The Town that Dreaded Sundown - Meta sequel to the old 70's slasher film, from the makers of American Horror Story. Intriguing and gory, but the ending disappoints slightly. 3
Dead Silence - Silliness about ventriloquist dummies and ghosts, fun but not that great. Gains a point for Donnie Wahlberg's character and for a ballsy ending. 2.5
The Exorcist - A classic horror, but hard to enjoy while my roommate is playing guitar throughout the entire movie....5, normally.

Everyone's favorite sleuth is back for what plays like an extended episode. And therein lies the rub. It made me miss the glory days of the show, whetting the appetite for more, but perhaps not delivering on all levels. This really did seem like they were firing up the show again, especially the final few scenes, which had me scratching my head as to why they would go to the trouble to set Veronica up for more content, when at the time, none was solidly planned. I hear rumors of a sequel now, but i wonder if Kristin Bell is fully engaged and ready to do it. At points in the film, she seemed to drift, with an odd look on her face as she perhaps was wondering what the hell she was doing back in Neptune. I see interviews in which she claims she would be "down for anything", but I wonder if anything will come of it, be it a new mini-series on cable, a Netflix show, or another feature film. This film just made me miss the show.

The Angriest Man in Brooklyn
(Robinson, 2014)

https://pmcvariety.files.wordpress.com/2013/11/robin-williams-mila-kunis.jpg?w=670&h=377&crop=1

For a while, it seemed like Mila Kunis might break out and elevate herself from just a passable actress with a pretty face to someone with real skills. At this point, I think it's time to give up on that. They girl just does not have what it takes. Even with the incredibly skilled Williams sitting across from her, she lurches through lines and histrionics in a pretty cringe-worthy way, bringing this flick to its knees. Williams is good, but his role feels a lot like Douglas in Falling Down combined with Dabney Coleman in Short Time. The film is all over the place in tone, and put together in such a way that makes it tough for the viewer to lock in emotionally. William's character is so nasty, I found it tough to care what happened to him. Genre blends like this, in this case a black comedy mixed with an after-school special family drama situation, can be pulled off, but this is put together in a clunky way with an off-putting main character. An extra layer of sadness is laid over the top, with the specter of William's actual death by suicide being echoed by some of the film's events. This film is supposed to be a black comedy, but it is just a bummer.

Chappie - I am very torn on this one. On one hand, it's got an interesting story about a police robot gaining sentience and how his surroundings shape who he becomes, but on the other hand, it's sort of a mixture of Short Circuit and Robocop, isn't it? There are things I loved, like Sharlto Copley's performance as the titular character, and Neill Blomkamp's direction, but then there are things I don't, like the supporting actors (who apparently are musicians of some sort in South Africa? Whoever they are, they are off putting and weird.), and the film's ending, which pushed my suspension of disbelief past where I was willing to go, and kind of went against all the moving, emotionally potent scenes from earlier by forcing a happy (and ridiculous) ending.

Once again, my lady wanted to watch some old horror, and for some reason settled on this. This isn't too terrible, with a fairly decent who-done-it mystery associated with the murders, but aside from Jamie Lee Curtis, most of the players are pretty rough, including a somewhat goofy David Copperfield as a prime suspect. I have certainly seen better, but I think I have also seen much worse.

Four teens set off to see Kiss live in Detroit in 1978. Decent enough, but lacks the authentic 70s feel of something like Foxes or Over the Edge, which were actually made in the 70s. Good for a couple oof laughs, but overall, fairly lackluster.

Eyes Wide Shut

Kubrick's treatise on trust set against a backdrop of secret societies and intrigue. Dreamlike in its execution, this is one of Kubrick's more obtuse pictures, which works in its favor for the most part, but falls flat in places, as well. My fiance felt there was too much focus on the Illuminati for the film to end the way it does, so she definitely didn't like it. I had seen it before, and having arrived at plenty of dead ends when I tried to puzzle out the cryptic Illuminati story, at this point, I just let the dream do its thing as i let the music and imagery wash over me. I still like this one.

These are some moving images made by Eadweard Muybridge. As you can see, they preceed the, what we know as, first film ever made. However, calling these films is going as far as calling rapidly changing pieces of paper with some sketches on them a movie. It's not cinematograph, anyway. It's a novelty called zoopraxiscope. No matter how you call it, these are a must see, if you think of yourself as of a cinephile. It should take like five minutes to watch all of them, of which 4 minutes will be you searching for them on YouTube. Anyway, the one that's really worth mentioning is The Kiss, which features two delightful nude (!!!) ladies performing a kiss (!!!) in the first lesbian (!!!) scene in history of (non-)cinema. A must-see for everyone! What really struck me is that these 'films' can be seen as GIFs today. Something Muybridge never ever dreamt of.

Dracula Hammer series:

http://38.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_ltkpyx3GoL1qdx4k4o1_500.gif
Did somebody say: 'Blood pancakes'?

Dracula [Horror of Dracula] (1958) - rating_4
The Brides of Dracula (1960) - rating_3_5
Dracula: Prince of Darkness (1966) - rating_3_5
Dracula Has Risen from the Grave (1968) - rating_3_5
Taste the Blood of Dracula (1970) - rating_3_5
Scars of Dracula (1970) - rating_3_5

Still a bunch of Dracula Hammer films left, but from what I've seen so far I can already tell that I like Christopher Lee's Dracula much more than Lugosi's one. The first installment is actually the one I liked the best. It has the always good Cushing as van Helsing kicking vampire butts since... I don't know. Just for a long time. The second one has Cushing, too, but sadly, Christopher Lee was replaced by another guy (he's not Dracula in this film anyway, just an 'average' vampire). The third one introduces Lee back, but sadly there's no more Cushing. I know the duo will come back in next installments, but I didn't get there yet. So far, some hilarious (I didn't laugh, just the ideas are hilarious) parts I've seen recently. One of them starts with a bat vomiting blood on Dracula's dead remainings and that brings him back to life! LOL! There are some other ridiculous scenes in these films, but it's all good fun, and surprisingly so, the series never get under the level of being good and entertaining.

Frankenstein Hammer series:

https://38.media.tumblr.com/cb1ad87524f0d13e50a0e08318c15b45/tumblr_inline_nqbg0qZDes1ro0p3m_500.gif
Best Hammer intro ever!

The Curse of Frankenstein (1957) - rating_3_5
The Revenge of Frankenstein (1958) - rating_3_5
The Evil of Frankenstein (1964) - rating_3_5
Frankenstein Created Woman (1967) - rating_3_5
Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed (1969) - rating_4

One Hammer Frankenstein movie left! Just one and I will be done with these series. Pretty good, too, only that surprisingly it's the penultimate installment I found the best. Every one of these films has Peter Cushing as the lead playing Baron Frankenstein (perhaps his best role!). They always end with a cliffhanger, in which Frankenstein is allegedly dead, but he always somehow survives, so he can still experiment with human bodies in the next episode. All the films in the series, just like Dracula, are very good and there are no crap films there. I also watched the original Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein, but am not sure if I already wrote about them here. In case not, I give them both 3.5 stars.

Mummy films:

http://38.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lhq63bXacK1qcay1ao1_500.gif
This is the kind of face you can't say no to.

The Mummy (1932) - rating_3
The Mummy (1959) - rating_3

The weakest of the monster features I've been watching lately. The original one has Karloff being incredibly intelligent and cunning for a mummy, while the Hammer reimagination has a crazy Egyptian controlling the mummy that is simply Christopher Lee kicking everybody's ass. The scenes of him kicking in the door to rapidly catch a guy and strangle him, or breaking the balcony window to attack Peter Cushing were incredibly well done. Sadly, the ancient Egypt flashback scenes were not that good and boring.

Remordernist films:

http://www.filmink.com.au/public/uploads/img/news/f668502a3438adbedf44.jpg
Why don't we make our own cinema movement? MoFo-ernism!

Shooting at the Moon (2003) - rating_3
Youngblood (1995) - rating_2_5
So Tell Me Again (2009) - rating_2
Self Portrait (2002) - rating_3
Days Gone Not Forgotten (2011) - rating_3

Okay, so there's that 'new' movement in cinema I just learnt about recently. Basically, they hate moderinism and post-modernism and want more emotional and spiritual meaning in cinema, so they just made this movement and it's mostly short films. They're in no way masterpieces, or even great films, but interesting enough. It's worth reading their manifesto, in which Dogme 95 and Kubrick are called stupid and boring, respectively, among others. They also want Japanese philosophy of mono no aware to be in their films just like it's in Ozu films. Interesting stuff. They often shoot films in black'n'white and use some very good punk music as soundtrack. Shooting at the Moon is basically built of these beautiful songs I had to listen to again after I've watched the film, so even if these films (and the whole movement) is all built of mediocre films, at least they introduced me to some good music, so it's always a new discovery. :)

Is this a pre-crab-crawl all deathcore sh*tty bands use nowadays? Haha. Lovely.

Stop Making Sense (1984) - rating_4 (Incredible concert! One of the best I've ever seen! And I'm not even a fan of this band, I don't know any of their songs, but the sheer energy and fun at stage was enough to make me fall in love with them. The ideas are incredible. It starts with the frontman alone at the stage, playing acoustic guitar with a simple beat from a tape recorder. Then, the bassist (that lady is really charming and she even sings one of the songs!) kicks in and they make a duo, then a big platform with a drum set on it is introduced and then some other stuff, like a crazy black man with his hippie tribal drum set. They all have a lot of fun performing the songs. Loved to see the black ladies mimick the frontman's moves, the black drummer saying 'f*ck this' and simply having fun, interacting with the audience and running from one player to the other. Then, the leader performs a very weird dance with a lamp and then decides to run around the stage for no apparent reason, hence the title. This is simply the paragon of music concert. I wish more bands had so much fun at scene.)
La coiffeuse (1905) - rating_3 (A kinky refreshment! An erotic film from 1905!)
Voci nel tempo [Voices Through Time] (1996) - rating_4 (Who needs words, if there are beautiful images?)
My Name Is Oona (1969) - rating_2_5 (The title of the film repeated over and over by a little girl with some decent visuals to go by. Mediocre avantgarde.)

Voci nel tempo.

Assault on Precinct 13 (1976) - rating_4 (Already wrote about it in another thread! Awesome flick!)
Hitler – Eine Karriere [Hitler, A Career] (1977) - rating_4 (A very interesting documentary about Adolf Hitler. Highly recommended to all people who take keen interest in history.)
Junkopia (1981) - rating_3_5 (The director of La Jetee and Sans soleil made a lot of short films, like that cute cat film and what not. This time it's some sculptures made of junk by some hippies. The film has some post-apo feels to it and has a very nice mood of impending doom, even though all we see is some weird trash constructions.)
World of Tomorrow (2015) - rating_4 (The newest and maybe even the best Don Hertzfeldt film! A very powerful time-(and mind-)travel short.)

Dans le noir du temps (2002) - rating_3_5 (Godard's pseudo-intellectual mumbling for ten minutes. I like this kind of pretensiousness.)
Zombi 2 [Zombie] (1979) - rating_3 (Well, I'm not a fan of Fulci's non-giallo-nor-spaghetti films. This one is better than The Beyond, but still decent at best.)
自殺サークル [Suicide Club] (2002) - rating_4 (Sion Sono used to make slow arthouse flicks, but later decided to delve into post-modernism. I enjoy his later films more than his early artsy stuff. This is the film that made him famous and it already has the feeling of his later features, such as Strange Circus, Love Exposure and Guilty of Romance.)
Khual Yaang: To Summon The Spirits (2009) - rating_3_5 (Artsy!!!)

[I]Something is causing people want to kill themselves. An interesting take on a Japanese suicide problem in Sion Sono's Suicide Club.

Der Todesking [The Death King] (1990) - rating_3_5 (Perhaps Buttgereit's most mature film. It's not as gorey nor brutal as Nekromentik or Schramm, but still manages to get to the point. Basically, it's about suicides, but there are some other meanings to it, as well. It has a scene of a guy watching Ilsa: The She Wolf of SS (MovieGal's beloved film), then blowing his girlfriend's head and then hanging a frame on the splash of blood on the white wall. ARTSY!)
To Parsifal (1963) - rating_3 (MOAR ARTSY!!!)
Industrial Symphony No. 1: The Dream of the Broken Hearted (1990) - rating_2_5 (I love both Lynch and Cruise, but something just didn't work here)
Begone Dull Care (1949) - rating_3 (Brakhage ripped this guy off!!!)

Valse brillante de Chopin (1936) - rating_2_5
Le coin des enfants [Children's Corner] (1936) - rating_2 (These are just some early music videos.)
The Wicker Man (1973) - rating_4 (Already wrote about it in another thread. The film gets even scarier if you imagine Lord Summerisle being in fact MovieGal and the nosy policeman me.)
太極1 從零開始 [Tai Chi Zero] (2012) - rating_4
太極2 英雄崛起 [Tai Chi Hero] (2012) - rating_3_5 (Modern wuxia? Can it be good? Of course! This is a steampunk wuxia to be more precise! The second part is just as good, so I don't even know why I didn't rate it 4 stars, too. Oh, and this is supposed to be a trilogy. I'm eagerly awaiting the final installment.)

http://nerdreactor.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/tai_chi-sc3.jpg
Steampunk wuxia? Glorious!

Casa de lava [Down to Earth] (1994) - rating_3_5 (Really wasn't in a mood for this, but gave it 3.5 in a credit. I thought about 3, but the idea of bluedeed's rant was enough to make me eventually raise the rating to 3.5.)
Flora (1989) - rating_2_5 (30 second film! All hail the short movies!)
Il Gattopardo [The Leopard] (1963) - rating_4 (Beautiful sceno- and cinematography. Lancaster, Delon and Cardinale were all amazing and the last two were hot as well! )
スウィングガールズ [Swing Girls] (2004) - rating_3 (I am the King of Japanese Mainstreamness! This is a comedy film about some students creating a Big Band Jazz Orchestra. The final spectacle made me raise the rating by half a star. At the beginning I thought I'm not gonna survive this film, it felt stupid, jokes felt flat and everything felt like it's directed to Japanese high school students. And you know what? It's basically true. However, with time, the jokes started to make me laugh a little bit and I was really rooting for the girls (there was one boy, too). Not that bad in the end. The mannequin kissing in the elevator was the funniest scene in the movie. LOL.)

Masterpiece marathon: 5 days - 5 masterpieces

The Ritual.

Toutes les nuits [Every Night] (2001) - rating_4_5 (Already wrote about this helluva film in Rate The Last Movie You Seen thread. Decided to watch more from the director. The very next day I watched...)
Le monde vivant [The Living World] (2003) - rating_4_5 (... this one. His second, chronologically. The whole thing is about the power of words. The guy has a shirt and jeans, but he refers to himself as a knight, so he indeed is a knight. The only item that would actually suggest he is one is his sword, but since he (and other people in the film) claim he is a knight, he freakin' is a knight! He also has a dog... lion, that is. He is the Lion Knight, after all. So, he has a dog companion following him, but since everyone says it is a lion, it indeed is a lion. There's a very nice medieval story with an ogre and princesses that have to be freed and the whole thing is beautiful. So, all in all, I say it is a masterpiece. Wait, it indeed is, no need to say it is not! It's not a film! It's a play! Well, I'm pretty close, too. The guy was a playwright before. Hell, this film is a pig! A big, bloasted pig! I like me some pig, figures.)
水の中の八月 [August in the Water] (1995) - rating_4_5 (The movie starts casually. There are two guys and a girl, who loves high dive. Then things get more complitated and the movie's mood just becomes incredible! It really is some mythical stuff right here! I don't know, but at times I had Mothman Prophecies feels from it. It is the only film I've seen that I could say has a similar atmosphere, but while Richard Gere's mediocrity quickly loses mood and becomes dull, this Japanese gem gets more and more freaky! The ending is incredibly beautiful! It almost made me cry. All in all, the best alien film, without aliens!)
式日 [Ritual] (2000) - rating_4_5 (This is a film based on a book and you know what? Steven Seagull's (pun intended) daughter wrote it and is the lead here! You know what? She's a better actress than her father. You know what? She must be a damn good writer, too, because this film is incredible. You know what? The movie is directed by Hideaki Anno, the director of Neon Genesis Evangelion anime (Guap probably starts looking for this movie at this point). You know what? The music is beautiful, but, sadly, was never released on CD. You know what? The film has an incredible scene I would compare to a certain Mirror's scene. No reason for that. Just both are amazing and I felt like comparing these two. You know what? The movie's ending made my cry. You know what? I don't wnat to say anything about the film itself, because it's so good to find out everything by yourself. You know what? Because I don't.)
카페 느와르 [Café Noir] (2009) - rating_4_5 (That's a pretty weird Korean film. The titles kick in in the middle of this 3 hour long flick and after that the film's atmosphere almost completely changes. It also becomes a black'n'white picture for some reason. The second part is superior, anyways, but the film is so good. I mean, it just doesn't feel like a masterpiece and you don't feel like watching one during the film, but then it ends and you say to yourself: "Wow!". And it feels like a glorious film. It's quite complex, introduces a lot of characters, draws from other filmmakers and writers (Dostoyevsky is the most obvious, but there's more). It also has a scene of a guy saying his wife (or maybe it was daughter, can't remember) was killed by a monster in 2006!!! (obvious reference to Korean film The Host I haven't seen yet) . There's some more, but can't remember. Anyway, the ending is so beautiful and what happens to the, what seems to be, protagonist is so heart-breaking I just can't forget about it.)

Took me 4 hours to complete this post.

The Hustler 3.5
This was a darker film than I expected, certainly not your average sports movie. Paul Newman was good, it was well made and interesting, although I felt a little detached from it. I found it hard to follow the pool and the betting and what was actually going on in the games, but to an extent that was irrelevant, it was the greed and talent and addiction that were the important things. I was slightly dubious about the whole well worn 'sacrificing of the female character in order to teach the male character about what's important in life' trope, but it was made clear that she had her own demons and weaknesses just as he did, and I liked the parallel between them, that they're essentially both prostituting themselves to Bert Gordon in the end. I've no doubt it will show up on the 60s list although it wouldn't have made my personal top 25.

Anna Karenina (2012) 2.5
I don't know what to make of this. At times the staging seemed inspired, and yet it was so inconsistent. Perhaps it would have worked better for a film of something known as a play, for an adaptation of Anna Karenina it seemed reductive. It didn't help that the scope of it was reduced to a melodrama around the main love triangle with the sub plots and the interactions with the minor characters glossed over. Completely miscast as well. I think Keira Knightley can be a good actress but she didn't quite convince as Anna and Aaron Taylor Johnson looked like he was performing in Wes Anderson's Anna Karenina which was completely distracting. Jude Law was very good, though.

Ma Nuit Chez Maud 2.5
I think the best thing I can say is that this just wasn't my sort of film. Not because it's slow (although it is), but because I find films in which people with no real problems pontificate endlessly on philosophy and the nature of love to be excruciating. They talk endlessly about love but I never really get a sense that they actually feel it. I find it stifling to watch, like sitting at a dinner party with insufferable people and not being able to speak. Ma Nuit Chez Maud looks alright although not great. At least it was better than Claire's Knee.

Good Morning (Ozu, 1959)

http://s3.amazonaws.com/criterion-production/stills/131990-b5be64d8fd244ed2c5f5bb75c30d2fe6/Good_Morning_Film_Page_original.jpg

The only other Ozu film I've seen was released in the same year as this charming comedy- Floating Weeds. I actually found it rather weak and myself unattached to the characters. The experience for Good Morning was the opposite. One of the most soothing film viewings I could ask for. From the start I became completely absorbed in this world of a middle class Japanese suburb. Nothing dramatic happens, no turning points, just the simple life of a handful of families. And I couldn't ask for anything else. Many characters I would often find annoying didn't bother me here, and in fact I liked all of them. The whiny children, the gossipy neighbors, these are usually qualities that make a character a nuisance. In Good Morning I loved all the characters. Especially the grandmother, who was an absolute badass.

Despite being an immature comedy with most the humor based off farts- which was rather funny- Ozu creates an important simple statement on communications and understanding. There's nothing to profound in what is being said but it's simply humanist and adds a great charm to this film. The film has a perfect balance between showing the trivial conflicts of the children and of the adults. Despite it being clear that the characters have greater problems in their lives Ozu points the camera at two petty ones. Simple, calming, absorbing, meaningful, and beautiful. A truly great film.

The Amazing Spider Man II
(Webb, 2014)

2_5

http://screenrant.com/wp-content/uploads/emma-stone1.jpg

Restraint. The best comic films exercise restraint, and this one failed in that regard. I did like some aspects of this one, but too many times, it slipped into cartoon land, failing to stay grounded in its characters. Either embrace the camp and run with it, or go gritty and post-modern: combining the two rarely works. The Gwen Stacy stuff was a bright spot (not thematically, but in regards to execution), so I enjoyed the character play there. Neither villain was fleshed out enough or developed enough to work for me.

I pretty much agree with you that the Amazing Spider-Man 2 is lame and definitely that the villains aren't well developed (also The Spider-man backstory is just sort of played out for me), but cartoonyness per se doesn't bother me in superhero films (I'm in the minority on the third Raimi film, for example). Also, I'm pretty sure camp is post-modern.

Visual storytelling genius Michael Powell teamed up with scripter Leo Marks to make this audacious film which predated Psycho by months and was lambasted by the British critics as a "sexual snuff" film at the time of its release. In fact, after making one more film in England, this film's notoriety basically exiled the Master to Australia. Today, many of those same critics call it a masterpiece, and whatever you think about it, it's one of the most original and bizarre flicks ever made. Peeping Tom almost ranks up there with The Red Shoes as Powell's most-all-encompassing fever dream. When I say fever, I mean that the entire film is embued with red lights and it undoubtedly inspired such directors as Mario Bava and Dario Argento in the use of their color pallette and their subjective camerawork.
http://verdoux.files.wordpress.com/2007/10/peeping-tom-moira-shearer-b.jpg
The thing about this Powell movie which got him into so much trouble was that no matter how cinematic his images were, the critics only saw prostitutes, murder, sick-and-twisted father/son relationships, unhealthy preoccupation with sex and death, and here's the kicker: the fact that Powell himself played the twisted scientist father and had his own son play his son at an early age as a victim of his father's abuse. The psychological underpinnings of the main character's actions, which are far more developed than those of Norman Bates, didn't count for much for the lynch mob critical community, even though Hitch came along a few months later and made them come up with excuses for him. The problem is that no matter what Powell accomplished in his film, he didn't film the flourishes that Hitch did with a far-more unexplainable story (even though some "psychiatrist" tries to explain Norman's motivations at the end of Psycho). Norman Bates is a sympathetic character, but there's no way he's more sympathetic than Mark Lewis in Peeping Tom. Even so, it's quite an accomplishment for both Powell and Hitch to put out such films so close together in the prehistoric year of 1960. It's just sad that the proven genius Powell was turned into a pariah while the proven genius Hitchcock became a millionaire.

Some thoughts on Trainwreck, MV?

I really didn't know what to expect, since I'd heard almost nothing about it going in. (I saw it because Funny Face wanted to see it.) I guess it was supposed to be something of a raunchy comedy, but it was actually shockingly tame. I don't recall a single frontal nude scene and the language wasn't all that bad either. Except for Amy's promiscuity, it viewed to me pretty much like a standard Rom Com. Not bad, but not something that's going to end up in my personal collection.

Haha, this set might be ever so slightly harsher than my usual distribution, but I do believe most films fall along the 2.5/3 star rating. And I still like most of these films, the only one I could truly say I disliked in this set is Love is Colder than Death. I don't know that people "don't utilize" the full system, I think they don't view the ratings the same as you. To me a 2.5/5 or 50% is equivalent to an F, and not something I'd ever give to a movie I like.

donniedarko

Ok, if we're looking it mathematically than I suppose it can be viewed that way, and of course everyone's rating system is their own. I look at 2.5 as average which most movies are. Mark once told me a few years ago to look at ratings as a bell curve, which has resonated with me and is close to how my rating distribution look. I'd look at a 2.5 as more of a C+.

Mr Minio
07-25-15, 06:19 PM
Here's my rating curve (always a funny word, since it's very similar to kurwa in Polish :P):

I tried to artificially make it a bell curve once by being harsh with my ratings and changing the ratings of some films, but with terrible results still visible today.

Does that mean you don't bother giving anything lower than a 2.5/5?

Anyway, I think a major part of what dictates my ratings is just how much there is to like about a film and, if there is nothing significantly likeable, then I have to determine how much I hate it. 2.5 and 2 still mean that there is something of worth (though not enough to make it a genuinely good movie), 1.5 would be boring, a 1 would be all-around awful, and a 0.5 would be irredeemable. There's a fair bit of nuance to any ratings that are lower than 3/5 (especially since my initial ratings are out of 4 and only go higher than 4 if they really earn it, often after repeat viewings) and if people think that means I'm being really harsh then so be it.

Miss Vicky
07-25-15, 11:03 PM
Does that mean you don't bother giving anything lower than a 2.5/5?

No. Definitely not. I've handed out very low ratings plenty of times. (Off the top of my head: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Platform, K-On, PMMM: Eternal, Winter's Tale)

It means if I like a movie, it's going to get something higher than 2.5. Though I don't typically rate anything lower than 2, as I can usually find something to appreciate about a film, even if the film still fails for me overall.

Ant Man - Superheroic action comedy by Marvel Studios, this time focusing on Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), an ex-con trying to get his daughter back, but who is enlisted by retired cold war superhero Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) to become the new Ant Man (Who has the power to shrink to the size of an ant, and can also control the insects with a special transmitter), and stop a greedy scientist from turning his research over to Hydra. Paul Rudd is hilarious, as is his sidekick played by Michael Pena, and seeing Michael Douglas in a movie again is always welcome. This one is more in the vein of Guardians of the Galaxy, lots of laughs along with the heroics, part of me really wants to see Rudd's Ant Man in the same film with Chris Pratt's Star Lord. They both seem to share a more light hearted corner of the Marvel Universe than Captain America and Iron Man. 4

Still one of the most realistic films about ******* NY teens. A couple of actors started their careers here, and the director famously went and hung out with random skate kids before making this, even inviting some to be in the final film once he got production going. The result is an unflinching look at teen street life in the mid 90s. Controversial then, and I presume it still is today. I still hate Leo Fitzpatrick's Telly with a passion.

I sort of take a similar approach by splitting the difference between how well-made it is and how much enjoyment I got out of it. This explains why The Room and Troll 2 both get 3 from me because they are 0.5 in terms of quality but 5 in terms of enjoyment.

The Great Silence was really interesting (I've never seen a western that ends quite like that!) but also heavy handed.

Sleeping Beauty should have been called Bumbling Fairies, since that's who it's about. That's not really a bad thing - at times I thought Cinderella was about the mice and I liked that movie - but my wife and I watched half in a Mystery Science Theater mode. (I especially liked when they put the whole kingdom to sleep so that nobody would notice how badly they screwed up). I straight-up liked what they did with the ballet music. Unfortunately, even at just over an hour it feels a little too long since it's basically a rehash of earlier, much-better-animated Disney films.

Yes, I watched It Follows again with my brother. F/X is a crackerjack thriller which always plays out better than you think it can possibly be.

The Great Silence actually has two different endings.

Insomnia (Skjoldbjærg, 1997)

https://s3.amazonaws.com/criterion-production/stills/132048-b5c852f9b0185fdb25973bd0c20aabfc/Insomnia_Film_Page_original.jpg

Wow. Today I wanted to watch something real. I truly got it with this stellar debut feature from Skjoldbjærg. I watched an American made film of his recently, Prozac Nation. I found the film- while flawed- slightly under appreciated. Insomnia is completely under appreciated though. One of the greatest crime thrillers ever made, the film follows a sociopath detective who makes a grave mistake by accidentally shooting his partner. Played by Stellan Skarsgård in a convincing and gripping performance. The film holds tension throughout. Every single scene, even the most uneventful are intense. And all somehow equally so. A scene where Detective Engstrom is struggling to sleep is just as intense as the scene where he meets the suspected killer he's searching for. And this is somehow despite the predictability. I knew what would happen at the end of each scene from the initial entrance, I pretty much knew how the whole film would play out after the first 25 minutes. Yet Skjoldbjærg and Skarsgård team up to make it surprisingly gripping. Proving how important atmosphere is to making a great film.

http://oliblog.blogg.de/files/2012/07/insomnia_1997_scr.jpg

The film is highly symbolic. The efforts of Detective Engstrom are bothered by the bright sun peering into his room. Unlike most horror, thrillers, and mysteries Insomnia does not rely on darkness, but instead light. Everything happens in broad daylight, and even in the final scene where everything goes dark except for Detective Engstrom eyes- the "light" in the scene is the only chilling part about it. There's one scene in particular that I think has the most symbolic image. When Detective Engstrom enters a "suspects" room to continue on his path of lies there's an image of Freud glaring next to him. "The Truth Will set you free" is a Freud quote that immediately comes to mind, and clearly the detective is not free while he's continuing his path of deceiving those around him. I don't think I'm over analyzing this either, because in this film every prop is important and has some reference.

I have not seen Nolan's remake, nor do I plan too. I'm much more likely to just rewatch this film. As I mentioned I was looking for something real, and I believe that's much more achievable with a cast of nobodies compared to a star studded cast of Al Pacino, Robin Williams, and Hillary Swank. I think I will stick to Skarsgård, Mathiesen, and Bjørn Floberg. In this cold, extremely graphic yet tasteful, thriller in a Norwegian town where the sun never sets- which I now realize is terrifying.

July, 2015 movies watched-

The General (1926) 4 Not at all the straight out comedy I expected.

The Prowler (1981) 3 Pretty average slasher except for a fantastic collection of kills.

Throne of Blood (1957) 4 Mifune is super intense in this, and it looks beautiful.

Some Like it Hot (1959) 4.5 Can't believe it took me so long to see this, it's a lot of fun.

John Wick (2014) 3+ Keanu Reeves kills just about everyone in this above average action flick.

Wolf Children (2012) Repeat viewing 4+ One of my favorite animations.

Punishment Park (1971) 4.5 Very intense and powerful documentary style film.

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954) 2.5+ Not a fan of the classical musicals in general, but this was an easy, enjoyable watch.

Dumplings (2004) 3.5- The dumplings are made from baby fetuses; that's the only information needed.

The Equalizer (2014) 3.5- The action is average but the rest of the movie very good.

Freaks (1932) Repeat viewing 4.5- So unique with a horrific finale.

The Band Wagon (1953) 2.5 Classic musical that's fun and lively with beautiful color.

My Night at Maud's (1969) 3.5 My third Rohmer, and I've liked them all. Yet, I still don't know what to make of them.

The Trial (1962) 2.5+ Good look and fairly interesting, but that only took me so far.

The Others (2001) 3.5 One of the better ghost story movies I've seen.

Massacre at Central High (1976) 3 Low budget revenge film that is good fun.

Platform (2000) 3.5+ A little out of my realm, but a very impressive movie that I enjoyed.

Stolen (2012) 2 Very mediocre, but it does have Nic Cage.

Nekromantik (1987) 2- The necrophilia scenes were good but that's it.

Before Sunrise (1995) Repeat viewing 2.5+ A few positives, but the characters annoy me.

Johnny Guitar (1954) 3+ With Joan Crawford as it's star, this good Western has a unique flavor.

Stripes (1981) Repeat viewing 5 Long time favorite of mine.

Black Snake Moan (2006) 3+ Sexy southern style and good performances from Sam Jackson and Christina Ricci.

Dancer in the Dark (2000) 4 Somewhat flawed I thought, but still powerful and featuring an amazing performance from Bjork.

It Follows (2014) 3.5 Great atmosphere and musical score makes it a must see for horror fans.

Bad Meat (2011) 2+ Ok for fans of low grade horror.

Megan is Missing (2011) 3 Upsetting film that has value as a cautionary tale.

3:10 to Yuma (1957) 3.5- Very good all around Western.

The ABC's of Death 2 (2014) 2 Out of 26 segments, only a handful are good.

A Good Old Fashioned Orgy (2011) 3 I'm a sucker for comedies like this.

Being John Malkovich (1999) Repeat viewing 4.5- Probably my favorite quirky movie.

The Quiet Man (1952) 4.5 John Wayne showed me a side I never saw of him before in this great film.

Anatomy of a Murder (1959) 4.5 It has to be one of the greatest courtroom movies.

Elevator to the Gallows (1958) 2.5 Great style and story, but no spark.

The Tale of Princess Kaguya (2013) 3 Nice, enjoyable animation; I just won't remember it.

Hardcore (1979) 3.5- George C. Scott plays a dad searching the seedy California underworld for his missing teenage daughter.

Gaurdians of the Galaxy (2014) 3.5 I prefer movies set on regular earth, but I can't deny all the fun.

Sherlock Jr. (1924) Repeat viewing 4+ Endearing, funny, and creative, I think it's pretty brilliant.

Angels with Dirty Faces (1938) 4 It doesn't get much cooler than an old gangster movie with Cagney and Bogart.

Bounty Killer (2013) 3 Apocolyptic grindhouse that is good fun.

High Noon (1952) 4+ A great Western without the usual cliches.

Glad to see Wolf Children held up on a repeat viewing. I'm going to rewatch it myself for the HoF very soon as well.

Awesome to see you more or less liked both Dumplings and The Others from my horror list!

Glad to see those positive ratings for movies like The General, Sherlock Jr, Dancer in the Dark and It follows!

I felt about the same as you with The Equalizer.

I'm still sad that you aren't a fan of Before Sunrise, but I won't quit saying you might enjoy Sunset and especially Midnight a whole lot more. They a more mature and emotionally heavier. They don't have much of that "puppy love" you commented on with the first film. :p

Vacation - Ed Helms stars as the son of original Vacationer Clark Griswold in this surprisingly funny sequel (Is it a sequel? It's not a remake of the original, nor does it pretend that the original didn't exist...hmmm) to the classic 80's black comedy. Helms plays a grown up Rusty, who's family is falling apart around him despite his best efforts. His wife (Christina Applegate) is bored with their marriage, and his two children are terrors. So Rusty decides to do as his father did, and pack the fam into a rental car and drive to Walley World, thinking that some time together will cure all their ills. The film is hilarious, dark, awkward, and raunchy, and it does it's predecessor proud, while finding it's own sense of humor, it's own comic rhythms, and some great cameos. 4

Glad to see a positive review of Vacation

I'm surprised to see someone even giving a positive anything to that. Although some people say it's a reboot which it clearly isn't and it clearly is a sequel since it takes place years after the first movie. But the humor in it doesn't appeal to me. I might watch it 'eventually' on Netflix or the like. There are some scenes and such I have glimpsed that seem somewhat silly and laughable. I am not the person to judge a movie before I see it and put it down like most people on here, but it is most obviously FAR from the vacation we all are used to seeing. And even seeing the trailers, even the Red band version, it just looks like your ordinary every day poop joke, sex joke teenage comedy. But I will make my actual judgement when I see it someday.

Movies watched from Jul 15 to today:

Time and Tide (2000) - rating_3_5 - experimental static shots, pretty enjoyable for contemplative cinema admirers
满清十大酷刑 [A Chinese Torture Chamber Story] (1994) - rating_4 - an incredible mix of sex, torture and comedy, made me laugh, even though I rarely laugh at films, the ultimate exercise in film awesomeness, plus delightful bodies of Chinese girls
Woyzeck (1994) - rating_4 - if you're a movie maniac you can watch it and compare it to Herzog's version, obviously they differ greatly. One could say the Hungarian film is made in Bela Tarr style, but in fact it's made in Hungarian cinema style. It's much more depressing, bleak, sad... much better than Herzog's version, only Kinski's acting is superior
Mary and Max (2009) - rating_4 - already wrote about it in another thread. Yes, I didn't find it funny, but oh boy, was it sad.
Variations on a Cellophane Wrapper (1970) - rating_4 - experimental cinema at its best! Gets better and better, but also more and more chaotic, eye-hurting, colourful etc. Only for experimental cinema lovers.
Ved Faenglets Port [Temptations of a Great City] (1911) - rating_4 - if you thought Abyss was the best Danish film of this decade, in which Danish film industry was one of the powerful, you were wrong... or maybe, right. Subjective. But I loved this one even more.
La vie et la passion de Jésus Christ [The Life and Passion of Christ] (1903) - rating_3_5 - an impressive attempt to squeeze the whole story of Jesus Christ in a 40-odd minutes long silent film.
Das Mädchen ohne Vaterland (1912) - rating_3_5 - Asta Nielsen invented acting in Abyss and now continues her journey as the queen of Danish cinema!
はたらく一家 [The Whole Family Works] (1939) - rating_3_5 - sadly, I slowed down my chronological watching of Naruse filmography, but I'm still moving forward. Slow pace is still a pace.
Záhrada [The Garden] (1995) - rating_4 - the most country homely film ever, also a glorious rip-off of Tarkosky's Zerkalo at the end
Von morgens bis Mitternacht [From Morn to Midnight] (1922) - rating_4 - one of the greatest German Expressionism films ever made yet practically unknown! The best ending ever!
Rien que les heures [Nothing But Time] (1926) - rating_4 - Experimental City Symphony Cinema Pur Essay Film. If you wanna see it after you read these words, then go for it. If you don't, well, perhaps it's not a film for you.
ჯიმ შვანთე (მარილი სვანეთს) [Salt for Svanetia] (1930) - rating_3_5 - early etnographic film from the director of Cranes are Flying and I Am Cuba!
White Fawn's Devotion: A Play Acted by a Tribe of Red Indians in America (1910) - rating_2_5 - a novelty! Native Americans playing in this film!
Грёзы [Daydreams] (1915) - rating_3_5 - yet another poetic melodrama from Mr. Bauer!
Castello Cavalcanti (2013) - rating_2_5 - a short from Anderson! Nothing special, but the colours are beautiful!
Hotel Chevalier (2007) - rating_3 - everyone's crazy about Portman's ass in this one, while I like the cinematography, colours and laid-backness of this flick
The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (1927) - rating_4_5 - BEST FREAKIN' HITCHCOCK EVER! No, not just silent Hitchcock. Best Hitchcock of them all. No, I'm not crazy. It really is. Whatta freakin' beauty! I needed 25 Hitchcock films to finally get to his masterpiece, but when I did, oh boy! I was fighting with myself. Yes, this is how it's gonna end. No way! Not for the year, not for the country, it's impossible! Suspense above the ceiling, shadows, a very common Hitchcock theme perhaps for the first time in his flick, glorious, heart-breaking story. It almost made me cry! My copy had an IDEAL soundtrack. Wow. Amazing.
Sound Test for Blackmail (1929) - rating_2_5 - okay, it's not even a movie, per se, just a sound test like the title suggests, I've seen it long before, but haven't rated it, then discovered I can rate it on RYM, so why the hell not. It's just Hitchcock being Hitchcock.
Nanook of the North (1922) - rating_3_5 - etnographic staged documentary about Eskimo. Pretty enjoyable, but if you want a real silent masterwork that has to do with man's fight with the snow and cold, watch The Epic of Everest (Mount Everest instead of frozen Canada, but better in my opinion)
Nekromantik 2 (1991) - rating_4 - if you loved the first Nekromantik film and are looking for more, umm, let's say, experience of this kind, look no further! Nekromantik 2 is just as great as the first part! The cinematography is beautiful, the feel-good scenes are beautiful, the humour is beautiful, too (it has way more comedy elements than the first part), the necrophilia scenes are... disgusting, but also beautiful in a way. And the leading lady (she was in the first part, too) is also beautiful. And everything is beautiful about this film, but the greatest thing about it is the ending. The very ending. THE GREATEST "TWIST" (not even sure if it's something to be called twist) EVER!!!
Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS (1975) - rating_3 - more or less recommended by Movie Gal, a really controversial flick (you can't get more controversial than this!). Elsa is a Nazi camp warden that tortures women and spends nights with men. Of course it's torture porn & sexploitation in a freakin' death camp. It wasn't indignant for me, though, for some people it may be. Dang, that American dude had some serious blue balls!
馬路天使 [Street Angel] (1937) - rating_4 - as good as The Goddess! Zhou Xuan is not only the best singer ever, but also a very cute little thing in this film! One scene made me laugh!
Dzieñ ¶wira [Day of the Wacko] (2002) - rating_4 - Polish classic I just watched in its entirety. I've seen a great chunk of it in parts on YT (under titles like funny scene, or funny scenes of Polish cinema compilations etc.) but as I recently realized never from the very beginning to the end in one sitting, so I had to do it. It's a comedy film, but with a social commentary and psychological drama. I didn't laugh and I found it more sad than funny, but whatever. A great film.
Папа, умер Дед Мороз [Daddy, Father Frost Is Dead] (1991) - rating_3 - so that's how necrorealism looks like, very experimental and weird, even for me (!!!)
Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell (1974) - rating_3_5 - I finally watched all Hammer Frankenstein films! The series is AWE-SO-ME!
Herostratus (1967) - 4 whatta debut! Can't believe it's the only film from the director! Levy takes from Godard and later Godard will be taking from Levy! A very modern film for its time. The main protagonist is an ******* and I should hate him and be annoyed as hell, but I wasn't! The basic idea is genius, too. A guy wants to commit suicide and 'sell' it to media. Michael Gothard demolishes his room better than Cage does it in Vampire's Kiss, Helen Mirren is surprisingly hot as a young lady and the movie screams awesome. The scene of hero's joy, when he's screaming and running along the corridor have to be made into a YouTube reaction video!
Fehérlófia [Son of the White Mare] (1981) - rating_4 - *.* Eye-candy! Them visuals, though. The story is nothing great. I mean, it's good, but don't expect some metaphysical stuff like The Tale of Tales. But these visuals. These visuals, dawg. *.*

Hídavatás [Inauguration] (1969) - rating_2_5 - a decent animation short from the director of the film above
Sisyphus (1974) - rating_3_5 - a reinterpretation of the Sisyphus mythos. The ending gave me chills! Incredible!
Tribulation 99: Alien Anomalies Under America (1991) - rating_4 - rampaging gang of psychic vampires made me rewatch the movie with the commentary track on, while the Reptilian CIA agents f**ked my brain beyond repair.
Stagecoach (1939) - rating_4_5 - already wrote about it, one of my favourite westerns now!
Le sang d'un poète [The Blood of a Poet] (1932) - rating_3_5 - a really interesting surrealist offering from Mr. Cocteau!
It Happened One Night (1934) - rating_3 - the first hour is pretty good! I especially liked Mr. Shapeley. Then it gets downhill and I wasn't a fun of what was after. The ending was something I don't really like in cinema, while the very ending a cunning dodge from Hays code. "Jericho walls are melting." Sure. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
白薔薇学園 そして全員犯された [White Rose Campus: Then Everybody Gets Raped] (1982) - rating_3 - when, the title already gives away everything. A lot of nice t's in this film! Nice t*ts (although due to the film's theme it's a little bit hard to enjoy 'em), nice twists (3 of them in this flick! pretty unexpected!) and nice... I lost my train of thought.
Место на земле [A Place on Earth] (2001) - rating_4_5 - what a pity the director only made two films, because both are masterpieces! This one has hipster Jesus and his flock believeing they have to f*ck homeless to make them feel better! They all live in a big commune. Then the Messiah turns out to be a p*ssy! (quite literally!!!) but not a dick (lol don't wanna spoil anything, no, he's not a woman in disguise) and things get complicated. At first the film was repugnant, but then started being beautiful instead! Pretty weird and challenging masterpiece!
Necronomicon - Geträumte Sünden [Succubus] (1968) - rating_4 - the BDSM (?) performance sequence is top notch! The movie is pretty quick and enjoyable, but if you're not a fan of Jesus Franco, chances are you're gonna hate it!
The Color of Love (1994) - rating_3 - PORN + Brakhage! You can't get more avantgarde than this! The director (she's a woman!) takes a vintage porn tape and adds some brakhag-ish effects on it. Not sure if she's making fun of Brakhage's abstractionist films, or worshipping him in this film, but the result is pretty cool if you're into experimental films.
Poem 8 (1932) - rating_3_5 - another experimental flick! This time more in a vain of Maya Deren. Or maybe it isn't. Beautiful to look at, anyway.
Triptih o materiji i smrti [Triptych About Substance and Death] (1960) - rating_3 - can't even remember this one, another experimental short.
Moment (1968) - rating_4 - the most intimate film experience I've ever had! The camera is very close to a face of a girl, who's laying on her bed. She's having a smoke and looking at the camera from time to time (looking deep into her eyes, feeling like she is looking JUST AT YOU is incredible) and then she... starts masturbating... Or peeling onions in a shaky manner. But it looks more like masturbating to me. She no longer looks at the camera (WHATTA PITY COULD'VE BEEN 4.5 STARS) while doing it, but she's enjoying herself (of course the camera is all the time on her face, so you can't see anything, you dirty kid, you!), then she stops and the movie ends. You don't really know what exactly happened. Did she have an orgasm? Did she enjoy it? Did she get a help from the cameraman? Maybe it was the viewer who helped her (you can imagine it if you're kinky!). Who the hell knows, but I know it's a very nice experimental film.
花と蛇 [Flower and Snake] (1974) - rating_4 - top notch pinku about BDSM and taming & training of a woman to make her your sex slave!!! Also bondage. Lots of it. And lots of humour (not funny, but enjoyable and makes the film way more lightweight). At first I couldn't get into the kinky parts (enema-rape on a woman!) but then started enjoying it (the movie, not the kink shown in it! God it sounds terrible!!!). Well, anyway, the movie is not serious, it's more of a comedy. Some scenes are really memorable! "JIMMY! JIMMY, NO!", "I DID IT! I DID IT!!!" (if I was ever to make a mash-up essay film I'd montage it along it White Heat's "Made it, Ma! Top of the world!") or burning fap-tissues as burning his past! Just indredible!
悪徳の栄え [Marquis de Sade's Prosperities of Vice] (1988) - rating_3_5 - I had wrong expectations! I thought it's a pinku film in a vein of the film above, but it's an artsy flick with gorgeous cinematography! A must-see for all de Sade fans!
Vampyros Lesbos [Lesbian Vampires: The Heiress of Dracula] (1971) - rating_3_5 - why the hell didn't I give it four stars? Oh, I know, no strap-on scene. A reason just as inane as the film itself, but oh boy, was it enjoyable! The music is beautiful! Just type ' Vampyros Lesbos OST Sexadelic Dance Party (full album)' in YT search! Whatta glorious music! Then, the ladies. Soledad Miranda is beautiful, but the other lady is also easy on the eyes! Then, Franco's usual mood and cinematography (these colours!). Then, wow, just like at the title! They're not only lesbians! They are VAMPIRE LESBIANS! I had a very strong urge to rewatch it the next day I watched it! Perhaps the film indeed deserves a four star rating!
Countess Dracula (1971) - rating_2_5 - worst Hammer film ever! It doesn't have anything to do with vampires, let alone Dracula! It's about Liz Bathory! A mediocre historical gothic horror fantasy flick at that!
Technology/Transformation: Wonder Woman (1979) - rating_2_5 - After this experimental short ended the only thing I could say was SHAKE THY WONDER MAKER! SHAKE THY WONDER MAKER, BABY!
コネクション [Connection] (1981) - rating_3_5 - Matsumoto is a genius! He makes the most enjoyable structural films ever!
Six Figures Getting Sick (Six Times) (1966) - rating_2 - Lynch being Lynch.
Nelda (1969) - rating_2 - experimental short, I think it's about nothingness, because you can't see sh*t on the screen!
Eugenie (1970) - rating_4 - already wrote about it! Franco you mad genius!
Anatomie de l'enfer [Anatomy of Hell] (2004) - rating_2_5 - Rocco Siffredi (yes, THIS Rocco Siffredi!) proceeds to stick a garden tool into a woman's vagina. I thnk it symbolizes how women are objectified by men and are only thought to be sex machines for them. Hence the use of porn actor as the main male role. LOL! Feminism at its worst/best (hard to tell). Amira Casar is BEAUTIFUL though! The perfect female body for me!!! Here, feminist director, the best thing about your film is THE BODY OF A WOMAN, do you hate me now? Okay, I'm being edgy, the film wasn't THAT bad. It had some nice ideas and I wasn't struggling with it (it's pretty short, maybe that's why), but it was trying to be too controversial for its own good (tampons are delicious, let's drink tampon blood!).
PS: No butthurt here, just kidding a little bit. The film was okay.
Light Is Waiting (2007) - rating_3 - I watch too many experimental films! Watch it! It starts with a part of a sitcom, then gives you epileptic seizure to turn into something I can't find words for.
Journey to the Seventh Planet (1962) - rating_2_5 Lem's Solaris meets The Twilight Zone episode. Atrocious film in all technical aspects, but surprisingly easy to watch (again, pretty short) and moderately entertaining.
Suspense (1913) - rating_3_5 - the first American female director!!! Split screen!!! Lon Chaney run over by a car!!!!!
The Cat Piano (2009) - rating_3_5 - poetic narration by Nick Cave! The art style is nice, too!
Fantômas (1913) - rating_4 - inferior to Les Vampires, but only a little bit! Genius Feuillade series (not TV series, though, CINEMA SERIES!!!), Juve and Fandor are the good guys, but one is sure it's the villain, the Fantomas, that is the main protagonist! SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER He never gets caught!!! Take this, happy-end films! END OF SPOILER
The New York Hat (1912) - rating_3 - Decent Griffith! Mary Pickford is suspected for giving her precious little body away to a priest (!!!) for a beautiful hat he bought her!
The Land Beyond the Sunset (1912) - rating_3_5 - Touching! A poor boy from slums leaves them for the first time in his life to discover the beauty of the world! The ambiguous poetic ending is incredible!
L' agonie de Byzance [The Agony of Byzance] (1913) - rating_3_5 - Feuillade makes a battle flick! Byzantium's coat of arms looks like the head of PEDOBEAR!
Absurd Encounter With Fear (1967) - rating_1_5 - Lynch being Lynch. And also being pretty silly!
おもひでぽろぽろ [Only Yesterday] (1991) - rating_3_5 - not as good as The Grave of Fireflies, but still a good film! The ending is cliche and lame but I had a hard time not to cry! I eventually managed not to (just like with Grave of Fireflies), but it wasn't easy!
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) - rating_4 - Best Capra just after It's a Wonderful Life. Stewart is a genius! Pretty childish protagonist as well as the movie's message (well, the message is not childish, but it's utopian, the ending was imposed by Hays code, normally he could've never won). Still, freakin' amazing.
The Phantom of the Opera (1925) - rating_3_5 - I expected a masterpiece and got only a good flick! Chaney is good! Some scenes, like the showing of his face are amazing! Not enough focus on Phantom's personality! He was too evil, the viewer couldn't feel pity with him!
Le salaire de la peur [The Wages of Fear] (1953) - rating_4_5 - one of the best thrillers ever made! Clouzout was a master! The rock blowing scene has more tension than all Hitchcock films collected! Okay, I'm being unnecessarily controversial here, but damn it was the scariest scene in a film ever, I had tears in my eyes fearing for these four men! And then five minutes later, you know what happens! Holy molly! It just happens! And then this and that! A masterpiece!

Wow, you can see how I get more and more excited during the movie describing.

See, I don't get why everyone is acting like it's too raunchy, and that the original wasn't. Have you seen the original lately? There's jokes about drugs, racism, animal deaths, incest, child molestation, dead old ladies...the list goes on. It was hardly a classy, or family oriented, film. The new film actually does carry on the dark, edgy humor of the original quite well. People tend to crap on it because it is based off a classic comedy, but if given a chance, it has a ton of laughs. :D

I watch the original first Vacation almost once a week. I own the blu-ray. As for the jokes done in 1983 compared to the 2015 sequel, they both have tones of dark humor. But in the 80s it was done better and with subtle tones. Even though you can tell they were there. And done classy. Nowadays the kind of humor is just flat out in your face and mostly executed the same way, in almost every 'so called' comedy like this out there. And 99.9 % done unnecessarily.

But as I stated before, I will view this when I get the chance some day. Maybe a few scenes are actually worth laughing along with, instead of just laughing at the movie for just being made.

Belle de Jour

Well this is one of the strangest films I've ever watched. I'm not quite sure what to make of it. It was more than just weird for the sake of weird, but I'm not sure what it was, exactly. A young woman who has (or so the flashbacks imply) been abused as a child, and now fears intimacy with her husband, decides to work in a brothel in the afternoons. But is it a dream or a fantasy and if so, which parts? It seems obvious, or at least easier, at first to assume that this is a fantasy. Perhaps it is more palatable to imagine this as her fantasy, if it is 'real', it is the fantasy of the (male) writer or director which is decidedly less comfortable (but then again, the idea that women fantasise about being dominated and working in a brothel is even more of a male fantasy, surely?). But by the end, when her young gangster lover comes to her home, the film almost takes on the aspect of a thriller, and it's decidedly less entertaining if it's not all real, and the 'happy ending' seems so forced. Or is that ending her last/newest fantasy? So it's just as much about what we want to be real as it is about what is real for the characters. After all, none of the characters are really real people, and all film is just a fantasy, isn't it? Another strange thing is the sex - there's very little actual sex shown, it's all in the suggestion. Is this more erotic or powerful (like the sex version of not showing the monster in horror movies), or is it just a tease? If it really is all in Severine's head, then does the limit of her imagination stop before the actual act, and that's why we get suggestions of kinky things that are never really explained or shown?

It's certainly a thought-provoking film that raises a lot of questions. I liked the look of it, very cool to look at. But there are some troubling aspects, so I wouldn't exactly say that I liked it.

Pixels
Disappointingly bad movie.

The CGI is kind of cool, but the performances are flat, the comedic timing is off, and Sandler just doesn't seem to be making an effort at all(although this may just be his style). In fact, I'm sure that part of the dialogue was either a first-take or else ad lib. How do you get Sean Bean, Adam Sandler, and a few other well-known actors to participate in something so lazy? They could have used a studio audience or a laugh track.

I think I know where this movie came from. Someone decided to market a nostalgia film (1980s arcade games) to fathers who have boys aged 12-14. The humor is not sophisticated enough for a normally developed adult intellect, but it also is not appropriate for small children with all the adult themes. It doesn't work. I felt icky watching it.

Can't remember much about this one. Wouldn't bother with it even if you were a fan of the Despicable Me movies.

Theres a lot of cool set pieces (the best one taking place during an opera), but all the good stuff happens in the first half. The second half you're just left with some uninteresting story you don't really care about.

Enemy

http://www.thelondontree.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/0.png

Director Denis Villeneuve's other movie from 2013 Prisoners was a pretty entertaining flick. Enemy, which also stars Jake Gyllenhaal, is not. This is a bad, bad movie with zero entertainment value. Gyllenhaal plays an expressionless man who has no business being in a movie. Then he discovers another man who is exactly the same guy as him, except even more boring. The film often hints that both men are actually the same person and sprinkles in a few weird scenes with spiders, in a desperate attempt to make the movie interesting.

It doesn't work at all.

The Tragedy of Man

Vale Abraão [Abraham's Valley] (1993) - rating_4 - my first Oliveira film! Lasting for more than 3 hours the movie is very complicated both visually and lyrically, even though it may not be that apparent at the beginning. Oliveira's style is very distinctive and in this film he mixes beautiful visual language of symbols with rich poetic narration creating a movie one of its kind. Perhaps this is a great masterpiece, but I don't know this yet? Also a little girl putting her finger inside a rose and rubbing it, is the best sexual metaphor I've ever seen!
Terrore nello spazio [Planet of the Vampires] (1965) - rating_3 - a decent Bava sci-fi flick with a little conspiration theory you can deduce from film's ending. I prefer his horror films, but this one was fairly entertaining, too.
Espelho mágico [Magic Mirror] (2005) - rating_4 - my second Oliveira and despite its shorter running time, just as good as the last one, or maybe even better. It's just so interesting and thought-provoking! The ideas in this one are just overlapping, but they all sound very clearly! The movie's very powerful and I already loved it when the intro started and Danse Macabre started playing!
Az ember tragédiája [The Tragedy of Man] (2011) - rating_4_5 - from the director of Feherlofia comes a monumental masterpiece of animation he had been making for 23 years! I don't even know what to compare it with, but perhaps 2001: A Space Odyssey is a good example. It tells the history of mankind from the very beginning to the future and beyond! It is the Satan that takes Adam into a trip through time! The animation style changes accordingly to the times we're currently at. Abundant narration and tons of symbols and visual marvels make this one quite a challenge for anyone who feels like beholding such piece of art.
まごころ [Sincerity] (1939) - rating_3_5 - Mikio Naruse Chronologically - continued - the story is, as always, simple, but heartfelt.
Gone With the Wind (1939) - rating_3_5 - one of the biggest classics I haven't yet seen I have just seen. Is it even grammatically correct? Either way, it's good. Much better than I expected it to be from the first part of the film that felt like a lame Technicolor musical without singing, but with terrible soppiness and Vivien was a little brat as well. Well, she was for the whole film, but that's her character, isn't it? Cinematography is good and at times great. Especially memorable are the sunset shots, the fire and the station scene. But my favourite scene was the one right before the Intermission, during which Vivian says that she will do anything just to survive and live proudly for the rest of her life. This actually was the only part of the film that felt ultimately genuine in my opinion. The rest was a little bit artificial, if you know what I mean. Also, the legendary quote from the end was fun to hear for the first time (never heard it before, because I wanted to have the pleasure of hearing it for the first time when I have the whole movie behind me already. It was so amusing to imagine a contemporary remake and critics complaining everything today is vulgar, hence Gable's character (that is, whoever would play him in the remake, maybe Nicholas Cage? XDD) saying: "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a f*ck". Lol. The ending was a surprise, too. All in all, a good movie. Maybe even a very good one, if you're into this kind of flicks. Not a masterwork, though.
Scarface (1932) - rating_4 - BRUTAL! Better than De Palma's version! Also the whole sister thing at the end moved me more than the remake did! I guess the Hays code still wasn't in full power by the time, because the movie has a lot of murders, mob killing each other, riding the cars and shooting Tommy guns! This one's plot is similar to the remake, even though De Palma made so many changes. Boris Karloff plays bowling, too! Lol.
Dracula A.D. 1972 (1972) - rating_3_5 - Hammer Dracula - continued! This one has Dracula in the 70's, which entails him sucking the blood of damn HIPPIES. The hippies were very annoying, but the ending fight was cool. Also, the Lee & Cushing duo is always a good recommendation to watch any film.

I've seen 4 Hawks Daniel, here's my ratings:

Bringing Up Baby 3.5+
Red River 3.5

Monkey Business 3

He is certainly a director on my radar. I may have rated Red River a bit too low, I really liked it, but we will see what a REWATCH dos down the road.

Oh yes, I remember you talking about Bringing Up Baby before. But yeah I like Red River too but it isn't one of my favourite Hawks' films, excellent direction and performances, but I was a little unsure about the ending which I found weak.

But yeah, I think generally you'd enjoy most of his works, I don't see why you'd particularly dislike any of them :)

I really can't a credit many of my issues with it to Polanski's work. The film is technically superb. The production design was amazing, the makeup was strong especially for the witches. Shakespeare's works have never done it for me on screen though, despite the fact that they're made to be performed. To be fair on paper the only one that I really like was Hamlet. I don't dislike the film- except the acting which was sub par overall- I just didn't care about anything outside of its technical aspects.

Agreed.

Mainly boring and predictable for me. An "average" animation at best, the design didn't interest me and the attempt at a cross American-Japan and gaming humour mainly fell flet in my eyes. You can give it an extra popcorn if your generous and don't mind an easy watch, but I feel like I need to balance out my ratings and this just wasn't an interesting film for me.

Haven't seen this one yet, but naturally I'm very interested. Any reason why it's only three stars?

I've put it as 3.5 now, but it's somwhere between a 6.5-7 on a more detailed scale. I'm trying not to do plusses or minus, so some of my ratings are a little indecisive.

There's a half hour silent heist scene that the film's known for, and that is excellent. If all the film was up to that quality I would give it at least four popcorns, unfortunately after that I found the plot to be weak as everything falls apart. Maybe if I cared more for the characters it could have been more effective, I think Bob Le Flambeur handled it's characters better and was more coherent all round. It's shot well, and has some great moments, but it just wasn't a favourite. I'm not sure how it's rated lower than Le Cercle Rouge on IMDb, Mubi etc. either, I felt the storytelling was better in that too, plus it has the heist scene to match.

Well, I watched it after the list deadline, unfortunately. But I loved it. I love Godard so it's no surprise, but I found myself laughing at quite a lot of it. I really enjoyed the dark humour, the playfullness of it all (as it is with a lot of Godard films, but here the content really matches up to the way its edited too), it felt like Godard had a lot of fun making the film.

Agreed, the more and more new films Godard made he would deconstruct any possible unnecessary frolics as much as possible, and by the time he got around to Weekend he arrived at pure dark comedy fun, which ended oh giving birth to an ultimate masterpiece. The film start to finish is endless absurdity, but is surprisingly organized inside Godard's rule of thumb. Glad you enjoyed it. :)

Jurassic World (Colin Trevorrow, 2015) rating_1

Not much to say, just a terrible film. Really was painful to watch.

El Dorado (Howard Hawks, 1966) rating_4

Really enjoyable film and fun to watch. Great humor throughout, nothing really to complain about. Doesn't get any higher than 4* because it's basically the same as Rio Bravo but shorter, and for me Rio Bravo is better.

Lost Highway (David Lynch, 1997) rating_4_5

Strange, dark and brilliant. I'm a big fan of David Lynch and consider this to be one of his best films. Bought it on Blue Ray recently to watch it again and it just gets better.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (Sergio Leone, 1966) rating_5

A masterpiece. This was one of the first great films I watched when I was just getting into films and I also bought this on Blu Ray recently for another watch. It was even better this time because I bought surround sound speakers and a load of films.;) This film on Blu Ray with those speakers really is amazing. I only put it on to try out the speakers and ended up watching the whole film. Brilliant.

Citizen Kane (Orson Welles, 1941) rating_5

Another great film film, great performances from everyone, perfectly made, can't get over how good it is.

Rififi (Jules Dassin, 1955) rating_3

A generous rating from me, apart from a brilliant heist scene I thought it was a poor film. No stand out performances, an extremely simple story. Stupid things happen just to make shortcuts and make the story even easier. The fact I didn't feel anything for the character at all by the end of the film tells me all I need to know about how much I enjoyed it, also the fact that I was so glad when it ended tells me enough.. The film really didn't interest me in anyway from start to finish, but yeah the heist scene was great. It annoys me because the film clearly had so much potential but all in all it turn out pretty poor, found it quite dull if I'm honest.

Dressed to Kill (Brian De Palma, 1980) rating_3_5

A good film, I enjoyed the suspense throughout and think the film was well made. A nice few twists as well. The film was what I expected it to be and it's the type of film I like. Can't bump it up to 4* because I don't feel it's quite worth of that, but it certainly deserves more than 3* in my eyes.

The Sons of Katie Elder (Henry Hathaway, 1965) rating_3_5

Well made film, enjoyable performance from Dean Martin as always and the usual very good performance from John Wayne. All in all just a good solid film.

Foxy Brown (Jack Hill, 1974) rating_2_5

It is what it is, enjoyable I guess yeah but nothing I'd really watch again. I can see why people would like it and it's not to bad but just not really for me. Still a decent rating though because it wasn't a bad experience watching it and I didn't really dislike it, just wouldn't say it's that good.

Vertigo (Alfred Hitchcock, 1958) rating_5

Possibly my favourite film of all time, watched it a while ago and recently gave it a rewatch and remembered how brilliant it is, it's perfection.

Singin' in the Rain (Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen, 1952) 5.0

Great film, really fun, loved the story and loved the comedy. Haven't watched many musicals but my brother convinced me to watch this one. It really surprised me how funny and clever it was, Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor are brilliant and I loved their chemistry. A truly great film.

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (David Lynch, 1992) rating_5

Twin Peaks is my favourite TV series and I love all of David Lynch's films so it's no surprise I love this one. The film was exactly what I wanted it to be, a perfect prequel to a perfect series.

In a Lonely Place (Nicholas Ray, 1950) rating_4

Great performances from Humphrey Bogart and Gloria Grahame. Loved the style of this film. A great Noir.

Rebecca (Alfred Hitchcock, 1940) rating_2_5

Not for me. Didn't seem at all like Hitchcock, it was dull, boring and so much longer than it needed to be. Good performances by Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine but nothing too memorable. Just a typical Oscar film, I was left really disappointed.

Some thoughts on these two, Daniel. :)

Foxy Brown - Enjoyable film, three stars means good. It was my first venture into the exploitation or more specifically the blaxploitation genre, so I had certain expectations at what I was going to get, and I got pretty much that. There were a few really fun moments that I enjoyed, but I didn't love the whole thing in the way that I'd want to watch it over and over again.

Dressed to Kill - Very good, although not great, like on the level of Blow Out for me. The Hitchcock influences were cool but also meant that a lot of it was predicable, but certain scenes still managed to be suspenseful and interesting. I liked the style of the direction and really enjoyed Nancy Allen (who I know sometimes gets criticised for her acting) too. I liked how there were some moments of comedy to balance out the tension too, maybe I wish it had some of its own story/depth past its stylistic influences. I've got Body Double recorded that I'm looking forward to as well.

Thanks, Daniel. If you get the chance, see Coffy. You'll probably like Body Double but I think it's pretty poor and that's being kind.

No I haven't unfortunately. Only seen one Antonioni film and that's L'Avventura which I love.

Firstly the spoiler-free review:
A standard thriller; Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) is married to beautiful Amy (Rosamund Pike), who disappears one day. The media hound him accusing him of murder- but did he do it? This is a very slow-paced film; David Fincher was clearly relying on the hype of the twist because had people not watched the film knowing there was a twist, they would have left after the first thirty minutes. The pace quickens slightly after the twist but it is overlong and overhyped. Rosamund Pike's performance is good but not Oscar-winning and Ben Affleck is so irritating in the film that you want something bad to happen to him.

The rest of the review has spoilers:

I was disappointed by the twist; I was expecting something cleverer. I suppose you could argue that the audience's dislike of Affleck's character means that we ignore the obvious signs that she was faking it (the blood, the supposedly abusive exes) but he's so insidious that I could never feel pity for him. The characterisation of Amy was insultingly mispgynistic (the novelist/screenwriter being female is not a cop out); it plays to the bunny boiler stereotype of pretty women being manipulative and out to destroy men and once they reach true heights of lunacy, we are meant to forgive the man's behaviour. Once the twist is revealed, Nick is no longer morally ambiguous- the film shows him as the good guy (albeit a flawed one) whereas she is a total psychopath. This kind of film belongs in the nineties; the dynamic of douchy guy/psychopathic wife/lover is played out.

The theme of how the media twists everything and hounds him might be interesting to some people but seeing that you can glean that from reading any newspaper or watching any news programme, do we really need a film about it?

I'm not only addicted to movies, but also to posting in this thread! HELP!

I could look at this GIF forever!
浮草 [Floating Weeds] (1959) - rating_4_5 - One of my favourite Ozu films! I only gave 4.5 to this and Tokyo Twilight, which gives me some serious pangs of consciencefor giving all these Setsuko Hara flicks 'only' 4 stars. Sometimes I think I'm slowly becoming one with cinema and the ultimate ending will be rating everything 4.5, then rewatching Werckmeister Harmonies, which is of course my only 5 and then dying happily. More on a serious note, this one is slightly different from other color Ozu films. Or at least it felt different for me. Of course, it doesn't mean this time the most Japanese of Japanese directors made an action flick that would embarass Michael Bay. To the point... Chishû Ryû only appears for a minute, but the second he appeared I was screaming badass to the screen (also happened to me while watching the original Django and Lady Snowblood). I don't know why I did this. He was just sitting, smiling and having a nice chit-chat with some other guys. It's just that his face always brings happiness to my soul. Next, we also have a delightfully beautiful Japanese lady here. There are kissing scenes (!), a nice plot with usual for Ozu style of developing the story. There's a lot of swear-words in this one, too! The Master in this film goes around calling women sluts and even slaps & tugs them! The colors are beautiful. Beyond words amazing.
Opening Night (1977) - rating_4 (Gena Rowlands once again proves she is one of the best actresses ever! The story is pretty interesting and the character development just as the story develops was done with a great intuition. The theatrical scenes were amazing, too. The final performance, with Rowlands in a certain state was beyond amazing, not to mention an improvised (?) last act, in which she and her husband (both in real life and in the play) do some weird stuff like athlete's trick and what not. I'm watching Love Streams next!)

Eva Mendes likes to play with blood and guts!
Lost River (2014) - rating_4 (Haters gonna hate! For me Gosling's debut is an amazing film! The only thing I can accuse the movie of is lack of originality and Gosling of lack of his own author style, but since it's his first film, it's not a big flaw for me. In this Lynchian&Refnian reverie nightmarish style over substance tour-de-force (I was trying to be a pretentious reviewer here, let me know if I succeeded) Gosling shows he's a very promising filmmaker! The cinematography, music and mood create an atmosphere very similar to that in Only God Forgives . There's a scene with Christina Hendricks (dem redheads, tho) trapped in a plastic fetish-shell! Then a man appears and what does he do? HE STARTS DANCING TO AWESOME MUSIC AND HE DANCES LIKE A JUNKIE GAY ON STEROIDS! Gotta love this sh*t. PS: Barbara Steele is in this one!)
Nostos: Il ritorno [Nostos: The Return] (1989) - rating_3_5 (Okay, so this is a contemplation film just like every Piavoli flick. He's made better ones, but this offbeat interpretation of Odysseus mythos is very interesting and the mythical mood was enough for me to stick to the screen.)

[I]The over-expressiveness of Dodes'ka-den certainly has its reason.
色即是空 [Everything Visible Is Empty] (1975) - rating_2_5 (Matsumoto's experimental short! Epileptic seizure in 3... 2... 1...)
Aranymadár [Golden Bird] (1987) - rating_3_5 (A break from the eye-killers of Matsumoto! A Hungarian fairy tale! The animation style is simple, but pretty nice, while the narration is really beautiful.)
http://i.imgur.com/HE77fia.gif
It's so disturbing when he smiles like this and then in a second changes his face expression into poker face!
アートマン [Atman] (1975) - rating_3_5 (Matsumoto's experimental short! It's interesting how at the beginning the epileptic blinking screen is almost impossible to bear, but by the end you're used to it and kinda get into this stuff. It's hypnotizing!)
どですかでん [Dodes'ka-den] (1970) - rating_3_5 (I expected a heart-crushing experience of Red Beard proportions, but it never happened! It's a good flick, nevertheless. First Kurosawa in colour and it uses it quite effectively. It has a bunch of memorable characters, like the mime train-lover, the poor father and a son living in a wrecked car, or an old man kind to thieves. It's pretty cool, but I guess my expectations were too high!)

Labyrinth of Dreams. Human body or a bunch of rags? This moment is not only tense, but also inexplicably mysterious!
Bronson (2008) - rating_3_5 (Not quite as atmospheric as Only God Forgives, or Drive, but still a pretty good flick with a phenomenal Tom Hardy's show-off!)
ユメノ銀河 [Labyrinth of Dreams] (1997) - rating_3_5 (Not even close to the awesomeness The August in the Water is, but the constant subtle feeling of dark mystery is enough to sit through it and enjoy every second! No other director can make simple scenes feel so alien, mythical, uneasy and mysterious!)

Bachus/Caravaggio.
Novecento [1900] (1976) - rating_4_5 (A five-hours-long epic from Bertolucci! Starring among others De Niro, Depardieu, Lancaster and Sutherland in his evilest role! The cinematography is glorious and one can clearly see this film was one of the main inspirations for Angelopoulos! The music composed by Morricone is pretty good, too and plays well with the images. The acting is really nice. The second part of the film felt much better than the first part I didn't like that much at first, but as a whole it was amazing (I had this with Once Upon a Time in America, too). Guess I don't like to look at young boys playing with their penises. The scene with Depardieu and De Niro getting a double handjob from a epileptic woman was, on the other hand, alright, since they weren't children already. LOL at the woman commenting on Depardieu's small winnie. LOL at both of them being flaccid. I wonder if it was because if they were hard the censorship wouldn't let the movie be released. Yeah, the second part expands the character of Sutherland, who plays an evil Fascist doing some terrible things and still being Sutherland (that face, tho) as well as expands the Communism vs. Fascism themes. Obviously, Bertolucci is biased and champions Communism a little too much, but it didn't bother me that much. I like the idea of the friendship between De Niro and Depardieu and how they helped each other as far as they could. Sutherland was dealt with brutally, too and the pseudo-trial at the end was powerful! The ending on the railtrack was unexpected! It's a four star film, but I'm giving an additional half a star for Sutherland! WHY DON'T YOU KNOCK IT OFF WITH THEM NEGATIVE WAVES, ATTILA!?)
Caravaggio (1986) - rating_4_5 (A true work of art to behold! Living pictures, stagnant frames! It's so artsy, even the most hardcore cinephiles may be perplexed by the film (and gay scenes). The idea of incorporating modern items into the picture was good, too. Of course, it's not like Titus Andronikus, in which Romans drive cars and listen to jazz, but the use of calculator, or typewriter in XV / XVII century is enough. Jarman manages to cover Caravaggio's works and make them look beautiful on celluloid! Also, Jarman somehow managed to make Tilda Swinton look beautiful!)
