The Ascent (Larisa Shepitko, 1977) 3

During WWII, two Soviet partisans (Boris Plotnikov and Vladimir Gostyukhin) leave their party to search for food, but they’re eventually captured by the Germans.
Have you seen Wings, also directed by Larisa Sheptiko?
http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2008/08/19/arts/19dvd600.jpg
Yes, but I need to see it again.
Wings (Larisa Shepitko, 1966) 2.5
Soviet director Shepitko's debut film tells the story of school headmistress Nadezhda (Maya Bulgakova) who feels lonely and underappreciated in her current state in life, especially since during WWII, she had an exciting time as a jet pilot heroine and had a steamy affair with another pilot who died during an aerial dogfight. She has a male friend who projects very little heat and a daughter who married an older man but never even told her about it at the time. What joy she seems to have is connected to her memories of WW II. For the most part, this is a very quiet, occasionally-poetic drama. The opening scene does get your attention as it begins inside a building but focuses on a particularly busy outside street. Then you hear loud footsteps and a man almost seems to come through the window from the outdoors (although he actually just came from a side indoor hallway). This turns out to be the tailor who's going to make Nadezhda's very boring new professional suit. Much of the film seems to go by slowly, but it does have some rich details along the way and an almost transcendent conclusion at an airfield where the visuals and music reach an emotional crescendo.

I've seen Wings, too. 3.5
The ending is amazing.
For some reason I thought you already posted a review of The Guest in your thread, but there doesn't appear to be one. Any idea what I'm thinking of? :p
And I also thought The Drop was decent.
Eh...not really. Do you know if it's a film of the same style you're thinking of or whether it's just a similar title?
And yeah The Drop was a solid flick. It's one of those films where I can't really pick out too many things that were wrong with it but I just didn't take to it as much I feel I should. Surprisingly I was more taken with Locke. As a film it may be tough to get too excited about it or to fall too much in love with it, but it does happen to feature an extraordinary performance from Tom Hardy. If the film is a rating_3 then his performance may well be a full blown rating_5. He should certainly have been in the running for a Best Actor Oscar.
Blue Ruin I was really looking forward to but just couldn't really get into it. Will try it again one day in case I just wasn't in the right mood for it. Until the film came out I had no idea who Mr Peabody and Sherman were but the film was a whole lot of fun; witty, creative, colourful and willfully silly when it wanted to be. WolfCop was pretty cheap, really stupid and kind of *****. But then that was the point of it and there was some fun stuff there. At one point the film takes a break for the character to pimp his ride and create a Wolf mobile like it's a 1980s TV show. It's that kind of film.
Safety Not Guaranteed was a small, quirky film that took a while to grab me but really won me over. And I sort of fell in love with Aubrey Plaza in it. The Guest was good trashy fun and felt like a real 80s throwback. And K-Pax is an old favourite I've always really liked/loved.

Mad Max: Fury Road - There are no words. Well, almost no words. "Insane" is a word. "Bat crap crazy" also works. but the best one is "Incredible." This fourth film in the Mad Max saga is incredible. Tom Hardy makes a great Max, Charlize Theron is awesome as female road warrior Furiosa, and the stunts are terrifying. This is worth seeing at the cinema. 5

Predictability kept this from being super entertaining, as well as the fact that it's a dramatized version of allegedly real events. Restrepo is a better window into the horrors of the current conflict overseas, with the documentary style peeling back the layer of gloss that is present in films like American Sniper. American Sniper is well-made, directed with a sure hand, but I just didn't find it all that interesting.

The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! - Leslie Nielsen was kind of a comedy genius in his day. He delivered every line with a monotone seriousness, and his characters, no matter how inept, didn't see themselves as inherently funny. His performance lent a totally unearned dignity to bumbling police Lt. Frank Drebin, and that just made him that much funnier. This first film in the series was also the best. The jokes fly fast and furious, and there's never a dull moment. Plus watching famous murderer OJ Simpson getting beaten and pummeled throughout is just a joy. A modern comedy classic. 4

I watched this with my girlfriend before we saw the new one, she still likes this one more. Max is a much less typical anti-hero in this one for sure. He's only looking out for himself through the whole thing, none of this redemption nonsense. It gets pretty goofy at times, but the end chase scene is brilliant.

I'm beginning to notice a depressing pattern in these little horror films. The premise will be intriguing, the set-up will be great and then once we hit the midpoint -- forget about it. Much like Starry Eyes, I was very excited for this one during it's fantastic first half hour. So much for that. Goes downhill fast.
FINAL VERDICT: What is going on? Why is this happening? Okay, what are they doing now? What time is it? How much of this is left?

Hot Tub Time Machine 2 - The original was a surprisingly great film, this one, not even close. This one finds three out of our four heroes from the first one (minus John Cusack, who clearly was too smart to appear in this disaster) going into the future to solve Lou's attempted murder...yeah, it's stupid, and instead of the crude yet clever nostalgia of the original, we get treated to too many gay jokes to count and just awful mean spiritedness. In the end, I just didn't care. This film, even more than The Hangover 2 and 3, proves why "high concept" comedies do not NEED sequels. 0

West Side Story (Jerome Robbins & Robert Wise, 1961) 3
Starts of well and has a lot of positives, the cinematography and colours are great, and so are some of the songs and dance scenes. Overall I was never enthralled by the film like I am some other musicals and didn't really find the story all that charming like some of my favourites, but I can see why some people think this is great.
Cape Fear (Martin Scorsese, 1991) 2
Watched bits and bobs off this about a month back and didn't like it, watched it again the other day and it pretty much confirmed my feelings. I think Scorsese is a great director but I really think this is a bad film. I'm a fan of the original, but this comes across to me as far too over indulgent and unnecessarily violent. The idea of having De Niro play the Robert Mitchum character seems like a good one, but doesn't turn out as such. I far prefer the acting and atmosphere of the original which was more subtle but more effective. And what's with almost every shot zooming in to the character's faces? The ending is full of violent scenes and most of them come across as silly to me, I remember the egg scene in the original which I thought was really creepy and dark.
The Great Escape (John Sturges, 1963) 3.5
I don't know how I've never watched this before as the majority of the British population probably have, I finally got round to it the other day as I noticed it was on TV. Very good film, it has some pacing issues and other flaws, but overall its enjoyable and well made. Great to see so many great actors in it, Steve McQueen and James Garner are particularly likeable.

I really liked Scorsese's Cape Fear personally. It's a great and very well made bit of creepy psychological terror and man, is it intense!

I haven't seen the original with Mitchum and Peck yet, though, so I can't compare it to that film. It's not one of my favorite Scorsese films (not in the least bit), but I would definitely give it a much higher rating than you do, Daniel. ;)

Some parts of it were good, and I liked the idea behind them, and the motivations of the characters seemed more fleshed out. But the final act drived me crazy, almost every shot was a zoom in to an actors face, there was so much blood and violence and over the top moments, the original didn't have any of this really but I found Mitchum to be more terrifying than De Niro. And then turning Cady in to some kind of super human being.

I can see your point about the blood and violence, although it didn't bother me personally in that kind of movie, but could you give me an example of a moment where the zoom ins are overdone? I know there are a few at (in my opinion) appropriate moments, but I'm rewatching some of the scenes and I can't seem to find a moment where it's "zoom in-overload".
And yeah, he is some kind of a super human being near the end, but I think that was mainly in service of the thrills, so again it didn't bother me that much.
I can see how your appreciation for the original film might diminish this remake, though. I'm just trying to judge the film on its own here. ;)
P.S.: Which Scorsese films do you still have to see before you've finished his filmography?

Now I have to know what films you rate lower than 1.5.
Within the last month I gave a documentary about the "true stories" behind various urban legends a lower rating. Off the top of my head Runaway Bride might be worse. I don't remember what my rating for Jack Frost* (Chillin' and Killin') was but it should be lower than Superbabies. For classics I think The Birth of a Nation is really terrible, but since I haven't seen it in over 15 years I can't swear to a lower rating. Just to spread the hate around a little more Kyodai Makes the Big Time is an obscure Dutch art film that I hope never to see again.
*I just checked. It's a 0.5
Oh yeah, and I agree with hk on The Aviator. Might be my favorite by Scorsese.

Taken, Taken 2 - Liam Neeson goes on an international murder spree after his daughter is taken in Paris by Albanian thugs to sell into sex slavery. In the sequel, the family of the thugs from the first one take his wife in Istanbul. Loved the first one, the second is ridiculous but still enjoyable. Both films are similar to the Charles Bronson starring exploitation film Death Wish, only without the racism and pro fascist leanings.

Easily in my top 5 of the best thriller of the decade, it's a silent and slow movie but it's effective as hell and you're immediately captivate by it since the beginning. the .gif he posted for Jupiter Ascending is from the best scene in the movie.
When it started, I liked the fast-paced silliness of Jupiter Ascending, and what appeared to be homages to Back to the Future II, Superman, Signs, Cleopatra, Dune, etc. But Eddie Redmayne's vocal performance is atrocious, Tatum Channing's makeup is ludicrous, Douglas Booth is just one-dimensionally-drab and Mila Kunis appears to be playing her "owner of Earth" character as a sort of cheerleader version of Princess Leia. Maybe I took those choices too seriously, but it took away the fun for me for about half the movie, although there's a lighter conclusion.
I can see myself actually raising my Kingsman rating in the future. :)

He has no problems with tone when he can commit to one or the other. It's hard to appreciate the skill involved in an action sequence when the in-story implications actually make it too disturbing to sincerely enjoy - like I'm supposed to watch an ultra-violent massacre set to the tune of Lynyrd fricking Skynyrd and then feel bad about it because the heroic perpetrator was only doing it because he was brainwashed. How do you enjoy something like that?
That's the territory Vaughn has staked out. His movies seem consistent in what he's trying to do and enjoyable to me. You can go to the "Art & Politics" thread and talk about how his (and others') lack of a consistent tone don't work for you and why. That would be a good place to express it and other appropriate matters.

Screw everything you know. Screw everything I know. This masterpiece has come from the depths of production hell to buff your soul back to its original, pure, innocent state before the onslaught of bad movies and life's all too often woes turned it as black as the night sky. For two hours, rejoice in the true wonder, the new planet Earth classic that is this film.
FINAL VERDICT: The best movie I've ever seen in the theater. A true ride from start to finish and an exercise in clean cut, original story telling.
Inglourious Basterds (2009)

I have seen this movie countless times now and I can't find a single thing to complain about. While films like Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction and Django Unchained could all be considered QT's best, I find Inglourious Basterds to be the madman's true masterwork. Razor sharp writing, scenes dripping with conflict and tension until exploding in a gratuitous, coagulated mess and an ending so satisfying I broke up with my girl.
FINAL VERDICT: Powerhouse in all things filmmaking.
Young Adult (2011)

This movie gets a bad rap. Anything with Diablo Cody's name attached to it is probably going to get some unwarranted hate thrown at it whether it's worthy or not but with this one, it's a bit annoying. Didn't like Juno. Thought Jennifer's Body was awful. But, I remember reading the script for this all the way through in one sitting which is a rarity to say the least and after seeing the movie, I consider this one to have been unfortunately overlooked.
FINAL VERDICT: A tight, centralized story that manages to find a way to be entertaining even if not endearing in any way. That's a compliment. Charlize Theron in one of her most underrated performances.
Mad Max: Fury Road..... The best movie I've ever seen in the theater.

The Cormorant rating_3
http://i.ytimg.com/vi/oCkZQywU4uI/hqdefault.jpg
This made-for-TV movie is just so bizarre I had to review it.
It's a mix of Gremlins, The Raven and Moby Dick. A young writer (Ralph Fiennes) and his wife (Helen Scheslinger) are left a beautiful house in remote Wales by the writer's eccentric uncle. He has also left them a creepy bird (the cormorant). The couple feel unable to cope with the bird as they have a young child- however the uncle has left them the house only on the condition that they look after his bird.
The bird is a menacing Rasputin who the couple seem unable to get rid of. However after reading about cormorants that are kept on leads as pets, the writer becomes obsessed with the bird, in an almost romantic way as he neglects his wife and endangers his child in his refusal to let the bird go- a bird that may well be cursed.
There's an interesting twist in the implication that the bird was the uncle's familiar (an animal assisting the uncle in his dark magic). This bird actually has some character and is genuinely quite spooky. In one of his earliest roles, Fiennes is very good- darkly comic, disturbed, adorable. Ironically later roles have not given him the opportunity to play that many different sides. And on a more shallow note, he looks pretty gorgeous here.
The film is a little dated and will probably only appeal to a niche amount of people but if you're a fan of classic ghost stories, the eerie atmosphere of The Cormorant may well appeal.

Same, I was also interested by the comment. There's loads of films that look good on the big screen so it's quite exceptional to pick one.
Maybe I should explain. I'm in my early 20's and didn't have the luxury of seeing most classics in the theater. I also live in a horrible neighborhood, far from any independent theater they may be screening things like Blade Runner or Jaws and so forth. I'd say 95% of the movies I've seen, I've watched at home.

You're right, I did misinterpret the intent to a degree - it helps to clarify in case someone might read it the wrong way. Anyway, I'd say Jaws would be me definite answer simply because it's the highest film on my Top 10 that I've managed to see in a theatrical context (twice, no less), but yeah, I have a lot of opportunities for seeing good films in theatres.

I'd give this the same. Saw it in the cinema with my mates who are much bigger fans of Steve Coogan than me (in the fact that they've watched a lot more of his stuff, I still think he's really funny), and although parts of it were really standard, it had me laughing quite a bit.
Have you seen Jim Jarmusch's Coffee and Cigarettes? I watched that earlier this year and I thought Coogan and Molina's segment "Cousins?" was the best part.

One of the better sci-fi movies I've seen. Not just for its time, but in general. Sure one could say it's a bit dated, but that's a nothing criticism. It's almost 40 years old, of course it's going to look a little aged. That being said, the story is great and the ending is as well.
FINAL VERDICT: Worth a watch. Especially for the last thirty minutes or so. A really nice message in there.
Mean Streets (1973)

Arguably the most authentic Scorsese film and definitely one of my favorites. Harvey Keitel and Robert De Niro absolutely kill this one. You gotta love a tight, well told story. Never strays from the path, never drags and never finds a way to become a broken record. The ending isn't one I expected either, but loved nonetheless. Might do a full review on this at some point.
FINAL VERDICT: Church for any Scorsese fan but would also work for those maybe not too interested in the crime drama. There's a personal human element here that I think we can all relate to in one way or another.

A Man for All Seasons (1966) 2.5 Nice cast and well made, but not for me.
Alice, Sweet Alice (1976) Repeat viewing Excellent Top 10 slasher for me, creepy and seedy with the right amount of violence.

Ivan's Childhood (1962) 3.5 By far the easiest to watch out of the 5 I've seen from director Andrei Tarkovsky.
El Dorado (1966) 3.5 Entertaining Western with Wayne, Mitchum, and Caan.
Jason X (2001) Average Jason in space, what else needs to be said?
Teorema (1968) 2.5 Decent Italian arthouse from the director of Salo.
Women in Love (1969) 3 Relationship drama set in the 20's, with a slight dark side.
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) Repeat viewing 4 One of the greatest Westerns even though it definitely drags at times for me.
The Seasoning House (2012) 3 Average movie with some bite to it, thanks to some great brutality.
Jeepers Creepers (2001) Repeat viewing Above average Fun horror with a great ending.
The Naked Kiss (1964) 3.5 Memorable, slightly twisted noir.
The Unforgiven (1960) 3.5 Fairly disturbing Wrstern with great performances from Hepburn and Lancaster.
Happy Birthday to Me (1981) Above average I liked everything about this slasher, I just didn't love anything about it.
Time After Time (1979) 3 Good movie with a good story. I just didn't find it memorable.
The Beyond (1981) 3.5 Terrific atmosphere in this Italian horror.
Gate of Flesh (1964) 3 Good Japanese film that I think could've benefited from a more consistent tone.
Take the Money and Run (1969) 2.5 Woody Allen mockumentary that's funny at times, but not much else.
Cool Hand Luke (1967) Repeat viewing 4 I strongly preferred the first half, but this movie has many memorable scenes.
An Autumn Afternoon (1962) 4.5 Rivals Late Spring as my favorite from Ozu so far.
*
Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! (1965) 3I wouldn't call it a good movie, but it's a whole lot of fun.
Godzilla (2014) 3.5 Weak plot of course but I thoroughly enjoyed the action.
Fahrenheit 451 (1966) 2.5 Nice story and visuals, but the execution did not excite me.
Romeo and Juliet (1968) 3 Not my kind of movie at all, but it's very well done and it had enough I liked to keep me in it.
The Gambler (2014) 2 I probably overreacted when I first watched it, but it's still pretty crappy.
Kes (1969) 4 The best I've seen of the British kitchen sink.
Samurai Rebellion (1967) 4.5 Great story and cast featuring Toshiro Mifune.
Seed (2007) 2.5 Extremely dark and brutal, not for the faint of heart.
Naked (1993) 4.5 Funny and miserable at the same time, love it or hate it.
Army of Shadows (1969) 3.5 Very well done political thriller with some tense and exciting scenes.
Inherent Vice (2014) 2-Total disaster for me.
Edward Scissorhands (1990) 4 Glad to have finally seen this very endearing movie.
The Human Condition I: No Greater Love (1959) 4 The first installment of a long ass trilogy was great, but I want more from the next two.
The Night of the Iguana (1964) 3.5 A nice movie for adults with a great cast.

That's a really bad picture of Nicolas Cage. I've seen that movie in stores and the way Cage looks turns me off of the movie more than anything.

Southland Tales
http://media.ifccenter.com/images/films/southland-tales_592x299.jpg
*in this movie everyone is always threatening to kill themselves*
I remember when I was first saw this in 2006 I thought it was amazing. What an idiot kid I was. This movie is a total ********. It starts at Chapter 4 and then gives you 5 and 6. The first 3 chapters are graphic novels. Probably the stupidest choice I've yet to see in a movie, except for the whole movie of The Box (Richard Kelly's follow up to this).
The movie quickly fills up with all sorts of characters and sub-plots, which all end up being completely pointless. There are some highlights and interesting ideas, but Tales just ends up feeling like a music video that got stretched into a movie.

The Exterminating Angel (Bunuel, 1962)- 2.5
I've been pretty conflicted on what to rate The Exterminating Angel, on one side I felt compelled to give it a "positive" rating and bump it up half a star, but then I look at other films I have given this rating and almost all of them are better. The issue I had with this film is it kind of goes in streaks, of scenes I love and scenes I find dispensable. When it began, it felt somewhat choppy- I later understood the purpose of this- but regardless that is the affect it gave, making it hard to get into. Once the story began about the group of bourgeoisie members trapped in tan upscale room, it had many funny lines and ironic scenes. But as the film went along I felt that I was trapped in the same prison the characters were in, and just like everyone in the room wanted to get away from these idiots. By the time the hallucinations began I started enjoying the comedic work again, but there was a long point in the film where I couldn't wait for it to end. While I found the comedy successful the surrealism was clear but not effective. I love surrealistic pieces like Eraserhead or Un Chien Andalou- which Bunuel himself contributed too. But all the ones I love are eerie, dark, and symbolic. The surrealism in The Exterminating Angel, silly and weird but not eerie, dark, or symbolic. Bunuel has two obsession in his films, Christianity and the bourgeoisie. While there are funny moments regarding both categories, I can't distinguish his statement on either. Was the point that the bourgeoisie were becoming the working class, they once couldn't understand? Are they now the ones that are trapped, like their inferiors were once? That's the most I understood, but even their I can't complete the puzzle.

Knife in the Water (Polanski, 1962)
http://www.examiner.com/images/blog/wysiwyg/image/Knife_in_the_Water_2(3).jpg
What a brilliant film. With three isolated characters, Knife in the Water builds a tension that can not be imitated by anyone but the master himself, Polanski. A well established-but obviously flawed- married couple pick up a young hitchhiker, and take him along on their boat for a sailing trip. The divide between classes is immediately evident. The film was made in Poland's communist era, owning a private car is a new concept and by any nations standard the couple is wealthy. There are sly remarks exchanged about age, but what's really being taunted is prosperity. The tension is so thick in the opening scenes you can cut it with a knife ;) . You'd think a love triangle has already been in play that the audience is just unbeknownst too. But despite the tension and the discreet cruelty there's something so beautiful and serene about the sailing trip. Despite the build up suggesting a storm, the calming eastern-European setting was so free that I would have happily joined. Adding to the beauty is the cinematography which is the best I've ever seen. It's minimalist but every shot is beautiful, which is to be expected with Polanski's perfectionist mentality. But not only beautifully shot, the camera work is equally symbolic with its constant showing of exclusion. There's rarely a scene where the three, yes only three, cast members are together. It's usually 2 vs 1.
http://images.popmatters.com/blog_art/k/knifeinthewater.jpg
I also realized in this film how well Polanski incorporates props. For a long time I have considered Persona the best film in that regard, Knife in the Water takes the cake. Whether it's Andrjez watch, the upscale robes, the alarm clock, the pipe, the Crocodile floaty, the instruments of the ship, the hot soup, the liquor. Everything is in place and serves a purpose. Especially the knife, which is just as essential to the film as any of the characters. The film has a theme of materialism, and it seems Polanski's a very materialistic man himself. This can really be seen in his recent feature, Venus in Fur. The economic statement in this film was deemed "too western" for Polish audiences, but I believe the statements on hard work, bravery, and climbing up the ladder is a great one.
http://www.seraphicpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/knife_in_the_water.jpg
Outside of economic themes there are plenty of other ideas, often revolving around eroticism, but another interesting study in this film is that of masculinity. The two male characters constantly one up each other. It begins as man of sea vs man of land and evolves from there to general bravery. The shirts literally come off, and it's implied that this is to impress the center female figure, who is by far the wisest character of the film. But she's rather stoic if not irritated by this, she does not care who the "skipper" is, and often volunteers to be submissive to both of her fellow sailors instead of idly watching the fiasco. The film is very psychological in its questioning of actions- far more complex than Rosemary's Baby. (Which isn't a sly to the classic horror film, but more a compliment to this thriller). The story ends right where it began, with the couple bickering in their car. Despite the destructiveness and deception, what has changed?
Perhaps in the 25 best films I've ever seen
4.5
Glad you liked Sunrise Guap, I guess you are planning on watching the trilogy? Personally I prefer the other two, still they are all good.

Yep - this is where I set my rating for now. Clearly directed well, and overall, a spectacle to behold for most of its run time, I never really connected with any of the characters so ultimately, didn't really care what happened to them. Story was par for the course for these films, with the evil overlord with control over a vital resource. I did like the subtle character progression for Max, who starts out truly hopeless, not even caring about his own identity for most of the film. Hardy underplayed the role in a pretty interesting, if not totally present way. I just can't see this thing as the allegedly instant classic people are making this out to me. There just isn't enough substance.
Just curious. Why do some people keep changing their ratings for movies on MovieForums? I re-watch movies all the time and my ratings stay the same. Maybe it's just me. :indifferent:

I find it normal that the rating, or the appreciation change with us evolving in life since humans are not some static entities, but Learning beings that constantly change.

For me it's part of expanding your taste in film and appreciation for it. When I re-watch films I didn't understand before I notice the true virtue of it hidden inside and gradually become to love it, or sometimes vise-versa.
And it also prevents you from giving Constantine a perfect score. :D

I would say you are the odd one out. :D
No but really, I would say that it's quite normal for you rating or view of a given film to change over time. It can be due to a variation of reasons, like if the movie was too complicated to grasp during the first viewing, or maybe it has been several years since your last watch and your taste and knowledge in film has been expanded.
For me it's mostly one of those two, but there have been other reasons as well, like when I suddenly read an analyzis or even a simple review and found out a hidden message that went totally over my head... But yeah, I find it weird if your ratings doesn't change, I would say it's a very normal thing. But then again, sometimes it may not be the rating that changes, but the rating-system itself. Like if your perception of greatness has changed as your knowledge has been expanded, then maybe your actual "rating" stays the same, but you will have to move it down a little to fit the scale of generality. But I guess it's all different from person to person.

When I watch movies again and again I do notice different things, but my overall view of the movie is basically the same. When I first watch the movie I sit and pay close attention and grasp as much as possible and get my best overview. In that case my own opinion is chosen. My second and third and so on I nitpick on the background and the hidden agendas of the picture. Maybe hidden easter eggs, scenes I may have overlooked or even portions of the movie people have mentioned that deserve more attention. But my main opinion on the picture is overall down pat. Like you stated it's all different from person to person.

Most of my ratings are the same/similar, but I have no problem altering them on the latest viewing. If I didn't have fun watching Jaws on my next viewing I'd have no problem rating it lower. Likewise, if I watch 2001 again and finally love it, I'd reflect that too.

If I re-watch a movie that I watched several years ago my impression of it changes since I became a different person next time I watch it. My appreciation for some things evolved greatly over time as well, for instance, the more I know about a subculture or field, the more a appreciate something made by and for that subculture and understand what's great about it.

In general, because people change with the passage of time and so can their opinions of movies. Once a year I knock all my ratings down by half a star (on a five-star scale) and then go through them again to see which ones should be restored or possibly upgraded. It keeps things interesting.

I thought the big plot twist in No Good Deed was okay, but otherwise the suspense was super cheap and relied too much on cliched soundtrack cues and people always making the worst choice in any given situation. It was still a lot better than Left Behind though.

Jurassic World - Easily the best sequel Jurassic Park ever inspired. It's 20 years after the first Jurassic Park turned into a fiasco, and a new owner has succeeded where John Hammond had failed. Jurassic World is a premium resort destination where families interact with tame dinosaurs and thrill to the more dangerous ones. But declining revenues lead to the creation of a new species that lives only for the kill, and it escapes, leading to the running and screaming we all expect. The film does well in creating both the wonder and terror of it's premise, and Chris Pratt's dinosaur whisperer and Bryce Dallas Howard's uptight executive turned action hero are fun characters to root for. The dinos are the real stars, though, as it should be. Awesome summer fun! 4

Not sure if that's contingent on the fact that the last film on the list is a Madoka Magica movie or just in general, but yeah.

It's no big deal either way but I can't tell if you mean it's rather high because you don't agree with the rating or because you think other people don't agree with it.
If the latter, maybe you're just used to people making a point of giving low ratings to Drew Barrymore movies to rile you up.

The Forbidden Quest (1993) - rating_4 (Do you know the documentary The Great White Silence? No? Go watch it and when you're finished get back to this post and read further... You're still here even though you haven't seen it? Alright, now imagine The Great White Silence taking place in Antarctica instead of Himalaya and with a low-fantasy plot. Right? Now imagine your favourite adventure movie, like Indiana Jones, or whatever that is. You get it? Now imagine there's an old charismatic guy who has lived through these incredible adventures and is ready to tell you all about them. Right? That's The Forbidden Quest. The ending is so powerful it made me cry because of the sheer brilliance of cinema and not the tearjerkerness of the movie.)

It indeed is a simple story, but it's the simplicity that makes it great. It feels like a French Neorealism film and that's pretty much it. Once Upon a Time in the West rating_5 I don't know what it is, but I just adore Sergio Leone movies, I just have fun watching them.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid rating_4 ++ Very good funny western, I enjoyed it very much, It had been more than 3 years I think.
2001 a Space Odyssey rating_3_5 Better then my first watching, but I find this movie to be very inpersonnal, cold. The long shots of space are absolutely masterful, but are not as impressive in 2015 that they were in the late 60's. At least for me.
A Man for All Seasons (1966) Fred Zinnemann rating_4_5 An other great surprise, I didn't know much about sir Thomas More, but I'm now really interested and I will probably read Utopia.
The Face of Another (1966) Hiroshi Teshihagara rating_4_5 A surprise, the best of the trilogy it follows the tradition of existentialism, the masks we wear, etc. I'll rewatch that for sure.
2046 (2004) Wong Kar Wai rating_4 ++ Classic Wong Kar Wai very romantic movie with lots of slow motion, I love his style, but I don't think it's for everyone
The Longest Day (1962) multiple directors rating_4 Great war movie, it influenced a lot of films, particularly Saving Private Ryan I think
The Tale of Princess Kaguya (2014) Isao Takahata rating_4 great film, beauiful animation, simple, but beautiful story
Rocco and His Brothers (1960) Luchino Visconti rating_4 I didn't know Alain Delon was speaking italian, but very touching familly drama.
Time after Time (1979) Nicholas Meyer rating_4 Very good, entertaining time travel movie.
Venus in Fur (2013) Roman Polanski rating_3_5 ++ Great acting, very good movie
Escape from NY (1981) John Carpenter rating_3_5 ++ I don't like Carpenter usually, but that was very good, the atmospere created is very interesting.
Ida (2014) Pawel Pawloski rating_3_5 ++ A very interesting movie, the ending reminded me of The 400 Blows.
The Dirty Dozen (1967) Robert Aldrich rating_3_5 A very entertaining movie, but nothing more
Le Samurai (1967) Jean-Pierre Melville rating_3_5 I had very high expectations, but it kind of desapointed me, i's a good stylish film, typical of Melville, but it's one of his weakest imo.
Mad Max Fury Road (2015) George Miller rating_3_5 It's an excellent action film, but I don't find it to be as good as peopl are saying it is.
Antichrist (2009) Lars Von Trier rating_2_5 Didn't care for that. I saw it as part of ''ciné philo'' an activity at university between students of philosophy when each month or so someone présents a film, this one really was not well received haha.

Plot: Located off the coast of Costa Rica, the Jurassic World luxury resort provides a habitat for an array of genetically engineered dinosaurs, including the vicious and intelligent Indominus rex. When the massive creature escapes, it sets off a chain reaction that causes the other dinos to run amok. Now, it's up to a former military man and animal expert (Chris Pratt) to use his special skills to save two young brothers and the rest of the tourists from an all-out, prehistoric assault.
Directed by: Colin Trevorrow
Studio: Universal Pictures
Screnwriters: Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Derek Connolly, Colin Trevorrow
Starring: Bryce Dallas Howard, Judy Greer, Chris Pratt, Ty Simpkins, Jake Johnson, Nick Robinson, Irrfan Khan, Vincent D'Onofrio, BD Wong, Omar Sy, Katie McGrath, Lauren Lapkus, Andy Buckley
My Review
I planned on seeing an early showing of Jurassic World. but it was sold out. So my theater was very kind to reimburse me for the next available showing. I quickly got a small buttered popcorn and small soda and headed towards the screening area. Going in, customers from the previous screening were raving with excitement about how much they enjoyed the film. So that basically added onto the positivity quotient that I had already entering the theater.
I sat down and not too long after the previews began. I usually look forward to seeing the trailers, but this time nothing truly exciting played beforehand except for previews for Ted 2, Minions and Everest. Then finally......the major attraction began.
From the very first opening sequence, my eyes were glued to the screen. Packed with non-stop thrills, chills, suspense and just the right amount of comic relief, Jurassic World is the the perfect summer movie getaway. As a fan of the original Jurassic Park, this has without a doubt brought back a great amount of cinematic nostalgia. Taken place exactly 22 years later, on the same exact island as the original park, Jurassic World not only resurfaces old settings seen in the original first film but it also genuinely recreates scenes in a cleverly and respectful manner.
There are numerous easter eggs and references to the original Jurassic Park in this movie. So keep your eyes open and look carefully.
http://oi58.tinypic.com/23lxkpy.jpg
22 years ago a movie about a theme park with genetically enhanced dinosaurs come to life was something to be astonished by. A classic film in it's own right. CGI was in its heyday and to see dinosaurs come to life on the big screen was pure eye candy and done in a way nobody has ever seen before. But with over two decades gone by, time has passed and this is now.
Jurassic World has most definitely surpassed Jurassic Park in more ways than one. Expanding the world of dinosaurs, it's environment, the suspense, and most of all the pure adrenaline level and extreme intensity that only this kind of film can deliver. Jurassic World has certainly made its mark in film history. It well deserves all the money it has made so far, and will make in the weeks ahead.
Jurassic World could have simply been a sequel to 1993's Jurassic Park. The setting fits, and the continuity within matches and combines perfectly. The sequels Jurassic Park: The Lost World and Jurassic Park 3 easily can not exist and everything would still make sense.
Chris Pratt was perfectly cast as Owen Grady, and glad to hear he's been signed on for two more sequels. I'm anxious to find out where the story goes from here. Only curiousity from the fandom universe is what we have for now.
By the way, the climatic final scene is just friggin epic!!!
I strongly recommend this movie. And will most definitely purchase the blu-ray on day one.

The Cobbler (2014, Thomas McCarthy) 3_5 - An Adam Sandler film that's actually entertaining and fun to watch. I never knew a movie like that existing these days.

Quiet Riot started at the height of the New Wave craze, and their original contract was such a pathetic joke that it’s legendary, but when they went popular (on MTV yet!), they gave rise to hundreds of similar metal bands, but then the bad times came.

My mum would appreciate this. She adores this film. As a teenager she fell completely in love with it. She even showed me some artwork she did at the time that was inspired by the film; was very good. She loves the music and still has her old vinyl record of the soundtrack. And a couple of years back I found and bought her an original programme from the film for her birthday
Finally after years of hearing about it I watched it with her last year. Kind of hated it! She wasn't best pleased. :D
Those two Goal! films were awful. I remember how much I was looking forward to the first one at the time as well

I rented the movie The Leopard and, at my biggest surprise, the lead is Burt Lancaster (I never noticed before putting the DVD in) and it kind of botters me to hear the dubbed italian of his charatcter. For those who have seen it, would you say that the English version is good or should I stick with the original italian (except Lancaster's annoying dub)?
thanks!

Whatever language you watch The Leopard in somebody is dubbed, because nobody is speaking the same language. In the English version Lancaster is speaking for himself, but nobody else is. I watched the Italian version so I can't say whether the English one is better, I'm afraid. I guess it depends on whether it's Lancaster's voice in particular that you're bothered about.

I love Romeo and Juliet too. My 60's list is currently narrowed down to 32 movies. I don't know yet if it will make my top 25, but it's still in my top 32.

Suffers from "one-battle-too-many" syndome, but was still entertaining enough. Pitt was good, not great.

This is not a well paced film. I kind of don't understand why this is such an iconic movie. I found De Niro's performance in Mean Streets to be 100x better and thought the movie as a whole was too. Taxi Driver, on the other hand, slags and slugs through overly long takes and lifeless performances all around. I have watched this movie several times and simply don't get it. I wish I did.

What we got here is.... Failure to communicate.
This is not a well paced film.
The pacing in the film is perfect. It is a chilling dark and melancholy psychological character study throughout.
I found De Niro's performance in Mean Streets to be 100x better and thought the movie as a whole was too.
De Niro's performance in Taxi Driver is one of his best ever, bar none.

Lifeless? How so? Is it because Travis Bickle is extremely misanthropic and overall depressed, and many others are rude and unaccepting towards him? If you think a movie full of life is one that doesn't have the darker side of it, then that is not a movie which fully harnesses the range of human life and thoughts.
Oh and if you think the movie is full of overly long takes, wait till ya see a Bela Tarr film. ;)
It's not the plot, it's the acting. And again, the pacing. Everything is just so wooden and drab. "But that's the point". I get it, but it's just not executed well IMO. There's no juice. There are no stakes. I'm not inclined to care about Bickle or what he does. :/

Possibly. it's a terrible film.
I can't give Taxi Driver anything less than 4_5 but mostly I just go with 5.
I can't find anything wrong with that film. I have watched the final seconds with the shot in the rear view mirror probably 100 times...one of my favorite sequences in film ever.

I don't think Bewitched is a great movie, but I think it's better than most people rate it. It's at least as good as an average rom-com.
