Oh and Firegod before you get Ronin or Sin City I'd say go for Elektra: Assassin. Miller's cleverest writing imo, but really worth tracking down for the color artwork by Bill Sienkiewicz.

beauty shop --- real funny and just lovely. Nothing special just a nice film to watch. Though Queen Latifah is great at the loveable roles i would like to see her in more serious, more demanding roles i think she could do well. Alicia Silverstone in this movie had me rolling in the aisles when she hit the dance floor and started shaking it like it was going out of fashion.

Single issue storyline. :) The Sin City one-shots have a few shorts in them.

The Life And Death Of Peter Sellers (2004, Stephen Hopkins)

3/5

Hard role for Geoffrey Rush, not in playing Sellers' many on screen characters, but in trying to portray what many people have said was an 'empty vessel', a blank canvas. He copes admirably but the movie itself is sometimes a stylistic mess and trots off down the 'Famous Star Nasty To His Kids And Loves His Mum A Bit Too Much' road far too early.

Nice try.

Who's That Knocking At My Door, Scorsese 1968, great film, reminding me of a lotta things that happened to me in real life,
Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, 2002, well, twas on TV, so i saw it again... preparing for the next chapter,

Mysterious Island ;)
This island is indeed most mysterious. The guys jump in a balloon and sail the skys unti trouble breaks out leaving them "stranded" on a "deserted" island. Some mysterious things happen but they continue living anyways because the captain is serious about living. UH-OH! A giant crab! That's how it comes at you. You should be prepared for more frightening moments after that. They go underwater with lasers too. I don't know why they don't make more story lines like this.

Metropolis :) :(
Some hardcore shots mixed with retarded 80's synth music. Why'd they have to add the music? That's what my sad face is all about, the music. My smiley face is all about the shots. Awesome. I can't forget the set design either. Awesome.

I rented it by accident; the librarian somehow put it in the case for Picnic at Hanging Rock. It was clumsy and sophomoric science fiction at about the level of Mamoru Oshii. Normally I might try and say "it could have been cool if blah blah blah", but I don't even think this one had an interesting idea behind it. I didn't hate it or anything, there's just nothing about it I want to remember.

Dark Passage (1947 - Delmer Daves), starring Bogart & Bacall, utilizes that device for the first section of the film. Then the protagonist, his face shown in a couple mirrors and a newspaper headlines when he is the first-person camera perspective, gets cosmetic surgery, and when the bandages are removed he looks like Bogie for the rest of the film.

Neverending Story --- Yeah! Wahooo! Love this film since i was a wee babby. fantastic story, exciting and amazing. Really good effects considering it came out of the eighties, i was really blown away just by the sheer scale of this movie. And of course i cried like gwnyie at the oscars when Artax the horse gets lost in the swamps of sadness

Dark City (1998 - Alex Proyas)
I had seen this a few years back, but despite it actually being a very good and quite original sci-fi, it seems to have sunk into obscurity over the years since it was released. Brilliantly dark story of a city which is manipulated in every way possible by a group of underground alians called 'The Strangers', who look suspiciously like 'The Gentlemen' from the superb Buffy episode Hush. Its a very good story, that raises some really mind bending philosophical ideas, but in some cases it seems to run a bit too quickly, leaving some plot holes. The acting from Rufus Sewell as gifted amnesiac John is so-so, and Jennifer Connoly as his concerned 'wife' is passable, and there are other good roles from John Hurt as the detective, Kiefer Sutherland as the crazy pyschologist and Richard O'Brian as the superbly creepy Mr Hand. However, the cinematogrpahy and set design is absoloulty astounding. This movie must have cost a bomb, as Proyas delivers a truly magificent city in which we see the strange story unravel. Buildings grow out of the ground like sprouting seeds, whilst a million strangers chatter beneath the city in front of a giant glowing clock. The movie just looks fantastic, the perpetually dark city existing in some twisted 1930's America, looks just like one of those drawings where there is a thousand staircases all leading to nowwhere. Worth seeing just for the way it looks.

Hitchikers guide to the Galaxy (2005- Garth Jennings)
Some fun stuff here. I had never read the books so i didn't really know what to expect, although i had heard things about it and did expect the humour and quirky theories on our place in the universe. Wasn't a massive fan of Freeman as Aurthur, he just annoyed me more than charmed me. Not sure what i thought about Zooey Deschanel either, although her charcter did seem as bizarre as her real name. Loved Mos Def as Ford Prefect, he really suprised me, and Rockwell was good once again. I loved the song at the beginning, and Stephen Fry presented the Guide wonderfully, i want one of them. I loved the spaceship with its probabitily drive as well, such a shame Douglas Adams didnt actualy get to see this finished product when he had been trying to get it going for such a long time. Although i think i saw his face at the end as the final object the spaceship turns into, so thats pretty sweet i guess.

Meet the Parents (2000- Jay Roach)
Good fun, great mix of comedy and romance. Seen this lots of times before, still makes me cringe when Stiller cracks his jokes at that awful family, and when he wears the lovely fetching speedos. Deniro scares me a bit as Jack, makes me think thats what his like in real life. Good film, shame about the horrific sequel.

Monster (2003 - Patty Jenkins)
 Oh my, saw this for the first time and it blew me away. Theron deserves her Oscar for role as Aileen, i saw the documentary before i saw this and Theron acually becomes Aileen, its terrifying. Such a sad sad film, i realise that this is an entirely sympathetic view of Aileen Wuornos and her murders, but i still found it so horrible to watch, how desperate she became and how there was no place in society for her to get help, or begin to try and lead a normal life. I wonder if it was all for love as the film suggests...

Truly horrible film, but brilliantly done.

I will admit, it started off quite interesting, but I think that faded off in about minute four. In the opening scene, we see God commiting suicide for about 8 minutes, now, does this have any purpose? No, not really, maybe just to disgust the viewer. But at least that scene was interesting compared to the rest of the film, which was just totally dull and very, very un-interesting. I couldn't wait till the film was over, and when it finally was, I was relieved. Nice camera work and some beautiful photography by Merhige, but that doesn't make up for this long, (yes, it felt long, even with the 71-minute run time) and quite disgusting piece of work.

I would give it another chance, but I wouldn't want to feel what torture is like again.

The Bridges of Madison County (1995 - Clint Eastwood)
I'd been wondering about this film for a while, as i had only heard good things, but was slightly apprehensive becuase of what i had seen seemed a bit too soppy...which is exactly what it was. However, i still found myself incredibly moved by several moments in the film. Its just a simple story of the quiet, unnapreciated housewife who gets given four days of freedom from her family whilst they go on a trip, and during that time she meets a new face, Robert Kincaid who is so different from the man she has been married to for an eternity. They get close and very quickly fall in love. As the film chronicles in great detail their time together over the four days, a lot of it is just sitting around and talking, which in places was very slow and boring. But by the end of the film, because you have endured their intenseness and if you are still awake, you really care for them. The scene with both Francesa and Robert in their seperate cars is absoloulty heart breaking. Streep is superb once again playing the Italian housewife who has come a long way to end up in nowhere, and Eastwood is suprisingly sentimnetal as Robert.

Beautiful but sedated.

But dude, your avatar!!! I would guess that a lot of the people who didn't like it cannot appreciate anything that gets any more than just a tiny bit wierd. Personally I thought it was a lot of fun, which seems like the full intent of the filmmakers. At least give it a try. You don't trust other people's opinions more than your own do you?

I think your being generous to even call it dialogue. My buddy was an extra for that film for 3 months and got paid around 22 bucks an hour with excellent food for everyone on the table at all times of the day. I really wish Tarantino had made [more of] Sin City. I liked that movie, but the completely cgi backgrounds looked super fake.

Look, way over your head there: it's the point! The movie SIN CITY was painstakingly faithful to the graphic novel source material, which employed stylized backgrounds rather than realistic ones.

Geesh.

Pulp Fiction (millionth time)....I love this movie, as do all sane folks, I'm sure. Watching it made me realize that nobody makes movies this good anymore. Also, it shows you can make a damn fine movie without any CGI, which has been lost somewhere down the line. I really wish Tarantino had made Sin City. I liked that movie, but the completely cgi backgrounds looked super fake. Same with all the CGI in the new Star Wars films. whatever happened to building sets? Ahhh, I could rant all day on this, but I won't.
????

Are you serious? Building real sets for Sin City would have been lame, and totally not Sin City. This is some of the best production design in the last 15 years, and it was perfect. Pick up a couple of Sin City trades before passing judement on this film, as it seems you weren't up to speed on what Sin City was. I just don't see how they could have done a better job with this film, it's perfect, IMO.

Actually, I have all the Sin City books. Big Frank Miller fan. Even have all his Daredevil and Batman work, and Ronin.

I just think that building real sets would have added a LOT to the film, like a sense that you aren't just watching actors playing in front of a green screen. They could have easily desaturated them via computer and gotten the same effect. The more I think about it, the less I honestly liked Sin City. I think that the parts with Marv were brilliant, and I liked Clive Owen, but I also think that the FASTER FASTER FASTER ethic of modern cinema kind of ruins the film in spots, they seem to be rushing EVERYTHING. A lot of the performances are lifeless because they are just reading the dialogue and hitting key poses from the books, and never really inhabiting the characters (Mickey Rourke excluded, of course), and I just really really hope that CGI backdrops aren't the way of the future, cause some of them work fine, but others just don't convince me.

But heaven forbid I have my own opinion. Then everyone thinks I am stupid or "just don't get it," cause we are all still in high school, apparently.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but wasn't this movie based on true events? So the ideoolgy behind it all would have mostly been fact with actual events that had taken place.

Who said you couldn't have your own opinion? Also, that was just my opinion, which I am allowed to have as well, no? I am not coming down on your opinion, but I am questioning it, which is what I thought these boards were for. Me disagreeing with you isn't me saying you shouldn't have an opinion. I also couldn't disagree more about the fast, faster thing. This film wasn't guilty of that (I must agree a large majority of the films coming out today are, though), and I have heard some complain about the slow pacing. I must see it again, but I thought it was fairly restrained as far as the editing was concerned and felt they gave you enough time to let the comic-frames-come-to-life sink in.

Again, I must watch it again, but I seem to recall both the editing and the pacing were spot on. What aspects of the film inclined you towards the faster, faster comments?

As you probably have heard, Tarantino directed one scene in Sin City In which Dwight and Jackie Boy are in the car together. Tarantino had wanted to bring in a real car but Rodriguez and Miller insisted on CGI which does make sense since the rest of the movie was in CGI. Quentin was reluctant but than according to Rodriguez he was somewhat converted afterwards. Though I'm not a hundred percent sure that is exactly how it went knowing Tarantino's personality. In any event I agree that CGI is overused on many occaisions. If you get a chance listen to the commentaries for the original Star Wars trilogy and you would be amazed at how much effort and creativity went into transferring everything from Lucas' mind to the screen. It was an amazing and fascinating feat that now would simply be done on a computer. Although Lucas' has said that he ran out of exotic locations that look like another planet and would not have made more Star Wars movies if t wasn't for CGI, wether you think that is a good or bad thing is up to you ;).

Alright, i just finished watching "El Mariachi" and wonder why this film apparently won that year in the sundance film festival. Was it because of the low budget? Please is there anyone who can give some positive imput and explain why this movie got two thumbs up from siskel and ebert back in the day. The Birds (1963- Alfred Hitchcock)
It all started with the love birds...
This is about my third viewing of this film, and i enjoyed it this time more than ever. Every single shot is amazing, drawing you in, really making you take notice of what Hitch is showing you. After my past viewings of the film, i'll be honest and admit i never really payed much attention to the actual story between Mitch and Melanie, ive been too distracted by the way the movie looks and obviously the birds. But this time i payed particular attention to the story...and what an odd story it is. I never noticed what a bizarre character Tippi Hedren's, Melanie is. Her desire for Mitch seriously borders on stalking, but its still quite sweet. Mitch seems to be some kind of alpha male that the women of Bodega Bay seem to revolve around and fight for, rather like they are all birds themselves. We see Mitch's odd relationship with Melanie, his oedipal relationship with his mother and the strange lingering relationship with school teacher Annie (who has serious lesbian lusts over Melanie if you ask me). In all my past viewings i never realised it was an apocalyptic tale about the end of the world brought on by birds. I just thoguht they were crazy birds attackin the town and then they just stop at the end. But no, the bird womans speech highlights how much trouble they are all in whilst they shelter in the cafe. And later after the huge attack on the town, we find the townspeople locking themsleves in their homes, boarding the windows, making their own cages for them selves to live in, with the love birds safely watching them from within.
This whole apocalyptic feeling made it much more creepier, especially with the image of the burning town and the slow invasion of the birds hovering in to attack. The mere fact that Hitch can make flappy sqwauky sea gulls, and the incessant tweetin of sparrows a terrifying threat is brilliance in itself. Great stuff.

What astounds me is how you can't seem to seperate how "you" would prefer the cameras and angles be used in this movie to suit your own personal feelings to the war in general. The movie wasn't about explaining away the politics of the situation. The film was about a very real situation where these men found themsleves in an extremely dangerous situation surrounded by their enemies. Kill or be killed. It was from their point of view being in the center of a combat zone and would seem rather silly if the director wanted to give a face to the enemy as you quite adamently suggested. Sorry, but in war i think if you ask these guys who actually went through this ordeal, your not gonna see them tell you they sympathized with the enemy when the bullets were being fired over their heads and their buddies where being killed around them.

What annoys me the most is how you jumped at my question with your rather high and mighty attitude and judging my movie experiences. I used to think you were cool but i guess you just showed your true colors. From now on you'll be just a jackass to me until you prove otherwise.

Classic nostalgia family movie mush. John Lithgow is wonderfully kind as the father of the family that come across a big smelly big foot. I love the part when his father asks him to paint a picture of the escaped big foot so hunters know what to shoot and the Lithgow draws a lovely kind picture. So sweet. The Amityville Horror (2005- Andrew Douglas)
I seem to remember enjoying the original film and its pretty hard to forget the bleeding walls and the pig monster outside the window in the first one as those images creeped me out for years, so last night i gave in and saw this one. I dont normally bother with cheesy horror films like this, and i despise unecessary remakes like this one, but sisboombah ahd told me it was really scary, and i was bored, so i gave in. Nothing special here just as i expected. Same story to the original, although i dont remember the whole hidden church, torture chamber thing they had going on in this one. Ryan Reynolds preformace is pretty laughable, going form the sweet caring husband whenever he is away form the house saying things like "i love you so much!" and then as soon as he steps in the door, its all "What wrong? you FREAK! YOU STUPID FREAK". The scares come thick and fast with lots of crashing and banging from the awful score, even adding a big crash on the symbols when someone opens a door, or puts the kettle on. Its like BOOM! dropped a cup. BOOM! opened a door. BOOM! chopped some wood. So its pretty easy to find ya self jumpin whilst watching this. the story didnt make sense and the endin was such an anitclimax, i'd only reccomend this if you fancy heart failure from jumping around so much. Fun but not much else.

Invaders from Mars (1986- Tobe Hooper)
Good old nostalgia film for me here. Classic sci-fi tale of boy sees alien spaceship land in his garden, people start acting wierd with strange little cuts on the back of their necks, aliens under ground, boy must save the world. Good fun but mega cheesy 80's stuff here. The little boys over acting and comedy running whilst tyring to escape from the very slow blobby looking aliens is brilliant, whilst Louise Fletcher (Nurse Ratched from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest) is wonderfully horrid as the school teacher turned martian trying to capture young David Gardener. With sets and monster designs by Stan Winston, the film looks very good. The space ship is really quite creepy, along with the strange moany martian baddy who looks a lot like Crang from The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon series. Also the effects of the sandpit are quite good as the martians victims get sucked under the sand. Good fun, good effects but nothing more.

American Graffiti, 1973, i really really like it, and i can still fall in love with Mackenzie Phillips (will i go to jail?? - well, now i wouldn't)

The Big Street --- im not one for old black and whites but i sat down to watch tis fantastic story, loved it all. Hopeful singer meets caring gentle soul, when shes injured he stands by her whilst taking mounds of abuse from her but strives to make one of her fantasies come true. Beautiful.

White Noise (2005, Geoffrey Sax)

2.5/5

Efficient enough chiller with Michael Keaton, plus annoying lisp of course - theyanthe?. Unintentional hilarity from wideboy thesp Ian McNeice who intones "I'm not a medium" without a hint of irony. ;)

The Jerk The kind of shamelessly dopey 70s comedy that I really love and Steve Martin is a master of it. Just listen to his comedy album: Let's Get Small and see what I mean. 3/5

I Heart Huckabees (2004, David O Russell)

3.5/5

Once I'd got over the shock that this movie wasn't about Norwich City's be-mulleted winger Darren Huckerby it was quite good.

Anatomie de l'Enfer (Anatomy of Hell), 2003, well well well... , not only is that (cheap) porn (meaning you have to be 16 to see it in a tolerant country like France  ) (plus sometimes quite disgusting  ) that kills all eroticism the movie could have had, but it's full of exasperating ready-made blahblah talks repeating commonplace opinions about (exploited) women and (exploitative) men, how good women know men and how little men know women etc etc etc... :bored: :bored: :bored: vodka helped me watching it till the end (mostly forwarding though...). and why? just wanted to give Breillat another chance, like i do for all directors...
